Arya and Other Stories
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125056807; Softcover; New;
She is from a village. She is angry at her conservative mother. She is a flawed activist. She is being judged. She makes compromises. She cannot die, even if she wills it. She chooses to command. Her children want to do away with her. She looks for friendships online. She craves for fame. She musters the courage to pursue her lover. What binds her through all these is her strength; she is indomitable. Arya and Other Stories is a collection of twelve short stories by Chandrika Balan, known in the Malayalam literary world as Chandramati. Balan brings to the reader a glimpse into the world of the woman in a village where feminism has reached. Here men know what feminism is; women know they can be independent; and, children know that their mother is not a caring-bearing machine. Balanís exploration is into the kind of questions a woman here goes through.Employing different writing stylesórealism, magic realism and postmodernismóBalan weaves a sensitive fabric that is a study of the contemporary woman. Accompanied by K. Satchidanandanís scholarly introduction that traces womenís writing tradition in Kerala, this collection of poignant and incisive short stories is bound to interest every reader of fiction and translation.Printed Pages: 144. 101883

Buddhism and Vedanta: Contrast and Similarity
Gen Next Publication/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351280576; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Both Buddhism and Vedanta emerging from the same soil and talking about the universal philosophy related to physical and metaphysical worlds differ apparently so far their philosophical outlook, religious angle and social structure is concerned. But in reality both are impressed from each other. Buddhism while developing its base borrowed a lot from Vedanta's philosophy to build up a separate religious mansion of its own. Evils produced by the practice of karmkandas and ritualism supported by Brahminism provided fertile ground for growth of Buddhism in India. The philosophical contribution of the Buddha has uniqueness not in its originality, but in the manner and way that he represented. What he talked about the universe, world, birth, rebirth, death, mind, consciousnesses etc., are not new. A lot has been said about that in Indian great ancient philosophical as well as religious epics. However, Buddhist attack upon Hinduism for blind practice of karmkandas and ritualism badly shook the root of Vedantism. This is another fact that Sankracharya and his followers, provided a stable ground to Vedantic philosophy and Hinduism to revitalize. Thereafter, Buddhism began to lose ground in India due to its inherent weaknesses, and esoteric practice of Vajrayana and Mantrayana maligning the image of Buddhism. The present book, namely, Buddhism and Vedanta (Contrast and Similarity), critically examining the aforesaid facts, thoroughly discusses rise and growth of Buddhism and its inclination towards Vedic philosophy.Printed Pages: 295. 106186

Catholic Religion: A Statement of Christian Teaching and History
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351481041; Softcover; New;
The book attempts to give what might be called a bird's-eye-view of Catholic religion, as developed under "the providence of God and the folly of man"; also presenting simultaneously interrelation of these facts to each other and to human life. The author deals with the theme in the language of daily experience and with a view to practical needs.Inter-alia, the first part briefly touches upon the religious needs and ideals of humanity--often vestiges of great truths that suggest a lost inheritance of knowledge--perceived by poets and philosophers, expressed by them beautifully but darkly, without the sureness and fullness of revealed truth: and so leads upto the historical facts of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ and the supernatural revelation perfected in Him.The second part deals with the Christian Church, its origin and authority as a society and a teacher, and its relation to the Bible and to the religion of Christ. The third part deals with the practical and ultimate work of the Church, in the Sacraments that consecrate the several stages of the Christian's life. The fourth part presents a perspective sketch of the history of the Christian religion from its origin to the present time.This grounded presentation ends with a brief `Chart of Historical Data', clipped by an elaborate `General Index', thereby covering subjects like History, Christian Studies, Biography, Philosophy, and Biblical exegesis; meant equally for Scholars, Researchers, Historians, Philosophers, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Institutions, libraries and lay readers who wish to understand & strengthen the profound insights of the religion in a lucid language. Man's destiny has been shaped by two dominant and hostile forces-war and love. Throughout the ages people have been asking, how to prevent wars? The answer has always evaded them. Yet the people of the hidden land of Tibet found it. This happened when Buddhism gained sway over Tibet. Centuries ago, before Buddhism reached Tibet, the Tibetans were followers of a nature worshipping religion called upon by them. Then they were warlike and aggressive. They carried their swords to Mongolia, China, Turkistan, India and Burma. Buddhism came, slowly there was a change of heart in people and war lost all its fascination. Sir Charles Bell's The Religion of Tibet treats this enchanting theme. It does it in two parts: How it came, and how it ruled. The author has consulted hitherto unknown Chinese and Tibetan sources, in addition to the known works on Tibet. His nineteen years residence in Tibet gave him an opportunity to consult the most authoritative people in Tibet regarding his subject. The result of all his infatiguable labour is this wonderful book. A book for all statesmen, philosophers and students of religion. Printed Pages: 252 with 69 halftones and 3 maps. 020866

Portrait of a Dalai Lama: The Life and Times of the Great Thirteenth
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121509440; Reprint; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Dalai Lamas of Tibet are unique. A succession of fourteen have been guiding the spiritual life of the Tibetan people for nearly six centuries, and for three hundred years have held secular power as well. Revered as human embodiment of Chenrezig, the Buddha of Compassion, they choose, out of their great desire to benefit others, to reincarnate life after life as the Dalai Lama. Thubten Gyatso, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, was born to a peasant family in 1876. He was discovered, brought to Lhasa and enthroned at the age of three. Educated as a monk, he took over full power when he was eighteen and ruled until his death thirty-seven years later. His rule would prove to be more strong, more radical and more complete than that of any Dalai Lama since the Great Fifth. "His courage and energy were inexhaustible. He recoiled from nothing." Writes Charles Bell, who as Political Officer in the Himalayas first met him in 1910. They developed a firm and affectionate friendship, politically and personally, that would last for twenty-five years. Portrait of a Dalai Lama is packed full of history, stories, facts and figures, anecdotes and conversation, and is compelling reading. Printed Pages: 414 with half-tones. 006446

The present book is an attempt to speak about the life of the Tibetan people in their own homes. The contents are leaved on the author`s first-hand knowledge of Tibetan life during a residence of nearly twenty years from conversation with his Tibetan acquaintances in their own language not through interpreters. In order to keep this volume within moderate limits he had to exclude from it many aspects of Tibetan life. Shut-off from the outer world by their immense mountain barriers Tibet still presented a virgin field of enquiry. There has been little change in the inner life of the people during the last thousand years. As the area is very large and the intercourse of one part with another is restricted, the manners and customs vary in different districts and provinces.Printed Pages: 411. 102527

The People of Tibet
Low Price Publications/D.K. Publishers Distributors Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1997; 8175360852; Hardcover; New; New;
The area of Tibet is large. Intercourse of one part with another is restricted, for the country is difficult and the means of travel are primitive. It follows that manners and customs vary in different districts and provinces. So a custom or interpretation need not be condemned as inaccurate because another sojouner has seen or heard it different elsewhere. The present book is an attempt to speak about the life of the people in their own homes, a miscellany of facts, and occassional ideas to clothe those facts, are all that this book can offer. Reforming China's Government: Fixing the Worst Government in the World
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380177359; Hardcover; New; New;
When Mao Zedong came to power in 1949, he created what was arguably "the worst government in the world" - vicious, misguided, and unbelievably wasteful and destructive. After Mao's death in 1976 his successors began national recovery and government reform. The theology of Communist command/control was abandoned, replaced by a highly successful ... See Moremarket based economy. This book describes the strategies for economic development, government reform, revitalization of the People's Liberation Army, and the rising tide of urban expansion. But it also documents deliberate and continuing government neglect of education, health care, massive environmental problems and the serious plight of farmers, villages and urban slums.Printed Pages: 328. 103219

Principles of Conflict Economics: A Primer for Social Scientists
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2009; 0521698650; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 225 Mm
Conflict economics contributes to an understanding of violent conflict in two important ways. First, it applies economic analysis to diverse conflict activities such as war, arms races, and terrorism, showing how they can be understood as purposeful choices responsive to underlying incentives. Second, it treats appropriation as a fundamental economic activity, joining production and exchange as a means of wealth acquisition. Drawing on a half-century of scholarship, this book presents a primer on the key themes and principles of conflict economics. Although much work in the field is abstract, the book is made accessible to a broad audience of scholars, students, and policymakers by relying on historical data, relatively simple graphs, and intuitive narratives. In exploring the interdependence of economics and conflict, the book presents current perspectives of conflict economics in novel ways and offers new insights into economic aspects of violence. Contents 1. Introduction: definition and scope of conflict economics 2. Production possibilities and the guns versus butter tradeoff 3. Rational choice and equilibrium 4. Fundamentals of game theory 5. A bargaining model of conflict 6. Conflict between states 7. Civil war and genocide 8. Terrorism 9. Geography and technology of conflict. 10. Arms rivalry, proliferation, and arms control 11. Military alliances 12. Conflict success functions and the theory of appropriation possibilities Appendix A. Statistical methods Appendix B. A more formal bargaining model of conflict. Printed Pages: 343 with 115 line figures and 17 tables. 027778

Gods of Management: The Changing World of Organisations
Penguin Portfolio; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143102850; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
ĎIt was always a myth that there is one best way to manage, but it has been a pervasive myth and a damaging one, to both individuals and organizations. The Greeks at least recognized a variety of gods, even if each had his or her favourite. We need a law of requisite variety in management as well as a theory of cultural propriety.í The four gods of the title symbolize the very different styles of management and culture to be found in todayís organizations. Zeus is the dynamic entrepreneur who rules over companies of the club cluture, characterized by speed of decision and rapid, intuitive communication. Apollo, god of order and bureaucracy, is the patron of the role culture, based not on personalities but on definition of the jobs to be done. Athena, goddess of craftsmen, recognized only expertise as the basis of power and influence: hers is the task culture. Dionysus is the god preferred by artists and professionals within the existential culture, people who owe little or no allegiance to a boss. Under this witty and sparkling allegory, Charles Handy, Britainís foremost business guru, makes a serious analysis of the changing patterns of work and business. Gods of Management is a world bestseller which is required reading for managers, business students and everyone who wants to be a survivor on a world of constantly changing organizational culture. Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8173050317; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 37 x 27 Cm
Art is the practical application of knowledge to the production all things whatever that can administer to the uses of man : To the humblest necessities of the body, to the highest gratifications of the mind. The word art, then, is all-comprehensive. The elder writers, especially, make no distinctions in the application of the word art and arts. This illustrated encyclopaedia attempts to distinguish between and artist, and an artificer, or an artisan. With this wide range of the term arts, an exhibition that contains everything relating to art will be a world in little : And yet, if such an exhibition were possible, what an important and interesting study would it afford. This work has been divided into two distinct volumes. The first volume is devoted to what we have been accustomed to call the Useful arts. This includes all the processes and products that have relation to our daily sustenance. The second volume on Fine arts displays pictorial representations of Architecture, sculpture and Painting : Ancient and Modern : And depicts a familiarity with the beautiful Sculptures of antiquity, with the noble paintings of the great modern schools and the glorious monuments of Grecian and middle-age architecture. The union of all the art has essentially been kept in mind. These volumes are "a School of Design" of no inconsiderable value by this union of the useful and the ornamental. This encyclopaedia is the most complete Polytechnicon ever opened for public instruction and amusement. A glance at the list of contents (given in the back flap) will show how wide is the survey and how great the feast of intellectual pleasure. Illustrated with as many as 4000 sketches, this monumental work will prove an invaluable asset to the art lovers.Printed Pages: 848. 100269

The Surangama Sutra: (Leng Yen Ching)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510023; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Surangama Sutra, or Leng Yen Ching, is a Buddhist apocalyptic text, which, alongwith an abridged commentary by Ch'an Master Han Shan, has ably been translated from Chinese into English by Charles Luk, Containing apocalyptic thinking. It is asserted that this sutra will dissapear upon the disappearance of the dharma. The basic concern of the text is to point out as to how the law of casuality terminates in the emergence of delusion, and on account of delusion samsaric bondage is given rise to. The only way to overcome delusion, and thereby bondage, is to attain the state of enlightenment. Since the attainment of enlightenment is seen as the solution of the problem, the text, thus, engages in laying down the road map of specific practices that enable one to reach the liberative goal of salvation, which is freedom from the law of casuality, and thereby from delusion and bondage. Insofar as the store consciousness (alaya) continues to function, to that extent casuality will remain operative. The methods, as developed in the text, are thus aimed at breaking the alaya. Upon the destruction of three marks of the alaya, which are self-evidencing, perception and form, the practitioner attains what is called the Surangama samadhi, or the gateway to Perfect Enlightenment. Upon the attainment of Enlightenment is revealed the nature of Tathagata store of One Reality. Printed Pages: 286. 032452

Introduction to Probability (Second Edition)
Universities Press; Hyderabad, India; 2009; 0821848577; Second Edition; Paperback; New;
This text is designed for an introductory probability course at the university level for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in mathematics, physical and social sciences, engineering, and computer science. It presents a thorough treatment of ideas and techniques necessary for a firm understanding of the subject. The text is also recommended for use in discrete probability courses. The material is organized so that the discrete and continuous probability discussions are presented in a separate, but parallel, manner. This organization does not emphasize an overly rigorous or formal view of probability and therefore offers some strong pedagogical value. Hence, the discrete discussions can sometimes serve to motivate the more abstract continuous probability discussions. Features: Key ideas are developed in a somewhat leisurely style, providing a variety of interesting applications to probability and showing some nonintuitive ideas. Over 600 exercises provide the opportunity for practicing skills and developing a sound understanding of ideas. Numerous historical comments deal with the development of discrete probability.
