Social and Cultural Vision of India: Facts Against Fiction
Pragati Publications; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8173070385; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Book seeks to analyse the socio-cultural milieu of colonial and post-colonial phases of Indian History with a particular emphasis on the history of eastern India. Though based on the records of archival importance, it highlights the deprivation, discrimination and dehumanization of the oppressed. This work marks a sharp departure from the conventional approaches to the study of evils like kulinism, devadasi, prostitution, polygomy, the sati etc. for it focuses on the vicious nexus between the feudal and the priestly classes. It aims at discussing how illiteracy has been allowed to perpetuate to the advantage of the privileged sections of the society. It also dwells upon how the 'renaissance' of the nineteenth century followed by the nationalist movement failed to ameliorate the suffering and miseries of the submerged sections of the society.Printed Pages: 252. 101224

KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904459; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The question that faces governments and militaries the world over is how best to allocate resources for management of defence in the new age. This book, by Shri A.K. Ghosh who has an economics background, explores the framework for change in resource allocation and capability building. It emphasises the importance of introducing programming in Indian defence to serve as a link between defence planning and budgeting. The RMA, force modernisation, cost-benefit analysis,management of risks, and internal and external audits are among the many issues the author has provided a perspective on. It is argued by the author that defence needs to be viewed as a giant business and, where possible, business practices should be introduced. Colonial Delhi: Imperial and Indigenous
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8174791671; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Delhi is a symbol of India’s city building. It is the nerve centre of heritage and modernity, conflicts and contradictions, and richness and poverty. In 1911, King George V announced the shifting of India’s Capital from Calcutta and New Delhi was planned as a showpiece of the glory and magnificence of the British. With the coming up of New Delhi, Shahjahanabad, once one of the most beautiful city of the orient was devalued as a dilapidated, congested, dark, dirty and overcrowded city. To improve the Old City the government in 1937 constituted the Delhi Improvement Trust (DIT). The DIT took up various slum clearance and improvement schemes together with industrial and commercial schemes, which covered about 4,000 Ha of area. These were not the showpiece of Raj, like New Delhi but mark an era of transition of Old Delhi towards planned development. This book narrates the tale of the colonial twins- the Imperial (New) abd DIT's Delhi. It highlights their interconnections, geographies and contrasts.Printed Pages: 248. 104136

Transformation of the Indian Armed Forces 2025: Enhancing India's Defence
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381411131; Hardcover; New; New;
Transformation should lie at the heart of our new approach to defense. The development of transformational capabilities, processes, and force structures should be given strategic focus to meet the principal challenges under our defense strategy. India is already ceased with the necessity of transformation albeit without any documented national security guidelines or operating instructions, which are legislated or have the validation of at least the 'Cabinet Committee on Security'(CCS). In other words the first step would be to create a draft security strategy based on many assumptions, like the foreign policy or the cumulative emerging threat scenario as appreciated by the Defence Intelligence Agency(DIA).This well researched book is a result of the project allotted by the USI under the Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa chair. The book is therefore more as an idea or a theoretical construct, basically to bring in more clarity to the various options available for this great transformation of the Indian military. The author has deliberated upon various landmarks of transformation milestones achieved so far by the three services and given recommendations to further build upon ongoing modernization plan and shift to a higher plane of transformational activities.Printed Pages: 432. 103278

Dalit in Action
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 817022604X; Hardcover; New; New;
The context of increasing marginalization of the poor on account of the failure of the state to ensure effective development has been conducive to the proliferation of the voluntary organisations wedded to the task of radical social transformation. Poor standards of bureaucratic performance and political sincerity, insensitiveness of the planning and delivery system constitute a source of inspiration and strength to such activism. The present work is a study of an important voluntary organistion engaged in social awareness, economic uplift and political consciousness among the neglected sections of society. This institution being empathetic to the needs and aspirations of the poor and disadvantaged has been in a position to arrange succour for those in need. It operates in uncared politically dispossessed and economically distressed inhabitants in the remote rural areas and neglected urban centres. Its initiatives represent a moderate non-violent activism based on the critique of power and domination and seeks in the ultimate to generate a countervailing power in the people. It has been our endeavour to study the origin, growth and present status of this organisation. The impact of its strategy for transformation has been accorded close scrutiny. It has also been our attempt to highlight the issues confronting activism to ensure social justice and citizenship privileges. Printed Pages: 95. 112483

Speaking of Siva: Translated with an Introduction
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 1973; 0140442707; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Speaking of Siva is a collection of ‘mantras’ or free-verse lyrics written by four major saints of the great ‘bhakti’ protest movement which originated in the tenth century A.D. Composed in Kannada, a Dravidian language of South India, the poems are lyrical expressions of love for the god Siva. They mirror the urge to bypass tradition and ritual, to concentrate on the subject rather than the object of worship, and to express kinship with all living things in moving terms. Passionate, personal, fiercely monotheistic, these free verses possess an appeal, which is timeless and universal. Printed Pages: 199. 011640

457 A.K. Ramanujan; vi Datta Chandra Shobhi (Advisory Editor); Translated from Kannada By Tonse N.K. Raju and Shouri Daniels-Ramanujan
Poems from a Novella
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0195674987; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
These four works add yet another dimension to the rich contribution A.K. Ramanujan has made to Indian and American letters. The books of poems The Lotus in the Navel, Kuntobille, and And Other Poems are written in an extraordinary variety of modes and moods. In Kannada, the language of his childhood, he roams freely and widely. He quarrels with himself, with his traditional roots and his adopted country, giving us memorable poems such as: O Lord, Whether You Exist A King of Soliloquies, and The River. The prose work, Someone Else s Autobiography, is an unusually complex story told by the fictional K. K. Ramanujan, who is embarking on a writing cure at the instigation of one A.K. Ramanujan, an obscure academic and minor poet. The ironies proliferate. Ostensibly, the outer frame is a three-day period when K. K. Ramanujan, as a young lad, goes with his father to Madras, to visit a dying relative. Inside this frame, there are multiple stories, which are prolepsistic and backward l ooking the storytellers share certain obsessions, notably that of different kinds displacement and its opposite: that of twinning, or the loss of boundaries between the self and someone else. In this ingeniously diffracted narrative, through the stories of those he encounters by chance, the author has managed to tell us a great deal about his own life-story. Though the crisis of consciousness depicted in the novella is thoroughly modern, the author has chosen a traditional Indian mode of telling it. Printed Pages: 256. 013226

Prehistoric Delhi and Its Neighbourhood
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8173050163; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
The book takes back the antiquity of Delhi and neighbouring areas, located on the contours of the Aravallis, to several hundred thousand years back. It gives a first hand account of one of the biggest palaeolithic sites in the Indian sub-continent, discovered and excavated by the author, where stone age tools were recovered from different palaeo-channel areas in developmental sequence. The palaeo-channels were formed as a result of shifting of Yamuna which in turn was caused due to massive tectonic movements. The richness of the site in variety and quality of tools makes it a text book site for the students of pre-history and also for the common man. The book gives a glimpse of life of early men who roamed, prepared tools and hunted animals in an entirely different environmental and climatic conditions that prevailed around Delhi more than two hundred thousand years back. Profusely illustrated with maps, line drawings and rare photographs, the volume paints a vivid picture of life in Delhi and surrounding territories from earliest times to the beginning of the historical period.The results of the excavations conducted by the author in 1991 and 1992, opens a vast area for further investigations in preshistoric archaeology and palaeo-anthropology as the palaeo-channels also hold promise for the possible discovery of fossil remains of stone age man in India. Gandhian Philosophy of Voluntarism: A Comparative Study of Development in the Ashram Villages and Outside
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351250760; Hardcover; New; New;
The role of voluntary organizations (VDOs) cannot be overestimated in the field of rural development. However, they fall under different categories — some work purely as professional organizations and some as missions. The Banwasi Seva Ashram (BSA) belongs to the latter category and is one of the most known of the Gandhian Organizations. Set up in 1954 in the tribal region of Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, the Ashram has worked for the last six decades to transform the tribal villages. Its activities are based on Gandhian principles of Swaraj and Sarvodaya. The aim of the Ashram is to develop rural areas through the efforts of a dedicated leadership, cooperation and voluntarism. This book explores and evaluates the work done by the Banwasi Seva Ashram. It particularly focuses on the recent challenges before the Ashram and its limitations. It also provides some alternatives for Gandhian voluntary action in the future. Printed Pages: 176. 112514

Indian Buddhism
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120808185; Third Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
This book describes the Buddhism of India on the basis of the comparison of all the available original sources in various languages. It falls into three approximately equal parts. The first is a reconstruction of the original Buddhism presupposed by the traditions of the different schools known to us. It uses primarily the established methods of textual criticism, drawing out of the oldest extant texts of the different schools their common kernel. This kernel of doctrine is presumably common Buddhism of the period before the great schisms of the fourth and third centuries BC. It may be substantially the Buddhism of the Buddha himself, though this cannot be proved: at any rate it is a Buddhism presupposed by the schools as existing about a hundred years after the Parinirvana of the Buddha, and there is no evidence to suggest that it was formulated by anyone other than the Buddha and his immediate followers. The second part traces the development of the 'Eighteen Schools' of early Buddhism, showing how they elaborated their doctrines out of the common kernel. Here we can see to what extent the Sthaviravada, or 'Theravada' of the Pali tradition, among others, added to or modified the original doctrine. The third part describes the Mahayana movement and the Mantrayana, the way of the bodhisattva and the way of ritual. The relationship of the Mahayana to the early schools is traced in detail, with its probable affiliation to one of them, the Purva Saila, as suggested by the consensus of the evidence. Particular attention is paid in this book to the social teaching of Buddhism, the part which relates to the 'world' rather than to nirvana and which has been generally neglected in modern writings Buddhism.Printed Pages: 619. 102370

Indian Kavya Literature (Volume 1: Literary Criticism)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8120804465; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian Kavya Literature is planned in eight volumes as a comprehensive study of literature (kavya) in the literary criticism of that same tradition. Surprising as it may seem, Indian literature has not till now been presented from this obvious, natural and necessary point of view in any modern language, except in a limited and primarily bibliographical manner by Krishnamachariar in his history of Classical Sanskrit Literature (1937). Instead, Indian literature has been misrepresented and misjudged from a narrowly European, and therefore quite alien and unhelpful, standpoint in the modern works on it widely accepted as 'standard'. It is exceedingly odd that even several modern Indian writers have performed the feat of adopting this alienated and distant view, diminishing Indian culture in the midst of the struggle for Indian freedom from colonialism. The present work is intended to restore Indian literature to independence and to India, as a step towards that freedom from spiritual colonialism which India has yet to attain. But the method of presentation here involves no political discussions and is very simple and straightforward: the aim is the enjoyment of the literature as it was meant to be enjoyed. The first volume prepares the way for the enjoyment of Indian literature by presenting Indian literary criticism, thus clarifying the techniques and aims of Indian writers. This criticism includes the various aesthetic theories as to the nature of the enjoyment of literature by readers and audiences, the techniques of dramaturgy and poetics whereby this enjoyment is created, the nature of the literary genres (drama, epic, the novel, etc.) and a sketch of the milieu of the writers and critics.Printed Pages: 295. 102592

Indian Kavya Literature, Volume 7: The Wheel of Time (in 2 Parts)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8120820282; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries starts with Vidyakara`s retrospect over anonymous poets (named ones having mostly found their places in earlier volumes). After some smaller anthologies a few novels and Mankhaka`s mythological epic we come to a historical epic. History is the most substantial source of matter for literature in the volume. That might seem to contrast with Vol. Vi, but as literature its aim is always are, not facts which narrows the gap.Printed Pages: 1135. 102593

Indian Kavya Literature (Volume 8: The Performance of Kavya in the + 14)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120834488; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Where kavya flourished, performance in the streets and in theatres also flourished. So theatre in Andhra and everywhere to the south, also in Orissa, Mithila and Nepala, flourished in the +14. In Andhra Rudra's Yayaticarita is the earliest extant play on that famousking. The Telugu translation of the Premabhirama gives us a substantial street play vithi describing scenes in the Kakatiya capital. Narasimha's Kadambari play has an improved ending. Agastya composed two epics from the Mahabharata and a biography from the Harivamsa. In Rajasthan Rayanasehara's novel has his hero given troupes of actors to perform for him whilst he is travelling. In Gurjara Jinaprabha's Kalpapradipa (completed in Yoginipattana = 'Dhilli') is a miserable history of sacrilege and Islamic terror. In Sarvananda's Jagaducarita the merchant foresaw a famine and stored enough grain to feed all western India plus Kasi. Princess Ganga composed the Sanskrit epic Madhuravijaya on her husband's slaying of the Turkish suratrana in Madurai, a decisive event in Vijayanagara (and Indian) history. Ahobala's campu is a comic satire matallika on a festival there. Venkatanatha's allegorical play is of interest only for some incidental details. In Kerala we have an anonymous bhana set in Mahodaya and Laksmidasa's long message poem Sukasandesa, which is just a dream he had about his wife Rangalaksmi (Apphulla). Purnasarasvati composed a strict sataka Hamsasandesa and an ecological play on a victory of birds over storms of the rainy season. Autumn then regulated the round of seasons. The actor Damodara composed a Sanskrit epic and Malayalam manipravala campu, both on the actress Unniyati. From Tirabhukti (Mithila) we have comedies by Jyotirisvara and adunandana. From Nepala there are several Sanskrit plays. In Balinese the Sutasoma is an enormous vajrayana work.Printed Pages: 433. 102594
