Kalikapurane Murtivinirdesah
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8120811240; Hardcover; New; New;
Most of the Pura?as contain sections devoted to the arts. In some they provide context while in others, they are akin to the texts of form and technique, specially silpa, citra, na?ya and n?tya. A free narrative style of the Pura?as facilitates an understanding of the silpa (i.e. measurement, proportion and iconography) and the Agama aspect (i.e. ritual and the worship methodologies) together. Also, since the Pura?as are texts which move freely in time and space, social strata, they are able to make connections between different levels of society as also in different periods of history. The present volume Kalikapura?e Murtivinirdesa?, is a selection of 550 verses from the Kalika Pura?a roughly ascribed to the period between tenth and eleventh centuries CE. It is an important landmark for understanding the iconography as also the ritual practices related to Saiva images particularly the Devi in eastern India. The sculptured style of medieval eastern India is distinctive and cannot be mistaken for contemporary sculptural style prevalent in Bengal and Orissa. What is true of the sculptural style is also true of the iconographical details of images from Assam and specially some only recently excavated and housed in the Assam State Museum. For understanding the iconography of these images, the Kalika Pura?a is an indispensable tool. The detailed descriptions enable one to comprehend the particularities of the iconographical details. The Pura?a is specially concerned with Kamakhya, Kali and Kapali-Bhairavi. The fusion of the legend and the iconographical details can, no doubt, help in further interpretative work on eastern India sculpture. Equally significant are the sections relating to the methodogies of worship through rituals. Very fine and sensitive details are enumerated as to how to meditate upon and worship the Goddess specially Kamesvari (Kamakhya). 101599

Of the People: Essays on Indian Popular Culture
Chronicle Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8180280276; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Why is all of India so obsessed with cricket and what are the reasons for the fall of hockey from its Olympian height and the decline of football? What explains the continuing convention of singing and dancing in Hindi films? Why has everything desi suddenly become fashionable and hip? This collection of essays is based on the premise that such questions about Indian popular culture need to be examined if we are to make sense of the twenty-first century India. Following the growth of cable television, the rise of new technologies and the emergence of a culture of consumption; the products of contemporary culture have come to play an increasingly important role in shaping some Indian social practices. The book argues that the incredible draw of cricket can be understood in terms of a postcolonial anxiety about “catching up” with the West; the ubiquitous song-dance in Bollywood film must be seen not as escapist fare but rather as a device that enables the articulation of modernity; the quest for identity on part of the Indian diaspora has contributed to the rise of a global desi culture. What these and other instances demonstrate is that, far from being mindless diversion, popular culture serves as both a crucible and an agent for the formation of national consciousness and social identity. As the popular goes, so goes the nation. Printed Pages: 252. 031556

Channeling Cultures: Television Studies from India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 0198092059; Hardcover; New; New;
Television plays a very important role in constructing and presenting images of Indian modernity. Channeling Cultures brings together scholars from various disciplines to locate television within multiple histories of the nation as well as current trajectories in global culture and politics. Building on analytical frameworks of postcoloniality, citizenship, democracy, development, globalization and consumerism, this volume addresses questions in televisual form, genre, identity, politics, affect, gender, body and sexuality, and explores regional, national, and global itineraries of Indian television. Focusing on the genres of news, reality show, and soap opera, the book interrogates some of the standard assumptions of television studies and more broadly global media studies. It provides fresh perspectives on the transition of Indian television from a state monopoly to a market-driven system and liberalization`s nuanced relationships with Indian media in general. The arguments invite the reader to critically engage with many theoretical perspectives ranging from political economy to cultural studies that energize the field of research on Indian television. The book will interest all those looking to critically engage with television, media theory, and popular culture. Printed Pages: 344. 110227

Tribal Myths and Legends of Orissa (The Story of Origins)
Pratibha Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2005; 8177021001; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The myths and legends presented here are all new field collections. The purpose of the book is twofold. First it will try to correct the popular urban belief or the belief of the educated elitist belief to be exact that our tribal people are ignorant uneducated and uncultured and that the little culture etc. they have is the gift of the mainstream civilization. And second it will attempt to bring out the richness of tribal culture carried in their myths and legends and to establish its antiquity in the context of the prime civilizations of the world the Mesopotamian the Babylonian the Hindu the Egyptian the Greek and the Judeo Christian. The book introduces a competitive reading to evaluate degrees of being civilized if such things are possible. Finally it examines myths as a fossil field which is layered and in which ancient facts are trapped and held as fossils. The book suggests ways of identifying recovering and studying these fossils in order to construct the tribe's prehistory and ethos. Printed Pages: 316. 101355

Beyond the Robe tells the story of the Science for Monks program and what it reveals about the larger role Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns can play in their monasteries, in their communities, and in the world at large. Karma and the Rebirth of Consciousness
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8121511003; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is the first volume of a series entitled Unveiling the Esoteric in Buddhism that aims to reform many aspects of Buddhist heuristics and gnoseology. In this volume the nature of the karma that governs all phenomenal appearances in the three worlds of the samsara is examined. From the basic premises the thesis proceeds logically to expound the intricacies of the mode of manifestation of all aspects of this basic law. Many traditional beliefs are simplified "truth" that had their genesis in the infancy of humanity's ability to logically enquire. The Buddha utilised a similar primitive belief system concerning karma without any alteration. The simplified elementary beliefs are all that have been perpetuated, and Buddhist have never really queried inherently flawed logic, such as the belief of transmigration of human consciousness into the animal Kingdom after death. They have asserted a near adamantine faith in the writings of those that have simply reiterated the exoteric teachings. The text presents a series of syllogisms rectifying the flaws, bringing to light part of the Buddha's own agenda for the education of humanity. Printed Pages: 308. 014449

Servant Master Mistress
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8186939237; First Edition; Paperback; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
The Sanjanas had planned to enjoy the tiger cub and surrender the adult to the zoo, but no plan had been made for the adolescent. The family is breakfasting in the compound of their bungalow when the cub gets its first taste of blood from a cut on Sohrab Sanjana’s hand. Also in attendance are Daisy (Sohrab’s English wife, married when she was stranded by World War II in India); Rustom (Sohrab’s brother, infatuated by Daisy, challenging his brother for her affection); Dolly (their mother, afraid the rivalry between her sons may erupt into violence echoing the rivalry between two brothers whom she had married in succession); and Savak (Dolly’s husband, still paying the price for his own infatuation thirty years earlier). Their story spans the years from 1910 to 1945, encompassing scenes in which a yogi’s ‘spirituality’ is exposed by a monkey, a ten-year-old English girl seduces an eight-year-old Indian boy, and a young Englishwoman meets her first lover at the Silver Jubilee of George V. A family secret lies at the heart of the story, but the periphery is no less thrilling: two lovers escape from Stalin’s Soviet Union to India and a soldier meets with tragedy during the Kut-al-amara campaign of the Great War in Mesopotamia. A Woman Madly in Love
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8174363076; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi
Farida Cooper is too shocked by her husband's treachery even to talk about it, but in hiding her shame succeeds only in denying the damage to herself and making casualties of others, among them an infatuated seventeen-year-old boy. Farida is vivacious, voluptuous, intelligent, and rich, not to mention spoiled, selfish, and talented (she paints, writes novels, plays the piano), but her life is hardly as rosy as the appearance suggests. Her father, too wealthy to care what others think, makes a hobby of chasing women. Her mother grows rigid and unloving in consequence. Farida's saving grace is her Kaki with whom she lives after her sixth birthday, but this also heightens the sense of her parents' indifference, and she learns to show nothing of her feelings. Instead, her feelings erupt later in a series of disastrous choices. Her story shuttles between Bombay and Chicago, spanning the years from World War II to the Eighties, illuminating along the way themes of love and marriage, feminism and friendship, art and academia. Khyal: Creativity within North India’s Classical Music Tradition
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121507650; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
This book is a study of khyal, the genre of North Indian classical music which has dominated in performances by highly trained vocalists for at least the past 150 years. It is also a study of cultural history. Spanning as it does a good portion of the periods of the British raj in India, the struggle for independence, and the flourishing of India as a republic, the history of khyal and of khyal singers is a story of generous patronage by native princes, of the loss of this patronage when courts were dissolved, and of the resilience of musicians in adjusting to the vicissitudes of contemporary artistic life. In performing khyal, the singer presents a brief composition, and then improvises from twenty to forty minutes according to certain guidelines. One chapter of this book describes the compositions, the modal and metric materials, and the improvisational guidelines utilized by the khyal singers. Descriptions are illustrated with musical examples in transcription (in Western notation and also in a modified Indian notation) and on accompanying CDs. Because khyal was developed by musicians employed at courts scattered throughout North India, the manner of performing it varies among different groups of musicians (gharanas). Bonnie Wade considers six major group traditions—Gwalior, Agra, Sahaswan/Rampur, Alladiya Khan, Kirana, and Patiala—tracing the personal histories of singers (both members of lineages and other disciples), presenting the statements made in Indian sources about their musical styles, and considering those statements through analysis of recorded performances by leading musicians of recent decades. Since individual artistic achievement is so important among musicians in the Hindustani tradition, and in the development and performance of khyal, this perspective is also considered. The book contains an extensive bibliography and discography, as well as illustrations of khyal in performance, genealogical charts, and maps. It also has 2 Audio CDs. The Illustrated History of Indian Cricket
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174364498; Hardcover; New; New;
Cricket has been the binding spirit for a fractious India; it has been opium and adrenalin, valium and vitamin. It has been a vehicle for social mobility and has helped promote tolerance and secularism. The story of Indian cricket is the story of a society, a tapestry woven as a permanent work in progress by a nation in search of a definition. This special updated edition of The Illustrated History of Indian Cricket is an attempt to tell that story, through pictures, many of which have not been seen in public before. The story of the highs and lows of Indian cricket, with all its oddities and eccentricities - how we reinvented a game and found ourselves reflected in it. A mine of information for sports buffs, connoisseurs and academicians alike, the book is a frame-by-frame unfolding of an institution whose history is a fascinating tale of passion, drama, intrigue, scandal, agony and excitement spread over a century. All the brightest stars of Indian cricket can be found here, from Ranji and C K Nayudu to Vijay Merchant and Sunil Gavaskar; and from Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar to Saurav Ganguly and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Every major milestone along the journey is covered, from reducing England to 19-3 in India's very first Test at Lords in 1932, to the famous victories against West Indies and England in 1971; and from winning the 1983 World Cup to repeating the performance at the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007. It describes how innovations like the IPL have contributed to the game's popularity and financial fortunes, and ends with the prophecy that come March 2010 when the IPL returns to India, the global constituency cultivated in 2009 will help make the tournament a truly global Indian export - India's only truly international sporting brand. Sport in South Asian Society: Past and Present
Routledge; London, UK; 0415359538; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This book explores the role of sport within the context of South Asian Society. Academics have largely overlooked this fascinating discussion and this collection of essays seeks to remedy this oversight. It reveals that sport can not only be used in many instances as a barometer of the political dynamics of society and a reflection of South Asian culture, it has also influenced these structures.For example, in many instances traditional notions of class divides and gender roles are challenged and subverted in sport, making its role and contribution to the fabric of South Asian society extremely valuable. Furthermore, this book should provide the scope to draw together historians and other scholars to examine methodological issues as well as particular case studies and narratives examining different comprehensions of 'sport'. This book is a special issue of the journal 'the International Journal of the History of Sport'. The Role of Divine Grace in the Soteriology of Samkaracarya
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 2000; 9004120440; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; 16.5 x 25 Cm
This volume examines the role of divine grace in the non-dualist soteriology of Sam?kara. The author argues that grace is an essential but generally overlooked feature in Sam?kara’s enlightenment spirituality. Introductory chapters summarize recent developments in Sam?kara research, Sam?kara’s epistemology and ontology, ancient Vedantic teachings on grace, and modern scholarly disagreement about grace in Sam?kara’s Advaita system. The heart of the book consists of two lengthy exegetical chapters examining Sam?kara’s key passages on grace from his dozen genuine works. The final chapter presents for the first time a systematic summary of Sam?kara’s understanding of the operation and necessity of divine grace. This book provides a useful summary of Sam?kara’s system as a whole besides offering a radical revision of the standard understanding of Sam?kara’s soteriology. It also reveals that Sam?kara was much more indebted in his thinking to his Vedantic predecessors than had hitherto been thought. Printed Pages: 454. 012655

The Holy CEO: An Autobiography
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8184951981; Softcover; New;
Christian Fabre’s life was nothing less than a roller-coaster ride. He was far away from home, he had a broken marriage, was penniless, and without a job.The evolution of Swami Pranavananda Brahmendra Avadhuta from the down-on-his-luck French entrepreneur who had witnessed several ups and downs in his business, is an inspiring story. Ironically, the very name that he renounced has become famous all over India today, as more and more Christian Fabre stores open up in numerous cities.After his ordainment as a Naga Swami (a renunciate naked Hindu monk), his beloved Guru gave him an astounding directive – his career in fashionable garments had to be his sadhana (spiritual practice). He had to be in the marketplace, but not of it; he had to bring Spirituality into the material world. Successfully straddling the seemingly opposing worlds of Spirituality and international fashion wear, the Press calls him the ‘Anti-Trump’ or the ‘Naked Emperor of Ready-to-Wear’.This is his story, in his words.Printed Pages: 256. 105531

Interesting narration of crimes which are being committed by the privileged, the high and mighty section of the Society in India and some other Countries are analysed by the authors. The fall-outs of corporate-sector crimes-killing, injuring, maiming and robbing the public at Large by pretty sophisticated methods are laid open. It also discusses various scams with details and prominent of them viz. BCCI scam is discussed at length to show how Pakistani officials and CIA had tried to ball BCCI out. Criminals and crimes in the Fields of education, bureaucracy, media, godmen and, above all, Politics are put to extensive scrutiny.With the Rise of modern Industrial capitalism, the World has come to witness a new type of crimes which have been variously known as white-collar crimes, the crimes of the rich and powerful and so on. While in the USA, Britain, France and elsewhere, there are lot of Research works done and published on their various facets. There has been no substantial and worthwhile research in India. Even no thought-provoking Novel has come to be written, not to speak of treating the subject in the Fashion of Dickens and Balzac. Without understanding the phenomenon, no amount of clarion-calls whether given from the ramparts of the Red Fort or the Parliament House can make even a small dent in the problem. The present Study tries to fill-up this gap. It looks into the genesis of white-collar crimes and criminality of which corruption in various spheres of life is an important aspect and the link with modern Capitalism in General and India in particular. It poses and answers why the white-collar crimes have proliferated and assumed menacing proportions in recent years and what will happen if no urgent steps are taken. And these steps have to be more than mere moral platitudes. The study consists of 12 comprehensive chapters which deal with the phenomenon and its various aspects and its proliferation in the Corporate sector, the media, religion, education, Bureaucracy and politics. It devotes a chapter to the growth of mafia and its origin, various characteristics and the mode of operation. It has analysed the deadly nexus among business, bureaucracy, politics and mafia in the light of the scams which have surfaced in India during recent years. The study is a scholarly endeavour written in a very readable style, which may be helpful to researchers, politicians, journalists and general readers.Printed Pages: 426. 105898

Time and Temporality in Samkhya-Yoga and Abhidharma Buddhism
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1983; 8121501504; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
Time and Temporality in Samkhya-Yoga and Abhidharma Buddhism is a masterly treatment of the philosophical issues that have incessantly exercised the mind of scholars, both eastern and western, modern and ancient. The author shows remarkable ingenuity in his treatment of the themes under investigation and offers incisive insights into the questions of time and temporality. Reification of time, Dr. Braj Mohan Sinha maintains, is a metaphysical pre-supposition that hinders a proper understanding of the phenomenon of temporality. Temporality, he suggests, need not be conceived as an adjectival synonym of time. Rather, temporality must be understood in the context of the world involved consciousness which is continually on the go and, as the structure of becoming and phenomenal change, is essentially temporal. Temporality, implies both the fact of change and the finitude of the phenomenal existence as well as the corresponding subjective experience. The book raises fundamental questions, regarding assumptions of scholars who regard Samkhya-yoga and Abhidharma Buddhism as representing two diametrically opposed philosophical positions. While recognising a certain difference in the basic orientation of the two religious philosophies, the author successfully argues for significant congruence in their ontological and soteriological perspectives. Both the systems appear in close company specially in their articulation of the problem of temporality and its transcendence which can only be typified as a soteriology of the present. The author effectively brings out the philosophico-religious significance of this soteriology of 'present' and its non-eschatological nuances in contradistinction to the eschatological soteriologies of some other religious traditions.
