Ayurvedic Healing: A Comprehensive Guide
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120809572; Third Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
Ayurvedic Healing is oriented towards the practical treatment of disease. It is intended to serve as a handbook of Ayurvedic therapy, mainly on herbal level. It also explains relevant dietary, life-style and yogic methods to enhance herbal therapy, including the use of oils, aromas, colours, gems and mantras. On the first level of treatment, Ayurvedic Healing outlines general constitutional and life-style measures for health enhancement and disease prevention and gives home remedies for common disease. We can treat many of our disease ourselves or at least aid in their treatment. A few simple therapies as part of our daily regimen can work wonders for countering many health problems. Only when our life-style is out of harmony, do severe diseases arise and professional health care becomes necessary. On the second level of treatment, Ayurvedic Healing provides specialized medical knowledge and outlines specific remedies, including various herbal recommendations. However, accounts of diseases and their treatments are given here only in essence. Additional knowledge and experienced practice may be necessary to deal with severe conditions, acute symptoms or long standing complaints.Printed Pages: 402. 102660

Soma in Yoga and Ayurveda: The Power of Rejuvenation and Immortality
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120836308; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Soma is one of the key words in the ancient traditions of India. It stands for all that is gentle, beautiful, delicate, and sweet of temperament. It is also a synonym for the Moon. A person is complimented by calling him/her saumya, moon-like. A saumya face, saumya mien is what one looks for in choosing a friend. Soma is part of the eternal pair of Agni- Soma. Agni is the fire element; Soma is the water element, moonlike. This pair is the Vedic equivalent of the Taoist yin-yang principle, balancing of the female and the male, energizer (female) and the energized (male). What is the secret of Soma, the legendary mystic drink of immortality, first lauded by India's ancient Vedic seers? Is Soma a single plant, a type of plants, a way of healing, a special intoxicant, or an inner elixir produced by Yoga and meditation? Going back to the vision of the Vedic seers, David Frawley reveals the secret of Soma for body, mind and spirit, with its profound implications from diet and herbs to pranayama, mantra and meditation. His new analysis of Soma, reflecting forty years of study of Vedic texts, is practical, comprehensive and deeply insightful so that you can bring the secret power of Soma into all aspects of your life and consciousness, and for the world as a whole.Printed Pages: 392. 102700

Hinduism: The Eternal Tradition (Sanatana Dharma)
Voice of India; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8185990832; Softcover; New;
The present volume is a series of reflections, as well as questions and answers, on Sanatana Dharma, the universal tradition behind Hinduism and the yogic spirituality that derives from it. It is not about Hinduism as a religious belief as opposed to others (which exists more in the minds of non-Hindus than in the minds of those we would consider themselves to be Hindus). Yet it does recognize the value and importance of the Hindu tradition and its special corpus of knowledge. It is meant to present Hinduism in its true light, which is a spiritual art and science designed to connect us to our original nature as Pure Consciousness. Printed Pages: 273. 111304

Vedantic Meditation: Lighting the Flame of Awareness
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2000; 1556433344; Softcover; New;
As yoga gains popularity across the U.S., many people are becoming interested in its traditional Vedic roots. While Buddhist meditation is well represented on bookshelves, there has been little Vedantic philosophy written in lay terms until now. Author David Frawley guides readers through the challenges of cultivating awareness, calming the mind, and practicing meditation according to Vedanta and Hinduism. He examines how cultural knowledge systems in the West lead individuals to disillusionment, and speaks about how meditation can aid in understanding the true nature of one's thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. Frawley explores meditation support practices such as yoga, mantras, kundalini, and pranayama, as well as the role of gurus, and concludes with a short, more technical essay on self-inquiry. The Alchemical Body: Siddha Traditions in Medieval India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8121511151; First Indian Deluxe Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 17 Cms x 26 Cms
The Alchemical Body excavates and centers within its Indian context the lost tradition of the medieval Siddhas. Working from a body of previously unexplored alchemical sources, David Gordon White demonstrates for the first time that the medieval disciplines of Hindu alchemy and hatha yoga were practiced by one and the same people, and that they can only be understood when viewed together. White opens the way to a new and more comprehensive understanding of medieval Indian mysticism, within the broader context of South Asian Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Islam. Yoga in Practice
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121512727; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
Yoga is a body of practice that spans two millennia and transcends the boundaries of any single religion, geographic region, or teaching lineage. In fact, over the centuries there have been many “yogas”—yogas of battlefield warriors, of itinerant minstrels and beggars, of religious reformers, and of course, the yogas of mind and body so popular today. Yoga in Practice is an anthology of primary texts drawn from the diverse yoga traditions of India, greater Asia, and the West. This one-of-a-kind source book features elegant translations of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and even Islamic yogic writings, many of them being made available in English for the very first time. Collected here are ancient, colonial, and modern texts reflecting a broad range of genres, from an early medical treatise in Sanskrit to Upnishadic verses on sacred sounds; from a Tibetan catechetical dialogue to funerary and devotional songs still sung in India today; and from a 1930s instructional guide by the grandfather of contemporary yoga to the private papers of a pioneer of tantric yoga in America. Emphasizing the lived experiences to be found in the many worlds of yoga, Yoga in Practice includes David Gordon White’s informative general introduction as well as concise introductions to each reading by the book’s contributors. Lion's Honey: The Myth of Samson
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0143103652; First Edition; Flexiback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Samson the hero; a brave warrior, leader of men and Nazarite of God? Or a misfit given to whoring and lust, who failed to fulfil his destiny? In Lion’s Honey, award-winning writer David Grossman takes on one of the most vivid and controversial characters in the Bible. Revisiting Samson’s famous battle with the lion, his many women and his betrayal by them all—including the only one he ever loved—Grossman gives us a provocative new take on the story and its climax, Samson’s final act of death, bringing down a temple on himself and three thousand Philistines. In exhilarating and lucid prose, Grossman reveals the journey of a single, lonely and tortured soul who never found a true home in the world, who was uncomfortable in his own body and who, some might say, was the precursor to today’s suicide bombers. Histories for the Subordinated
Permanent Black; Delhi, India; 2006; 8178240998; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14.5 Cms 22.5 Cms
David Hardiman, a founding member of ‘Subaltern Studies’ and the author of several monographs on the societies, cultures, and histories of Western India (Gujarat, Maharashtra, and parts of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan), is widely recognized as being among the foremost contemporary historians of the subcontinent. His prose is seen as being particularly accessible and jargon-free. Hardiman’s practice as a historian— both via his enormously rich empiricism, archival work, and fieldwork, as well as via his discursive lucidity—has been an inspiration to many, even as it has implicitly questioned some of the fashionably arcane modes of history-writing. This collection pulls together Hardiman’s core ideas and writings on politics, environmental issues, Gandhi, moneylending, disease, and subaltern history. Many of these writings are not otherwise easily available. This book will interest all serious readers of Indian history as well as scholars in the areas of politics, sociology, culture, and religion in modern India. It is also hoped that it will be of some value for marginalized and subordinate groups in India, providing examples of how their histories may be written, and serving as a tribute to their resilience in continuing adversity and oppression. The Cambridge Companion to Narrative provides a unique and valuable overview of current approaches to narrative study. An international team of experts explores ideas of storytelling and methods of narrative analysis as they have emerged across diverse traditions of inquiry and in connection with a variety of media, from film and television, to storytelling in the 'real-life' contexts of face-to-face interaction, to literary fiction. Mulamadhyamakakarika of Nagarjuna: The Philosophy of the Middle Way
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 812080774X; Sixth Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
This is a completely new translation of Nagarjuna`s major work the Mulamadhyamakakarika, accompanied by a detailed annotation of each of the verses. The annotation identifies the metaphysical theories of the scholastics criticized by Nagarjuna, and traces the source material and the arguments utilized in his refutation back to the early discourses of the Buddha. The Introduction presents a completely new hypothesis about the nature of treatise. The work is a grand commentary on the Buddha's "Discourse to Katyayana" (Kaccayanaqotta-sutta). The concluding part of the Introduction compares the teaching of the Buddha and Nagarjuna in regard to epistemology, ontology, ethics and philosophy of language indicating how the latter was making a determined attempt to reconstruct the Buddha's teachings in a very faithful manner, avoiding the substantialist metaphysics of the scholastics.Printed Pages: 430. 102391

Terrorists and Terrorism in the Contemporary World is an accessible introduction to terrorists and their psychology in an historical context. Focusing on a variety of prominent terrorist groups together with a number of less notorious ones, readers are encouraged to think about the mindset, motivation, and tactics of terrorists. David J. Whittaker also discusses the problems of countering these terrorists. Taking into account the importance of the thinking and persuasions of terrorists in earlier years, the book also links contemporary terrorists with those who came before them. Out of the Mountains: The Coming Age of the Urban Guerrilla
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199450366; Hardcover; New; New;
In his third book, David Kilcullen takes us out of the mountains: away from the remote, rural guerrilla warfare of Afghanistan, and into the marginalised slums and complex security threats of the world`s coastal cities, where almost 75 per cent of us will be living by 2050. Scrutinising major environmental trends ? population growth, coastal urbanisation?and increasing digital connectivity, he projects a future of feral cities, urban systems under stress, and increasing overlaps between crime and war, internal and external threats, and the real and virtual worlds. Informed by Kilcullen`s own fieldwork in the Caribbean, Somalia, the Middle East and Afghanistan, and that of his field research teams in cities in Central America and Africa, Out of the Mountains presents detailed, on-the-ground accounts of the new faces of modern conflict ? from the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, to transnational drug networks, local street gangs, and the uprisings of the Arab Spring. Tantric Visions of the Divine Feminine: The Ten Mahavidyas
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120815238; Softcover; New;
What is one to make of a group of goddesses that includes a goddess who cuts her own head off, a goddess who sits on a corpse while pulling the tongue of a demon, or a goddess who prefers sex with corpses? Tantra visions of the Divine Faminine deals with a group of ten Hindu tantric goddesses, the Mahavidyas, who embody habits, attributes, or identities, usually considered repulsive or socially subversive. It is within the context of tantric worship that devotees seek to identify themselves with these forbidding goddesses. The Mahavidyas, who embody habits, attributes, or identities, usually considered repulsive or socially subversive. It is within the context of tantric worship that devotees seek to identify themselves with these forbidding goddesses. The Mahavidyas seem to function as "awakeners" - symbols that help to project one's consciousness beyond the socially acceptable or predictable. Kinsley not only describes the eccentric qualities of each of these goddesses, but seeks to interpret the Mahavidyas as a group and to explain their importance for understanding Tantra and the Hindu tradition.Printed Pages: 328. 102331

English Country Furniture: 1500 -1900
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 1851493026; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 279 x 216 Mm
The literature on English period furniture has largely been dominated by a preoccupation with that of the rich and upper classes, resulting in a neglect of the humbler pieces used in more ordinary homes over the centuries. This attitude is now regarded as unacceptable, however, and the past everyday furniture of England has accordingly become the focus of intensive research. This book, the first major production of its kind and now a classic reference work, examines the pieces found in humbler urban and rural homes over a span of some four centuries, throwing fresh light on such aspects as regionalvariations, dating assessment, construction techniques, stylistic influenceand context. Each of the many examples illustrated, most of them previouslyunpublished in book form, is accompanied by a detailed caption giving timber,a realistic date range and an extensive description, including such informationas local characteristics, finish, distinctive decorative features and manufacturing methods. In this second edition both the format and the text have been thoroughlyrevised and the number of illustrations greatly increased. The Author David Knell is a former Sotheby’s consultant with a specialist expertise in early and vernacular furniture. In addition to contributing articles to periodicals and academic publications, he has lectured widelyon his chosen field both in North America and in Britain. Brought up in Canada, he now lives in West Sussex, where he is furniture consultant to the Mary Rose Trust. His professional involvement with theauction world allows him to actively continue his research * The first and only work of its kind on Country Furniture * The first book to stress the full impact of Oriental influence on English furniture * Challenges several popular beliefs and re-evaluate * Very readable and accessible text. The Bhaktirasamrtasindhu of Rupa Gosvamin
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 2003; 812081861X; Hardcover; New; New;
Bhakti or devotional love is the way of directly encountering the rasa in human )experience. The aesthetic experience of rasa which is available to human beings was somehow not fully manifested and established from the 'intellectual' point of view. A glimpse of the rasa accomplished is available in the encounter of Uddhava and gopis. Humans by nature are rational and logical beings. They prefer logical conclusions which have universal applicability. To logically establish the path of rasa was the endeavour of the seekers and thinkers of V?ndavana, which emerged as the seventeenth century intellectual, cultural and spiritual centre of the Vraja region. Sri Rupa Gosvamin, a direct disciple of Sri Caitanya, was a shining member of the team of six Gosvamins. For him the emotionally experienced bhaktiprema-rasa is equally knowable and communicable. The human consciousness could reach the ocean of rasa through Sri Bhaktirasam?tasindhu. If there is an experience, it can be expressed and for an expression to be meaningful it has to be guided by a "grammar" or a Sastra. The famous trilogy of Bhaktirasam?tasindhu, Ujjvalanilama?i and Niitakacandrikia of Sri Rupa Gosvamin provided for the first time a total Sastra of bhaktirasa.It is felt that the Bhaktirasam?tasindhu be made available to the English-knowing world as well. David Haberman has fulfilled this need by undertaking the stupendous task of translating this definitive text on bhakti rasa into English. The present edition includes the original Sanskrit in Devanagar1, Haberman's translation and exegetical notes explaining all the intricate points of the text. An exhaustive table of contents and elaborate introduction, glossary and bibliography have greatly enhanced the value of the edition.Printed Pages: 744. 101665

The Young Karl Marx: German Philosophy, Modern Politics, and Human Flourishing
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 0521874777; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 155 x 235 Mm
The Young Karl Marx is an innovative and important new study of Marx’s early writings. These writings provide the fascinating spectacle of a powerful and imaginative intellect wrestling with complex and significant issues, but they also present formidable interpretative obstacles to modern readers. David Leopold shows how an understanding of their intellectual and cultural context can illuminate the political dimension of these works. An erudite yet accessible discussion of Marx’s influences and targets frames the author’s critical engagement with Marx’s account of the emergence, character, and (future) replacement of the modern state. This combination of historical and analytical approaches results in a sympathetic, but not uncritical, exploration of such fundamental themes as alienation, citizenship, community, antisemitism, and utopianism. The Young Karl Marx is a scholarly and original work which provides a radical and persuasive reinterpretation of Marx’s complex and often misunderstood views of German philosophy, modern politics, and human flourishing. • Provides a clear and accessible account of difficult and unfamiliar concepts used by Marx • Discusses the historical context as well as the analytical structure of Marx’s arguments • Offers an innovative and well-founded interpretation of Marx’s political and philosophical thought Contents Acknowledgements; A note on language, references, and translation; 1. Introduction; 2. German philosophy; 3. Modern politics; 4. Human flourishing; 5. Epilogue; Bibliographical note. Printed Pages: 344. 019637
