Medical Interpreting and Cross-cultural Communication
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521830265; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 228 x 152 Mm
When healthcare providers and patients do not speak the same language, medical interpreters are called in to help. In this book - the first ever ethnographic study of a bilingual hospital - Claudia Angelelli explores the role of medical interpreters, drawing on data from over 300 medical encounters and interviewing the interpreters themselves about the people for whom they interpret, their challenges, and how they characterize their role. Traditionally the interpreter has been viewed as a language conduit, with little power over the medical encounter or the relationship between patient and provider. This book presents an alternative view, considering the interpreter’s agency and contextualizing the practice within an institution that is part of a larger society. Bringing together literature from social theory, social psychology, and linguistic anthropology, this book will be welcomed by anyone who wants to discover the intricacies of medical interpreting first-hand; particularly researchers, communication specialists, policy makers, and practitioners. • The first ever ethnographic study of a bilingual hospital • Includes data from over 300 medical encounters • Includes Spanish and English translations of interviews on medical interpreting Contents 1. Questioning invisibility; 2. Communication in a medical encounter; 3. A different set of lenses; 4. California hope: a public hospital in changing times; 5. Putting it all together; 6. Finding visibility; 7. Interpreters’ voices; 8. Emerging metaphors and final words. Printed Pages: 168 with 8 tables and 8 figures. 012779

The Bejewelled Buddha: From India to Burma. New Considerations
Sanctum Books; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8190995006; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
This book represents a comprehensive study of 'The Bejewelled Buddha' considering stylistic as well as iconographic issues. A crucial moment in the Buddha's life seems to have been referred to through this image, namely, the sojourn on Mount Meru, where the Buddha sat on Indra's seat and taught all the gods. By occupying the seat of the king of the gods he was able to endorse the royal function of this deity; this becomes particularly evident in the late fifth century, and probably reflects the dramatic situation that the Buddhist community was confronted with, i.e. the political power essentially fostering the Hindu religion and social structure. Hence, the Buddha is depicted as a perfect and powerful ruler sitting at the top of the universe and showing himself adorned as a king; more than any human ruler, the Buddha rules over the universe. There is also another dimension that should never be neglected - as in any other Indian cult, worship of his image entailed offerings of various kinds, such as flower garlands or jewels, being made to the Buddha. The image of the Bejewelled Buddha thus included various constituents while at the same time it was used as the locus where different religious or political concepts found a way of expression. The result was the creation of an image of multi-layered significance which found its way into all Asian cultures. Printed Pages: 206 with numerous b/w illustrations. 033982

Hira Mandi
IndiaInk/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8186939547; Softcover; New;
Very few French writers have ventured to write on the social, religious, political and cultural issues of Pakistani society, but Claudine is an exception. She is one of those writers who not only made frequent visits to Pakistan but also watched some very sensitive prevailing issues from a close angle. Her fine sensibilities and eye for detail is a hallmark of her writing skills which also makes her an accomplished writer. In Hira Mandi her strong pen has beautifully succeeded in capturing the true identity of the society. Hira Mandi is a remarkable piece where Claudine has rolled out a tale that would make the readers spellbound. Hira Mandi sounds a forbidden subject for many who are familiar with the name as it is an area located in the walled city of Lahore which in its hey days was notoriously known as pleasure seekers' paradise but Claudine's expressions, portrayal of feelings and glaring social dichotomies are unparallel. Birds of Paradise: Paradisaeidae
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 1998; 0198548532; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
`'The first comprehensive overview of this dramatic group of birds...' BBC Wildlife `'...an exhaustive summary of literally everything known about all 42 birds of paradise...I must also comment onf Frith and Beehler's organizational skill, from which any would-be author could learn. Masses of details are renedered digestible...Questions for future research are highlighted throughout, making this book another treasure trove for studnet sin search of PhD theseis topics.' Jared Diamond Nature `'...this book will stimulate interest in the habits and conservation of these magnificent birds and the paradise in which they live.'' World Birdwatch Birds of paradise have long played a central role in the mythologies, ceremonies, dress and dance of the peoples of New Guinea and its neighbouring islands. For the few centuries that these magnificent birds have been known outside of Australasia, their striking nuptial plumages and elaborate courtship rituals have captured the imagination of collectors, scientists, and naturalists throughout the world. The first part of the book provides a comprehensive and scientifically accurate overview of the biology, ecology, and history of the group, written so as to be interesting and accessible to the lay-reader as well as the scientist. The authors' intimate observations of the birds have enabled them to describe for the first time how the extravagant tails and plumage are used in courtship and mating as well as to describe their nesting biology, about which little has been written previously. The role of the birds of paradise in human culture and tradition is explored in chapter 7, and a final chapter discusses issues of conservation and threats to the survival of these unique and beautiful birds. The second part of the book consists of species accounts of the 42 species of birds of paradise, describing their plumage, size, habitat, distribution, and behaviour in detail and accompanied by distribution maps and sonograms. 12 superb colour plates by William T. Cooper, one of the world's most acclaimed bird artists, illustrate all the species, their known hybrids, and many juveniles and sub-species. His original fine line provide a vivid record of how the birds use their famous ornaments during reproductive behaviour. As with the other books in the Oxford Bird Families of the World series, the Birds of Paradise is written by authors who have dedicated much of their professional lives to researching the birds and observing them at first hand. It includes previously unpublished material and provides a synthesis of the huge literature that has been published over the last few years. As such it will be the most comprehensive review ever to be published on the birds of paradise, the most ornate and interesting group of birds on earth. Nothing comparable exists in print. The Later Ghaznavids: Splendour and Decay. The Dynasty in Afghanistan and Northern India 1040-1186
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121505771; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is a sequel to Prof. Bosworth's classic study of the origins and early history of the Ghaznavid Empire, The Ghaznavids, their empire in Afghanistan and eastern Iran 994-1040. It carries o the story of this originally Turkish dynasty, based on Ghazna in eastern Afghanistan, after its sultans had lost the western Iranian provinces of their empire to the incoming Turkish steppe nomads of the Oghuz tribe, whose leaders then formed the Great Seljuq state in the Middle East. The Ghaznavids survived, however, as a still-powerful empire, comprising eastern Afghanistan, the Panjab, Baluchistan and Sind, for almost a century and a half. Their court in Ghazna and then, at a later date, in Lahore, was a great centre for the beginnings and the development of what was to be the Indo-Muslim culture and literature, for it was from the Panjab at this time that the gradual process of the Islamisation of much of northwestern India began. The Ghaznavids: Their Empire in Afghanistan and Eastern Iran 994-1040
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121505739; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book deals with the origins and early history of the dynasty of Turkish slave origin which in the first half of the eleventh century AD, became a mighty power controlling lands from western Persia to the Panjab and from what is now the northern Uzbekistan Republic to the shores of the Indian Ocean in Baluchistan and Sind. The book is based on the original Persian and Arabic sources for the period, and describes the process by which, from a Turkish steppe background, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna and his son Mas'ud assembled by force of arms the most powerful empire known in the Islamic world since the disintegration of the Baghdad caliphate. Much of the Sultans' energy was devoted to the exploitation of India, with its rich temple treasures and reserves of slave manpower, and Mahmud in particular achieved a great contemporary reputation as a hammer of pagans and heretics, before the attacks of a new wave of Turkish invaders from Central Asia, the Ozhuz, overran the western provinces of their empire by 1040. Jataka Tales: Stories of moral conduct and good Behaviour
Unicorn Books; New Delhi, India; 8178060884; Softcover; New;
Jataka Tales are often short narratives which tell the stories of the lives of the Buddha before he reached Enlightenment. When, in the process of meditating beneath the Bodhi Tree, the cure for life`s suffering was revealed to him. Before reaching his last life as the Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha lived 550 successive lives in which he behaved justly and generously, accumulating merit during each life, until finally reaching Enlightenment. In some of his lives he is born as human, while in others he is an animal, such as a deer a monkey or an elephant. The Buddha himself used the Jataka stories to explain concepts like karma and rebirth and to emphasise the importance of certain moral values. The story of each of these earlier lives, like a fable, is meant to convey the lessons of moral behaviour. Printed Pages: 95. 108172

From My Bones: Memoirs of Col. G.S. Dhillon of the Indian National Army (Including 1945 Red Fort Trial)
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8173051488; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
A historian's perspective of an event differs from the more intimate subjective view of a participant in the event. In the present book, Col. Dhillon, who today is the only survivor of the historic Red Fort trial of 1945 records his experiences that contributed so signally to India's Independence. Col. Dhillon was one of the three accused of the famous INA trial that began on November 5, 1945 at Red Fort and was charged with "waging war against His Majesty the King-Emperor..." The trial marked a significant turning point in India's struggle for Independence and Col. Dhillon along with his two colleagues became symbol of India fighting for freedom. In the present volume, Col. Dhillon narrates his experiences of INA and the nostalgic memories of the trial. The story narrated in the book is not the history of INA. The narrative is of the events which concerned the author or were to his knowledge in connection with his duties and status in the movement. It is more like a historical account of his actions. Jaina Studies: Papers of the 12th World Sanskrit Conference Held in Helsinki, Finland, 13-18 July, 2003: Vol. 9
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120832477; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Interest for Jain studies has increased considerably in the last decades. Scholars will be thankful to the organizers of the 12th World Sanskrit Conference who, for the first time in such a conference, planned a special panel on this field. The ten papers collected in this volume show the importance, abundance and variety of topics that can be considered. Philological analysis still proves useful, whether it concentrates on one particular work or on clusters of texts. A study of the "strategy of narrative" and predication needs a historical approach, kavya literature lends itself to renewed and indepth interpretations. Finally the reader will observe the constant renewal of Jainism, as some new "literary genre" or a new sect are seen to have gained momentum in modern times. Printed Pages: 304. 029431

The Forging of Races: Race and Scripture in the Protestant Atlantic World, 1600-2000
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0521793246; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
This book revolutionises our understanding of race. Building upon the insight that races are products of culture rather than biology, Colin Kidd demonstrates that the Bible - the key text in Western culture - has left a vivid imprint on modern racial theories and prejudices. Fixing his attention on the changing relationship between race and theology in the Protestant Atlantic world between 1600 and 2000 Kidd shows that, while the Bible itself is colour-blind, its interpreters have imported racial significance into the scriptures. Kidd's study probes the theological anxieties which lurked behind the confident facade of of white racial supremacy in the age of empire and race slavery, as well as the ways in which racialist ideas left their mark upon new forms of religiosity. This is essential reading for anyone interested in the histories of race or religion. • An innovative and controversial survey of the relationship of race and theology over the past four centuries • Describes the religious underpinnings of modern racism • A major contribution to Atlantic history, intellectual history and religious studies Contents 1. Prologue: race in the eye of the beholder; 2. Introduction: race as scripture problem; 3. Race and religious orthodoxy in the early modern era; 4. Race, the Enlightenment and the authority of scripture; 5. Monogenesis, slavery and the nineteenth-century crisis of faith; 6. The Aryan moment: racializing religion in the nineteenth century; 7. Forms of racialized religion; 8. Black counter-theologies; 9. Conclusion. Printed Pages: 318. 018588

National Security Dilemmas: Challenges and Opportunities
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8190848771; Hardcover; New; New;
A contemporary primer on the leading arguments about U.S. national security, National Security Dilemmas addresses the major challenges and opportunities that are live-issue areas for American policymakers and strategists today. Colin S. Gray provides an in-depth analysis of a policy and strategy for deterrence; the long-term U.S. bid to transform its armed forces’ capabilities, with particular reference to strategic surprise, in the face of many great uncertainties; the difficulty of understanding and exploiting the challenge of revolutionary change in warfare; the problems posed by enemies who fight using irregular methods; and the awesome dilemmas for U.S. policy over the options to wage preventive and preemptive warfare.With forty years’ experience as a strategist, within and outside of government, Gray uses a problem-solving motif throughout the book, suggesting solutions to the challenges he identifies. The book’s master narrative is that the United States must take a more considered strategic approach to its security dilemmas. Too often, the country’s leaders decide on a policy and then move to take action, all the while neglecting to devise a plan that would connect its political purposes to military means. While many of Gray’s judgments here are critical of current ideas and behavior, he crafted them as helpful guides should planners adopt them when revising policies and approaches. Strategy is a practical matter; truly it is the zone wherein theory meets practice. This text can be used as an expert guide to the major national security challenges of today. It both explains the structure of these challenges and provides useful answers. With a foreword by Lt. Gen. Paul K. Van Riper, USMC (Ret.), Bren Chair, Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia.Printed Pages: 334. 103253

Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120812816; Hardcover; New; New;
One of the major difficulties in appreciating the various commentaries on Vedanta Sutras and other ancient Indian philosophical texts is that numerous citations from the Upanishads and the Bhagavadgita are found in them without any exact authenticated reference to the original source. With a view to overcoming this difficulty by providing relevant cross-references, as also to furnishing useful material to students of philology and lexicography, Col. Jacob has compiled this book. Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8174364315; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
‘Anhonee ko honee karna hamara kaam hai’ (Making the impossible possible is our job). The line leading into the title song of the blockbuster Amar Akbar Anthony sums up the magic of Manmohan Desai, the master entertainer whose desire to please his public made his name synonymous with success during much of his career in popular Hindi Cinema from 1960 to 1988. In Enchantment of the Mind: Manmohan Desai’s Films, Connie Haham delves into the director’s works and analyses some of his cinematic signatures-speed, fun, adventure and delight, alongside a devotion to motherhood and a stance in favour of inter-religious harmony. His cinema is fondly remembered for its many catchy tunes and for characters brought to life by leading stars from Raj Kapoor to Amitabh Bachchan. Lending extra magic to this book is Manmohan Desai’s own account of a life dedicated to cinema- a medium he wielded artfully to depict both struggle and an affirmation of life. Erasmus, Contarini, and the Religious Republic of Letters
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2005; 052184987X; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
Though the paradigm of modernist progression has been challenged on many fronts, Erasmus and other sixteenth-century figures are still commonly viewed as people who led the transition from a religious Middle Ages to a more godless modern era. Erasmus, Contarini and the Religious Republic of Letters complicates this transition by analyzing a unique realm of spiritualized scholarship that cannot fit easily into any conventional intellectual chronology. By analyzing the lives, work, and correspondence of Erasmus, Thomas More, Margaret More Roper, Reginald Pole, Gasparo Contarini, and Vittoria Colonna, this book demonstrates how these Catholic men and women of letters created a distinctive kind of religious community rooted in friendship and spiritualized scholarship. By spanning the too frequently respected gap between humanist reformers in northern and southern Europe, the book uncovers a widespread, if previously less visible, network that exhibited concerns we still grapple with today. • Counters secularization thesis by showing how Catholic intellectuals created a new kind of religious community rooted in friendship and spiritualized scholarship • Provides alternative to current claims about gender in the Renaissance by using sources by women alongside those by men • Contributes to the history of reading by showing that for leading Catholic men and women of letters, even non-devotional scholarship was imbued with religious significance Contents 1. A new kind of religious life; 2. Creating an alternative community: spiritual values and the search for meaning; 3. The spiritual quest: reading and writing about God and salvation; 4. Necessary relationships: desire for God and each other; 5. Defining the ideal: words of praise for fools and bishops, women and martyrs; 6. Epilogue. Printed Pages: 270 with 1 half-tone. 018628

Doing Style: Youth and Mass Mediation in South India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8125063013; Hardcover; New; New;
In Doing Style, Constantine V. Nakassis explores the world of youth and mass media in South India. Through ethnographic descriptions of college life in urban Tamil Nadu, Nakassis examines what Tamil youth call “style”: the display of ostentatious brand fashion, speaking in cosmopolitan English, or acting out bombastic film heroism, among other kinds of acts. As Nakassis shows, acts of “doing style” express the ambivalent desires and anxieties of these youth who live in the shadows of global modernity. This ambivalence is reflected in the conflicted ways that youth do style. Among youth, what appear are not authentic but fake branded garments, not fluent English but English-peppered Tamil, and not imitations of film heroes but ironical and playful citations.Doing Style also explores the connections among youth peer groups and the sites where such stylish objects are produced: textile workshops, music-television channels, and the Tamil film industry. Nakassis shows how these connections deeply condition the production and circulation of these media. They inscribe youth style on these media, materializing as fashionable garments, on-air speech styles, and film texts that anticipate and give form to youth’s ambivalent acts of style.Doing Style presents an important and timely look at contemporary youth culture, globalization, and mass media as they interact in a vibrant and rapidly changing India. This book will appeal to socio-cultural anthropologists, sociolinguists, and scholars of media and cultural studies. Printed Pages: 336. 110982
