5009 Charles Reed and David Ryall (eds.); Foreword By Richard Dannatt
The Price of Peace: Just War in the Twenty-first Century
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0521677858; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
Lively political and public debates on war and morality have been a feature of the post-Cold War world. The Price of Peace argues that a re-examination of the just war tradition is therefore required. The authors suggest that despite fluctuations and transformations in international politics, the just war tradition continues to be relevant. However they argue that it needs to be reworked to respond to the new challenges to international security represented by the end of the Cold War and the impact of terrorism. With an interdisciplinary and transatlantic approach, this volume provides a dialogue between theological, political, military and public actors. By articulating what a reconstituted just war tradition might mean in practice, it also aims to assist policy-makers and citizens in dealing with the ethical dilemmas of war. • An accessible examination of what the notion of a 'just war' means in the modern world, in the context of mass terrorism, rogue states and the Iraq War • A distinguished group of academics (politics, philosophy and theology), and practitioners (soldiers, church people, civil servants, lawyers) provide a major statement on the moral status of war • Will interest an academic audience but also those from religious communities, the military and policy-makers interested in foreign policy and defence issues Contents Foreword Richard Dannatt; 1. Introduction Charles Reed and David Ryall; Part I. A Framework for Ethical Decision Making: State and Civil Society-Based Approaches: 2. Buddhist Monastic Discipline: The Sanskrit Pratimoksa Sutras of the Mahasamghikas and Mulasarvastivadins
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120813391; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
Buddhist Monastic Discipline contains two significant Buddhist monastic disciplinary texts-the Sanskrit Pratimoksa Sutras of the Mahasamghikas and Mulasarvastivadins-for the first time, translated into English. They are printed on facing pages for ease of comparison. One of the texts is that of a very early Buddhist school first appearing in the 4th century BCE, and the other is one not mentioned in the records until the 7th century CE. The contrasting texts thus highlight the development of Buddhist sectarian practices. Two introductory chapters precede the translated Sutras. The first gives an overview of the rise of Buddhist monasticism; analyzes Vinaya, that portion of the Buddhist canon regulating the life of monks and nuns; and proisionally identifies the problematics inherent in Pratimoksa study, pointing the way to needed research. The second chapter describes how the two translated Sutras were found and edited.Printed Pages: 156. 102347

A Theology of Public Life
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521832268; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
What has Washington to do with Jerusalem? In the raging debates about the relationship between religion and politics, no one has explored the religious benefits and challenges of public engagement for Christian believers - until now. This ground-breaking book defends and details Christian believers' engagement in contemporary pluralistic public life not from the perspective of some neutral ‘public’, but from the particular perspective of Christian faith, arguing that such engagement enriches both public life and Christian citizens' faith themselves. As such it offers not a ‘public theology’, but a ‘theology of public life’, analyzing the promise and perils of Christian public engagement, discussing the nature of civic commitment and prophetic critique, and the relation of a loving faith to a liberal politics of justice. Theologically rich, philosophically rigorous, politically, historically and sociologically informed, this book advances contemporary discussion of ‘religion and public life’ in fundamental ways. • Introduces readers to relevant conversations in the fields of philosophy, political science, history, and sociology • Builds on the last few decades' revisionist appreciation of the thought of Augustine • Advances contemporary discussions of 'religion and public life' in fundamental ways Contents Introduction: life in the epilogue, during the world; Part I. A Theology of Engagement: Introduction; 1. Life before God; 2. Life in the world; 3. Life together; Part II. The Liturgy of Citizenship: Introduction; 4. Faithful citizenship; 5. Hopeful citizenship; 6. Charitable citizenship; Conclusion: The republic of grace; or, the public ramifications of heaven. Printed Pages: 400. 018639

Continental Church Furniture in England: A Traffic in Piety
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 185149376X; Hard Cover; New; New; 22 Cms x 29 Cms
This is the first book on the history of the virtually unknown phenomenon of the importation of Continental church furniture into England since the early 19th century. Lavishly illustrated, well over one hundred pieces, from pulpits to choir stalls, are discussed in detail. The taste for this furniture was fuelled by the Romantic medievalising enthusiasm of Augustus Welby Pugin and the Catholic Revival, as well as the eccentric whims of the Anglican Squiresons. It was clandestinely acquired mainly from France and the Low Countries by English antique dealers and other enterprising agents, including architects and the aristocracy, as a result of the catastrophic upheavals of the French Revolution. Surprisingly, much of the furniture is in the Baroque style. The historical setting for this nostalgic explosion is described, as well as an account of some of the more unusual patronage, and the story is pursued into the 20th century. The second half of the book comprises a discussion of the most important specimens in the national collection, and their provenance, as well as a gazetteer of such material throughout England. The Author Charles Tracy completed his Ph.D. thesis at the Courtauld Institute on English Gothic choir-stalls. Since then he has extensively researched the largely ignored subject of English medieval church furniture and woodwork. He is the author of the two volume study, English Gothic Choir-Stalls, 1200-1540, and the Catalogue of English Medieval Furniture and Woodwork for the V & A Museum. In addition he has published many articles in learned journals on related topics, from the Watching Chamber at St. Alban’s Cathedral to the early 14th century painted screen at Kingston Lacy, Dorset. His interest in Continental church furniture of all periods goes back over ten years and he has made a particular study of the material in Belgium and France. * The first book ever to be published on this subject * Over 350 superb black and white illustrations and 20 colour photographs * The result of ten years’ research, written by a leading authority on church furniture * Will be of interest to furniture and art historians, museums, libraries, Puginians and students of the English Catholic Revival Printed Pages: 300 with 20 colour and 350 b/w illustrations. 017874

Islam and the Moral Economy: The Challenge of Capitalism
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0521863775; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
How do modern Muslims adapt their traditions to engage with today's world? Charles Tripp's erudite and incisive book considers one of the most significant challenges faced by Muslims over the last sixty years: the challenge of capitalism. By reference to the works of noted Muslim scholars, the author shows how, faced by this challenge, these intellectuals devised a range of strategies which have enabled Muslims to remain true to their faith, whilst engaging effectively with a world not of their own making. The work is framed around the development of their ideas on Islamic socialism, economics and the rationale for Islamic banking. While some Muslims have resorted to confrontation or insularity to cope with the challenges of modernity, most have aspired to innovation and ingenuity in the search for compromise and interaction with global capitalism in the twenty-first century. • Sophisticated treatment of the diverse Muslim views of capitalism • Written by a highly regarded political scientist and scholar of the Middle East • A book for policymakers, journalists, professionals, students, all those looking for a clearer and more in-depth study of Islam and its interaction with the West Contents 1. The Inner Life
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178223163; Softcover; New;
The talks which comprise this book, The Inner Life were given to students of Leadbeater and Annie Besant, his close associate and fellow clairvoyant. Leadbeater assumed that his audience was thoroughly familiar with his enlarged world view. In this new edition it seems necessary to sketch out some of the main features of this view, to make the book easily comprehensible. This expanded world view did not originate with Leadbeater, though he filled in many details previously left blank. His scheme fits into a venerable tradition which has been with mankind since prehistoric times. History shows a kernel of truth appearing through the ages, sometimes taught openly and dominating a culture, as in ancient Greece, at other times taught in secret to the few who sought. The principles have been styled quite differently and various aspects have been emphasized at different times, but the fundamentals have remained unchanged throughout the centuries. This core of understanding is variously known today as the ancient wisdom, the occult philosophy, the esoteric tradition theosophy.Printed Pages: 410. 102242

Paths to Asian Medical Knowledge
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121506085; First Indian Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present work is guided by two central ideas: that medical traditions are based on coherent forms of practice and belief about illnesses, and that these systems are embedded in the symbols and world views that characterize the historical differences between civilizations. These new essays by leading scholars from Europe and North America focus on issues in the humoral and biomedical traditions of several Asian countries. How do patients and practitioners know what they know? What kinds and categories of information constitute evidence about pathological processes? What reasoning do they find persuasive, and under what circumstances? From the perspectives of history and cultural anthropology, the authors consider problems of knowledge in Chinese medicine, the Hindu-Buddhist traditions of South Asian medicine, and the Greco-Arabic traditions of Islamic medicine. Whether discussing Japanese anatomy texts or popular culture, Chinese case histories or burial practices, Islamic humoralism or clinical reasoning, in Ayurveda, the essays in Paths to Asian Medical Knowledge are richly documented, interesting to read, and suggest new theoretical avenues for medical anthropology. Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143101544; First Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
In the bylanes and ghats of Kashi, or Banaras, Yamini’s and Shiva’s stories unfold. Fat, sharp-tongued Yamini is thirty-eight and unmarried. By day she teaches maths in school. At night she leaves her obese self behind and takes to the skies, light as a bird in her dreams, dancing in the air above the ghats with the love of her life. The ghat is also where Shiva, now eleven years old, was found abandoned by his adoptive father, the charismatic and ambitious sadhu Bhyom Baba. Growing up in Baba’s ashram near Dashaswamedh Ghat, Shiva eavesdrops on the conversations of sadhus as they pass through the ashram, and hopes to some day find his mother among the women thronging the ghats. One day, Yamini meets Duncan, a researcher, who unlocks the romantic in her and suddenly she feels like the person from her dreams, light and loved. In another part of the city, Shiva is chosen to enact the role of chhota Hanuman in the Ramnagar Ramlila. There he befriends the shy, quiet Shantanu, who plays the part of Janaki, Ram’s wife. Against the backdrop of the Lila, where political battlelines have been drawn by the city’s rival ashram factions, the final horrific truth about Shiva’s life is revealed, and his story merges with Yamini’s. Meanwhile, Upriver is about two outsiders struggling to find the courage to swim upriver, till an unforeseen connection brings them together. Resonating with the sights and sounds of an ancient place in the heart of modern India, this remarkable debut novel tells a story that is at once poignant and captivating. Printed Pages: 216. 029133

Sastric Tradation in Indian Classical Dances
Agam Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2015; 8173201390; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 26 Cm
The book 'Sastric Tradition in Indian Classical Dances' focuses on textual tradition of performing arts (in the context of dance only). The rules pertaining to the fourfold Abhinaya in Natyasastra and other Sanskrta Laksana Granthas are correspondingly imperative and valid for all the classical dance forms even today. It is well known that our youngsters are much comfortable with English and for them Sanskrta appears to be an alien language, similar is the case with Rajabhasa Hindi. Keeping this in mind and for the benefit of non-Hindi speaking readers and researchers of India and abroad the present work is attempted in English. I hope it will serve the purpose and benefit the enthusiasts.Printed Pages: 248. 101521

Tribal Peasant Unrest: A Paradox in Welfare Administration
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8174791302; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Tribals of Orissa are marginal farmers who besides tilling the soil and domesticating livestock depend on forest products for their sustenance. They are loyal and peace loving people with low level of aspirations. The British Government policy was carefully formulated to deal with the aboriginal and sensitive tribal communities. In Mayurbhanj, an erstwhile feudatory State of Orissa with sixty two tribal groups, the experience was slightly different. Notwithstanding the welfare administration and cautious handling of the sensitive tribals, political disturbance cropped up at intervals for various socio-economic reasons which had to be tactfully dealt with by the local Chiefs through whom the British Government ran the show. Simultenous to the Congress movement, the peasants were organized as Prajamandals to spearhead the popular struggle till 1947 when the Chief handed over power to the Prajamandal leaders. The author brings under focus the tribal peasants uprising with great sympathy and understanding in the present book giving great insight to the troublesome period of Indian history.Printed Pages: 310.l 104238

This book unfolds before the scholarly world many interesting aspects relating to the works of two celebrated poets of our land, Kalidasa and Rabindranath Tagore. Dr. Chinmoy Howlader has treated the subject from some newer angles. He has very dispassionately put some new lights on his theme examined from linguistic, literary aesthetic and philosophical viewpoints. Classical Indian Sculpture: (300 B.C. to A.D. 500)
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2004; 8180900010; Hardcover; New; New;
The purpose of this little book is to introduce classical Indian sculpture, and the examples shown have been selected chiefly because of their sculptural qualities. The book is too small to include detailed information, but the short bibliography will perhaps be useful to the reader for further study. In spite of recent excavations, the dating of the various schools cannot be regarded as final. The dates, particularly of Gandhara, Kushan, Mathura and Amaravati are controversial. Further excavation and discoveries may change the dates usually accepted for the Kushan and Gandhara periods. CONTENTS: Preface; 1. Historical Outline 2. Early Icons and Maurya Art 3. Sunga Art 4. History and Culture of Tamil Nadu: As Gleanedfrom the Sanskrit Inscriptions, Volume 1 (Up to c. AD 1310)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124603804; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Inscriptions are the most authentic and vital source for reconstructing the history of India. Epigraphs were composed in Sanskrit in various parts of India and the ancient Tamil country was no exception to this practice. Among the thousands of epigraphs found all over Tamil Nadu, a large number are composed in chaste Sanskrit and these as well as the Sanskrit portions of the bi-lingual copper-plate records serve as an important source of data about the conditions which existed in the ancient Tamil country. These Sanskrit inscriptions are also excellent pieces of prose and poetry and reveal the high standard which this language had attained in the ancient past in the Tamil country. This is a comprehensive and interesting work dealing with the Sanskrit inscriptions of ancient Tamil Nadu belonging to the period of the Pallavas, Pandyas and Colas and their vassals. It focuses attention on aspects of civil and military administration, social and economic life, education, literature and also the religious and cultural conditions of those ages. These inscriptions serve to highlight the cultural richness which Tamil Nadu enjoyed specially under the Pallavas, Pandyas and Colas. This book is a valuable contribution to the field of epigraphy and to the history of Tamil Nadu.Printed Pages:324. 100365

History and Culture of Tamil Nadu: As Gleaned from the Sanskrit Inscriptions, Volume 2
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8124603952; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Epigraphy, or the study of inscriptions, has played a very important role in reconstructing the history of India. Tamil Nadu in particular has a very large number of epigraphs, which have been of immense help to historians in writing about the history of the Tamil country. The majority of these inscriptions are written in Tamil. However, beginning from the sixth century ad, a large number of inscriptions, both lithic and copper-plate grants came to be composed in Sanskrit as well. Some of these epigraphs are wholly in Sanskrit while some, especially the copper-plate inscriptions, are bi-lingual, with the first or prashasti portion in chaste Sanskrit and the second or operative part of the record being in Tamil. While volume I dealt, in detail, with the Sanskrit inscriptions belonging to the Pallavas, Pandyas, Colas and their feudatories up to c. 1310 ad, this book deals with the Sanskrit inscriptions of the period of the Vijayanagara, Nayaka, Later Pandya and Maratha kings who ruled over Tamil Nadu. These Sanskrit records provide interesting and valuable details regarding civil and military administration, social and economic life, education, literature and the religious and cultural conditions of those times and have been very well presented in this work. This book is an important contribution not only to the field of epigraphy, but to the history of South India in general and the history of Tamil Nadu in particular.Printed Pages: 215. 100366
