Kanvasatapathabrahmanam, Volume 6
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120834941; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
It is for the first time that complete critical edition of the Satapathabrahmana of the Kanva School of the Sukla Yajurveda alongwith its English translation is published. This edition has taken into account the readings available in a few more manuscripts, besides those in the published edition in Telugu script, which were not available to Prof. Caland who brought out a critical edition of its first seven Kandas. It is also the first attempt at providing a complete English translation. No doubt the texts of the Satapatha of the Madhyandina and Kanva School do not differ much from Kandas VIII to XVI and Prof. Eggeling's translation of the former is available. Still a fresh attempt at translating the latter portion was felt necessary as a result of detailed discussions with traditional scholars who are actively engaged in Srauta sacrificial performances. 4622 C.R. Swaminathan (Ed. & Tr.)
Kanvasatapathabrahmanam, 6 Vols
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; Hardcover; New; New;
While the texts on a particular art or a group of related arts, provide details of the principles of form and delineate intricacies of techniques, the foundations of these lie in the articulation of a worldview in the Vedas, the speculative thought of the Upani ads and the elaborate system of rites and rituals enumerated in the Brahma?as. The Ka??as Satapatha, Brahma?a is the only available Brahma?a related to Sukla Yajurveda. It has two recensions, namely Madhyandina and Ka?va. It is for the first time that a complete critical edition of the Satapatha Brahma?a of the Ka?va recension, along with its English translation, is published. This edition takes into account for the first time the readings available in a few more manuscripts, besides those in the published edition in Telugu script. It is also the first attempt at providing a complete English translation. No doubt, the texts of the Satapatha of the Madhyandina and Ka?va recensions do not differ much from Ka??as VIII to XVI and Prof. Eggling's translation of the former is available. Still a fresh attempt at translating the latter portion was felt necessary as a result of detailed discussions with traditional scholars who are actively engaged in Srauta sacrificial performances. The remaining text will be appearing soon in the volumes VII and VIII of this series along with glossary and indices.Printed Pages: 2394. 101593

The Unhurried City: Writings on Madras
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143030264; First Edition; Flexiback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
The gateway of south India, Chennai, formerly Madras, is a 350-year-old city that evolved from the English settlement of Fort Saint George, absorbing the neighbouring villages and towns over the years. A fascinating blend of the past and the present, the historical and the personal, Chennai, with its unique proximate location to three south Indian states, is a crucible of the traditions and cultures of peninsular India with its variety of temples, shrines, forts and palaces and its traditional art and dance forms. While retaining a lot of its old-world charm, it has also emerged as the nerve centre for trade, commerce and transportation in south India. The Unhurried City, peppered with photographs and illustrations, puts together stories, articles and poems which celebrate the amalgam that is Chennai. Presented in this anthology are writers as diverse as Ashokamitran, Arundhati Subramaniam, Pudumaippithan, Ramachandra Guha, Timeri Murari, A.R. Venkatachalapathy, Janaki Venkataraman, Theodore Baskaran, V. ARasu, Vijay Nambisan, Gopikrishnan, Salma, Ilampirai, Manushyaputhiran, Gnanakoothan, Dilip Kumar and S. Muthiah, and the marvelous illustrator Manohar Devadoss. Their captivating stories detail some defining aspects of the city: the evolution of the New Black Town which today stands as the commercial heat of Chennai as George Town; the birth and development of cinema in India; the famous Marina skyline, the Thousand Lights Mosque and other heritage buildings; the Ghana songs which rise from the slums; and the river Cooum… The city they create is fascinating and enticing; threatening at times but also rewarding. Absorbing, thought-provoking and rich in detail, this anthology is evocative of the spirit of an exceptional city. Printed Pages: 264. 016652

Old Delhi-New York: Personal Views
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365737; Hardcover; New; New;
In Old Delhi - New York Personal Views, C.S.H. Jhabvala brings his wholly original, personal vision to both cities - Delhi, with its crumbling stones preserved among the explosions of new technologies; New York, with yesterday's marvels of modernity trumped by today's bigger and more astonishing ones. He has the shrewd, sharp, critical and deeply affectionate eye of someone entirely familiar with both places through years of living in them. Combining to a superb degree the talents of an artist and an architect, he is as wittily disrespecful in his visual observation as in the accompanying text. This book is on many levels a uniquely delightful and historically valuable record of two wholly different cities - shown here to be complex and exciting, and each in its own way paradoxically beautiful. Administration Under the Early Western Chalukyas
Sharada Publishing House; Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383221080; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The book presents a comprehensive and critical study of the Early Chalukyan administration, nature of state and sovereignty of kings and social life and shows primarily how they developed the political traditions of their predecessors, the Kadambas, covering a period of study from the middle of the sixth century CE to the last quarter of the eighth century CE. The area covered by it is the territory in southern India which extended from Gujarat in the north to Banavasi in the south, and the coastal region in the west to the eastern frontier of the Pallava dominions in the east, with the off-shoots of their dynasty in Vengi and Gujarat. A comprehensive and critical study of the Early Chalukyan administration here is made on the basis of original sources, published and unpublished epigraphical records from Lata, Andhra, Satara, Pune, Konkana and Vidarbha, foreign writings like that of Tabari and Hiuen-Tsang, Indian literary works on administration and polity, and works of modern scholars-foreign and Indian, relating to the original sources, and also the various aspects of the history of the Chalukyas.Apart from a sectional treatment of the Chalukyas in Indian history volumes, such an attempt to describe the administration and social life in minute details has not been made so far. I hope this volume will fill the gap to a large extent.Printed Pages: 376 with 40 b/w illustrations. 102720

4659 C.V.B. Subrahmanyam
Lectures on Astrology Delivered in India and Abroad
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; Softcover; New;
The book is a collection of talks, which Dr. Subrahmanyam gave from time to time in India, abroad and over the radio. It easily falls into clearly definable parts: there is the stimulating philosophical part where the author shares his rich thinking with his readers and listeners. There are some most useful predictive hints and finally the explanation of the zodiac as the nerve centres and planets as the rhythm of life cosmos and music itself. It is an excellent book and will be a great hit with those who have a desire to go deep into the secrets of jyotisha. The thinking about Jyotisha must lead one into spirituality, which is very pleasing as it is here. The predictive hints, particularly about the meaning of differing value of points denoted by different points in astakavarga is very revealing and shows some lesser known and very useful points for day to day predictions. In some places he had dropped some hints without revealing much like the where Venus is behind Sun, he times marriage according to the difference between them to time the event of marriage. In using transits, the hints he gives are rich material for statistical research, like the transit of Rahu over the eighth lord causing illness and accident.Printed Pages: 425. 102631

The Vedic Map of the Universe
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8187418400; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This Book contains the Vedic blueprint of God, Cosmos, creation of Universes, our Universe-its worlds and inhabitants-all reduced to finite terms of time and distance, shown in maps, with our Planet Earth as the reference point. The Vedic literature of India definitely and firmly expounds that God, who created the tangible worlds with their inhabitants, is super tangible and he and his creation can be readily perceived by the proper use of the senses of A Human being. Many startling scientific facts of today like the preservation of embryos and cloning can be seen to have occurred a eons ago in The Plan of God's creation as already recorded by the Vedic literature long agoThis book contains answers to man kind's many age-old queries: Who is God? What is the Cosmos? Are there multiple universes or only one? Who are the trinity? Is man alone in the universe or are there other worlds and inhabitants in our universe? What happens after death? Is there rebirth? What is the path of liberation? Is there a Doomsday? This book contains answers to man kind's many age-old queries: Who is God? What is the Cosmos? The Masters and The Path
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2010; 8180902498; Hardcover; New; New;
It speaks of many things which have hitherto been studied and discussed within a comparatively small circle, consisting of students well versed in theosophical knowledge and ready to study statements concerning regions which they could not yet enter for themselves, but hoped to enter later and then to verify for themselves the statements made by their seniors. The rapid changes in the world of thought, arising from the nearness of the coming of the world teacher, render useful some information as to a part of the world in which he lives, information which may, perhaps, to some extent prepare the public mind for his teachings. Practical Architecture
Donhead Publishing Ltd; Dorset, UK; 2001; 1873394470; Reprint; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New; 14.5 Cms x 22.5 Cms
Pasley’s work was first written in 1826 as a course of architecture for his students at the Royal Engineer’s School in Chatham. The original title of the book, Outline of a Course of Practical Architecture is therefore a little misleading to the modern reader as the course was primarily concerned with building construction, concentrating on all aspects of brickwork. Major General Sir C.W. Pasley, K.C.B wanted his students to be in a position to construct, maintain and extend all different types of ordinary brick buildings such as barracks, hospitals and store-houses. But whilst his interest was primarily military structures, the construction techniques were also equally applicable to civil buildings. This book, therefore, provides interesting and useful information on how buildings were being constructed a hundred and fifty years ago, and the type of limes and cements that were used. In addition to the material on mortars and cements, it examines in detail the bonds in brickwork and provides full coverage of different types of arches and how they are formed. It also explains the specific aspects relating to the construction of hollow or double walls; copings; chimneys and chimney breasts; gateways; brick ornamentation and so on. Practical Architecture will be of interest to architects, surveyors and structural engineers and all those involved in the repair and conservation of brick structures. 4682 Calvin Malone; Foreword By Steven C. Rockefeller
Razor-Wire Dharma: A Buddhist Life in Prison
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2009; 0861715632; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Calvin Malone has plenty to teach us all about ideas that we rarely associate with the penal system: Dignity. Compassion. Freedom behind bars. He speaks from experience: Malone is nearing the end of a 20-year prison sentence himself. Razor-Wire Dharma is his eloquent, enlightening, and utterly inspiring personal story how he found Buddhism-and real, transformative meaning for his life-despite being in one of the world's harshest environments. Some of his stories are hilarious, some are harrowing, but all express Buddhist wisdom as vividly as any practitioner could hope to do. Malone is living it, and in the unlikeliest of places. For him, the choice of staying true to his principles often requires that he quite literally jeopardize his life, safety, and the few small comforts available to him to try to do what's right. Razor-Wire Dharma makes it clear that if Calvin can do what's right in jail, he can do it anywhere. What's more, it proves that we can, too. Printed Pages: 248. 028079

The Reserve Bank of India: 3 Vols.
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 8175962984; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The Reserve Bank of India – Volume 1 (1935-1951), Volume 2 (1951-1967), Volume 3 (1967-1981): The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was set up in 1935, under private ownership. Its charter was to maintain the monetary stability of India. In 1949, it was nationalized. The RBI manages India’s monetary and exchange rate policies, and the borrowings of the central and state governments. Regulation of commercial banking is another key responsibility. The first volume was printed in 1970 and covers the first sixteen years of the Bank’s working, 1935-51. The sixteen years can be divided into three distinct sub-periods – 1935-39 (the Formative Years), 1939-45 (the War Years) and 1945-51 (the Post-War Years). The second volume, printed in 1998, details the Bank’s role in mobilizing resources for central and state governments, regulating the banking system, and establishing an institutional infrastructure for agricultural and long-term industrial credit in India. It also covers developments in India’s external sector and concludes with an elaborate survey of evolving relations between the central bank and central and state governments in India. The third volume covers a period that saw major changes in India’s financial infrastructure. The nationalization of fourteen banks in July 1969 was the defining economic event of not just the 1960s but the next three decades. The period also saw the domination of fiscal over monetary policy, the breakdown of the Bretton Woods System and the emergence of a new international financial order characterized by floating instead of fixed exchange rates. The Reserve Bank of India: Volume 3
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 8175962992; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The Reserve Bank of India was set up in 1935, under private ownership. Its charter was to maintain the monetary stability of India. In 1949, it was nationalized. The RBI monitors India’s monetary and exchange rate policies, and the borrowings of the central and state governments. Regulation of commercial banking is another key responsibility. This volume narrates in detail how the RBI coped with the changes that it was required to manage. It is a fascinating story of how policy was actually made during a very trying period in the country’s history. The chapters dealing with the management of the external sector are especially revealing since not much has been written about that aspect so far. India: Science and Technology, Volume 3
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789384463045; Soft Cover; New;
Policy-makers often come across the question of how progress and investment in science technology and innovation (STI) can increase employment and upgrade skills and knowledge base in India. The paradox is that while STI has the potential to invent new avenues of economic growth sometimes even with increasing returns the general forces unleashed by STI displace labour and automate a large part of human skills and knowledge. Such a paradox has a great impact on a country like India which is struggling with the ever-increasing pressure of labour force unemployment and economic inequality. It is to be noted that the 12th Five Year Plan has made inclusive growth concomitant of employment generation and skill development a top priority. In this context India: Science and Technology Volume 3 focuses on the state of affairs in India through the lens of employment generation upgradation of skills and several dimensions of the Indian science technology and innovation (STI). Similar to the earlier reports the book is organised into four themes: (a) S&T Human Resources (b) S&T and Industry (c) S&T Outputs and (d) Rural India: S&T for Skills and Employment. While the content and approach of the four themes differ from each other employment and skill development and its inter-linkage with science technology and innovation are the important focal points of discussion.Printed Pages: 600. 101507

Folk Tales From Tibet
Pilgrims Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 817769202X; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 5.5 x 8.5 Inches
Folk Tales from Tibet is a collection of some of the most exquisite stories from Tibet recorded by Captain W F O'Connor. These tales were collected during his tenure as secretary and interpreter with the Lhasa Mission of 1904. They were compiled at a time when the western world know little or nothing about this mystical and exotic country. Hidden high up in the trans-Himalayan Plateau, Tibet separates two of the most ancient cultures, namely China and India. Both have played a big part in its development. The introduction of Buddhism from India changed the life styles and beliefs of the Tibetan people and helped them to develop into a highly conscious Buddhist society. Still its Bon Po origins and traditions are evident in the Buddhist way of life. This is clearly reflected in the psyche of the Tibetan Peoples. It is also perceptible whilst reading these stories. Carefully selected, these tales give a complete picture of the life and styles of the Tibetan peoples of the times. Like all folk tales they are very representative of the cultures that they attempt to portray. Even though most of the tales according to the author fine their origins in both India and China, they have been moulded by time to be representative of the Tibetan culture as well. With the addition of some Tibetan love songs and poetry this volume provides excellent reading for all. Printed Pages: 176. 002350
