Indus Divided: India, Pakistan and the River Basin Dispute
Penguin Books India Pvt. Ltd./Prakash Books; New Delhi, India; 0670089621; Hardcover; New; New;
The Indus Waters Treaty is considered a key example of India–Pakistan cooperation, which had a critical influence on state-making in both countries. Indus Divided reveals the importance of the Indus Basin river system, and thus control over it, for Indian and Pakistani claims to sovereignty after South Asia’s partition in 1947. Based on new research in India, Pakistan, the United States and United Kingdom, this book places the Indus dispute, for the first time, in the context of decolonization and Cold War-era development politics. It examines the discord at local, national and international levels, arguing that we can only explain its importance and longevity in light of India and Pakistan’s state-building initiatives after independence. India Express: The Future of a New Superpower
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0670082341; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
India Express is a fast-paced analysis of India’s potential role as ‘Asia’s America’. Daniel Lak has covered the region for two decades and draws on his detailed knowledge of the country’s lesser-known byways to bring together a complex canvas of interviews, anecdotes, statistics and history. From the ghats of Varanasi to the campus of IIT Kharagpur to a polling booth in rural Bihar, Lak argues that India’s plural democracy, its rule of law, entrepreneurial talent and military might are together fashioning a country that is globally respected and increasingly influential. What marks this book out from the many voices proclaiming India’s nascent superpower status is Lak’s clear-sighted grasp of the agents and forces of change in the country today. Acknowledging India’s uninterrupted engagement with democracy as unique in the region, the author points out that the growing political heft of the urban middle classes, linked to a historic strengthening of liberal institutions in the country, is part of a process whereby key blocs of voters exchange their political support for government patronage. Coalition governments—a widely accepted sign of democratic maturity—are both a testament to Indian political pragmatism and a de-facto devolution of central authority in a country that has struggled for most of its independent existence with an imbalance of power among centre, states and communities. Mantras of Change: Reporting India in a Time of Flux
Penguin/Viking; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0-67-005826-5; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
Daniel Lak’s foray into writing a book on India started with a non-image. When, towards the end of his three-year stint as a BBC correspondent in India, he was accused by a young university student of portraying stereotypical images of the country in his report—bullock carts, cows ambling in the streets, snake charmers surrounded by enthralled spectators—he was completely taken aback. This got him questioning the images of India portrayed by the media, especially the Western media. Mantras of Change: Reporting India in a Time of Flux brings to the fore the face of a new India, a country that is in a constant and prolonged state of social and economic ferment, largely driven by the aspirations of people at every level, fuelled by the many forces that are beyond the control of the government or the increasingly powerful private sector. Bullock carts and snake charmers are deliberately set aside as Lak offers a glimpse of life in changing India based on his travels and encounters with people along the way. Witty and provocative, the essays talk about the information technology boom and its impact, the sexual revolution, environmental degradation, the breakdown of family structures and, of course, poverty and caste. In a series of sharply drawn portraits, the book introduces us to a policeman working in death squads, Hindu priests striving to save the environment, HIV-positive women dying a dignified death, old soldiers from the opposite sides of intractable conflicts showing genuine affection for each other, and several sexual advice counsellors. Above all, Mantras of Change is an effort to share with the readers Lak’s idea of India and his love affair with a glorious and perplexing land.Printed Pages: 272. 011592

The Torn Veil (Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series: 139)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2006; 052187064X; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
Daniel M. Gurtner examines the meaning of the rending of the veil at the death of Jesus in Matthew 27:51a by considering the functions of the veil in the Old Testament and its symbolism in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism. Gurtner incorporates these elements into a compositional exegesis of the rending text in Matthew. He concludes that the rending of the veil is an apocalyptic assertion like the opening of heaven revealing, in part, end-time images drawn from Ezekiel 37. Moreover, when the veil is torn Matthew depicts the cessation of its function, articulating the atoning role of Christ's death which gives access to God not simply in the sense of entering the Holy of Holies (as in Hebrews), but in trademark Matthean Emmanuel Christology: ‘God with us’. This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel. • Allows readers to consider the historical and literary origins of the veil motif • Considers the symbolism of the rending of the veil with particular reference to other Jewish texts from antiquity • Examines the rending of the veil in its particular Matthean context Contents 1. Introduction; 2. Veils in the Old Testament; 3. Functionality and identity in the ‘veil of the temple’; 4. The veil in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism; 5. Matthew’s temple and Jesus’ death: hermeneutical keys to the rending of the veil; 6. Analysis of the Matthean velum scissum pericope; 7. Conclusion: Matthew’s velum scissum - retrospect and prospect. Filing Religion: State, Hinduism, and Courts of Law
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0199463794; Hardcover; New; New;
The Indian Constitution posits a separation between a secular domain that the state regulates and a religious domain in which it should not interfere. However, defining the separation between the two has proved contentious—the state is directly involved in the administration of several religious institutions and the courts are regularly asked to decide on rights linked to religious functions and bodies. Such decisions contribute to (re)defining the religious categories and practices. This volume explores how the apparently ‘technical’-legalistic action taking place in the courts of law significantly shapes the place that Hinduism occupies in Indian and Nepalese societies, perhaps even more so than the ideology of any political party. The approach developed in this volume is resolutely historical and anthropological. It considers law as part of social, religious, and political dynamics. The volume does not deal as much with politics of secularism in general, as with how courts deal in practice with Hinduism and how it contributes to shaping contemporary Hinduism. Locating India's Intelligence Agencies in a Democratic Framework
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380502731; First Edition; Softcover; New;
India’s internal and external intelligence agencies—the Intelligence Bureau and the Research and Analysis Wing, respectively—carry out numerous operations ranging from counter-terrorism and tackling separatist movements to critical infrastructure protection: all without any statutory charter in place empowering them to do so. In addition, we have the National Technical Research Organization, modeled on the USA’s National Security Agency, set up as an intelligence-gathering agency in 2004. With the rising threat to national security comes the need for the strongest, most efficient intelligence framework possible—provided it remains grounded in a sphere of legality.Taking lapses of security, efficiency, and privacy as points of concern, this monograph begins by making a case for crafting an oversight framework for India’s intelligence agencies. Examining statutory frameworks in other jurisdictions in detail, it goes on to analyse best practices and insights from legislations across the world to make recommendations for the kind of structure most suitable for India.Printed Pages: 72. 104373

Child Maltreatment: Theory and Research on the Causes and Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521364558; First Edition; Hard Cover; As New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This important new volume provides a comprehensive account of the causes and consequences of child maltreatment from a developmental perspective. The chapters in the volume offer an historical and definitional context for future studies: What constitutes physical, sexual, and emotional abuse? What is child neglect and how has its definition changed over time? Why has the theory of the intergenerational transmission of maltreatment been overstated for so long? The heart of the volume lies in its careful description of well controlled research on the impact of maltreatment on the developmental process. Specific chapters address the effects of maltreatment on congitive, linguistic, social, and emotional development. Special attention is paid to age-specific deficits in social interaction, to parent-child interaction and attachment in the early years, and to peer relationships during later childhood and adolescence. The psychology of abusive and neglecting parents is also addressed. Who are the maltreating parents and how are they different from comparison parents? Creating Adaptive Policies: A Guide for Policymaking in an Uncertain World
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8132101472; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Today’s policy-maker has a tough job to do. Policies that cannot perform effectively under today’s complex, dynamic and uncertain conditions run the risk of not achieving their intended purpose. Instead of helping, they may actually hinder the ability of individuals, communities and businesses to cope with and adapt to change. Creating Adaptive Policies: A Guide for Policy-making in an Uncertain World is the very first book to distill the principles of complex adaptive systems and adaptive management into practical guidance for policy-makers. It describes the concept of adaptive policy-making and presents seven tools for developing such policies. Based on hundreds of interviews with people impacted by policy and research of over a dozen policy case studies, this book serves as a pragmatic guide for policy-makers by elaborating these seven tools. It will be an invaluable information resource for technical policy-makers, politicians and their advisors, as well as for those studying politics and international relations. Challenging the Indian Medical Heritage
Foundation Books in association with Centre for Environment Education; New Delhi, India; 8175961872; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
It is a well-known fact that throughtout our country there exists numerous folk traditions of local health care in all walks of life. There are two schematically distinguished of health in India. One refers to the written traditions of the great classical systems of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and the other one is orally transmitted folk practices, which lacks proper documentation. These traditional practices deal with a number of basic health techniques like treatment of common ailments and home remedies. In some communities there also exist special traditions like bone setting, visha chikitsa, treatment for certain chronic ailments, diagnostic methods such as naadi pareeksha. It is a fact that inspite of their great potential the paramparas are today in a weakened state. It is however, our conviction that a revitalization of these traditions can be brought about by encouraging an interaction of these traditions with the organized Indian system of medicine. The book is an attempt to introduce to the lay reader the medical traditions that exist in India. This attempt is along two lines. The first path is a general introduction to the codified system of medicine. It includes their recent history and their theoretical foundations. Examining one such system, Ayurveda, will do this. The second path addresses the realization that medical traditions are being ignored and that urgent action is called for to counteract this. The latter part of this book describes the work being done to document and revitalize the folk medical tradition. Contents Section I : Perspectives on Indian Medical Heritage Prologue 1. Community-based Oral Health Traditions in Rural India 2. Alternative Macro Visions 3. The Materia Medica of Ayurveda 4. Building A Bridge Between Local Health Cultures and Codified Traditions 5. Contemporary History Section II: Accounts of Living Health Traditions 1. Documentation and Revitalising Local Health Traditions 2. A Participatory Approach in Assessing Health Traditions 3. Health at Our Doorstep 4. Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8178359413; Hardcover; New; New;
In spite of all the efforts, the population of India is increasing day by day. Many of the cultivable lands have been turned in erecting buildings, highways. This resulted in shortage of food grains against increasing number of consumers, the area of lands being the same, rather lesser that before. Also there is a limit of increasing production and productivity of food material by using manures and fertilizers. If we take up this problem by supplementing or supplanting with fruits and vegetables, there is no reason why one must feel hungry. Further we are passing our days in the era of environmental pollution even in Delhi, Allahabad, Maharashtra and other states. Use of polythene, throwing garbage here and there, burning thse along road sides, smoking, drinking, chewing tobacco, gutka, dusty roads and foot paths, smoke and poisonous gases emitted by factories, tempos and buses make the environment polluted. Water pollution, Noise pollution, ripening of fruits by use of calcium carbide-all these are health hazards. Efforts have been made to deal all these in the book “Horticulture and Environment.Printed Pages: 302. 106250

Unfinished Gestures: Devadasis, Memory, and Modernity in South India
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; Softcover; New;
Unfinished Gestures presents the social and cultural history of courtesans in South India who are generally called devadasis, focusing on their encounters with colonial modernity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Following a hundred years of vociferous social reform, including a 1947 law that criminalized their lifestyles, the women in devadasi communities contend with severe social stigma and economic and cultural disenfranchisement. Adroitly combining ethnographic fieldwork with historical research, Davesh Soneji provides a comprehensive portrait of these marginalized women and unsettles received ideas about relations among them, the aesthetic roots of their performances, and the political efficacy of social reform in their communities.Printed Pages: 328. 101786

Conservation in Africa: People, Policies and Practice
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 052134199X; First Edition; Hard Cover; Fine; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This book provides a new inter-disciplinary look at the practice and policies of conservation in Africa. Bringing together social scientists, anthropologists and historians with biologists for the first time, the book sheds some light on the previously neglected but critically important social aspects of conservation thinking. To date conservation has been very much the domain of the biologist, but the current ecological crisis in Africa and the failure of orthodox conservation policies demand a radical new appraisal of conventional practices. This new approach to conservation, the book argues, cannot deal simply with the survival of species and habitats, for the future of African wildlife is intimately tied to the future of African rural communities. Conservation must form an integral part of future policies for human development. The book emphasises this urgent need for a complementary rather than a competitive approach. It covers a wide range of topics important to this new approach, from wildlife management to soil conservation and from the Cape in the nineteenth century to Ethiopia in the 1980s. It is essential reading for all those concerned about people and conservation in Africa. What is different and specific about this book? - There is a balance between socio-cultural and technical aspects and there is a balance between qualitative and quantitative aspects – project management is seen as both an art and a science. - It provides an information systems orientation for project management: neither information technology oriented on the one side nor production and operations oriented on the other, but of application to both within an organizational-wide view. - It stresses information systems as a whole, not just software development – no project is successful if only software aspects are considered. - It gives a truly international view of the domain – examples and experiences from different parts of the world add richness as well as context to the material. Globalization has ensured that most projects take on an international dimension. - The book provides a coherent explanation of the concerns of the project manager as the project develops through the project life cycle – it does not follow a ‘kitchen sink approach’. - Each chapter has the following consistent structure: introduction and outline, an exhibit, the main text with examples, chapter summary, exercises, discussion questions, interview with project manager and appendix – this structure provides coherence and consistency. - The exhibit, interview and appendix contain real-world examples, experiences, case studies, discussion material, software descriptions and professional codes – these provide material for class discussion and group work. - The material has been used on our courses in the United States, Europe and Australia, given to practitioners as well as students (both undergraduate and postgraduate) – it has been well tested as part of our own project management the material in this text has been proven successful through repeated use in courses in the United States, Europe, and Australia, by practitioners as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students. Reading the New Nietzsche: The Birth of Tradegy, The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and on the Genealogy of Morals
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8120830571; Hardcover; New; New;
In this long awaited volume, David B. Allison argues for a "generous" approach to Nietzsche`s writings and provides comprehensive analyses of Nietzsche`s The Birth of Tragedy, The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and On the Genealogy of Morals. Unique among other books on Nietzsche, Allison`s text includes individual chapters devoted to Nietzsche`s principal works. Historically oriented and continentally informed, Allison`s readings draw on French and German thinkers such as Heidegger, Bataille, Derrida, Birault, and Deleuze, while explicitly resisting the use of jargon that frequently characterizes those approaches. Reading the New Nietzsche is an outstanding resource for those reading Nietzsche for the first time as well as for those who wish to know him better.Printed Pages: 332 102206

He was one of America's most promising football stars until, aged twenty-years-old, he was arrested and convicted for the murder of his parents just as he was due to begin a very lucrative contract with the NFL.When Amos Decker, newly appointed special agent with the FBI, hears the news that Melvin was saved in the final seconds before his execution because someone has confessed to the killings, he persuades his boss to allow him to carry out an investigation into the Mars murders.There are facts about the case which don't add up, and as the investigation deepens, Decker and his team uncover layer upon layer of lies and deception which are rooted at a time in American history which most would rather forget, but some seem keen to remember. 108432
