Environment Evolution and Values
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 818069366X; Hardcover; New; New;
This book is mainly concerned with Environment Evolution and Values, terms which figure in its very title. The basic underlying concepts of Evolution are Natural Environment highlighted by Lamarck (1744-1829), Heredity and Natural Selection emphasised by Darwin (1809-1882) and Genetic Mutation first developed by Mendel (1822-1884). Though these three great life scientists brought to light three main components of biological evolution, these were known and formulated by others for a long time. Nature is ordinarily believed to be a world of facts governed by law of causality and values are said to be rooted in human freedom. The author of this book has paid special attention to the so-called value-fact dualism with special reference to changing theories of evolution, and an attempt has been made to show that the supposed dualism is untenable. This book will be of interest to philosophers, life scientists and social scientists. It will be of interest also to the general readers. Printed Pages: 332. 112066

Prayaga: The Site of Kumbha Mela
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8173052034; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
The present work is an attempt to outline the essential features of the cultural History of Prayaga from varied sources with a view to bringing out that magnetic quality of the Tirtharaja which has been attracting multitudes from far and near. The greatness of Prayaga, perceptible since the Vedic period, is adumbrated in the Epic-Puranic literature, and is attested by epigraphic records, Buddhist and Jaina texts, foreign (Chinese, Muslim and European) accounts, treatises on tirtha, and vernacular literature which received and developed further this great traditional lore about Prayaga. Archaeological evidences have also been accumulated to a considerable extent. The task of sifting and interpreting this immense material, contained inter alia in the numerous and varied texts is not easy. The most ticklish problem faced by the researcher consists of imparting the traditional pronouncements an interpretation intelligible to the modern world but without prejudice to their original import. As such the researcher is inevitably faced with innumerable odds. The success or failure of the present work is, therefore, to be viewed in the Context of these inherent difficulties and predicaments. If India had first attracted the attention of the West as the land of temples and Sadhus, her tirthas and melas pulling huge tides of humanity from far and near by their religio-cultural power also captured the imagination of the world in a big way It is a pity that Prayaga, traditionally the king of tirthas and the site of world's largest fair, could not be given an authentic cultural history of its own before the present work. This work essays the difficult task of distinguishing the religio-cultural lore of Prayaga from the outrageous domain of mysteries and wonders which it was initially consigned to and also the gazetteer-like uncritical approach of numerous journalistic works which do not rise above the level of a popular guide. The topical rather than exhaustive approach of the work taking into account all the aspects of Prayaga's religio-cultural personality preserves the spirit and depth of genuine research. The bite is not too big to be chewed. It probes the questions of sacred geography, Subtirthas, historicity of Aksayavata (the eternal fig tree) and religious suicide besides giving a critical and authenticated account of the ritual practices and a source-based history of the Kumbha Mela, including its various dimensions. The deep textual study, field work and handling of the relevant archeo-epigraphic material makes the Book both stimulating and instructive Inclusion of evocative and rare illustrations further add to the use-value of the Endeavour.Printed Pages: 200 with 6 maps & figures & 21 halftone illustrations. 100216

Determination of longevity is an integral part of horoscopy. It is as different and complicated as it is important. The author, who is both a teacher and a practitioner of the science, has dealt with the whole subject in an easy-to-understand style for the beginner as well as the seasoned. Beginning with the elementaries he proceeds in sequence to the more and more difficult aspects of the subject culminating ultimately in their synthesis. First he outlines the essential procedures for checking the correctness of time and date of Birth for preparing the birth chart and then he goes on to the identification of inauspicious yogas. There after follows a vivid discussion on Balarishtas and Arishta-bhangas etc. The philosophy behind the yogas has been logically explained. Nepal in Transition: A Way Forward
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381411070; Hardcover; New; New;
Nepal's democracy struggle has been continuing for more than six decades. Since it could not sustain a stable democratic framework even after several attempts in the past, many scholars are stating that Nepal is in permanent transition. Once again, however, it has bagged enormous success in the field of political transformation in 2006 through a highly successful but peacefully organised movement with participation of people from all fields in large numbers. But it could not deconstruct the position of the transition as it has failed to institutionalise the recently gained achievements by making a new constitution even after five years. The only positive thing is that Nepali people, along with various political parties, are still trying hard to resolve vital conflicting issues through dialogue, and come up with a new democratic constitution, though they have already missed three deadlines.Printed Pages: 376. 103199

In spite of this high economic growth rate, the issues of poverty, unemployement, malnourishment of children has not been adequately taken care of. These are some few details that the book discusses. The Flaming Feet and Other Essays: The Dalit Movement in India
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242761; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Described by Ashis Nandy as the foremost non-Brahmin intellectual to emerge from India’s vast non-English speaking world, D.R. Nagaraj (1954–1998) was a profound political commentator and cultural critic. Nagaraj’s importance lies in consolidating and advancing some of the ideas of India’s leading Dalit thinker and icon, B.R. Ambedkar. Following Ambedkar, Nagaraj argues that the Dalit movement rejected the traditional Hindu world and thus dismissed untouchable pasts entirely; but, he says, rebels too require cultural memory. Their emotions of bewilderment, rage, and resentment can only be transcended via a politics of affirmation. This book gives us Nagaraj’s vision of caste in relation to Dalit politics. It theorizes the caste system as a mosaic of contestations centred around dignity, religiosity, and entitlement. Examining moments of untouchable defiance, Nagaraj argues out a politics of cultural affirmation within his redefinition of Dalit identity. More significantly, he argues against self-pity and rage in artistic imagination, and for re-creating the banished worlds of gods and goddesses. Nagaraj’s importance lies in suggesting a framework for an alliance of all the oppressed communities of India. This involves, first, a reconciliation of Gandhi and Ambedkar; second, a recognition that modernity has caused a technocide vis-ŕ-vis artisans; third, a reimagining of the Dalit rejection of history, for an alternative reading of untouchable pasts shows that these humiliated communities possessed an autonomous cultural domain. Nagaraj was that rare observer of politics who did not offer standard social science fare: in fact, he used the phrase ‘competent social scientist’ to damn the person he was speaking of. Not only were his themes unusual, his analytical methods and quirky reliance on cultural texts for analysis were equally so. He uses such material and focuses on these themes because his sensibility was shaped by the Dalit movement, as much as by the time he spent scrutinizing literary texts. This is a foundational text for Dalit Studies. Printed Pages: 276. 033889

Printed Pages: 276. 101789

Listening to the Loom: Essays on Literature, Politics, and Violence
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2012; 817824330X; Hardcover; New; New;
Now, for the first time, a largely unknown and unavailable corpus of Nagaraj’s ideas and essays, amplifying and supplementing those in The Flaming Feet, are published in Listening to the Loom. This book provides Nagaraj’s most important writings on literature, politics, and violence. Some of the thirteen pieces here are translated from Kannada into English for the first time, while others long unavailable have been hunted out from scattered sources. The title of this book, Listening to the Loom, derives from a story recounted by the novelist U.R. Ananthamurthy. Walking in Kathmandu with Nagaraj, once, his companion asked him to stop and listen to the sound of a weaver’s loom that only he had heard. Ananthamurthy recalls saying to Nagaraj that so long as he, Nagaraj, retained this ability to hear the sound of a loom, he would never become a ‘Non-Resident Indian’ intellectual. In the present volume, Nagaraj’s ear for the sound and sense of things quintessentially Indian is everywhere apparent. Part I comprises essays on Kannada’s cultural experiences, Part II contains essays on politics and violence. All of them were mostly written between 1993 and 1998, the period when Nagaraj emerged as a mature thinker and produced some of his most important insights.Printed Pages: 388. 101963

The Lankavatara Sutra: A Mahayana text for the first time from the original Sanskrit with a foreword by Moti Lal Pandit
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The present translation of D.T. Suzuki is based upon the Sanskrit edition of Bunyu Nanjo (1923). The Lankavatara Sutra reflects those fundamental themes of Buddhism which the Mahayana in general cherishes and upholds. It looks at existence from the absolute and relative realms, and thinks that suffering will be experienced so long as one confines oneself to the realm of the relative. Since the relative cannot be ultimately realm, it has to be seen as nothing more than a projection of the mind. As to how to realize the ultimate truth of unity the text resorts to general Mahayana theory of Buddhalogy in which the Buddha is seen as the ultimate ontological principle. In order to realize unity with this ontic principle, we have to make use of such methods, which though relative, terminate in the realization of Enlightenment, These methods are spoken of as Skilful Means. As a spiritual manual, the text points out as to how the Bodhisattvas, on account of their unlimited compassion for sentient beings, work for the salvation of all. While delineating on the theme of Bodhisattvas, the text thereby speaks about the ten vows of a Bodhisattva. It is in incarnating these vows of a Bodhisattva. It is in incarnating these vows within that a real turn-about or spiritual transformation occurs, and thereby are uprooted the roots of ignorance. The text, thus, offers a spiritual banquet to those who want to taste the bliss eternal. Printed Pages: 356. 032995

Essays in Zen Buddhism: Third Series
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121509572; Reprint; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this book the author has tried to trace the relationship which exists between Zen and the two chief Mahayana Sutras the Gandavyuha and Prajnaparamita, and then the transformation, through which Indian Buddhism had to go while adapting itself to Chinese psychology. The Chinese are a practical people quite different from the Indian, who are highly endowed with the power of abstraction as well as an inexhaustible mine of imagination. It was natural that the Mahayana teachings had to be transformed as to make them appreciated by the Chinese. This meant that the Gandavyuha and Prajnaparamita were to be transformed into Zen dialogues. Printed Pages: 396 with 31 illustrations. 032270

In this book the chief stress has been placed on the study of 'The Koan Exercise', which at present constitutes almost the alpha and omega of Zen discipline especially as it is practised in the Rinzai School of Zen sect. The Koan technique is full of pitfalls, but its development was inevitable and without it Zen might not have survived. In this volume author has also included some Suiboku paintings by both Japanese and Chinese artists. Printed Pages: 388 with 20 illustrations. 032269

Living By Zen
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8121510015; Reprint; Paperback; New; 12 x 18 Cm
This book contains a number of essays which D.T. Suzuki wrote from time to time concerning the specificity and uniqueness of Zen Buddhism, or the school of Buddhism that values meditative practice more than philosophical thinking. This book may be considered as an introduction to Zen on account of the concern shown for such themes which a beginner needs to know.In the very first essay is explained as to what Zen way of life denotes. Many find it difficult to comprehend the language of Zen. That is the author has made an attempt at clarifying the Zen idea of a koan, which is a paradoxical question verging almost on absurdity. It is believed that enlightenment or satori comes to be once a koan is understood. The book offers a rich banquet to those who want to taste the flavour of the feast of Zen. Studies in the Lankavatara Sutra: One of the most important texts of Mahayana Buddhism, in which almost all its principal tenets are presented, including the teaching of Zen
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121508339; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Lankavatara Sutra is one of the most important Mahayana texts, and the Nepalese Buddhists consider it to be one of the nine canonical texts. The text contains almost all the main ideas, both philosophical and theological, of Mahayana Buddhism. The Yogacara School of Mahayana considers this text to be its fundamental text, as it contains all those ideas of idealism, like Mind-only, store-house-consciousness, which would form the basis of the philosophy of this school. As the text is terse, difficult to understand, and complex insofar as the presentation of ideas is concerned, the author has tried his best to explain the basic ideas of the Lankavatara in the context of historical evolution of Buddhism, which culminated in the emergence of Mahayana. In the first part of the book the author has made a textual study of the text in the context of various translations that were carried out in China. Simultaneously the author also has pointed out the impact of the text exerted upon Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, and particularly upon the Zen. In the rest of the book the author has engaged himself in explaining the complex philosophical ideas that are to be found in the text, and how these ideas were made use of by various Buddhist schools. The author also points out the intimate relationship that exists between the Lankavatara and Zen Buddhism. Although not exclusively a Zen text, yet its impact upon Zen cannot be denied. The non-Zen ideas of the text, particularly those pertaining to the Yogacara, have been discussed by the author in the third part of the book. The author has prepared a glossary of Sanskrit terms for the benefit of Chinese and Japanese readers. The book, thus, has been written for all those who are deeply interested in Buddhist thought and philosophy. The Studies in the Lankavatara Sutra is the first attempt ever made at studying systematically the philosophical ideas and religious practices that are to be found in the Lankavatara Sutra. Those interested in Mahayana Buddhism will greatly benefit from the scholarly study of Prof. Suzuki of this important text. Printed Pages: 496. 027994

Zen Buddhism: Selected Writings of D.T. Suzuki
Three Leaves Press; 038548349X; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
No other figure in history has played a bigger part in opening the West to Buddhism than the eminent Zen author, D.T. Suzuki, and in this reissue of his best work readers are given the very heart of Zen teaching. Zen Buddhism, which sold more than 125,000 as an Anchor paperback after its publication in 1956, includes a basic historical background as well as a thorough overview of the techniques for Zen practice. Concepts and terminology such as satori, zazen, and koans, as well as the various elements of this philosophy are all given clear explanations. But while Suzuki takes nothing for granted in the reader's understanding of the fundamentals, he does not give a merely rudimentary overview. Each of the essays included here, particularly those on the unconscious mind and the relation of Zen to Western philosophy, go far beyond other sources for their penetrating insights and timeless wisdom. What is most important about D.T. Suzuki's work, however--and what comes across so powerfully in these selections--is his unparalleled ability to communicate the experiential aspect of Zen. The intensity here with which Zen philosophy comes to life is without parallel in the canon of Buddhist literature. Suzuki stands apart from all teachers before or since because of his exceptional ability to eloquently capture in words the seemingly inexpressible essence of Zen. Printed Pages: 400. 037579

The last 20 years have seen an explosion of research and development in the neurosciences. Indeed, some have called this first decade of the 21st century ‘the decade of the mind’. An all-encompassing term, the neurosciences cover such fields as biology, psychology, neurology, psychiatry and philosophy and include anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and behaviour. It is now a major industry with billions of dollars of funding invested from both public and private sectors. Huge progress has been made in our understanding of the brain and its functions. However, with progress comes controversy, responsibility and dilemma. The New Brain Sciences: Perils and Prospects examines the implications of recent discoveries in terms of our sense of individual responsibility and personhood. With contributing chapters from respected and influential names in neuroscience, law, psychology, philosophy and sociology, The New Brain Sciences should kick-start a discussion of where neuroscience is headed. • Thought-provoking debate on the state of neuroscience research, with perspectives on social science and political implications • Internationally recognised general editors • Easy-to-read, popular style Contents Part I. Mahamudra: The Moonlight (The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation), (Third Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120810740; Third Edition; Softcover; New;
Mahamudra meditation is simultaneously the most profound of meditative disciplines and most accessible for modern practitioners. Traditionally passed orally from teacher to disciple, mahamudra instructions point the meditator to the innate perfection of every experience. When it first appeared in 1986, Mahamudra : The Moonlight – The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation was the first presentation in English of a major Tibetan Buddhist work on meditation. This classic guide was composed in the sixteen century by an eminent lama of the Kagyu School and is so comprehensive and practical that it still widely used today as a manual. Divided into two major sections, it presents first the common approach and then the mahamudra approach to tranquility (samatha) and insight (vipasyana) meditation. Mahamudra is the first English translation of a major Tibetan Buddhist presentation of the theory and practice of meditation-a manual detailing the various stages and practices for training the advanced student. The original Tibetan text of nearly 800 pages was composed by Takpo Tashi Namgyal (1512-1587), a great lama and a scholar of the kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. His text is so vast and thorough in scope that it is still the primary source used by living Tibetan meditation masters in instructing their disciples. The first major text representing the meditational methods of both mahayana and vajrayana Buddhism to appear in English, Mahamudra is an invaluable guide for advanced students, scholars, and Buddhist practitioners. Activating Bodhichitta and a Meditation on Compassion (Second Edition)
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8186470522; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
There is no more powerful mind than bodhicitta. There is no more joyous mind than bodhicitta. For the accomplishment of one's own ultimate purpose, the awakening mind is supreme, and to accomplish the purpose of all other living beings there is nothing superior to bodhicitta. The awakening mind is the unsurpassable way to collect merit. To purify obstacles bodhicitta is supreme. For protection from interferences bodhicitta is supreme. It is the unique, all-encompassing method. Every kind of ordinary and supra-mundane power can be accomplished through bodhicitta. Thus, it is absolutely precious. Even though we personally may find difficulty in immediate and thorough generation of such a mind, we should at least direct our thoughts towards it. To train our mind in such an ultimately altruistic manner from the very beginning of our practice of Dharma is vitally important.Printed Pages: 77. 103551

6093 Dalai Lama
Stages of Meditation
Rider Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 0712629637; Softcover; New;
In STAGES OF MEDITATION, His Holiness offers his highly practical views on the subject of meditation: how to do it, the various different procedures and approaches we can take, what we and others may gain from it. He explains how we can develop a spiritual path in a proper sequence rather than in a scattered, piecemeal fashion. He also shows the importance of building up both method and wisdom, as well as cultivating compassion and 'special insight' as we train our minds. This impressive and stimulating book will not only bring the Dalai Lama - one of the world's most popular and pragmatic spiritual leaders - to a huge new audience but, because so many people round the globe are now practising meditation, from a basis of religious faith or none, this is a work which will doubtless be in print for many years to come. 112916
