Buddhist Monuments of Sirpur
Buddhist World Press/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789380852409; Hardcover; New; New;
The book deals about the Buddhist monuments unearthed from excavations at Sirpur. So far ten Buddhist monasteries have been exposed which include from the simple one to lavishly caved double story structures indicating that right from 6th century A.D. onwards Sirpur had a rich Buddhist culture flourishing alongwith Jaina and Brahmanical cultures. It is clear that Sirpur was a great educational centre where students from even south-eastern countries studied Buddhism. Most of the Viharas got financial grants from the rulers who were Hindus. Gandhian Philosophy of Voluntarism: A Comparative Study of Development in the Ashram Villages and Outside
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351250760; Hardcover; New; New;
The role of voluntary organizations (VDOs) cannot be overestimated in the field of rural development. However, they fall under different categories — some work purely as professional organizations and some as missions. The Banwasi Seva Ashram (BSA) belongs to the latter category and is one of the most known of the Gandhian Organizations. Set up in 1954 in the tribal region of Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, the Ashram has worked for the last six decades to transform the tribal villages. Its activities are based on Gandhian principles of Swaraj and Sarvodaya. The aim of the Ashram is to develop rural areas through the efforts of a dedicated leadership, cooperation and voluntarism. This book explores and evaluates the work done by the Banwasi Seva Ashram. It particularly focuses on the recent challenges before the Ashram and its limitations. It also provides some alternatives for Gandhian voluntary action in the future. Printed Pages: 176. 112514

Feminist Politics and Human Nature
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8175333294; Softcover; New;
Feminism is both an intellectual commitment and a political movement that seeks justice for women and the end of sexism in all forms. However, there are many different kinds of feminism. Feminists disagree about what sexism consists in, and what exactly ought to be done about it; they disagree about what it means to be a woman or a man and what social and political implications gender has or should have. Nonetheless, motivated by the quest for social justice, feminist inquiry provides a wide range of perspectives on social, cultural, and political phenomena. Important topics for feminist theory and politics include: the body, class and work, disability, the family, globalization, human rights, popular culture, race and racism, reproduction, science, the self, sex work, and sexuality. The fallacy on which modern feminism is based is that men have more power than women. Among mammals, the female always has more power than the male, and humans are no exception. It is true that, in all human societies, men largely control all the money, politics, and prestige. They do, because they have to, in order to impress women. Women don?t control these resources, because they don?t have to. Printed Pages: 243. 117652

Gender and Digital Economy: Perspectives from Developing World
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8175333456; Softcover; New;
Much of the discussion about new technologies and social equality has focused on the oversimplified notion of a "digital divide." Technology and Social Inclusion moves beyond the limited view of haves and have-nots to analyze the different forms of access to information and communication technologies. Drawing on theory from political science, economics, sociology, psychology, communications, education, and linguistics, the book examines the ways in which differing access to technology contributes to social and economic stratification or inclusion. A central premise is that, in today's society, the ability to access, adapt, and create knowledge using information and communication technologies is critical to social inclusion. This focus on social inclusion shifts the discussion of the "digital divide" from gaps to be overcome by providing equipment to social development challenges to be addressed through the effective integration of technology into communities, institutions, and societies. Indian Buddhism
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120808185; Third Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
This book describes the Buddhism of India on the basis of the comparison of all the available original sources in various languages. It falls into three approximately equal parts. The first is a reconstruction of the original Buddhism presupposed by the traditions of the different schools known to us. It uses primarily the established methods of textual criticism, drawing out of the oldest extant texts of the different schools their common kernel. This kernel of doctrine is presumably common Buddhism of the period before the great schisms of the fourth and third centuries BC. It may be substantially the Buddhism of the Buddha himself, though this cannot be proved: at any rate it is a Buddhism presupposed by the schools as existing about a hundred years after the Parinirvana of the Buddha, and there is no evidence to suggest that it was formulated by anyone other than the Buddha and his immediate followers. The second part traces the development of the 'Eighteen Schools' of early Buddhism, showing how they elaborated their doctrines out of the common kernel. Here we can see to what extent the Sthaviravada, or 'Theravada' of the Pali tradition, among others, added to or modified the original doctrine. The third part describes the Mahayana movement and the Mantrayana, the way of the bodhisattva and the way of ritual. The relationship of the Mahayana to the early schools is traced in detail, with its probable affiliation to one of them, the Purva Saila, as suggested by the consensus of the evidence. Particular attention is paid in this book to the social teaching of Buddhism, the part which relates to the 'world' rather than to nirvana and which has been generally neglected in modern writings Buddhism.Printed Pages: 619. 102370

Indian Kavya Literature (Volume 1: Literary Criticism)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8120804465; Hardcover; New; New;
Indian Kavya Literature is planned in eight volumes as a comprehensive study of literature (kavya) in the literary criticism of that same tradition. Surprising as it may seem, Indian literature has not till now been presented from this obvious, natural and necessary point of view in any modern language, except in a limited and primarily bibliographical manner by Krishnamachariar in his history of Classical Sanskrit Literature (1937). Instead, Indian literature has been misrepresented and misjudged from a narrowly European, and therefore quite alien and unhelpful, standpoint in the modern works on it widely accepted as 'standard'. It is exceedingly odd that even several modern Indian writers have performed the feat of adopting this alienated and distant view, diminishing Indian culture in the midst of the struggle for Indian freedom from colonialism. The present work is intended to restore Indian literature to independence and to India, as a step towards that freedom from spiritual colonialism which India has yet to attain. But the method of presentation here involves no political discussions and is very simple and straightforward: the aim is the enjoyment of the literature as it was meant to be enjoyed. The first volume prepares the way for the enjoyment of Indian literature by presenting Indian literary criticism, thus clarifying the techniques and aims of Indian writers. This criticism includes the various aesthetic theories as to the nature of the enjoyment of literature by readers and audiences, the techniques of dramaturgy and poetics whereby this enjoyment is created, the nature of the literary genres (drama, epic, the novel, etc.) and a sketch of the milieu of the writers and critics.Printed Pages: 295. 102592

Indian Kavya Literature, Volume 7: The Wheel of Time (in 2 Parts)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8120820282; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries starts with Vidyakara`s retrospect over anonymous poets (named ones having mostly found their places in earlier volumes). After some smaller anthologies a few novels and Mankhaka`s mythological epic we come to a historical epic. History is the most substantial source of matter for literature in the volume. That might seem to contrast with Vol. Vi, but as literature its aim is always are, not facts which narrows the gap.Printed Pages: 1135. 102593

Indian Kavya Literature (Volume 8: The Performance of Kavya in the + 14)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8120834488; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Where kavya flourished, performance in the streets and in theatres also flourished. So theatre in Andhra and everywhere to the south, also in Orissa, Mithila and Nepala, flourished in the +14. In Andhra Rudra's Yayaticarita is the earliest extant play on that famousking. The Telugu translation of the Premabhirama gives us a substantial street play vithi describing scenes in the Kakatiya capital. Narasimha's Kadambari play has an improved ending. Agastya composed two epics from the Mahabharata and a biography from the Harivamsa. In Rajasthan Rayanasehara's novel has his hero given troupes of actors to perform for him whilst he is travelling. In Gurjara Jinaprabha's Kalpapradipa (completed in Yoginipattana = 'Dhilli') is a miserable history of sacrilege and Islamic terror. In Sarvananda's Jagaducarita the merchant foresaw a famine and stored enough grain to feed all western India plus Kasi. Princess Ganga composed the Sanskrit epic Madhuravijaya on her husband's slaying of the Turkish suratrana in Madurai, a decisive event in Vijayanagara (and Indian) history. Ahobala's campu is a comic satire matallika on a festival there. Venkatanatha's allegorical play is of interest only for some incidental details. In Kerala we have an anonymous bhana set in Mahodaya and Laksmidasa's long message poem Sukasandesa, which is just a dream he had about his wife Rangalaksmi (Apphulla). Purnasarasvati composed a strict sataka Hamsasandesa and an ecological play on a victory of birds over storms of the rainy season. Autumn then regulated the round of seasons. The actor Damodara composed a Sanskrit epic and Malayalam manipravala campu, both on the actress Unniyati. From Tirabhukti (Mithila) we have comedies by Jyotirisvara and adunandana. From Nepala there are several Sanskrit plays. In Balinese the Sutasoma is an enormous vajrayana work.Printed Pages: 433. 102594

The New Asian Women: Women's Magazine and Spread of Mass Culture
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8175332948; Hardcover; New; New;
Women's magazines play a variety of roles: they are forms of entertainment, sources of education and trade journals and historically are the precursors to today's Virtual Communities. The magazines allow for two-way communication between readers and writers, rather than the one-way communication of books. Women's magazines weren't always a medium for recycled, superficial news, nor were their readers always in the market for it. They used to be thoughtful, provoking, political and something completely different from what we pick up today. In the very early women's press, the contents were predominantly literature; with a lesser amount of personal advice. What distinguished women's magazines was the personal nature of the material. The roles of women's magazines, as educators, as virtual communities and as trade papers are interrelated. The areas that magazines choose to educate their readers in, and the elements that define the trade of housewife are aspects of the community created and represented by magazines. Women and Politics Worldwide
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 817533293X; Hardcover; New; New;
Despite the fact that women's interest in politics is increasing and that almost all political parties have promised higher female representation in politics, women's organizations mostly appear to believe that these developments will not end in women deputies. Women's representation in politics is not linked to whether a country is rich or poor. Compared to men, women still face numerous obstacles when entering politics. In spite of the fact that countries around the world have recognized the under-representation of women in politics and started to adopt measures to address the deficit, the world average proportion of women members of national - level legislatures stood at a mere 17 percent. To date, moreover elected women head only 13 of the world's 194 states and governments. Understanding that women's participation is central to democratic governance. International IDEA works to improve women's representation and participation in politics. Printed Pages: 220. 117715

Mainpur: The Glorious Past
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1994; 8173050503; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Survey of India a in general and Manipur in particular is a treasure house of archaeological wealth right from the beginning of civilization in the Indian sub-continent. Scanty archaeological investigations in the region, even after independence, resulted in formulation of faulty theories about the historical past of the area, based on the ideas propogated by the colonizers and on the basis of unreliable records. Explorations and excavations conducted by The Author on behalf of the Archaeological Survey of India in collaboration with the State Department of Archaeology, at Sekta in Manipur in 1991, had for the first time brought to light, apart from scores of sites, archaeological evidences of glorious past cultures of early historical period. Scientific results of the excavation, described in detail in this book, it is hoped, would be able to dispel many wrong notions and theories so that the past could be seen in correct perspective. Being the first detailed archaeological investigation in the area, it was received enthusiastically by the scholars, students and common people of Manipur. The present volume covers in detail the excavations and includes full analyses of the pottery, the metal work, the objects from the burials, the environmental evidence and all other finds. The profusion of duly annotated illustrations make the text more meaningful and illuminating. It is hoped this Book will be able to fill a part of the gap in the History of Manipur. Tibetan Folk Tales
Pilgrims Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8177692011; Reprint; Paperback; New; New; 5.5 x 8.5 Inches
Tibet a land of mystery and mysticism has for centuries hidden itself from the outside world. For this reason Tibetan folktales have always attracted a vast audience. Many of these tales steeped in mystical imagery give the fertile imagination plenty of scope to work. Garnered from wandering herdsmen of the trans-Himalayan regions of Tibet as they sat around their campfires at night these tales delve deep into the traditional psyche of the Tibetan people. Shelton has selected these stories very carefully so that they may reflect the true culture of the Tibetan people. The fifty stories contained in this book will fascinate and entertain you time and time again. Whether you are old or young you may relate to these tales and derive your own meanings for each one. As with all eastern tales Tibetab folk tales have deeper meanings that may not be immediately understood and thus one may ponder over each tale to look for a deeper and hidden meaning. As with the Jataka tales associated with the Buddha and his teachings tales from Tibet are also adaptations of the same style and often the communications between men and animals forms the basis for these stories. The sole objective of this work ?Historical Value of the Qur?an and the Hadith? is to focus on historical importance of early Islamic scriptures?the Qur?an and the Hadith. The Qur?an, the Hadith, as a historical source, has its peculiar qualities. It was revealed directly to the Prophet who stood for the foundation and propagation of Islam and was during his life-time committed to writing as well. It was revealed to the Prophet during a long span of time, in Mecca as well as in Medina, and hence it contains references to almost all major developments in the early period of Islam. The Framework of Nagarjuna’s Philosophy
Sri Satguru Publications; Delhi, India; 1988; 8170301246; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book 'The Framework of Nagarjuna's philosophy' is an attempt to reconstruct a better understanding of Nagarjuna's philosophy in a novel way. It is a new and somewhat unconventional way of looking at Nagarajuna's philosophy. The work is carried out by strictly adhering to original Sanskrit text-Madhyamaka Sastra. The Author has dealt with three important concepts viz. Pratitya Samutpada, Sunyata and, Nirvana which are considered to be highly technical, philosophically rich and intellectually rewarding as pillars of Nagarajuna's philosophical position viz. Madhyama Pratipad. By analysing these three concepts, the author shows that intricate line of Nagarjuna's reasoning is woven around them. The author further shows that the teaching of the Buddha and thereby path between two extreme positions adopted in this regard on any level of understanding. It is the contention of the author that the meaning of Madhyama marga can be understood only by proper understanding interrelation, between Pratitya Samutpada, Sunyata and Nirvana as' distinct from its simplistic interpretation in vogue. This book, it is hoped, will be A Good contribution to the field of Indian philosophy in general and classical Buddhist philosophy in particular.Printed Pages: 176. 101120

The Writings of A. M. Shah: The Household and Family in India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125053409; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume brings together the seminal contributions of the sociologist Professor A. M. Shah to the study of the household and family in India. The Household Dimension of the Family in India (Book One) was widely regarded as a landmark study when it first appeared in 1973. It combines micro and macro perspectives, and offers a rigorous critique of the stereotype of the ‘decline’ of the joint family under conditions of industrial modernisation. This book continues to be used as a principal text in many family and kinship courses in sociology departments across the country. It is reproduced here with the original foreword by M. N. Srinivas and the original Annotated Bibliography. The Family in India: Critical Essays (Book Two), first published in 1998, covers a wide range of theoretical, methodological, substantive and policy issues relating to the family. Book Three, titled Essays on the Family and the Elderly, contains three more recent essays, which explore the effects of changes in the family on the elderly; explain the relevance of census data for studies of the household; and comment on the current state of family studies in India from the perspective of the author’s many decades of engagement with the field. The Writings of A. M. Shah has a foreword by Professor Patricia Uberoi.Printed Pages: 536. 101998

The Buddhist Perspectives on Human Rights
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8175332921; Hardcover; New; New;
Buddhist ethics is a Dharmic system of role responsibilities rather than an ethic of rights. The essence of Buddhist moral theory is compassion, but that Buddhist compassion is not necessarily incompatible with human rights. Compassion brings three important considerations to discussions of the nature of human rights: that human relations are determined by more than rational, external and private domains considerations : that human relationships include rights and duties but also a broader range of choices ; and that compassion entails a dynamic, moral development view of human nature. While compassion grounds Buddhist ethics (especially Mahayana Ethics), human rights builds a framework for extending the reach of natural compassion and for serving the goods that compassion affords to all persons in society. The most constructive contribution Buddhism has to make to international human rights debates because it allows the possibility of incorporating distinctive ethical frameworks for example, Buddhist compassion and Western liberal democracy – into a quest for an enriched and broadened understanding of human rights. Global Campaign for Women's Human Rights
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8175332972; Hardcover; New; New;
The term "women's human rights" does not refer simply to the theoretical approaches that women have used to transform human rights concepts, programs and agendas. In addition to being instrumental in the formulation of the conceptual challenges and demands levied by women, the idea of women's human rights has had immense impact as a tool for political activism. The concept of women's human rights has opened the way for women around the world to ask hard questions about the official inattention and general indifference to the widespread discrimination and violence that women experience everyday. Whether used in political lobbying in legal cases, in grassroots mobilization, or in broad-based educational efforts, the idea of women's human rights has been a rallying point for women across many boundaries and has facilitated the creation of collaborative strategies for promoting and protecting the human rights of women. The Divine Sense: The Intellect in Patristic Theology
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521793173; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
In the first book-length treatment of this subject, A. N. Williams examines the conception of the intellect in patristic theology from its beginnings in the work of the Apostolic Fathers to Augustine and Cassian in the early fifth century. The patristic notion of intellect emerges from its systematic relations to other components of theology: the relation of human mind to the body and the will; the relation of the human to the divine intellect; of human reason to divine revelation and secular philosophy; and from the use of the intellect in both theological reflection and spiritual contemplation. The patristic conception of that intellect is therefore important for the way it signals the character of early Christian theology as both systematic and contemplative and as such, distinctive in its approach from secular philosophies of its time and modern Christian theology. • Examines the distinctive character of Christian theology in this period • Will be of interest to scholars in a variety of disciplines including theology and philosophy, and historians of late antiquity • The first book-length treatment of this subject Contents Introduction; 1. The dawn of Christian theology; 2. Early Alexandrians: Clement and Origen; 3. Cappadocian theology: Nazianzen and Nyssen; 4. Augustine; 5. Monastic writings; Epilogue. Printed Pages: 364. 018637

Madhav & Kama: A Love Story from Ancient India
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8186939245; First Edition; Paperback; New; 8.5 x 5.5 Inches
This is the story of Mádhavánala and Kamákandalá. Madhav, a handsome and accomplished young man, is asked to leave his city of Pushpávati: his looks and singing so distract women that they neglect their work, and cityfolk are in uproar about it. Exiled, Madhav reaches the court of King Kama Sena, the ruler of Kámávati, where he meets the bewitching courtesan Kama. The two fall in love, but royal ire ensures that the lovers must part. A heartbroken Madhav takes shelter in a temple at Ujjain, the city of King Vikramaditya. What can the great ruler do to assuage Madhav's pain? What does he do to reunite the lovers? This lively and colourful tale has an ending that matches its evocative language, startling metaphors and candid narration of love. In circulation since the twelfth century ad, Madhav & Kama has been translated from the original Sanskrit text for readers in English for the first time. Printed Pages: 95. 015723
