Khayala Vocalism: Continuity Within Change (New Vistas in Indian Performing Arts:11)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8124604827; First Edition; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Khayala Vocalism: Continuity Within Change presents stylistic perspectives on the music of nineteen modern and contemporary Khayala vocalists, representing various legacies which have guided vocal music for about 200 years. The book is the result of over five years of research, involving the painstaking analysis of over 500 recordings spanning almost a hundred years of Khayala vocalism. The nineteen vocalists are classified into five stylistic legacies, based on their history of tutelage and the stylistic tendencies evident in their music: Agra legacy, Gwalior-Agra confluence, Jaipur-Atrauli legacy, Kairana legacy, and Patiala legacy. Written by an author of impeccable credentials as a musician, researcher and writer, the book contains seven sections. While the first section serves as an introduction to the Khayala genre and to the various Gharanas, the last presents an annexure containing the various Khayala forms, a glossary of non-English terms rendered in italics, and an index. The intervening five sections deal with the history and stylistics of the five legacies and the music of the vocalists belonging to them. The book makes complex musicological concepts accessible to non-academic readers and contributes significantly to widening the understanding of contemporary trends in Khayala vocalism. Hindustani Music Today
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8124606250; First Edition; Softcover; New; 19 x 25 Cm
Stating that Hindustani music should be rightly termed “Art music” and not “classical music”, the book begins by discussing the features of Art music and presents an approach to appreciating Hindustani music. It provides a detailed understanding of the components of the raga experience in Hindustani music, including their time theory and the role of Gharanas of the musical tradition. It deals with genres of raga-based vocal music which have been performed over the last five centuries: Dhrupad, which has its moorings in devotional music; Khayal vocalism shaped by Sufi influences; the thumree, which originated as an accompaniment to the Kathak dance; and the tappa, adapted from the songs of camel drivers in the north-west frontier. It takes up the use of instruments in Hindustani music, especially the Rudra Veena, Sitar, Surbahar, Sarod, Santoor, the Shehnai, Pakhawaj, the Hawaiian Guitar and many others, giving an account of their origin, performing styles and lineages relating to them. Throughout, the emphasis is on contemporary trends in Hindustani music and its prospects in the future. It mentions the significant practitioners of Hindustani music, both vocal and instrumental. The volume will interest lovers of Indian music and also scholars who want to have a greater understanding of its traditions, its contemporary appeal and trends in practice.Printed Pages: 150 with sveral b/w illustrations. 100350

The Raga-ness of Ragas: Ragas Beyond the Grammar
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608350; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book is a systematic and contemporary exploration of the uniquely Indian phenomenon of raga, which forms the foundation of the musical culture of India. Maestros speak with total conviction of a raga as having a personality. A raga must therefore be viewed not only as the governing authority of musical performance, but also as an archetype pregnant with cultural meaning. The exploration of raga-ness, therefore, can begin with the grammatical coordinates of ragas, but cannot stop there. This book attempts to extend the scope of the enquiry to cover several other facets of ragas examining the manner in which they participate in the cultural process. As such, this book provides valuable insights to scholars, researchers, connoisseurs, as well as performing musicians.Written by an author of established credentials as a musician, researcher and writer with three acclaimed works to his credit, this book explores the subject through conceptual essays in Part I, and case studies of fifty-one ragas in Part II. The case studies of ragas are supported with references to authoritative texts and reviews of recordings by recent and contemporary maestros. Written in the author's lucid and masterly style, this book makes complex musicological concepts accessible to non-academic readers, and contributes significantly to widening the understanding of the role of ragas in the musical culture. China Russia India Relations in 21st Century
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8174791558; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book explores how three Eurasian powers - Russia, India and China can make 21st century an Asian century. Russia with a territory of more than 17 million sq km is the world's largest country while China with more than 1.3 billion people is the most populous country in the world. Both countries share boundary running into 7500 km., the largest in the world. Therefore the relations between the two countries always had a strong impact on the course of regional and global politics. India being the world’s largest functioning democracy and one of the ten fastest growing economy in the world is an another important emerging power in the world.The former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, proposed a Russia-India-China strategic triangle, during his visit in December 1998, which envisaged closer strategic cooperation among these three countries. The multi-ethnic and multi-cultural societies of Russia, India and China have faced increasing pressure from the forces that seek to destroy their pluralistic societies. In India infiltration in Kargil was the culmination of years of infiltrations and terrorist activities. The terrorists have also attacked the highest symbol of Indian democracy, the Parliament. Russia's long bleeding problem of Chechnya has been further aggravated with the Western and US media and human right groups’ intervention in the name of human rights violations. China is facing potential threat of secession in its Xinjiang province by Islamic extremists who are engaged with continuous low level warfare with Chinese authorities. There is growing feeling among the three countries that US alone should not set the agenda of global war against terror. The experience of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan, and Egypt also shows that the US policies can leave a bigger mess in the region, the effect of which has to be borne by neighboring countries.Printed Pages: 362. 104132

Atreyasiksa: A Siksa of the Taittiriya School
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608237; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Atreyashiksha is one of the Shiksha texts of the Krishna-Yajurveda, Taittiriya school. This text has been critically edited and translated consulting two palm-leaf manuscripts which are currently the only discovered manuscripts of this text in public libraries. Shiksha texts deal with phonetics and phonology of the Vedas and the method of proper pronunciation and recitation. The Atreyashiksha is well-structured in terms of arranging its topics of discussion. When compared to the other Shikshas of the Taittiriya school, the Atreyashiksha, in keeping its focus on the discussion on the different methods of Vedic recitation, namely, word-reading (padapatha), sequential reading (kramapatha), tangled reading (jatapatha) and the five varieties of the reading of the phonic sequences (varnakramas), holds a unique position in the corpus of the Shiksha literature. A close reading of the text shows that the main aim of the text is to explain the practical aspects of the different ways of Vedic recitation, in whose connection it describes the theoretical elements of Shiksha too. The book, therefore, serves as a practical guidebook to Vedic reciters who recite the above-mentioned readings of the Taittiriya Krishna-Yajurveda along with the continuous reading. While describing the methods of recitation, the Atreyashiksha gives enough emphasis on the theoretical nuances. The phonological rules, most of which are expressed in the Taittiriya Pratishakhya, are also illustrated in this text. This book consists of a detailed introduction, the critically edited text in Devanagari script, its Roman transliteration and an authentic English translation.Printed Pages: 279. 100546

Narratives in Society: A Performer-Centered Study of Narration (Folklore Fellows Communications 255)
Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia (Academia Scientiarum Fennica)/Bookstore Tiedekirja; Helsinki, Finland; 1995; 9514107489; Hardcover; New; New;
What distinguishes folklorists from representatives of related disciplines who do similar things – go to the field, collect intentional data and subject them to rigorous analysis and interpretation – for diverse disciplinary purposes? Folklorists are unique in their study of folklore for its own sake, as the folk creates, adapts, recreates stories, songs, dances and proverbs. The folklorist observes personal creativity as individuals shape traditional materials, assisted by a critical audience and sanctioned by a tradition-minded community.The twenty essays in this book, divided into four sections, represent the author’s ideas, theories and methodological approaches to folk narrative. The first makes the case for narrator-orientation as field-ethnography-based humanistic approach; the second introduces the narrator’s personality and Weltanschauung as key to his/her motivation and art; the third discusses the intricacies and dynamics of story-transmissions and dissemination; and the fourth presents case studies that illustrate Linda Dégh’s method of analysis of narrative performance. She focuses on individual creators of variants that link up in processes of narrative development leading to dissemination, and the formation of types and subtypes. She shows how much more this method can reveal of the nature of folklore. Printed Pages: 401. 113890

The Greeks in India: A Survey in Philosophical Understanding
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2000; 8121509211; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
This book relates to the history of the ideological presence of the Greeks in India. Unlike the previous works, which have been focused on particular historical periods, the present study aims to present the literary and religio-philosophic character of the Greeks in India as they interact with the Indians and the Indian culture from the earliest times to the present. It includes prehistoric, mythical and the first historically attested accounts of contact, a critical review of the Oriental Origin theory and travels of the Greek Philosophers who are commonly thought to have visited or to have been influenced by India, the meeting of Alexander with the Indian Gymnosophists, the inter-religious contacts that took place between the two peoples during the reign of the Indo-Greek kingdoms in Bactria and the Medieval Ages, and a critical study of the identity of the Yavanas as they occur in Indian texts and inscriptions. The book provides further information on the life and work of the first and foremost Greek Indologist Demetrios Galanos, a record of Indological studies in Greece, and reviews on the works made by contemporary Greek scholars and diplomatic representatives in India. The Art of War: The Denma Translation
Shambhala Publication/TBI; New Delhi, India; 2002; 1570629048; Softcover; New;
Previous translations of The Art of War have presented Sun Tzu's classic from the point of view of military strategy, Chinese history, or Taoist philosophy. This translation—accompanied by the translators' in-depth essays and illuminating line-by-line commentary—offers a fresh perspective on this ancient Chinese text. Here, Sun Tzu's strategic principles of warfare (based as they were on the fundamental insights of the Chinese spiritual and philosophical tradition) are seen as universally relevant—the foundation for personal transformation and the creation of an enlightened society.In this translation of The Art of War, Sun Tzu's teachings are revealed in an entirely new light.War is any situation that demands hard choices about creation and destruction, life or death.The state is the system in which we live—our household, our culture or society, or our own mind.Defense ensures the integrity of our boundaries and allows life to flourish within them.Force is the energy of concentrated action.Victory lies in bringing others around to embracing a larger view—one that includes their own—without ever going to battle. The Brahui Language: An Old Dravidian Language Spoken In Parts of Baluchistan and Sind, Volume 1
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121201632; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Brahui is a language, Dravidian in structure but polyglot in vocabulary, spoken in some parts of Baluchistan and Sind, now in Pakistan. The existence of the language and its speakers in that region has always posed a problem, not yet solved, to both the philologists and the ethnologists. The theory that the Brahuis are the rearguards or the vanguards of a Dravidian migration from North to South or South to North has now been abandoned. Nevertheless, their language is very important and deserves a serious study, more so for its isolation. The present work is a complete survey of this difficult and obscure language. The work is in three parts, viz. (i) Introduction and grammar, (ii) The Brahui problem, and (iii) Itymological vocabulary. In the introduction, The Author has discussed, at great length, various theories and hypotheses about the origin and migration of the Brahuis, the structure and composition of the Brahui language and its relation to Dravidian. Loan words and other borrowings from surrounding languages have been ably treated. The grammar is quite elaborate and comprehensive. All the elements of the language, e.g. the substantives, the adjectives, the numerals, the pronouns, the verbs, etc. have been fully analysed. Part two presents a comparative study of the Brahui language problem chiefly from philological point of view, taking the current Dravidian languages into consideration. The section on the admixture of the Brahui vocabulary is very interesting, none the less the hypotheses of the author on the relation of the Brahuis with the Indus valley civilization. Part three contains an etymological vocabulary which not only shows the Etymology of words and gives their meanings in English but also provides with numerous examples from the actual speech.Printed Pages: 237. 105648

Divorce Discourses: A Biblical Dilemma
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8180693880; Hardcover; New; New;
The main aim of this book is to try and reconcile the apparently irreconcilable differences between the Biblical texts that allow divorce and those that prohibit divorce. Although, the New Testament references to divorce were ambiguous enough to prevent a rapid consensus within the church that divorce was wholly unacceptable, it is notable that the Christian debate for and against divorce drew on both texts from the Old as well as the New Testament. This book analyses the social and religious crisis faced by Ezra and Nehemiah, bringing about an understanding of why they mandated the Israelite men to forcefully divorce the foreign women they had married. It focuses on a provisional understanding of divorce in the Ancient Israelite Society, analysing what motivations influenced their ethical systems. Against this background, it analyses Jesus response to the Pharisees in the Synoptic Gospels. Printed Pages: 156. 112062

Decipherment of Harappan Script, 2 Vols
Pratibha Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2011; 8177022563; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The book Decipherment of Harappan Script is the result from an interest which the author developed in Harappan Archaeology since last 24 years during his stay in Institute of Archaeology London and later on in National Museum New Delhi where he was holding charge of Harappan material. Proto Dravidian and earliest Aryan were present in Harappan population. The author concluded Harappan script was Proto Brahmi and their languages were Proto-Dravidian Brahui and Laukik Sanskrit. The more positive chapter is identification of Harappan script sign. This book has 27 papers on Harappan script. The author contradicted pre conceived idea of only Dravidian language theory of Harappan. He prefers Name of South Asian civilization for this earliest Harappan civilization of South Asia. A unique contribution of the author is identification of Inscribed double headed terracotta Siva from Kalibangan. Which has three sign in proto-Brahmi script and author read these sign as f'koe~ or Ýivam.Printed Pages: 101305

Visions of Past Glory: Nationalism and the Construction of Early Finnish History
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2006; 9517467877; New;
This study presents the case for how the conceptions of a distant, glorious past have been advanced and actively developed within the national project of constructing a modern ethnicity of Finnishness. Accordingly, a conception of an original ancient greatness was paramount for the nationalist movements in both the Grand Duchy and the early Republic of Finland. The author traces the construction of a Finnish Great Myth of National Origins from the 16th century until the end of the Second World War, and provides richly illustrated examples of how the process of nation-building influenced and amplified the deep historical core of the emerging Finnish national consciousness.
