Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121204313; Hardcover; New; New;
A basic book for all those interested in the material life of the Country and the countrymen. It focuses attention on the whole gamut of our economic problems and suggests solutions.Economic Reforms Demand a variety of changes, innovations and Organization adequate emphasis should be given to the infra-structure areas imports, steel, Metal and power generation. On them defend the Industrial growth and Employment potential. In the fiscal year about to end, which has, according to the media, ushered in a glorious era of economic rejuvenation, both Agricultural and industrial production have lagged behind the previous year's output, unemployment has increased by few millions and Inflation has reached unprecedented heights. The growth in the sector of power generation has been much lower compared even to that of other developing Countries in the world. In the absence of adequate power supply, not more than 40 per cent of the installed capacity of our industry could be used. Consider the fact that we are hardly near 200 kwtt per capita as compared to more than 1,000 kwtt per capita for even some of the developing countries and about 7,000 kwtt in the developed world. The book discusses the whole gamut of our economic problems and suggests Means to overcome them. Understanding Early Civilizations: A Comparative Study
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2003; 0521822459; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New; 18.5 Cms x 25 Cms
As the first class-based societies in human history, early civilizations are of great importance to social scientists interested in the development of human complexity. This book offers the first detailed comparative study of the seven most fully documented early civilizations: ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, Shang China, the Aztecs and their neighbors, the Classic Maya, the Inka, and the Yoruba. Unlike previous studies, equal attention is paid to similarities and differences in their sociopolitical organization, their economic systems, and their religious beliefs, knowledge, art, and values. Many of this study’s findings are surprising and provocative. They challenge not only current understandings of early civilizations but also the theoretical foundations of modern archaeology and anthropology. Rival cultural and ecological approaches are demonstrated to be complementary to one another, while a comprehensive understanding of human behavior is shown to require that more attention be paid to the neurosciences. Contents Introduction: 1. Rationalism and relativism; 2. Comparative studies; 3. Defining ‘early civilization’; 4. Evidence and interpretation; Sociopolitical Organization: 5. Kingship; 6. States: city and territorial; 7. Urbanism; 8. Class systems and social mobility; 9. Family organization and gender roles; 10. Administration; 11. Law; 12. Military organization; 13. Sociopolitical constants and variables; Economy: 14. Food production; 15. Land ownership; 16. Trade and craft specialization; 17. Appropriation of wealth; 18. Economic constants and variables; Cognitive and Symbolic Aspects: 19. Conceptions of the supernatural; 20. Cosmology and cosmogony; 21. Cult; 22. Phonetically Based Phonology
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521825784; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
Phonetically based phonology is centered around the hypothesis that phonologies of languages are determined by phonetic principles; that is, phonetic patterns involving ease of articulation and perception are expressed linguistically as grammatical constraints. This book brings together a team of scholars to provide a wide-ranging study of phonetically-based phonology. It investigates the role of phonetics in many phonological phenomena - such as assimilation, vowel reduction, vowel harmony, syllable weight, contour line distribution, metathesis, lenition, sonority sequencing, and the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) - exploring in particular the phonetic bases of phonological markedness in these key areas. The analyses also illustrate several analytical strategies whereby phonological sound patterns can be related to their phonological underpinnings. Each chapter includes a tutorial discussion of the phonetics on which the phonological discussion is based. Diverse and comprehensive in its coverage, Phonetically-based Phonology will be welcomed by all linguists interested in the relationship between phonetics and phonological theory. • Applies the approach of phonetically-based phonology to a broad range of phonological phenomena • Includes a long introduction which places the material in the context of the general theoretical issues faced by researchers in this area • Each chapter includes a special background section covering the phonetics that is needed in order to understand the related phonology Contents 1. Introduction: the phonetic basis of phonological markedness Bruce Hayes and Donca Steriade; 2. Perceptual cue robustness and phonotactic constraints: rethinking sonority Richard Wright; 3. A perception-based analysis of place assimilation Jongho Jun; 4. Rounding harmony Abigail Kaun; 5. The evolution of metathesis Juliette Blevins and Andrew Garrett; 6. The role of contrast-specific and language-specific phonetics in contour tone Jie Zhang; 7. Vowel reduction Katherine M. Crosswhite; 8. Contrast and perceptual distinctiveness Edward Flemming; 9. Syllable weight Matthew Gordon; 10. Consonant lenition Robert Kirchner; 11. Language processing and segmental OCP effects Stefan Frisch. A Beginner's Guide to Tibetan Buddhism: Notes from a Practitioner's Journey
Snow Lion Publications; Boston, USA; 2004; 1559392118; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
As Tibetan Buddhism extends its reach in the West, many practitioners are making strong commitments to this path. The Vajrayana tradition still being new to our culture, however, there remain significant gaps in Western students' education and understanding. These can lead to practical difficulties for new or intermediate students. This book begins with the very awakening of students' interest in spirituality and their initial encounter with Tibetan Buddhism, and then leads them through the steps necessary for successful practice in the West. A Beginner's Guide to Tibetan Buddhism speaks powerfully and directly to the Western student who is working to integrate this incredibly vast tradition into the realities of daily life. Drawing on his many years of practice and teaching, the author skillfully addresses obstacles, doubts and confusions that every reader will recognize. "Bruce Newman has been my close student for almost thirty years. I am confident that he will be able to share his insights with others and help them on the Buddhist Path."— Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, Tibetan Buddhist teacher and meditation master. "Lama Bruce Newman, my old dharma friend, writes openly and honestly about his love for Buddhism and what the path of dharma has brought to his life as a Westerner. This book is an enjoyable, practical read which will inspire interested seekers and encourage them to bring out their best."— Sangye Khandro, translator of Tibetan Buddhism, Light of Berotsana Translation Group "Bruce, your friendly Dharma Pal, takes the beginner by the hand to walk through the intricacies of the path, making complex ideas and terminology plain and simple. A solid, down-to-earth book."— Erik Schmidt, Rangjung Yeshe Publications Bruce Newman has studied and practiced Tibetan Buddhism, mostly in the Kagyu and Nyingma traditions, for almost thirty years. He spent eleven years in India and Nepal studying under his primary teacher, Venerable Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche. Mr. Newman also completed a four-year retreat at Kagyu Samye Ling in Scotland. For the past ten years, he has been practicing and teaching under the guidance of Venerable Gyatrul Rinpoche in Ashland, Oregon. "Bruce Newman, a long-time student of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, relays his own experiences with finding a teacher and establishing a practice front and center in A Beginner's Guide to Tibetan Buddhism: Notes from a Practicioner's Journey. Written by a Westerner for Westerners, this how-to overview contains everything from charts explaining the different schools and lineages of Tibetan Buddhism to explicit advice on discipline, guru devotion, and pitfalls like "emotional enthrallment" (detailed in an absorbing chapter called "Getting it Wrong)."-- Joan Duncan Oliver, Tricycle Magazine, The Buddhist Review Printed Pages: 230. 009791

To Uphold the World: The Message of Ashoka and Kautilya for the 21st Century
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670999466; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we cannot escape the turbocharged global economy we live in. Yet the very forces that link all of us have accelerated the dissolution of traditional sources of social authority and historical identity, spurring increasingly violent counter movements. We realize traditional national politics and the reorganization of all social values around markets cannot hold together the six and a half billion inhabitants of this small planet—the world needs a new global order based on a common global ethic and global justice. To Uphold the World is Bruce Rich's deeply illuminating and thought-provoking exploration of such an alternative. His search to found a civil and international order on principles that transcend the goals of pure economic efficiency and amoral realpolitik is inspired by the writings and lives of two of the greatest figures of ancient India—Ashoka and Kautilya. Ashoka provides a unique example of a world ruler—his empire at the time was arguably the world's largest, richest and most powerful multi-ethnic state—who tried to put into practice a secular state ethic of non-violence and reverence for life, which he also extended to international relations. Kautilya, one of history's greatest political geniuses, wrote the world's first treatise on political economy, the Arthasastra, which proclaims accumulation of material riches as the chief underpinning of human society. Both addressed the questions of political realism and idealism, the role of force and violence in international relations, and the tension between economics and ethics. Through the retelling of mythical and historical accounts, Bruce Rich distils the message of Ashoka and Kautilya to help us uphold our world in the twenty-first century. A unique blend of historical and political narrative combined with reflections on contemporary society, the international environment and human rights, To Uphold the World is particularly timely, because it puts forth a truly original perspective and thinking on our responses to the political, economic and ethical challenges of globalization. 'The reader is drawn powerfully into a long-gone world in which an extraordinary human being dramatically changed his own life and the world around him . . . A highly readable book on the importance and reach of some arguments in ancient India, and on their relevance for global problems today.'—From the Foreword by Amartya Sen. 'To Uphold the World should serve as a source of great inspiration . . . It is my hope and prayer that readers today may be inspired by this tale of a powerful ruler to find ways to contribute to making the world . . . a more just and peaceful place.' —From the Afterword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama Printed Pages: 344. 028850

The Buddhist Dead: Practices, Disources, Representations
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834240; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In its teachings, practices, and institutions, Buddhism in its varied Asian forms has been-and continues to be-centrally concerned with death and the dead. Yet surprisingly "death in Buddhism" has received little sustained scholarly attention. The Buddhist Dead offers the first comparative investigation of this topic across the major Buddhist cultures of India, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Tibet, and Burma. Its individual essays, representing a range of methods, shed light on a rich array of traditional Buddhist practices for the dead and dying; the sophisticated but often paradoxical discourses about death ad the dead in Buddhist texts; and the varied representations of the dead and the afterlife found in Buddhist funerary art and popular literature. The paradigmatic figure of the historical buddha, his death, the symbolism of his funeral, and his relationship to the impurity of the dead are treated in the opening essays by John S. Strong and Gregory Schopen. The deaths of later remarkable adepts, following the Buddha's model, and their significance for Buddhist communities are investigated by Koichi Shinohara, Jacqueline I. Stone, Raoul Birnbaum, and Kurtis R. Schaeffer. A dramatic, often controversial category of exemplary death, that of "giving up the body" or Buddhist suicide, is examined by James Benn and D. Max Moerman. Moving from celebrated masters to ordinary practitioners and devotees, Bryan J. Cuevas, John Clifford Holt, and Matthew T. Kapstein take up the subject of the "ordinary dead" and the intimate relations that often persist between them and those still living, while Hank Glassman, Mark Rowe, and Jason A. Carbine shed light on Buddhist funerary practices and address the physical and social locations of the Buddhist dead.Printed Pages: 401. 102341

Sufi Lyrics
Harvard University Press/IBD; Noida, India; 2015; 067442784X; Softcover; New; 13 x 20 Cm
The poetry of Bullhe Shah (d. 1758) is considered one of the glories of premodern Punjabi literature. Born in Uch, Punjab, in present-day Pakistan, Bullhe Shah drew profoundly upon Sufi mysticism in his writings. His lyrics, famous for their vivid style and outspoken denunciation of artificial religious divisions, have long been held in affection by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs and they continue to win audiences today across national boundaries and in the global Punjabi diaspora. Indeed, many young people in South Asia are already acquainted-albeit unknowingly at times-with the iconic eighteenth-century Punjabi poets words through popular musical genres of the twenty-first century.The striking new translation in English is presented alongside the Punjabi text, in the Gurmukhi script, re-edited on the basis of the best modern Pakistani and Indian editions. Bullhe Shahs Sufi Lyrics thus offers at once the most complete and most approachable version of this great poets works yet available.The Murty classical library of India makes available original texts and modern English translations of the masterpieces of literature and thought from across the whole spectrum of Indic languages over the past two millennia in the most authoritative and accessible formats on offer anywhere. Essays on South India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 812150760X; Reprint; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The essays of this volume were first presented to a conference of South Indian specialists convened at the University of Wisconsin on 7-9 April 1970. This was the second such conference of the Society for South Indian Studies, the first having met at the University of Texas on 5-7 December 1968, from which came a valuable set of essays entitled Symposium on Dravidian Civilization (1971), edited by Andree F. Sjoberg. Robert E. Frykenberg, Department of History, University of Wisconsin, the convenor of the second SSIS conference, intended that the papers and discussion should be a comprehensive "stock-taking" of scholarship on South India. Each of the scholars invited to present papers was specifically asked to make such an assessment in the field of his or her competence and was also asked to suggest potentially useful lines of future research in the light of that assessment. The scope of the essays is broad; they reflect the range of interests and scholarship of Americans in South India. And, though each of the writers accepted the charge of Professor Frykenberg to survey some portion of the totality of knowledge of South Indian society, culture, and history, some essays provide new and sometimes startling formulations. This was an unexpected dividend of the conference. Printed Pages: 220. 030593

The Vimalakirti Sutra (Buddhist Tradition Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120816722; Hardcover; New; New;
The Vimalakirti Sutra, one of the most influential works of the Mahayana Buddhist canon, is of particular importance in the Ch'an or Zen sect. Originally written in sanskrit, probably in the first century C.E., it claims to record events of more than four hundred years earlier. Noted for its eloquent, orderly exposition of the basic tenets of Mahayana, the text is also remarkable for the liveliness of its episodes and frequent touches of humor, rarities in a religious work of this type. The Vimalakirti Sutra is unusual in that its central figure is not a Buddha or Buddhas, but a wealthy townsman, Vimalakirti, who epitomizes the ideal lay believer. For this reason, and because of the Sutra's enduring literary appeal, it has been particularly popular among lay Buddhists in China, Japan, and the other Asian countries where Mahayana doctrines prevail, and has exercised a marked influence on literature and art. Beautifully translated by Burton Watson from the Chinese version of Kumarajiva, The Vimalakirti Sutra is the first-ever translation into englishfrom the popular Chinese version. Including notes to the translation and a glossary, as well as a brief history of early. Buddhism and an introduction to the doctrine of nondualism-a key tenet in Mahayana thought -this translation will delight not only those familiar with the text but also a new generation of readers.Printed Pages: 159. 102429

Policing Insurgencies: Cops as Counterinsurgents
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0198094884; Hardcover; New; New;
For long, the fight against insurgency has been seen mainly as a domain of military forces, and not of the police. The vast literature on counterinsurgency, both historical and contemporary, therefore, tends to focus solely on combat strategies, organizational issues, and politico-military relations. However, national leaders and governments, in a variety of settings, are beginning to grasp the important role played by a neutral, competent, and reliable police force in quelling insurgencies. But there remains an inexplicable dearth of scholarship on this dimension of internal security. This volume, part of the Oxford International Relations in South Asia series, corrects this imbalance, bringing together a series of case studies from Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. It examines the conditions in which police forces have either succeeded or failed in contributing to the resolution of an insurgency situation in a particular society. Each study presents the history of the specific insurgency, the attempts made and reform measures undertaken by the police force to confront it, and the efficacy of those measures, thereby offering insights into a geographically and socially diverse typology of insurgency and counterinsurgency operations from across the world. The Srikara Bhashya: Being the Virasaiva Commentary on the Vedanta-Sutra , 2 Vols
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8188643009; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
"Though the existence of Sripatipanditacharya's Bhashya on the Vedanta Sutras of Badarayana has been long known, it has not so far been available in print. An incomplete Telugu edition was published many years ago but this is the first time the whole text is offered in the Devanagari script. The circumstances under which the edition has been undertaken have been set out at some length in the introduction. "The work is published in two volumes, the first being devoted to the introduction in English and the second to the text, with appendices. "Volume I and contains preface, table of contents and introduction. In translating passages, clearness has been preferred to elegance. Philosophical terms have been rendered on an uniform basis, all attempts at subtlety being avoided. Well-known philosophical terms have, however, been retained. The use of Sanskrit terms and phrases which have acquired a definite significance, has more than mere utility to commend it. While it is difficult to find exact English equivalents for them, their frequent use is likely in the long run to popularise Indian thought in the west. Footnotes have been given chiefly with a view to elucidate the text or the Sruti passages quoted. " Volume 2 contains the Text of the Commentary of Sripatipanditacharya on the Vedanta Sutras. The several appendices included in it will, it is hoped, prove useful to readers. Special attention may perhaps be invited to certain of these appendices which furnish a comparative idea of the division of the work into Adhikaranas and Sutras by certain.
