Reforming China's Government: Fixing the Worst Government in the World
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380177359; Hardcover; New; New;
When Mao Zedong came to power in 1949, he created what was arguably "the worst government in the world" - vicious, misguided, and unbelievably wasteful and destructive. After Mao's death in 1976 his successors began national recovery and government reform. The theology of Communist command/control was abandoned, replaced by a highly successful ... See Moremarket based economy. This book describes the strategies for economic development, government reform, revitalization of the People's Liberation Army, and the rising tide of urban expansion. But it also documents deliberate and continuing government neglect of education, health care, massive environmental problems and the serious plight of farmers, villages and urban slums.Printed Pages: 328. 103219

Principles of Conflict Economics: A Primer for Social Scientists
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2009; 0521698650; First Edition; Paperback; New; 150 x 225 Mm
Conflict economics contributes to an understanding of violent conflict in two important ways. First, it applies economic analysis to diverse conflict activities such as war, arms races, and terrorism, showing how they can be understood as purposeful choices responsive to underlying incentives. Second, it treats appropriation as a fundamental economic activity, joining production and exchange as a means of wealth acquisition. Drawing on a half-century of scholarship, this book presents a primer on the key themes and principles of conflict economics. Although much work in the field is abstract, the book is made accessible to a broad audience of scholars, students, and policymakers by relying on historical data, relatively simple graphs, and intuitive narratives. In exploring the interdependence of economics and conflict, the book presents current perspectives of conflict economics in novel ways and offers new insights into economic aspects of violence. Contents 1. Introduction: definition and scope of conflict economics 2. Production possibilities and the guns versus butter tradeoff 3. Rational choice and equilibrium 4. Fundamentals of game theory 5. A bargaining model of conflict 6. Conflict between states 7. Civil war and genocide 8. Terrorism 9. Geography and technology of conflict. 10. Arms rivalry, proliferation, and arms control 11. Military alliances 12. Conflict success functions and the theory of appropriation possibilities Appendix A. Statistical methods Appendix B. A more formal bargaining model of conflict. Printed Pages: 343 with 115 line figures and 17 tables. 027778

Gods of Management: The Changing World of Organisations
Penguin Portfolio; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143102850; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
‘It was always a myth that there is one best way to manage, but it has been a pervasive myth and a damaging one, to both individuals and organizations. The Greeks at least recognized a variety of gods, even if each had his or her favourite. We need a law of requisite variety in management as well as a theory of cultural propriety.’ The four gods of the title symbolize the very different styles of management and culture to be found in today’s organizations. Zeus is the dynamic entrepreneur who rules over companies of the club cluture, characterized by speed of decision and rapid, intuitive communication. Apollo, god of order and bureaucracy, is the patron of the role culture, based not on personalities but on definition of the jobs to be done. Athena, goddess of craftsmen, recognized only expertise as the basis of power and influence: hers is the task culture. Dionysus is the god preferred by artists and professionals within the existential culture, people who owe little or no allegiance to a boss. Under this witty and sparkling allegory, Charles Handy, Britain’s foremost business guru, makes a serious analysis of the changing patterns of work and business. Gods of Management is a world bestseller which is required reading for managers, business students and everyone who wants to be a survivor on a world of constantly changing organizational culture. Economics of the Goa Jesuits 1542-1759: An Explanation of Their Rise and Fall
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8170225051; Hardcover; New; New;
1542: Francis Xavier and his band of Jesuits arrived in Goa with the financial and moral backing of the Portuguese empire. 1759: a little over two hundred years later, the Jesuits returned home in disgrace, penniless and as unsung criminals. How did the scene change. How did the well-organized Society of Jesus collapse so helplessly to government orders. The present work has sought to trace the growth and collapse of the Jesuits of Goa during their stay in India. The emphasis is on the economic aspects, on the means they used to gather resources, the extent of them, and the use they put them to. The hunt for financial resources, although overseen with caution from their constitutional and spiritual writings, brought them into involvements and alliances with many, and made them the victims of the objections and hatred of other. The Economics of the Goa Jesuits, 1542-1759 it is hoped, will delineate adequately the lives and times of men suppressed world-wide between 1759-1773, and restored again in 1814. Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Arts and Industry of All Nations, 2 Vols
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8173050317; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 37 x 27 Cm
Art is the practical application of knowledge to the production all things whatever that can administer to the uses of man : To the humblest necessities of the body, to the highest gratifications of the mind. The word art, then, is all-comprehensive. The elder writers, especially, make no distinctions in the application of the word art and arts. This illustrated encyclopaedia attempts to distinguish between and artist, and an artificer, or an artisan. With this wide range of the term arts, an exhibition that contains everything relating to art will be a world in little : And yet, if such an exhibition were possible, what an important and interesting study would it afford. This work has been divided into two distinct volumes. The first volume is devoted to what we have been accustomed to call the Useful arts. This includes all the processes and products that have relation to our daily sustenance. The second volume on Fine arts displays pictorial representations of Architecture, sculpture and Painting : Ancient and Modern : And depicts a familiarity with the beautiful Sculptures of antiquity, with the noble paintings of the great modern schools and the glorious monuments of Grecian and middle-age architecture. The union of all the art has essentially been kept in mind. These volumes are "a School of Design" of no inconsiderable value by this union of the useful and the ornamental. This encyclopaedia is the most complete Polytechnicon ever opened for public instruction and amusement. A glance at the list of contents (given in the back flap) will show how wide is the survey and how great the feast of intellectual pleasure. Illustrated with as many as 4000 sketches, this monumental work will prove an invaluable asset to the art lovers.Printed Pages: 848. 100269

The Surangama Sutra: (Leng Yen Ching)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8121510023; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Surangama Sutra, or Leng Yen Ching, is a Buddhist apocalyptic text, which, alongwith an abridged commentary by Ch'an Master Han Shan, has ably been translated from Chinese into English by Charles Luk, Containing apocalyptic thinking. It is asserted that this sutra will dissapear upon the disappearance of the dharma. The basic concern of the text is to point out as to how the law of casuality terminates in the emergence of delusion, and on account of delusion samsaric bondage is given rise to. The only way to overcome delusion, and thereby bondage, is to attain the state of enlightenment. Since the attainment of enlightenment is seen as the solution of the problem, the text, thus, engages in laying down the road map of specific practices that enable one to reach the liberative goal of salvation, which is freedom from the law of casuality, and thereby from delusion and bondage. Insofar as the store consciousness (alaya) continues to function, to that extent casuality will remain operative. The methods, as developed in the text, are thus aimed at breaking the alaya. Upon the destruction of three marks of the alaya, which are self-evidencing, perception and form, the practitioner attains what is called the Surangama samadhi, or the gateway to Perfect Enlightenment. Upon the attainment of Enlightenment is revealed the nature of Tathagata store of One Reality. Printed Pages: 286. 032452

Introduction to Probability (Second Edition)
Universities Press; Hyderabad, India; 2009; 0821848577; Second Edition; Paperback; New;
This text is designed for an introductory probability course at the university level for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in mathematics, physical and social sciences, engineering, and computer science. It presents a thorough treatment of ideas and techniques necessary for a firm understanding of the subject. The text is also recommended for use in discrete probability courses. The material is organized so that the discrete and continuous probability discussions are presented in a separate, but parallel, manner. This organization does not emphasize an overly rigorous or formal view of probability and therefore offers some strong pedagogical value. Hence, the discrete discussions can sometimes serve to motivate the more abstract continuous probability discussions. Features: Key ideas are developed in a somewhat leisurely style, providing a variety of interesting applications to probability and showing some nonintuitive ideas. Over 600 exercises provide the opportunity for practicing skills and developing a sound understanding of ideas. Numerous historical comments deal with the development of discrete probability. The Price of Peace: Just War in the Twenty-first Century
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0521677858; First Edition; Paperback; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
Lively political and public debates on war and morality have been a feature of the post-Cold War world. The Price of Peace argues that a re-examination of the just war tradition is therefore required. The authors suggest that despite fluctuations and transformations in international politics, the just war tradition continues to be relevant. However they argue that it needs to be reworked to respond to the new challenges to international security represented by the end of the Cold War and the impact of terrorism. With an interdisciplinary and transatlantic approach, this volume provides a dialogue between theological, political, military and public actors. By articulating what a reconstituted just war tradition might mean in practice, it also aims to assist policy-makers and citizens in dealing with the ethical dilemmas of war. • An accessible examination of what the notion of a 'just war' means in the modern world, in the context of mass terrorism, rogue states and the Iraq War • A distinguished group of academics (politics, philosophy and theology), and practitioners (soldiers, church people, civil servants, lawyers) provide a major statement on the moral status of war • Will interest an academic audience but also those from religious communities, the military and policy-makers interested in foreign policy and defence issues Contents Foreword Richard Dannatt; 1. Introduction Charles Reed and David Ryall; Part I. A Framework for Ethical Decision Making: State and Civil Society-Based Approaches: 2. Buddhist Monastic Discipline: The Sanskrit Pratimoksa Sutras of the Mahasamghikas and Mulasarvastivadins
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120813391; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
Buddhist Monastic Discipline contains two significant Buddhist monastic disciplinary texts-the Sanskrit Pratimoksa Sutras of the Mahasamghikas and Mulasarvastivadins-for the first time, translated into English. They are printed on facing pages for ease of comparison. One of the texts is that of a very early Buddhist school first appearing in the 4th century BCE, and the other is one not mentioned in the records until the 7th century CE. The contrasting texts thus highlight the development of Buddhist sectarian practices. Two introductory chapters precede the translated Sutras. The first gives an overview of the rise of Buddhist monasticism; analyzes Vinaya, that portion of the Buddhist canon regulating the life of monks and nuns; and proisionally identifies the problematics inherent in Pratimoksa study, pointing the way to needed research. The second chapter describes how the two translated Sutras were found and edited.Printed Pages: 156. 102347

A Theology of Public Life
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521832268; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
What has Washington to do with Jerusalem? In the raging debates about the relationship between religion and politics, no one has explored the religious benefits and challenges of public engagement for Christian believers - until now. This ground-breaking book defends and details Christian believers' engagement in contemporary pluralistic public life not from the perspective of some neutral ‘public’, but from the particular perspective of Christian faith, arguing that such engagement enriches both public life and Christian citizens' faith themselves. As such it offers not a ‘public theology’, but a ‘theology of public life’, analyzing the promise and perils of Christian public engagement, discussing the nature of civic commitment and prophetic critique, and the relation of a loving faith to a liberal politics of justice. Theologically rich, philosophically rigorous, politically, historically and sociologically informed, this book advances contemporary discussion of ‘religion and public life’ in fundamental ways. • Introduces readers to relevant conversations in the fields of philosophy, political science, history, and sociology • Builds on the last few decades' revisionist appreciation of the thought of Augustine • Advances contemporary discussions of 'religion and public life' in fundamental ways Contents Introduction: life in the epilogue, during the world; Part I. A Theology of Engagement: Introduction; 1. Life before God; 2. Life in the world; 3. Life together; Part II. The Liturgy of Citizenship: Introduction; 4. Faithful citizenship; 5. Hopeful citizenship; 6. Charitable citizenship; Conclusion: The republic of grace; or, the public ramifications of heaven. Printed Pages: 400. 018639

Continental Church Furniture in England: A Traffic in Piety
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 185149376X; Hard Cover; New; New; 22 Cms x 29 Cms
This is the first book on the history of the virtually unknown phenomenon of the importation of Continental church furniture into England since the early 19th century. Lavishly illustrated, well over one hundred pieces, from pulpits to choir stalls, are discussed in detail. The taste for this furniture was fuelled by the Romantic medievalising enthusiasm of Augustus Welby Pugin and the Catholic Revival, as well as the eccentric whims of the Anglican Squiresons. It was clandestinely acquired mainly from France and the Low Countries by English antique dealers and other enterprising agents, including architects and the aristocracy, as a result of the catastrophic upheavals of the French Revolution. Surprisingly, much of the furniture is in the Baroque style. The historical setting for this nostalgic explosion is described, as well as an account of some of the more unusual patronage, and the story is pursued into the 20th century. The second half of the book comprises a discussion of the most important specimens in the national collection, and their provenance, as well as a gazetteer of such material throughout England. The Author Charles Tracy completed his Ph.D. thesis at the Courtauld Institute on English Gothic choir-stalls. Since then he has extensively researched the largely ignored subject of English medieval church furniture and woodwork. He is the author of the two volume study, English Gothic Choir-Stalls, 1200-1540, and the Catalogue of English Medieval Furniture and Woodwork for the V & A Museum. In addition he has published many articles in learned journals on related topics, from the Watching Chamber at St. Alban’s Cathedral to the early 14th century painted screen at Kingston Lacy, Dorset. His interest in Continental church furniture of all periods goes back over ten years and he has made a particular study of the material in Belgium and France. * The first book ever to be published on this subject * Over 350 superb black and white illustrations and 20 colour photographs * The result of ten years’ research, written by a leading authority on church furniture * Will be of interest to furniture and art historians, museums, libraries, Puginians and students of the English Catholic Revival Printed Pages: 300 with 20 colour and 350 b/w illustrations. 017874

Islam and the Moral Economy: The Challenge of Capitalism
Cambridge University Press; New Delhi, India; 2006; 0521863775; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
How do modern Muslims adapt their traditions to engage with today's world? Charles Tripp's erudite and incisive book considers one of the most significant challenges faced by Muslims over the last sixty years: the challenge of capitalism. By reference to the works of noted Muslim scholars, the author shows how, faced by this challenge, these intellectuals devised a range of strategies which have enabled Muslims to remain true to their faith, whilst engaging effectively with a world not of their own making. The work is framed around the development of their ideas on Islamic socialism, economics and the rationale for Islamic banking. While some Muslims have resorted to confrontation or insularity to cope with the challenges of modernity, most have aspired to innovation and ingenuity in the search for compromise and interaction with global capitalism in the twenty-first century. • Sophisticated treatment of the diverse Muslim views of capitalism • Written by a highly regarded political scientist and scholar of the Middle East • A book for policymakers, journalists, professionals, students, all those looking for a clearer and more in-depth study of Islam and its interaction with the West Contents 1. The 'social problem'; 2. Islamic social critics; 3. Islamic socialism; 4. Islamic economics and Islamic banks; 5. Repertoires of resistance: Islamic anti-capitalism; Conclusion; Bibliography. The Inner Life
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178223163; Softcover; New;
The talks which comprise this book, The Inner Life were given to students of Leadbeater and Annie Besant, his close associate and fellow clairvoyant. Leadbeater assumed that his audience was thoroughly familiar with his enlarged world view. In this new edition it seems necessary to sketch out some of the main features of this view, to make the book easily comprehensible. This expanded world view did not originate with Leadbeater, though he filled in many details previously left blank. His scheme fits into a venerable tradition which has been with mankind since prehistoric times. History shows a kernel of truth appearing through the ages, sometimes taught openly and dominating a culture, as in ancient Greece, at other times taught in secret to the few who sought. The principles have been styled quite differently and various aspects have been emphasized at different times, but the fundamentals have remained unchanged throughout the centuries. This core of understanding is variously known today as the ancient wisdom, the occult philosophy, the esoteric tradition theosophy.Printed Pages: 410. 102242

Paths to Asian Medical Knowledge
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121506085; First Indian Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The present work is guided by two central ideas: that medical traditions are based on coherent forms of practice and belief about illnesses, and that these systems are embedded in the symbols and world views that characterize the historical differences between civilizations. These new essays by leading scholars from Europe and North America focus on issues in the humoral and biomedical traditions of several Asian countries. How do patients and practitioners know what they know? What kinds and categories of information constitute evidence about pathological processes? What reasoning do they find persuasive, and under what circumstances? From the perspectives of history and cultural anthropology, the authors consider problems of knowledge in Chinese medicine, the Hindu-Buddhist traditions of South Asian medicine, and the Greco-Arabic traditions of Islamic medicine. Whether discussing Japanese anatomy texts or popular culture, Chinese case histories or burial practices, Islamic humoralism or clinical reasoning, in Ayurveda, the essays in Paths to Asian Medical Knowledge are richly documented, interesting to read, and suggest new theoretical avenues for medical anthropology. Networks, Interaction and Emerging Identities in Fennoscandia and Beyond
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2012; 9525667391; New;
This volume is a collection of articles based on papers that were presented at the conference iNetworks, Interaction and Emerging Identities in Fennoscandia and Beyond/i, 13?16 October 2009. The articles span a wide range of themes from vast networks of culture to the distribution of individual archaeological types and linguistic features. Many of the papers are based on material that derives from several different fields of study, such as linguistic and archaeology, archaeology and ethnohistory, history and anthropology, etc. While the time-scale, disciplinary character as well as the geographical scope of the articles are very diverse, they are united by three aspects, namely insistence on the fluctuating character of the prehistoric populations as opposed to nominal groups and straightforwardly identifiable ethnic and linguistic entities; the focus on the hunter-fisher-gatherer populations rather than agriculturalists and sedentary communities that have been the subject of most research on networking and interaction; and finally the northern dimension.
