Hard-to-Solve Math Puzzles
Goodwill Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 8172452926; Softcover; New;
"Hard-to-solve" doesn't mean you need to know any higher math to do the puzzles in this book. There are no prerequisites of differential calculus, functional analysis, linear algebra, or anything like that, But while the puzzles don't require advanced mathematics to state, they do require insight to solve: How can you divide a regular pentagon into five identical pentagonal shapes? What is the only decade in American history to contain four prime-numbered years? What three right triangles with integer sides have areas numerically equal to twice their perimeters?If you don't see the answers just yet, don't give up.Remember, you have plenty of company. But if you come up with the right insight and solve the puzzles, you'll have a satisfaction you won't forget. This is one book that you'll be proud to carry around.This book wouldn't have been possible without the work of some giants in the field. The author extends his thanks to everyone who showed how much fun puzzles are, from 19thcentury greats Sam Loyd and Henry Dudeney all the way to Martin Gardner. The work of Joseph Madachy, Leo Moser, Harry Nelson, Arlet Ottens, Richard Stanley, and other topnotch puzzle makers and solvers has also had a great influence. Rob Blaustein suggested some interesting puzzle concepts. Fraser Simpson provided timely and thorough proofreading. Last but not least, my editor Peter Gordon put everything together into a tidy little book. Thanks to all. Printed Pages: 96. 108114

Lee Jong-wook: A Life in Health and Politics
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8125046178; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
A newly qualified doctor, Lee Jong-wook, offers his services treating leprosy patients at St Lazarus Village outside his home town, Seoul. Here he finds both direction for his future work and his wife, like himself a volunteer. Desmond Avery describes Lee Jong-wook?s international adventures from Korea to Hawaii as a postdoctoral student, then to American Samoa as an emergency room clinician, and to Fiji as a World Health Organization medical officer for leprosy. As Lee?s WHO responsibilities expand to other areas, they take him to the Philippines, and then to Switzerland where, in 2003, he is elected Director-General of WHO, the first Korean to head an international organisation. Through this account of Lee Jong-wook?s career in health and politics, the author touches upon many important questions: Will there be a next global pandemic of deadly influenza? To what extent are AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria controllable? Who will foot the bill for polio eradication? The biography also yields important insights into international public health policy-making. The book contains 26 photographs, in colour and in black and white, on art paper, covering various phases of Lee Jong-wook?s life. Printed Pages: 300. 037299

7006 Detlef Kantowsky
An Indian Village Through Letters and Pictures
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 1999; 0195650204; First Edition; Paperback; New;
A classic work of reflective and visual anthropology, An Indian Village through Letters and Pictures , is an intimate and vivid picture of the village of Rameshvar near Varanasi. Reassembling his fieldwork data (1965-7) in the light of subsequent revisits to the village over a twenty-year period, Kantowsky contends that an anthropologist becomes aware of his own subjectivity once he begins to interpret his fieldwork data and it is precisely this mesh of subjectivity and objectivity, in which concepts are interwoven with interests, and general theory with personal history, that makes the fieldwork meaningful. This book is abundantly illustrated with photographs, letters, and diary excerpts, and will appeal to general readers as an authentic documentation of the socio-cultural configurations of a typical north Indian village. A sound ethnography with significant implications for anthropological method, it will be of great value for students of sociology and social anthropology. Printed Pages: 203. 029112

The Prakash Padukone Story
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098033; Softcover; New;
Prakash Padukone will be remembered as a pioneer in Indian sport. At a time when few in the country thought of sport as a career, Padukone broke new ground. Not content with becoming the best in the country, he embarked on a journey of excellence—a journey that took him to the summit of many tournaments across the world. The best-remembered of these is the All England title that he won in 1980 which so decisively changed the history of Indian sport.But the All England wasn’t the only title he won—his conquests included the World Cup in 1981, the Swedish and Danish Opens in 1980,the Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1978,the Hong Kong Open in 1982. These were apart from medals won at the Asian Games, World Championships and Asian Championships. After his All England win in 1980, he went to Denmark to play for a club, Hidovre. During those six years, Prakash was among the elite of the badminton world, playing tournaments in Asia and Europe, winning some, and mostly reaching the semifinals or finals. Since he was based in Europe, his fans in India could only get brief reports of his accomplishments, and that is why our knowledge of his exploits is so limited. This book attempts to chronicle the most important aspects of his life and career which are remembered by only his most ardent fans. But Padukone’s contributions cannot just be measured in terms of medals or titles won. His victories gladdened the hearts of Indians at a time when it had few world-class professionals in any field; his portsman like conduct meant that he was seen as an excellent ambassador for India at the world stage. After his retirement, he has continued to champion the cause of Indian sport.Printed Pages: 252 with 38 b/w photographs. 106515

The Hidden Wisdom of the Goddess
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834666; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Hidden Wisdom of the Goddess is an extended meditation in the form of a novel that follows the Devimahatmya's basic outline, condensed here and expanded there in freely imaginative ways. In the Devimahatmya the seer Medhas teaches through the language of myth, which cries out for interpretation, because little is spelled out. The Hidden Wisdom to the Goddess communicates the hidden wisdom of the holy man's teachings simply, directly, and eloquently. Most of the book consists of newly invented scenes, incidents, and conversations between Medhas and his two disciples, the king Suratha and the merchant Samadhi. As the book progresses, the main characters become fleshed out and take on a life of their own. All the while, the writing probes ever deeper into the mysterious of human existence.Printed Pages: 244. 102066

Erotic Sculpture of India. A Socio-cultural Study
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1985; 8121500184; Second Revised Edition; Cloth; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Erotic sculpture around places of worship of any society would require an explanation. Its unignorable presence outside Hindu temples when the religion itself has been known for its other-worldly ideals and spiritual aspirations has both astonished and puzzled visitors. The Brahmin panda (guide) accompanying the inquisitive tourist at sites like Bhubaneswar or Konarak as well as the scholarly Hindu steeped in a less free later day morality find the anomaly embarrassing and proffer idealistic explanations in which sexual expression is interpreted either as a symbolic representation of Eternal Bliss or as the overt manifestation of kama, the third purusartha. Such explanations fail to account for themes like orgies and bestiality and the vast upsurge in sexual depiction in sculpture between AD 900 and 1400. What is the rationale of erotic depictions in religious art? What is their thematic content? Is erotic sculpture confined to temples of particular religious cults? Could esoteric Tantrikas display their own secret practices? This inquiry is concerned as much with the question of religious sanction as with the sociological factors generating the permissive atmosphere and mood for the depiction of sexual motifs. The proliferation of feudal chiefs and rulers, their interest in temple-building, the feudalization of temple institution and its growing wealth and power, the degeneration of devadasi (sacred, prostitution) system are found to be some of the medieval developments responsible for the profuse display of eroticism. Eroticism in sculpture is compared with the dominant themes in the other modes of art prevalent during the period. The present study examines practically the entire corpus of the empirical material on erotic motives and action over the period from the third century BC to the fifteenth century AD. In the course of the examination the author brings to light a wide variety of themes in the erotic sculpture of India. The illustrations represent prominently the lesser known sites like Bavka, Modhera, Bagali, etc., along with familiar sites like Khajuraho, Konarak and Bhubaneswar and are not merely illustrative; they throw up questions for examination to begin with, and serve also as supporting evidence for the argument advanced. In the present edition the bibliography is upto dated and new illustrations added with notes. Printed Pages: 287 with 157 b/w illustrations and 26 line drawings. 033767

Art and Icon: Essays on Early Indian Art
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2013; 817305438X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 21 x 27 Cm
The author's love for ancient Indian art and several years of intensive research are reflected in the essays included in this book. The essays cover a wide spectrum, from the sensuous to the sublime, from an analysis of narrative Ramayana sculptures, to a discussion of the relevance of Tantrism to erotic temple sculpture, to a study of ancient terracottas in a socio-cultural context. Art and Icon brings together for the first time 16 selected essays from the 90 that Dr. Devangana Desai has written over a period of 35 years, many of which are not easily accessible. These have been edited and updated with new material. The essays are divided into six sections: i) Approaches to Art, ii) Terracotta Art, iii) Iconography, iv) Iconology and Meaning in Art, v) Art and Eroticism, and vi) Narrative Art. Icons and images, sacred objects of veneration, are generally guided by elaborate rules and conventions detailing their size, sitting or standing postures and hand gestures. Artists have more flexibility when depicting non-iconic subjects. However, the line between art and icon is rather thin as is evident in some magnificent images published in this book. The author reveals the interrelationships and interactions between various fields of art - sculpture, dance and narration of stories - as can be noticed particularly in the articles on the dancing Ganesa, the auspicious motifs of Salabhanjika (woman-and-tree) and surasundari (celestial nymph), and the figures in the narrative sculptural panels. The article ''The Temple as an Ordered Whole - The Iconic Scheme at Khajuraho'' is a significant contribution to an iconological study of temple art. This well-illustrated book will be valuable to scholars as well as students of Indian art and will also appeal to general readers. Stop Sleepwalking Through Life: 9 Lessons to Increase Your Awareness
Yogi Impressions; Mumbai, India; 8188479101; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 19 Cms
What happens when your 'big dreams' get fulfilled? Do you attain an enduring state of fulfilment? Are you then able to live happily ever after? Or, is there something vital missing that you need to address now? "When I pose these questions to the students at IIT, they feel uncomfortable," says Dr. Menon. "The majority are too heavily programmed," he adds. "There appears to be too much at stake in the 'rat race' of life and it takes considerable courage, even just to pause and reflect, especially when one has traveled far and got ahead in the race. There is little in their education to persuade them to think otherwise." "Is this the best our education can offer today?" asks Dr. Menon. "Are we not completely evading certain key issues in life? Are we not leaving the young generations 'magnificently unprepared, for the long littleness of life'?" Drawing inspiration from various spiritual traditions, Dr. Menon guides the reader through nine graded chapters to the full meaning of 'awareness'. He establishes that awakening and continual awareness of one's ego-self not only bring freedom from mind-made suffering, but also enhance the quality of one's work and one's life. 7 Secrets of Vishnu
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789380658681; Softcover; New;
The author is proficient in writing about Hindu mythology and beliefs. In this book, 7 Secrets Of Vishnu, he goes into Vaishnavite philosophy and stories of Vishnu.Vishnu is the Preserver of the Hindu Trinity, Brahma is the Creator, and Shiva is the Destroyer. Being the Preserver, Vishnu is the God who comes to the aid of Devas, humans and even animals when they are in desperate situations.It is Vishnu who takes numerous avatars or incarnations and descends into the world of humans and restores order. The most famous among his incarnations are celebrated as the Dasavatar or the Ten Avatars. Among these are Rama and Krishna.This book explores these avatars and other stories. The author presents Vishnu as the God who shows the importance of the material world and the need for material growth in order to fully attain spiritual wisdom.The book also draws a parallel between the progression of his avatar in different forms, and evolution. The first avatar was Matsya, a fish. Next he is an amphibian, Kurma, the Tortoise. Then comes the Boar, Varaha, followed by a combination of human and beast, Narasimha. This is followed by the dwarf, Vamana, and the fierce Parasurama.After this comes Rama, a wise and cultured man. As Krishna, he showed that it is possible to indulge in the game of life and yet be a wise person who emphasizes the thoughts behind one’s actions. As the yet to come Kalki, he demonstrates the need to let go of status quo in order to bring in a change for the better.Besides these, 7 Secrets Of Vishnu also explores the story of Lakshmi and her sister, Alakshmi, and that of Saraswati. It looks at Narada, the sage who is known as a troublemaker, and the reason behind this. It explains why people don’t worship Brahma the Creator. It also explores the philosophical significance of the various stories and the importance and meanings of rituals and symbols used in the worship of Vishnu. 109566

Vishnu: An Introduction
Vakils, Feffer and Simons Ltd; Mumbai, India; 8187111127; Paperback; New; 23 x 29 Cm
This is an attempt to understand the meaning of Vishnu worship in our time. Written in simple narrative style, it takes us through Vaishnava imagery, philosophy, beliefs, customs, history, folklore and myth.This book brings together legends and lores from written and oral traditions of India to give an account of the heritage inspired by Vishnu.In the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, Vishnu is the protector of the cosmos who preserves life, making sure that all creatures enjoy a meaningful existence.Respected by gods, feared by demons and adored by humans, Vishnu sits in the highest heaven Vaikuntha, instituting and maintaining the sacred, moral and ethical order of dharama to ensure harmony in the three worlds. Whenever these laws are broken, whenever chaos and evil threaten the universe, Vishnu takes the form of man or beast to fight the forces of disorder and to reestablish dharma. Through these incarnations, or avatars, he maintains the integrity of the cosmic fabric. This book reaches out to young and old alike, retelling familiar legends of Rama and Krishna as well as unfamiliar ones like those of Vishnu's consort and son. Also included are tales of his lesser known incarnations such as Prithu, Hamsa, Hayagriva and Mandhata. Based on his mythological studies, the author has tried to assimilate the various strands - mythology, sociology, philosophy - that have gone in the making of a god of the Hindu pantheon - Vishnu - into his present day acceptance as an object of devout worship and a symbol of sublime art. Highlights include lucid explanations and a pictorial key to numerous symbols associated with Vaishnava customs and rituals, a map showing important Vishnu temples, a bibliography for those interested in learning more and over 200 illustrations of which many are in colour. 7 Secrets from Hindu Calendar Art
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 8189975676; Softcover; New;
Hindu mythology abounds with fascinating gods, goddesses and characters whose visual representations - through calendar art - are equally colourful. Hindu calendar art may seem fantastic and kitsch, but it is in fact the most democratic expression of a mythic imagery that was once restricted to temple walls and palm leaf manuscripts. These portraits of the Hindu pantheon of gods and the stories that surround them can be found on the walls and puja rooms of almost every Hindu household in India. Rich in symbols, each image is a piece of an ancient metaphysical jigsaw puzzle. In this book Dr.Devdutt Pattanaik, India`s renowned mythologist, decodes these symbols to reveal a wisdom that has nourished India for thousands of years. Printed Pages: 177. 109536

Text to Tradition: The Naisadhiyacarita and Literary Community in South Asia
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8121513200; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
WRITTEN IN THE TWELFTH CENTURY, the Naisadhiyacarita (The Adventures of Nala, King of Nisadha) is a seminal Sanskrit poem beloved by South Asian literary communities for nearly a millennium. This volume introduces readers to the poem’s author, his reading communities, the modes through which the poem has been read and used, the contexts through which it became canonical, its literary offspring, and the emotional power it still holds for the culture that values it. Text to Tradition privileges the intellectual, affective, and social forms of cultural practice that inform a region’s people and institutions. It also proposes a new way to conduct literary historiography, understanding literary texts as “traditions” in their own right and emphasizing the various players and critical genres involved in their reception. The book underscores the importance of the close study of individual works to building a history of literary cultures. In addition, it creates a groundbreaking model for approaching the study of other venerated South Asian texts Printed Pages: 288. 039857

Sculptures from Punjab: Iconography and Style
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8173054142; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 22 x 28 Cm
Punjab has almost been a terra incognita for long with regard to the sculptural art and not much is known even now except 57 railing pillars of Sanghol published by the National Museum, New Delhi. The remaining 60 pieces, some of which are aesthetically equally important, and some stray finds made now and then, have not received due attention which they deserved. Quite a few of the elegant and artistic sculptures have even been pilfered and are not traceable now. An effort has been made here to put everything together and present a coherent picture to the readers. Images published here throw fresh light on the culture, ethnology, trade, art and religious history of the region which have further been substantiated by literary, numismatic and epigraphic evidence. The Kushana railing pillars of Sanghol are a class by themselves and so are the Gupta terracottas from Ropar, Sanghol, Janer and Zahura. Medieval sculptures from Velore, Khanpur, Majhur, Janer, Dholbaha and other sites provide rare glimpses of the artistic, aesthetic and iconographic achievements of the artists. Metal images from Ropar, Bhudan, Sunam, Kharar and Ferozepur, mostly published for the first time, corroborate the evidence of marble images and throw new light on the impact and missionary activities of the Jaina monks from Rajasthan in Punjab. Stylistic and iconographic study of sculptures further reveals influence from Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Unfinished images from Dholbaha reveal that it was a great centre of art during the medieval period. Karttikeya with Krittikas from Sanghol; Harihara, Siva with goose, Siva's head with long jata-juta and the Ramayana panel from Dholbaha; Nataraja from Bathinda; Mukha-Linga from Sultanpur Lodi; Uma-Mahesvara from Ghanauli; Vaikuntha-Lakshmi from Lalru; and Jaina figures from Bathinda, Bhudan, Ferozepur, Ropar and Sunam show interesting iconographical innovations. With 62 sketches and 338 plates, Sculptures from Punjab is the first comprehensive work on the subject resulting from author's sustained interest and study for more than the last four decades. Jaina Bronzes From Hansi
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2002; 8173052344; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
"Haryana has been a terra incognita as far as the beginning of Jainism and Jaina art are concerned. The hoard of Jaina bronzes from Hansi in district Hisar, discovered just accidentally in February 1982, which has remained unpublished all these years, thus, forms an important discovery which throws very welcome light on the beginnings of Jainism in this northern state adjoining Delhi. It provides the earliest archaeological evidence of the prevalence of Jainism in Haryana as also of the bronze art of the region. The present hoard of fifty-eight bronze images belonging to the Svetambara and Digambara sects of the Jainas with two Buddhist images of bhumisparsa Buddha and Avalokitesvara Padmapani throws very significant light on the religious and art history of the region. The images belong to eighth through tenth centuries and were probably buried together at the time of the siege of the city towards the close of AD 1037. Many of the images show coatings and traces of sandal paste still sticking to them indicating thereby that they were under worship at the time of their burial. Another interesting fact is that the Svetambaras, Digambaras and the Buddhists joined together to bury these icons in one cauldron betraying the religious harmony that may have been prevailing at Hansi at that time. The images are not real bronzes but made of different alloys. They also betray the techniques of solid and hollow casting, welding, hammering, engraving on sheets, etc. to create them. The contents of the hoard reveal that Parsvanatha was the most popular tirthankara at Hansi followed by Mahavira, Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), Chandraprabha and Mallinatha. This hoard has provided us the first metallic image of female Mallinatha, the earliest and the only known example of the parents of the Jina in metal, and early examples of the metallic Sarvatobhadrikas. Influence from Rajasthan and Gujarat is also discernible in their technique and iconography. The present book deals with all these aspects of the metal images and brings out their religious, cultural and art-historical importance." Cultural History from the Vayu Purana
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1973; 8120820851; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The present book attempts to supplement the work of Pargiter on the Cultural plane. Pargiter was concerned with the dynastic records of the Puranic texts while this book aims to interpret "cultural history" from the Vayu Purana. The work is divided into ten chapters arranged systematically. The first five chapters contain facts of intellectual culture and the last five of material culture. The presentation of material has involved a great deal of translation and interpretation of the Puranic text. The work has two appendices and a critical introduction. Appendix A identifies the places and tribes. Appendix B describes the centres of pilgrimage. Introduction surveys the previous research on the Puranas, on the Vayu particularly. It discusses the antiquity of the Vayu, its value for the cultural history and the method followed in the present investigation. It also gives an outline of political history as found in the Vayu Purana. This book is valuable not only for Indian Culture, but also for a critical edition of Vayu, and consequently of other Purana material.Printed Pages: 365. 102053

Public Institutions in India: Performance and Design
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 0195689666; Softcover; New;
This volume analytically assesses the design, performance, and adaptability of the principal institutions of governance in India and their critical role in a democratic polity. It is axiomatic that societies are well governed and well organized to the extent that their public institutions can adequately manage the demands imposed on them. In India, it is commonly held that a modest record in development and governance is explained by the somewhat limited utility of many public institutions. The volume looks at the Parliament, Presidency, institutions of internal accountability, the Judiciary, Police, and the Civil Service in addition to economic institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India, as also several regulatory bodies, paying special attention to the variables like autonomy, accountability, and information-sharing that have affected the perf ormance of different institutions across time. Also included are essays that explore the critical role played by institutions in enhancing economic performance, strengthening federalism, and deepening the democratic impulse in India. In addition, they look at how electoral uncertainty has given a new lease of life to `referee institutions` like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. Further, the volume looks at the variations in institutional performance of the Indian state across time, and evaluates if the state has the capacity to adapt to a changing environment. Navigating the Labyrinth: Perspectives on India’s Higher Education
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 9789386296993; Hardcover; New; New;
In India, few things open faster than colleges, but few sectors reform more slowly than higher education. Demographic changes, economic growth and integration into the global economy, the rising demand for higher education, and the increase in the number of private colleges have led to a massive expansion in Indian higher education. While challenges of access and cost have been long-standing, much of this expansion has been of dubious quality, the result of sustained and deep regulatory and governance failures.This book analyses these and other complex challenges facing higher education in India, and suggests possible solutions to some of them. The contributors highlight a range of issues facing higher education today, through a deeply moving account of the decline of a college in north Bihar; discussions on the various types of post-secondary educational institutions—the research university, teaching colleges, and vocational training institutes; initiatives, such as community colleges, to address the problem of skill development in India; and the financing and governance of higher education in India. The book combines diverse methodologies: ethnography of institutions, case studies and data-based work, to present a complex landscape.These critical insights into higher education in India will be useful to scholars and researchers in education, political science, sociology, and public policy. Public Institutions in India: Performance and Design
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195667263; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
The modern state secures legitimacy and carries out its tasks of governance and development through a diverse range of institutions. In addition, they look at how electoral uncertainty has given a new lease of life to 'referee institutions' like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. Further, the volume looks at the variations in institutional performance of the Indian state across time, and evaluates if the state has the capacity to adapt to a changing environment. Providing detailed and original insights into the working of institutions and assessing the manner in which they assist, strengthen, thwart, manipulate, and subvert each other, this unique volume will be of interest to a scholarly audience in political science, public administration, and political sociology in addition to bureaucrats and policy planners, journalists, activists, and an informed general audi ence. The Vedas are the foundation on which the imposing Hindu religious edifice is built. The Yajurveda contains hymns taken from the older Rigveda and prose passages which are new. The hymns display considerable deviation from the original Rigvedic text. It can be called a priestly manual; for it lays down rules for the performance of various sacrifices. It has two samhitas or a collection of hymns of mantras; these are Taittiriya Samhita and Vajasaneya Samhita, popularly known as Black and White Yajur respectively. The subject-matter of both the samhitas is almost the same, though the arrangement is somewhat different. Of the two the Vajasaneya Samhita is planned in a more systematic and orderly manner than the other. It also contains some texts which are not found in the Taittiriya Samhita. This translation of Yajurveda by Devi Chand is based upon Swami Dayanand's interpretation. The translator has provided references in the footnotes to the different views of other scholars. To bring home to the common man the message of the Yajurveda, he has spared no pains to remove all obscurities inherent in the old form of Sanskrit which was in vogue three thousand years ago. The introduction and the index are added to help the reader. Everyone interested in the Vedas will find this book indispensable. Printed Pages: 480. 035393

The Atharvaveda: Sanskrit text with English Translation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8121501725; Fifth Edition; Cloth; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
Are the Vedas three or four in number? The Western scholars basing their arguments on the Purusasukta and the word abhicara meaning sorcery and charms have concluded that the Vedas are three and Atharvaveda does not belong to the main body as it deals with black magic. This conclusion is wrong; for, the Atharvaveda deals with all those evils that have plagued mankind from the dawn of creation and suggests remedies in the form of medicines and prayers. From the point of view usefulness, the Atharvaveda is the best for man, as it has prayers for his well-being. Devi Chand's translation is based on Swami Dayanand's interpretation. He has also made use of the commentaries of eminent Indian and foreign Vedic scholars. He has spared no pains to bring home the message of the Atharvaveda to contemporary man. The notes, index and the introduction adds to the value of this book. All those interested to find solutions to the myriad problems that affect them everyday shall find this book highly useful. The Samaveda: Sanskrit text with English Translation
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121501997; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The verses of Samaveda, all except 78, are taken from the Rgveda. They are arranged in a sequence different from that of the Rgveda and divided into two parts. The first part, called Purvarcika has 589 verses; the second, called Uttararcika, has 1225 stanzas. The hymns are invocation addressed to Soma, Agni and Indra meant for chanting by Udgatr priests at Soma sacrifices and not devoted chiefly to the worship of Indra and who has to befuddle himself with Soma in order to slay demons as a reputed scholar put it. Due to its special reference to Pitrs or deceased forefathers, the sounds of the Samans are considered by some as impure. This edition of Samaveda, a translation by Devi Chand, is based on the exposition of Swami Dayanand. The translator has furnished references in the footnotes to different interpretations of Indian and foreign scholars. An introduction and glossary-cum index are added for the benefit of those not acquainted with Samaveda. Everyone shall find this an excellent book for a thorough understanding of the Samaveda. Breaking Out of the Gree House: Indian Leadership in Times of Environmental Change
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381904138; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The book traverses several pathways including the basics of science and geography, geopolitics and international relations, strategic and security studies, policy-related and diplomatic dialogues, as well as socio-cultural and economic perspectives in order to bring out a holistic picture of how environmental change has shaped the international system and India’s position in it. The central argument of the book that environmental change can change/is changing geography and in turn can change/is changing international relations has been substantiated by detailed analysis of the drivers of India’s environmental policies, international climate change negotiations, role of state and non-state actors in the international environmental discourse both in theory and practice, and finally the interconnectedness between environmental change and national security. The volume tries to find the right balance between the international scene embodied by the negotiations driven by hardcore economics on the one hand, and the domestic realities of India that steer its climate change policy based on energy security and developmental concerns. The need to address the larger issue of environmental change rather than concentrating on one aspect of it – climate change – to reduce the amount of polarisation that surrounds the global environmental debate especially in the wake of the introduction of the issue at the United Nations Security Council, has been reiterated throughout the work. It contains policy recommendations in terms of methods of adaptation, mitigation, energy management/diversification, enhancement of the role of think tanks as well as diplomatic manoeuvring (principles-based) at the climate change negotiations and other international debates. This area of study is comparatively new in India while the West has been dedicating a significant amount of resources towards research in energy and environmental security for the past two decades. Therefore, one of the objectives of the book is to evolve an Indian perspective on these strategic issues in a Western literature-dominated arena. Though the book brings to light several gaping holes in India’s policy and strategy, it contends that India has a plethora of options and opportunities to not only maintain its own national security but also help the world ‘adapt’ and ‘mitigate’ in times of environmental change.Printed Pages: 256. 104336

7095 Dhanpat Rai Premchand; Translated By Gordon C. Roadarmel; with a New Introduction By Vasudha Dalmia
Godaan (The Gift of a Cow)
Permanent Black; Ranikhet, India; 2005; 8178240408; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14.5 Cms x 22 Cms
Premchand is the most famous Hindi novelist, and Godaan is Premchand’s most celebrated novel. Economic and social conflict in a north Indian village are brilliantly captured in the story of Hori, a poor farmer, and his family’s struggle for survival and self-respect. Hori does everything he can to fulfill his life’s desire: to own a cow, the peasant’s measure of wealth and well-being. Like many Hindus of his time, he believes that making the gift of a cow to a Brahman before he dies will help him achieve salvation. An engaging introduction to India before Independence, Godaan is at once village ethnography, moving human document, and insightful colonial history. Out of print for many years, this translation is regarded as a classic in itself. Printed pages: 470. 031487

America in Crisis
Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380828046; Softcover; New;
America is in the grip of a crisis seldom seen in its history. At the domestic level, there is rising unemployment, a recession that seems to have no end, increased drug abuse, failing schools and the breakdown of the family. America's international image is dented by wars, the incidence of terrorism and the failure of the Obama Administration to bring about comprehensive immigration reforms. Dr Dhanpaul Narine writes brilliantly about some of these issues and asks that we think of the ways and means to resolve them. 107251
