Sculptures from Punjab: Iconography and Style
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8173054142; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
Punjab has almost been a terra incognita for long with regard to the sculptural art and not much is known even now except 57 railing pillars of Sanghol published by the National Museum, New Delhi. The remaining 60 pieces, some of which are aesthetically equally important, and some stray finds made now and then, have not received due attention which they deserved. Quite a few of the elegant and artistic sculptures have even been pilfered and are not traceable now. An effort has been made here to put everything together and present a coherent picture to the readers. Images published here throw fresh light on the culture, ethnology, trade, art and religious history of the region which have further been substantiated by literary, numismatic and epigraphic evidence. The Kushana railing pillars of Sanghol are a class by themselves and so are the Gupta terracottas from Ropar, Sanghol, Janer and Zahura. Medieval sculptures from Velore, Khanpur, Majhur, Janer, Dholbaha and other sites provide rare glimpses of the artistic, aesthetic and iconographic achievements of the artists. Metal images from Ropar, Bhudan, Sunam, Kharar and Ferozepur, mostly published for the first time, corroborate the evidence of marble images and throw new light on the impact and missionary activities of the Jaina monks from Rajasthan in Punjab. Stylistic and iconographic study of sculptures further reveals influence from Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Unfinished images from Dholbaha reveal that it was a great centre of art during the medieval period. Karttikeya with Krittikas from Sanghol; Harihara, Siva with goose, Siva's head with long jata-juta and the Ramayana panel from Dholbaha; Nataraja from Bathinda; Mukha-Linga from Sultanpur Lodi; Uma-Mahesvara from Ghanauli; Vaikuntha-Lakshmi from Lalru; and Jaina figures from Bathinda, Bhudan, Ferozepur, Ropar and Sunam show interesting iconographical innovations. With 62 sketches and 338 plates, Sculptures from Punjab is the first comprehensive work on the subject resulting from author's sustained interest and study for more than the last four decades. Printed Pages: 244 with 62 figures & maps & 338 halftone illustrations. 100146

Jaina Bronzes From Hansi
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8173052344; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
"Haryana has been a terra incognita as far as the beginning of Jainism and Jaina art are concerned. The hoard of Jaina bronzes from Hansi in district Hisar, discovered just accidentally in February 1982, which has remained unpublished all these years, thus, forms an important discovery which throws very welcome light on the beginnings of Jainism in this northern state adjoining Delhi. It provides the earliest archaeological evidence of the prevalence of Jainism in Haryana as also of the bronze art of the region. The present hoard of fifty-eight bronze images belonging to the Svetambara and Digambara sects of the Jainas with two Buddhist images of bhumisparsa Buddha and Avalokitesvara Padmapani throws very significant light on the religious and art history of the region. The images belong to eighth through tenth centuries and were probably buried together at the time of the siege of the city towards the close of AD 1037. Many of the images show coatings and traces of sandal paste still sticking to them indicating thereby that they were under worship at the time of their burial. Another interesting fact is that the Svetambaras, Digambaras and the Buddhists joined together to bury these icons in one cauldron betraying the religious harmony that may have been prevailing at Hansi at that time. The images are not real bronzes but made of different alloys. They also betray the techniques of solid and hollow casting, welding, hammering, engraving on sheets, etc. to create them. The contents of the hoard reveal that Parsvanatha was the most popular tirthankara at Hansi followed by Mahavira, Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), Chandraprabha and Mallinatha. This hoard has provided us the first metallic image of female Mallinatha, the earliest and the only known example of the parents of the Jina in metal, and early examples of the metallic Sarvatobhadrikas. Influence from Rajasthan and Gujarat is also discernible in their technique and iconography. The present book deals with all these aspects of the metal images and brings out their religious, cultural and art-historical importance." Cultural History from the Vayu Purana
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1973; 8120820851; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present book attempts to supplement the work of Pargiter on the Cultural plane. Pargiter was concerned with the dynastic records of the Puranic texts while this book aims to interpret "cultural history" from the Vayu Purana. The work is divided into ten chapters arranged systematically. The first five chapters contain facts of intellectual culture and the last five of material culture. The presentation of material has involved a great deal of translation and interpretation of the Puranic text. The work has two appendices and a critical introduction. Appendix A identifies the places and tribes. Appendix B describes the centres of pilgrimage. Introduction surveys the previous research on the Puranas, on the Vayu particularly. It discusses the antiquity of the Vayu, its value for the cultural history and the method followed in the present investigation. It also gives an outline of political history as found in the Vayu Purana. This book is valuable not only for Indian Culture, but also for a critical edition of Vayu, and consequently of other Purana material.Printed Pages: 365. 102053

Public Institutions in India: Performance and Design
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0195689666; Softcover; New;
This volume analytically assesses the design, performance, and adaptability of the principal institutions of governance in India and their critical role in a democratic polity. It is axiomatic that societies are well governed and well organized to the extent that their public institutions can adequately manage the demands imposed on them. In India, it is commonly held that a modest record in development and governance is explained by the somewhat limited utility of many public institutions. The volume looks at the Parliament, Presidency, institutions of internal accountability, the Judiciary, Police, and the Civil Service in addition to economic institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, as also several regulatory bodies, paying special attention to the variables like autonomy, accountability, and information-sharing that have affected the perf ormance of different institutions across time. Also included are essays that explore the critical role played by institutions in enhancing economic performance, strengthening federalism, and deepening the democratic impulse in India. In addition, they look at how electoral uncertainty has given a new lease of life to `referee institutions` like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. Further, the volume looks at the variations in institutional performance of the Indian state across time, and evaluates if the state has the capacity to adapt to a changing environment. Navigating the Labyrinth: Perspectives on India’s Higher Education
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789386296993; Hardcover; New; New;
In India, few things open faster than colleges, but few sectors reform more slowly than higher education. Demographic changes, economic growth and integration into the global economy, the rising demand for higher education, and the increase in the number of private colleges have led to a massive expansion in Indian higher education. While challenges of access and cost have been long-standing, much of this expansion has been of dubious quality, the result of sustained and deep regulatory and governance failures.This book analyses these and other complex challenges facing higher education in India, and suggests possible solutions to some of them. The contributors highlight a range of issues facing higher education today, through a deeply moving account of the decline of a college in north Bihar; discussions on the various types of post-secondary educational institutions—the research university, teaching colleges, and vocational training institutes; initiatives, such as community colleges, to address the problem of skill development in India; and the financing and governance of higher education in India. The book combines diverse methodologies: ethnography of institutions, case studies and data-based work, to present a complex landscape.These critical insights into higher education in India will be useful to scholars and researchers in education, political science, sociology, and public policy. Public Institutions in India: Performance and Design
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195667263; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The modern state secures legitimacy and carries out its tasks of governance and development through a diverse range of institutions. In addition, they look at how electoral uncertainty has given a new lease of life to 'referee institutions' like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. Further, the volume looks at the variations in institutional performance of the Indian state across time, and evaluates if the state has the capacity to adapt to a changing environment. Providing detailed and original insights into the working of institutions and assessing the manner in which they assist, strengthen, thwart, manipulate, and subvert each other, this unique volume will be of interest to a scholarly audience in political science, public administration, and political sociology in addition to bureaucrats and policy planners, journalists, activists, and an informed general audi ence. The Yajurveda: Sanskrit text with English Translation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8121502942; Seventh Impression; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The Vedas are the foundation on which the imposing Hindu religious edifice is built. The Yajurveda contains hymns taken from the older Rigveda and prose passages which are new. The hymns display considerable deviation from the original Rigvedic text. It can be called a priestly manual; for it lays down rules for the performance of various sacrifices. It has two samhitas or a collection of hymns of mantras; these are Taittiriya Samhita and Vajasaneya Samhita, popularly known as Black and White Yajur respectively. The subject-matter of both the samhitas is almost the same, though the arrangement is somewhat different. Of the two the Vajasaneya Samhita is planned in a more systematic and orderly manner than the other. It also contains some texts which are not found in the Taittiriya Samhita. This translation of Yajurveda by Devi Chand is based upon Swami Dayanand's interpretation. The translator has provided references in the footnotes to the different views of other scholars. To bring home to the common man the message of the Yajurveda, he has spared no pains to remove all obscurities inherent in the old form of Sanskrit which was in vogue three thousand years ago. The introduction and the index are added to help the reader. Everyone interested in the Vedas will find this book indispensable. Printed Pages: 480. 035393

The Atharvaveda: Sanskrit text with English Translation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121501725; Fifth Edition; Cloth; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Are the Vedas three or four in number? The Western scholars basing their arguments on the Purusasukta and the word abhicara meaning sorcery and charms have concluded that the Vedas are three and Atharvaveda does not belong to the main body as it deals with black magic. This conclusion is wrong; for, the Atharvaveda deals with all those evils that have plagued mankind from the dawn of creation and suggests remedies in the form of medicines and prayers. From the point of view usefulness, the Atharvaveda is the best for man, as it has prayers for his well-being. Devi Chand's translation is based on Swami Dayanand's interpretation. He has also made use of the commentaries of eminent Indian and foreign Vedic scholars. He has spared no pains to bring home the message of the Atharvaveda to contemporary man. The notes, index and the introduction adds to the value of this book. All those interested to find solutions to the myriad problems that affect them everyday shall find this book highly useful. The Samaveda: Sanskrit text with English Translation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121501997; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The verses of Samaveda, all except 78, are taken from the Rgveda. They are arranged in a sequence different from that of the Rgveda and divided into two parts. The first part, called Purvarcika has 589 verses; the second, called Uttararcika, has 1225 stanzas. The hymns are invocation addressed to Soma, Agni and Indra meant for chanting by Udgatr priests at Soma sacrifices and not devoted chiefly to the worship of Indra and who has to befuddle himself with Soma in order to slay demons as a reputed scholar put it. Due to its special reference to Pitrs or deceased forefathers, the sounds of the Samans are considered by some as impure. This edition of Samaveda, a translation by Devi Chand, is based on the exposition of Swami Dayanand. The translator has furnished references in the footnotes to different interpretations of Indian and foreign scholars. An introduction and glossary-cum index are added for the benefit of those not acquainted with Samaveda. Everyone shall find this an excellent book for a thorough understanding of the Samaveda. As it is said 'To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive and the true success is to labour'. This book is also an outcome of 4/5 years of intense research on the subject. It will help the students of European studies since there is not enough literature available on the subject. It is a good reader for policy makers dealing with the development policy of the European Union. This book is also useful for South Asians associated with Non-government Organisations (NGOs) and voluntary groups, which are working in collaboration with the European Union.Printed Pages: 372. 103217

Breaking Out of the Gree House: Indian Leadership in Times of Environmental Change
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904138; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book traverses several pathways including the basics of science and geography, geopolitics and international relations, strategic and security studies, policy-related and diplomatic dialogues, as well as socio-cultural and economic perspectives in order to bring out a holistic picture of how environmental change has shaped the international system and India’s position in it. The central argument of the book that environmental change can change/is changing geography and in turn can change/is changing international relations has been substantiated by detailed analysis of the drivers of India’s environmental policies, international climate change negotiations, role of state and non-state actors in the international environmental discourse both in theory and practice, and finally the interconnectedness between environmental change and national security. The volume tries to find the right balance between the international scene embodied by the negotiations driven by hardcore economics on the one hand, and the domestic realities of India that steer its climate change policy based on energy security and developmental concerns. The need to address the larger issue of environmental change rather than concentrating on one aspect of it – climate change – to reduce the amount of polarisation that surrounds the global environmental debate especially in the wake of the introduction of the issue at the United Nations Security Council, has been reiterated throughout the work. It contains policy recommendations in terms of methods of adaptation, mitigation, energy management/diversification, enhancement of the role of think tanks as well as diplomatic manoeuvring (principles-based) at the climate change negotiations and other international debates. This area of study is comparatively new in India while the West has been dedicating a significant amount of resources towards research in energy and environmental security for the past two decades. Therefore, one of the objectives of the book is to evolve an Indian perspective on these strategic issues in a Western literature-dominated arena. Though the book brings to light several gaping holes in India’s policy and strategy, it contends that India has a plethora of options and opportunities to not only maintain its own national security but also help the world ‘adapt’ and ‘mitigate’ in times of environmental change.Printed Pages: 256. 104336

7045 Dhanpat Rai Premchand; Translated By Gordon C. Roadarmel; with a New Introduction By Vasudha Dalmia
Godaan (The Gift of a Cow)
Permanent Black; Ranikhet, India; 2005; 8178240408; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14.5 Cms x 22 Cms
Premchand is the most famous Hindi novelist, and Godaan is Premchand’s most celebrated novel. Economic and social conflict in a north Indian village are brilliantly captured in the story of Hori, a poor farmer, and his family’s struggle for survival and self-respect. Hori does everything he can to fulfill his life’s desire: to own a cow, the peasant’s measure of wealth and well-being. Like many Hindus of his time, he believes that making the gift of a cow to a Brahman before he dies will help him achieve salvation. An engaging introduction to India before Independence, Godaan is at once village ethnography, moving human document, and insightful colonial history. Out of print for many years, this translation is regarded as a classic in itself. Printed pages: 470. 031487

Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380828046; Softcover; New;
America is in the grip of a crisis seldom seen in its history. At the domestic level, there is rising unemployment, a recession that seems to have no end, increased drug abuse, failing schools and the breakdown of the family. America's international image is dented by wars, the incidence of terrorism and the failure of the Obama Administration to bring about comprehensive immigration reforms. Dr Dhanpaul Narine writes brilliantly about some of these issues and asks that we think of the ways and means to resolve them. 107251

Rajmata Gayatri Devi - Enduring Grace
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 9 x 7.5 Inches
Rajmata Gayatri Devi...Enduring Grace traces the life and times of one of the most admired icons of modern India. Educated in England, Switzerland and Shantiniketan, Gayatri Devi of Cooch Behar, ‘the princess from the east’, became the third wife of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur. In a tradition-bound set-up, she participated in religious ceremonies, played tennis with male partners, went swimming and horse riding, and did not miss a single season of polo. She also took it upon herself to bring the women of Rajasthan out of the purdah. Vogue voted her as one of the Ten Most Beautiful Women in the World, and with time, the world also witnessed her political courage and her dignified acceptance of life’s vicissitudes—the loss of her only child Jagat, a five-month ordeal in Tihar Jail under Mrs Indira Gandhi’s regime… Rajmata Gayatri Devi is about the continuation of a charmed life despite all odds, about the grace with which a queen of the erstwhile Jaipur State today dons the mantle of the Rajmata or Queen Mother of Jaipur. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dharmendar Kanwar studied at the Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls Public School and went to university in Jaipur. She started her writing career immediately after finishing school and did campus reporting for youth magazines like Hi, Young People’s Newspaper, Junior Statesman and Youth Times. Over the last twenty-five-odd years she has done scripts for television documentaries, been involved in heritage conservation, and contributed stories to almost all the major magazines and newspapers in the country. In the late '80s, she took to travel writing and did a coffee-table book Rajasthan and several booklets/brochures on Rajasthan that won national awards. Dharmendar Kanwar has edited, designed and published Gourmet’s Gateway by Rajmata Gayatri Devi, co-authored Delhi-Agra-Jaipur and written Fifty Years of Rajasthan Police. She was awarded the Best Travel Writer (English) for 1993-94 by the Government of Rajasthan. She is currently working on a book with Rajmata Gayatri Devi, and writing a travel book. Islamist Militancy, National Security and The Pakistan State
Lenin Media Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789385995323; Hardcover; New; New;
The military has monopoly over most important decisions of the state. A part from being the guards in the external security of the nation, it is a well-accepted political institution. The Pakistani Army has the direct control over Pakistan’s nuclear program and foreign policy. The National Command Authority (NCA) was established by the former Chief of the Army Staff and President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, to assure the west that Pakistan’s nuclear weapon is safe. Islamization of the Pakistan Army has been occurring in some form since its birth in 1947. The nation was founded on the unity of a common religion. This religious identity was ingrained in the Army as a way of distinguishing itself from its Hindu counterpart. Officials accomplished this in superficial ways initially. In its early years, the Pakistan Army was very proud of its ability separate religion from the conduct of its internal business. Initially, the Pakistan Army’s actions were characteristic of a capable conventional military force, focused on preservation of the nation. The promotion of officers was based solely on their leadership ability and understanding of the art of war. The book is a study of the political scenario in Pakistan that discusses the intervention of the military in Pakistan’s politics for securing its own interests. Printed Pages: 298. 111866

Himalayan Degradation, Colonial Forestry and Environmental Change in India questions the recent trend of treating environmental and agrarian concerns as two separate domains. In this aspect, the book goes beyond the existing framework of environmental history that focuses only on the study of state policies and debates over redefining rights and examining protests. The author makes a careful study of the larger rural economy, emphasising the changing significance of pastoralism, trade and foraging in the life of the common people. He links forest degradation and environmental change to socioeconomic transformation. The introduction of ‘scientific forestry' in the late nineteenth century transformed forests into a profitable resource for commercial purposes. Forests were overexploited, which resulted in wider ecological changes in the Himalaya . Underlining the centrality of forests and mountain resources to the livelihood and culture of the people of Uttarakhand, the book subjects the notion of sustainable management of forests to close scrutiny. The book will be of interest to historians, environmentalists, policy-makers, social scientists and general readers. Care and Administration of Heritage Monuments in India
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8173054207; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
Certainly remarkable were the British efforts to safeguard the monumental heritage of India. The central administration of the Company’s Government and, subsequently, that of Crown not only showed genuine interest in Indian monuments, but also carried out programmes to safeguard its rich cultural past. For the first time, this book charts the administrative history of the growth and care of heritage monuments: from 1784 to 1904 – the years that are crucial for the development of the history of archaeology in India. The year 1784 saw the establishment of the Asiatic Society of Calcutta that marked the embryonic beginning of a consciousness ‘to explore, document, and preserve’ the ancient heritage of India; while enactment of The Ancient Monuments Preservation Act 1904 saw a culmination of the spirit to ‘dig, discover, and preserve the heritage’. These 120 years witnessed the birth and growth of the ‘archaeological consciousness’ in India and its urge to protect and preserve the monuments by the State leading to a permanent footing of the Archaeological Survey of India. Based exclusively on the archival records of the National Archives of India, State Archives, and the records of India Office, London, the book chronicles the administrative policy of English East India Company and the British Crown towards India’s heritage monuments: 1784-1904, highlighting the British government’s concern over the neglect of monuments, and how it put together efforts to evolve a definitive policy for arresting their further decay. Offered in fifteen chapters, the study vividly demonstrates the gradual development of a definitive policy towards care of monuments in India. Each chapter is followed by extensive original references. The book focuses specially on the times of Lytton and Curzon, when Archaeology in India received considerable state support and impetus. Dr Dhirendra Kumar Pant (b. 1946) is a former officer of the National Archives of India, New Delhi. He has also worked in the Ministry of Home Affairs as Senior Archivist. The Six Ways of Knowing: A Critical Study of the Vedanta Theory of Knowledge
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8124609063; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This volume critically examines six epistemological theories of the Advaita school of Vedanta: pratyaksha (perception), upamana (comparison), anupalabdhi (non-cognition), anumana (inference), arthapatti (postulation) and shabda (testimony). To make the study smooth and easy, it deliberates on two other concepts prama (conceptions of knowledge) and pramana (methods of knowing) as these underlie all epistemological discussions.The book highlights the problems, concepts and theories of the Vedantins within the focus of modern Western thought. The method adopted is one of critical analysis, comparison and evaluation. It also tries to formulate some important epistemological doctrines of Advaita Vedanta and show by some criticism that, if rightly understood, they are valuable contributions to the philosophy of the world.The book, targeting sceptical students trained in Western philosophy and an imagined tribunal of Western philosophers, tries to make a case for Advaita Vedanta, and thus is expected to usher keen interest among the students, teachers and followers of Advaita Vedanta.
