6301 D.R. Nagaraj
The Flaming Feet and Other Essays: The Dalit Movement in India
Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8178242761; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Described by Ashis Nandy as the foremost non-Brahmin intellectual to emerge from India’s vast non-English speaking world, D.R. Nagaraj (1954–1998) was a profound political commentator and cultural critic. Nagaraj’s importance lies in consolidating and advancing some of the ideas of India’s leading Dalit thinker and icon, B.R. Ambedkar. Following Ambedkar, Nagaraj argues that the Dalit movement rejected the traditional Hindu world and thus dismissed untouchable pasts entirely; but, he says, rebels too require cultural memory. Their emotions of bewilderment, rage, and resentment can only be transcended via a politics of affirmation. This book gives us Nagaraj’s vision of caste in relation to Dalit politics. It theorizes the caste system as a mosaic of contestations centred around dignity, religiosity, and entitlement. Examining moments of untouchable defiance, Nagaraj argues out a politics of cultural affirmation within his redefinition of Dalit identity. More significantly, he argues against self-pity and rage in artistic imagination, and for re-creating the banished worlds of gods and goddesses. Nagaraj’s importance lies in suggesting a framework for an alliance of all the oppressed communities of India. This involves, first, a reconciliation of Gandhi and Ambedkar; second, a recognition that modernity has caused a technocide vis-à-vis artisans; third, a reimagining of the Dalit rejection of history, for an alternative reading of untouchable pasts shows that these humiliated communities possessed an autonomous cultural domain. Nagaraj was that rare observer of politics who did not offer standard social science fare: in fact, he used the phrase ‘competent social scientist’ to damn the person he was speaking of. Not only were his themes unusual, his analytical methods and quirky reliance on cultural texts for analysis were equally so. He uses such material and focuses on these themes because his sensibility was shaped by the Dalit movement, as much as by the time he spent scrutinizing literary texts. This is a foundational text for Dalit Studies. Printed Pages: 276. 033889

Listening to the Loom: Essays on Literature, Politics, and Violence
Orient BlackSwan/Permanent Black; New Delhi, India; 2012; 817824330X; Hardcover; New; New;
Now, for the first time, a largely unknown and unavailable corpus of Nagaraj’s ideas and essays, amplifying and supplementing those in The Flaming Feet, are published in Listening to the Loom. This book provides Nagaraj’s most important writings on literature, politics, and violence. Some of the thirteen pieces here are translated from Kannada into English for the first time, while others long unavailable have been hunted out from scattered sources. The title of this book, Listening to the Loom, derives from a story recounted by the novelist U.R. Ananthamurthy. Walking in Kathmandu with Nagaraj, once, his companion asked him to stop and listen to the sound of a weaver’s loom that only he had heard. Ananthamurthy recalls saying to Nagaraj that so long as he, Nagaraj, retained this ability to hear the sound of a loom, he would never become a ‘Non-Resident Indian’ intellectual. In the present volume, Nagaraj’s ear for the sound and sense of things quintessentially Indian is everywhere apparent. Part I comprises essays on Kannada’s cultural experiences, Part II contains essays on politics and violence. All of them were mostly written between 1993 and 1998, the period when Nagaraj emerged as a mature thinker and produced some of his most important insights.Printed Pages: 388. 101963

The Lankavatara Sutra: A Mahayana text for the first time from the original Sanskrit with a foreword by Moti Lal Pandit
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The present translation of D.T. Suzuki is based upon the Sanskrit edition of Bunyu Nanjo (1923). The Lankavatara Sutra reflects those fundamental themes of Buddhism which the Mahayana in general cherishes and upholds. It looks at existence from the absolute and relative realms, and thinks that suffering will be experienced so long as one confines oneself to the realm of the relative. Since the relative cannot be ultimately realm, it has to be seen as nothing more than a projection of the mind. As to how to realize the ultimate truth of unity the text resorts to general Mahayana theory of Buddhalogy in which the Buddha is seen as the ultimate ontological principle. In order to realize unity with this ontic principle, we have to make use of such methods, which though relative, terminate in the realization of Enlightenment, These methods are spoken of as Skilful Means. As a spiritual manual, the text points out as to how the Bodhisattvas, on account of their unlimited compassion for sentient beings, work for the salvation of all. While delineating on the theme of Bodhisattvas, the text thereby speaks about the ten vows of a Bodhisattva. It is in incarnating these vows of a Bodhisattva. It is in incarnating these vows within that a real turn-about or spiritual transformation occurs, and thereby are uprooted the roots of ignorance. The text, thus, offers a spiritual banquet to those who want to taste the bliss eternal. Printed Pages: 356. 032995

Essays in Zen Buddhism: Third Series
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121509572; Reprint; Paperback; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In this book the author has tried to trace the relationship which exists between Zen and the two chief Mahayana Sutras the Gandavyuha and Prajnaparamita, and then the transformation, through which Indian Buddhism had to go while adapting itself to Chinese psychology. The Chinese are a practical people quite different from the Indian, who are highly endowed with the power of abstraction as well as an inexhaustible mine of imagination. It was natural that the Mahayana teachings had to be transformed as to make them appreciated by the Chinese. This meant that the Gandavyuha and Prajnaparamita were to be transformed into Zen dialogues. Printed Pages: 396 with 31 illustrations. 032270

In this book the chief stress has been placed on the study of 'The Koan Exercise', which at present constitutes almost the alpha and omega of Zen discipline especially as it is practised in the Rinzai School of Zen sect. The Koan technique is full of pitfalls, but its development was inevitable and without it Zen might not have survived. In this volume author has also included some Suiboku paintings by both Japanese and Chinese artists. Printed Pages: 388 with 20 illustrations. 032269

Living By Zen
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8121510015; Reprint; Paperback; New; 12 x 18 Cm
This book contains a number of essays which D.T. Suzuki wrote from time to time concerning the specificity and uniqueness of Zen Buddhism, or the school of Buddhism that values meditative practice more than philosophical thinking. This book may be considered as an introduction to Zen on account of the concern shown for such themes which a beginner needs to know.In the very first essay is explained as to what Zen way of life denotes. Many find it difficult to comprehend the language of Zen. That is the author has made an attempt at clarifying the Zen idea of a koan, which is a paradoxical question verging almost on absurdity. It is believed that enlightenment or satori comes to be once a koan is understood. The book offers a rich banquet to those who want to taste the flavour of the feast of Zen. Studies in the Lankavatara Sutra: One of the most important texts of Mahayana Buddhism, in which almost all its principal tenets are presented, including the teaching of Zen
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121508339; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Lankavatara Sutra is one of the most important Mahayana texts, and the Nepalese Buddhists consider it to be one of the nine canonical texts. The text contains almost all the main ideas, both philosophical and theological, of Mahayana Buddhism. The Yogacara School of Mahayana considers this text to be its fundamental text, as it contains all those ideas of idealism, like Mind-only, store-house-consciousness, which would form the basis of the philosophy of this school. As the text is terse, difficult to understand, and complex insofar as the presentation of ideas is concerned, the author has tried his best to explain the basic ideas of the Lankavatara in the context of historical evolution of Buddhism, which culminated in the emergence of Mahayana. In the first part of the book the author has made a textual study of the text in the context of various translations that were carried out in China. Simultaneously the author also has pointed out the impact of the text exerted upon Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, and particularly upon the Zen. In the rest of the book the author has engaged himself in explaining the complex philosophical ideas that are to be found in the text, and how these ideas were made use of by various Buddhist schools. The author also points out the intimate relationship that exists between the Lankavatara and Zen Buddhism. Although not exclusively a Zen text, yet its impact upon Zen cannot be denied. The non-Zen ideas of the text, particularly those pertaining to the Yogacara, have been discussed by the author in the third part of the book. The author has prepared a glossary of Sanskrit terms for the benefit of Chinese and Japanese readers. The book, thus, has been written for all those who are deeply interested in Buddhist thought and philosophy. The Studies in the Lankavatara Sutra is the first attempt ever made at studying systematically the philosophical ideas and religious practices that are to be found in the Lankavatara Sutra. Those interested in Mahayana Buddhism will greatly benefit from the scholarly study of Prof. Suzuki of this important text. Printed Pages: 496. 027994

Zen Buddhism: Selected Writings of D.T. Suzuki
Three Leaves Press; 038548349X; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
No other figure in history has played a bigger part in opening the West to Buddhism than the eminent Zen author, D.T. Suzuki, and in this reissue of his best work readers are given the very heart of Zen teaching. Zen Buddhism, which sold more than 125,000 as an Anchor paperback after its publication in 1956, includes a basic historical background as well as a thorough overview of the techniques for Zen practice. Concepts and terminology such as satori, zazen, and koans, as well as the various elements of this philosophy are all given clear explanations. But while Suzuki takes nothing for granted in the reader's understanding of the fundamentals, he does not give a merely rudimentary overview. Each of the essays included here, particularly those on the unconscious mind and the relation of Zen to Western philosophy, go far beyond other sources for their penetrating insights and timeless wisdom. What is most important about D.T. Suzuki's work, however--and what comes across so powerfully in these selections--is his unparalleled ability to communicate the experiential aspect of Zen. The intensity here with which Zen philosophy comes to life is without parallel in the canon of Buddhist literature. Suzuki stands apart from all teachers before or since because of his exceptional ability to eloquently capture in words the seemingly inexpressible essence of Zen. Printed Pages: 400. 037579

Karjalan kielen Murrekartasto
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 1997; 9525150054; New;
Kartaston laatiminen aloitettiin 1946. Bubrihin kuoltua työtä jatkoi A. A. Beljakov, ja työ valmistui 1956. Julkaistavaksi hyväksytty käsikirjoitus jäi tuolloin kuitenkin painamatta taloudellisten ja teknisten vaikeuksien vuoksi. 116356

The New Brain Sciences: Perils and Prospects
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2004; 0521537142; First Edition; Paperback; New; 228 x 152 Mm
The last 20 years have seen an explosion of research and development in the neurosciences. Indeed, some have called this first decade of the 21st century ‘the decade of the mind’. An all-encompassing term, the neurosciences cover such fields as biology, psychology, neurology, psychiatry and philosophy and include anatomy, physiology, molecular biology, genetics and behaviour. It is now a major industry with billions of dollars of funding invested from both public and private sectors. Huge progress has been made in our understanding of the brain and its functions. However, with progress comes controversy, responsibility and dilemma. The New Brain Sciences: Perils and Prospects examines the implications of recent discoveries in terms of our sense of individual responsibility and personhood. With contributing chapters from respected and influential names in neuroscience, law, psychology, philosophy and sociology, The New Brain Sciences should kick-start a discussion of where neuroscience is headed. • Thought-provoking debate on the state of neuroscience research, with perspectives on social science and political implications • Internationally recognised general editors • Easy-to-read, popular style Contents Part I. Mahamudra: The Moonlight (The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation), (Third Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8120810740; Third Edition; Softcover; New;
Mahamudra meditation is simultaneously the most profound of meditative disciplines and most accessible for modern practitioners. Traditionally passed orally from teacher to disciple, mahamudra instructions point the meditator to the innate perfection of every experience. When it first appeared in 1986, Mahamudra : The Moonlight – The Quintessence of Mind and Meditation was the first presentation in English of a major Tibetan Buddhist work on meditation. This classic guide was composed in the sixteen century by an eminent lama of the Kagyu School and is so comprehensive and practical that it still widely used today as a manual. Divided into two major sections, it presents first the common approach and then the mahamudra approach to tranquility (samatha) and insight (vipasyana) meditation. Mahamudra is the first English translation of a major Tibetan Buddhist presentation of the theory and practice of meditation-a manual detailing the various stages and practices for training the advanced student. The original Tibetan text of nearly 800 pages was composed by Takpo Tashi Namgyal (1512-1587), a great lama and a scholar of the kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. His text is so vast and thorough in scope that it is still the primary source used by living Tibetan meditation masters in instructing their disciples. The first major text representing the meditational methods of both mahayana and vajrayana Buddhism to appear in English, Mahamudra is an invaluable guide for advanced students, scholars, and Buddhist practitioners. Mahamudra is the first english translation of a major Tibetan Buddhist presentation of the theory and practice of meditation-a manual detailing the various stages and practices for training the advanced student. My Land and My People: Memoirs of The Dalai Lama of Tibet
Timeless Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 8189497774; Softcover; New;
This dignified testament by a great spiritual and temporal leader, driven into exile by Communist China, is one of the most heartbreaking documents ever published. His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet relates the story of his brief, tumultuous reign climaxed by the appalling humiliation and systematic murder of his people by the Chinese. A civilized, compassionate man and a sincere reformer, he writes of the simple Tibetan life into which he was born, and among whom he, as the reincarnation of his predecessor, was discovered and declared Dalai Lama according to his country's ancient customs. During and after the invasion, the Dalai Lama appealed to the United Nations, and the International Commission of Jurists undertook a detailed study of the situation. The horror uncovered by the Commission surpassed sanity and reason, and it is detailed in these pages. My Land and My People is a tragic book. Yet, it is deeply inspiring, for the whole story is told with the gentle forgiving spirit of a Buddhist monk. 114787

Activating Bodhichitta and a Meditation on Compassion (Second Edition)
Paljor Publications/Library of Tibetan Works & Archives; New Delhi, India; 2006; 8186470522; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
There is no more powerful mind than bodhicitta. There is no more joyous mind than bodhicitta. For the accomplishment of one's own ultimate purpose, the awakening mind is supreme, and to accomplish the purpose of all other living beings there is nothing superior to bodhicitta. The awakening mind is the unsurpassable way to collect merit. To purify obstacles bodhicitta is supreme. For protection from interferences bodhicitta is supreme. It is the unique, all-encompassing method. Every kind of ordinary and supra-mundane power can be accomplished through bodhicitta. Thus, it is absolutely precious. Even though we personally may find difficulty in immediate and thorough generation of such a mind, we should at least direct our thoughts towards it. To train our mind in such an ultimately altruistic manner from the very beginning of our practice of Dharma is vitally important.Printed Pages: 77. 103551

Stages of Meditation
Rider Books/TBI; New Delhi, India; 0712629637; Softcover; New;
In STAGES OF MEDITATION, His Holiness offers his highly practical views on the subject of meditation: how to do it, the various different procedures and approaches we can take, what we and others may gain from it. He explains how we can develop a spiritual path in a proper sequence rather than in a scattered, piecemeal fashion. He also shows the importance of building up both method and wisdom, as well as cultivating compassion and 'special insight' as we train our minds. This impressive and stimulating book will not only bring the Dalai Lama - one of the world's most popular and pragmatic spiritual leaders - to a huge new audience but, because so many people round the globe are now practising meditation, from a basis of religious faith or none, this is a work which will doubtless be in print for many years to come. 112916

Beyond Religion
Element/TBI; New Delhi, India; 9789351360803; Softcover; New;
In his bestselling Ethics for a New Millennium, His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. Now, in Beyond Religion: Ethics for a Whole World, the Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere ‘religion wars’, he outlines a system of ethics for our shared world, one that gives full respect to religion. With the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a stirring appeal for what he calls a ‘third way’, a path to an ethical and happy life and to a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect. Beyond Religion is an essential statement from the Dalai Lama, a blueprint for all those who may choose not to identify with a religious tradition, yet still yearn for a life of spiritual fulfilment as they work for a better world. 113104

The Book of Joy
Random House/TBI; New Delhi, India; 178633044X; Hardcover; New; New;
'I want to wish all of you joy—because there is no better gift. Two spiritual masters, the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, share their wisdom in this uplifting book. I promise you, it’s the best $26 you can spend.' Oprah Winfrey Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships – or, as they would say, because of them – they are two of the most joyful people on the planet.In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu travelled to the Dalai Lama’s home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness’s eightieth birthday and to create this book as a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: how do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our times and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final goodbye. 112884

Franz Brentano (1838–1917) led an intellectual revolution that sought to revitalize German-language philosophy and to reverse its post-Kantian direction. His philosophy laid the groundwork for philosophy of science as it came to fruition in the Vienna Circle, and for phenomenology in the work of such figures as his student Edmund Husserl. This volume brings together newly commissioned chapters on his important work in theory of judgement, the reform of syllogistic logic, theory of intentionality, empirical descriptive psychology and phenomenology, theory of knowledge, metaphysics and ontology, value theory, and natural theology. It also offers a critical evaluation of Brentano’s significance in his historical context, and of his impact on contemporary philosophy in both the analytic and the continental traditions. Encyclopedia of Indian Philosophies (Volume 10: Jain Philosophy (Part I))
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8120831691; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The philosophy of Jainism is the subject of a large body of literature, but a great deal of it consists of standard summary reviews that are not sufficiently accurate to bring out the uniqueness of Jain thought. The core thesis of Jain philosophy is that of anekantavada. Such a rendering by itself fails to get to the unique contribution of the Jain position, which is just that every serious account of the world contains elements of truth, but that any single linguistic expression must fail to comprehend all those patially true perspectives or viewpoints, not because those viewpoints are false, but because the complete truth is not consistently expressible in any natural language, since any such expression must necessarily involve contradictions. The Jain position leads to evident problems in assessing any of the philosophical thesis broached by a Jain-are we to take them as truth-claims, or as merely some among an indefinite incompatible ways of looking at the world? If the latter, how can a Jain saint have or gain knowledge-can he grasp collectively all the indefinite number of true theories? And if the former, what happens to the truths presumed to be contained in each of the incompatible alternative viewpoints? Printed Pages: 842. 102132
