Kierkegaard for Beginners
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8125031693; Reprint; Paperback; New;
Carl Gustav Jung merged Eastern mysticism with Western psychology, brought scientific respectability to religion, laid the foundation for 'the New Age', and is second only to Freud in influence and importance. So it is easy to see why some people consider him a genius. But others... Put it this way: Some people are so good that all we can do is look up to them. He was a great man who made great mistakes. The two most (in) famous events in Jung's life were his break with Freud and his sojourn with the Nazis. Most books on Jung minimize his Nazi period. Author and psychologist Jon Plantania, finds nazism too hideous to minimize, so he tells this part of the story without pulling any punches Platania then takes us on a tour to the work that made Jung one fo the Pillars of modern psychology. And what a body of work it is! Jung's open-mindedness was astonishing Wherever he went - Calcutta, Egypt, Palestine, Kenya - Jung learned something that expanded his views. His open-ended psychology incorporated yoga, meditation, prayer, alchemy, mythology, astrology, numerology, the I ching - even flying saucers! he taught us that psychology and religion can not only coexist peacefully together, but that thet can enhance us, inspire us, and help us complete ourselves. Portraits of the Masters: Bronze Sculptures of the Tibetan Buddhist Lineages
Serindia Publications; Chicago, USA; 2003; 1932476008; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 10.75" x 12.5"
Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism is rapidly becoming a part of our cultural landscape, an element of human civilisation with its own universal appeal. Nevertheless public awareness remains limited concerning the great teachers and visionaries who over fourteen centuries formulated and expounded the system of thought which in the 21st century seems the most contemporary of the world religions. And yet there is a rich written tradition dating back at least 800 years documenting their lives and teachings, and an even more ancient tradition of portraiture in sculpture and painting which strove to capture both the physical and spiritual presence of these lamas. Portraits of the Masters unfolds for the first time a pictorial history of a dynamic and living religious tradition. A catalogue of 108 portrait bronzes of great masters of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, it presents an innovative history of these teaching lineages based on and illustrated by the collection. Ranging in date from the 12th to 18th century, the sculptures in Portraits of the Masters span the most productive period in the history of Tibetan Buddhist art, providing unparalleled illustration of Tibetan portraiture’s long and varied history. Prefaced with a groundbreaking and comprehensive history of Tibetan portraiture, the collection is presented in five sections devoted to the Arhats, drawn from the Buddha’s original Indian disciples, and to the native Tibetan schools of the Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and the Kadam and Geluk. Each section opens with a history of the tradition, written by leading scholars of Tibetan Buddhism. These histories not only illumine the lives of the great masters, but also eloquently articulate the basic precepts of their teachings. The sculptures are then examined within this context – the history and images breathing life into each other. Printed Pages: 396 with 300 color illustrations. 000513

Buddhism and Science: A Guide for the Perplexed
The University of Chicago Press; Chicago, USA; 2008; 0226493121; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Beginning in the nineteenth century and continuing to the present day, both Buddhists and admirers of Buddhism have proclaimed the compatibility of Buddhism and science. Their assertions have ranged from modest claims about the efficacy of meditation for mental health to grander declarations that the Buddha himself anticipated the theories of relativity, quantum physics and the big bang more than two millennia ago. In Buddhism and Science, Donald S. Lopez Jr. is less interested in evaluating the accuracy of such claims than in exploring how and why these two seemingly disparate modes of understanding the inner and outer universe have been so persistently linked. Lopez opens with an account of the rise and fall of Mount Meru, the great peak that stands at the center of the flat earth of Buddhist cosmography—and which was interpreted anew once it proved incompatible with modern geography. From there, he analyzes the way in which Buddhist concepts of spiritual nobility were enlisted to support the notorious science of race in the nineteenth century. Bringing the story to the present, Lopez explores the Dalai Lama’s interest in scientific discoveries, as well as the implications of research on meditation for neuroscience. Lopez argues that by presenting an ancient Asian tradition as compatible with—and even anticipating—scientific discoveries, European enthusiasts and Asian elites have sidestepped the debates on the relevance of religion in the modern world that began in the nineteenth century and still flare today. As new discoveries continue to reshape our understanding of mind and matter, Buddhism and Science will be indispensable reading for those fascinated by religion, science, and their often vexed relation. A Study of Svatantrika
Snow Lion/Shambhala Publications/TBI; New Delhi, India; 1987; 1559394552; Softcover; New; 15 x 23 Cm
A Study of Svatantrika represents an important contribution to our understanding of Madhyamika philosophy in India and Tibet. The Madhyamika is considered to have two subschools, Svatantrika and Prasa?gika. The Prasa?gika school of Candrakirti is better known than Svatantrika, in part because the major Svatantrika texts are preserved only in Tibetan translation. The Svatantrikas, however, made important contributions to Buddhist philosophy in their expositions of the nature of reality, the role of reasoning in the process of enlightenment, and in their delineations of the paths to nirvana. The synthesis of Yogacara and Madhyamika philosophy by the Svatantrika master Santarak?ita represents the final development of Buddhist thought in India. In Tibet, Svatantrika was the first Indian Buddhist school to gain currency, prior to the translation of the works of Candrakirti into Tibetan. In preparing this Study of Svatantrika, Donald S. Lopez, Jr. consulted the major Indian works of the Svatantrikas, figures central to the development of Buddhist thought in India such as Bhavaviveka, Jñanagarbha, Santarak?ita, and Kamalasila, and analyzed a number of Tibetan expositions of Svatantrika. The result is the most extensive examination of this influential school available in the West. Printed Pages: 483. 111486

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508320; First Indian Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The anthology illustrates the vast scope of Buddhist practice in Asia, past and present, by presenting a selection of forty-eight translated texts including hagiographies, monastic rules, pilgrimage songs, apocryphal sutras, and didactic tales from India, China, Japan, Korea, Tibet, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Burma. Most of these pieces have never before been translated into a Western language, and each is preceded by a substantial introduction by its translator. Together they are designed to do nothing less than reshape the way in which Buddhism is understood. These unusual sources provide the reader with a sense of the remarkable diversity of the practices of persons who over the course of 2,500 years have been identified, by themselves or by others, as Buddhists. In this rich variety there are often contradictions, such that the practices of one Buddhist community might seem strange or unfamiliar to another. At the same time, however, there is evidence here of many continuities among the practices of Buddhist cultures widely separated by both history and topography. From "A Hymn of Praise to the Buddha's Good Qualities" through "On Becoming a Buddhist Wizard" to "Death-Bed Testimonials of the Pure Land Faithful," the selections here are an ideal introduction to Buddhism and a source of new insights for scholars. Predication Theory: A Case Study for Indexing Theory (Cambridge Studies in Linguistics-50)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521368200; First Edition; Paperback; Fine; 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
In this study Donna Jo Napoli takes a refreshingly commonsense approach to the notions of argument and predicate. Recent discussions of predication within Government and Binding theory have stressed the configurational properties of the phrases involved, and Napoli argues that this has led to proposals for more and more elaborate syntactic structures that nevertheless fail to provide genuinely explanatory accounts. She presents a convincing case for viewing the notion of predicate as a semantic primitive which cannot be defined by looking simply at the lexicon or simply at the syntactic structure, and offers a theory or predication where the key to the subject-predicate relationship is theta-role assignment. The book then goes on to offer principles for the coindexing of a predicate with its subject role player. These coindexing principles make use of Chomsky’s 1986 notion of barriers, but instead of being sensitive to configurational notions like c-command and governing category, Napoli argues that they are sensitive to thematic structure. In the final chapter of the book Napoli extends the principles for predication coindexing to anaphor binding, by introducing the notion of argument ladders. The overall approach taken here is bound to be controversial, but it successfully handles the data traditionally considered in discussions of predication, as well as constructions that present major problems for other existing theories. Exemplification is from English and Italian, but the conclusions apply to all languages. Predication theory has been written in a spirit of inquiry that offers many fresh insights to all linguists and philosophers interested in predication, whatever their theoretical persuasion. Napoli writes in an informal and accessible style that will attract students who already have some background in syntax as well as specialists. Contents Acknowledgements; Introduction; 1. Predicates and theta-role assignment; 2. The principles of predication coindexing; 3. Predication coindexing within NP in Italian; 4. Predication coindexing within NP in English; 5. A brief look at five more constructions; 6. An indexing theory encompassing anaphora and predication; References; Index of names; Index of subjects. Printed Pages: 384. 003115

Personalities in Love: Understanding Yourself and Your Partner in Life
Times Group Books; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789380828954; First Edition; Softcover; New;
"Understand yourself first. Understand your Man. Then understand the relationship – is personality Guru Donna Partow's advice to women to help them maximize their roles as mothers, wives, and individuals. Everyone you meet will be a unique blend, but the simplest way to understand a person is by understanding his or her underlying “colors.” You'll gain an increased appreciation for the man in your life, she says in this book. You'll find freedom in the realization that just because you disagree doesn't mean one of you is wrong and the other is right. You can conserve precious time and energy once you accept that you're simply looking at life through two very different lenses. And that's not only okay, it's a good thing." Maybe Yesterday: A Novel
Promilla & Co., Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8185002991; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 5.75 x 8.75 Inches
The Viennese aircraft captain Julian Kaiser and his ex-wife Tara, a distinguished Indologist, are the protagonists of this novel. Set in Europe and India, and embedded in a multi-layered, complex plot, its story is about searching and missing, about illusions and finding. Love in times of globalisation and the advantages and dangers of new forms of dating allowed by modern communication technology, are likewise addressed. Also, the stressed out Europeans' quest for the meaning of life in Eastern traditions of philosophy, which sometimes takes on the most curious forms, is also woven into this novel. As in her previous books Dorothea Nürnberg goes deep into the philosophy and spirituality of India. She takes the reader along with her in her passionate journey into the hearts of her protagonists. Wisdom's Blossoms: Tales of the Saints of India
Shambhala; Boston, USA; 2002; 157062884X; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
Here is a timeless collection of traditional stories that recount the personal spiritual journeys and true acts of selflessness by saints from various religious traditions indigenous to India, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Sufism. The authors present a diverse selection of these inspirational tales—about both men and women saints, from a variety of time periods, and from all over India—and make them relevant for a modern audience. The stories reveal that, despite their perceived differences, the same spiritual principles underlie all the great religious traditions. Printed Pages: 207. 013988

Small Town Capitalism in Western India: Artisans, Merchants and the Making of the Informal Economy, 1870 - 1960
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2012; 110703129X; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
This book charts the history of artisan production and marketing in the Bombay Presidency from 1870 to 1960. While the textile mills of western India's biggest cities have been the subject of many rich studies, the role of artisan producers located in the region's small towns have been virtually ignored. Based upon extensive archival research as well as numerous interviews with participants in the handloom and powerloom industries, this book explores the role of weavers, merchants, consumers and laborers in the making of what the author calls 'small-town capitalism'. By focusing on the politics of negotiation and resistance in local workshops, the book challenges conventional narratives of industrial change. The book provides the first in-depth work on the origins of powerloom manufacture in South Asia. It affords unique insights into the social and economic experience of small-town artisans as well as the informal economy of late colonial and early post-independence India. Table of Contents Introduction 1. The historical and global contexts of artisan production 2. Consumers, merchants, and markets 3. Artisanal towns 4. The organization of production 5. Small town capitalism and the living standards of artisans 6. The colonial state and the handloom weaver 7. The paradox of the Long 1930s 8. Weaver capitalists and the politics of the workshop, 1940–60. 037633
