The Archaeology of the Deccan Routes: The Ancient Routes from the Ganga Plain to the Deccan
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8121511399; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
Based on extensive field-studies in 1999-2002, this book sets out to trace the routes which linked the Ganga-Yamuna plain between Rajagriha and Mathura with Andhra (eastern Deccan) and Maharashtra (western Deccan) in the ancient period. What has emerged is the essential framework of a complex network of routes still traceable on the ground. This network has also been compared with the corresponding evidence in the mediaeval and later historic records, and it has been argued that, although the routes of these later periods had partly changed their alignments with the rise of new economic and political centres of power, the ancient alignments did not die out but continued to function at the grassroots level. This may be said to be the first field-study of its kind in the context of ancient Indian routes. Printed Pages: 183 with numerous b/w plates. 026409

Royal Messages By The Wayside: Historical Geography of The Asokan Edicts
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8173054118; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
This book discusses the geographical implications of the locations of the Asokan edicts and is based on field-studies of many of these locations. The Asokan studies have largely been based, since their inception, on the issues of language, script and grammar, and one hopes that the studies of this kind, which are important ingredients of Asokan scholarship, will continue to be undertaken. However, textual scholarship or grammatical rules do not necessarily lead by themselves to historical or geographical knowledge. By studying in detail the geographical locations of the Asokan edicts, the present book has tried to understand some of the geopolitical factors operative in Mauryan India. It has also tried to identify ancient Tosali and the place where the battle for Kalinga was likely to have taken place. Two more major places which have been identified are Isila and Suvarnagiri. Among other things, it has argued that the Mauryan art, instead of being so-called 'imperial' and 'courtly', was much more broad-based than is thought and effectively foreshadowed some basic elements of the later 'Sunga art'. Archaeology of Eastern India: Chhotanagpur Plateau and West Bengal
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1993; 8121506018; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 Cms x 25 Cms
For a number of reasons the archaeology of the Chhotanagpur plateau and its extension up to the edge of the Bhagirathi plain in West Bengal deserves more than a passing mention in Indian archaeology. First, its sheer geographical extent requires emphasis: more than a hundred thousand square kilometres spread diagonally between the hills overlooking the Ganges near Rajmahal to the hills in southwestern Singhbhum on the one hand and between the northwesternmost part of Palamau to the Sonamukhi and Garh Jaipur forests in the eastern section of Bankura on the other. Secondly, the entire region is full of archaeological sites from the lower palaeolithic stage onwards, and some of the major issues of cultural development in eastern India are centred around them. Thirdly, the plateau which is rich in metals, stones and timber is the most important resource-bearing area in east India, and the way in which it was integrated into an exchange network with the plains may be a major archaeological and historic theme of study. Fourthly, the region as a whole is a home of a large number of tribal communities on various levels of subsistence and with different linguistic affiliations. Early this century a government officer wrote that it was as near as one could get to 'primitive India' but does this 'primitiveness' mean that this was an 'area of isolation' cut off from the main flow of Indian history? Which areas of study admit of the possibilities of ethnographic continuum between the prehistoric past and in the preindustrial present in this region? Based on field-surveys undertaken between 1981 and 1987, this work studies the archaeology of this region as a whole. Archaeological research in this region goes back to the 1860s but it is perhaps for the first time that the region as a whole has been studied and various dimensions of its archaeology focussed. This is also one of the major attempts to view archaeology as long-term settlement history in the context of India. Printed Pages: 242 with 31 line drawings and 14 b/w illustrations. 017897

A History of Indian Archaeology from the Beginning to 1947
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8121500796; Second Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16.5 Cms x 25 Cms
The history of Indian archaeology has not received the academic attention it deserves. It has a number of roots, the earliest of which goes back to the records of European travellers and sailors in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The ideas involved in its steady evolution since the middle of the eighteenth century are interesting in their own right and illuminate the history of the major discoveries and developments of the subject. Concerned with the evolving panorama of the Indian archaeological scene as a whole till 1947, this is the first major work of its kind. The author moves with an easy assurance, clarity and precision over a vast and diverse body of literature. The volume is further enriched by the inclusion of two original documents relating to Alexander Cunningham and Lord Curzon. This is a book which nobody with an interest in South Asian archaeology can possible afford to ignore. Printed Pages: 271. 014451

The Issues in East Indian Archaeology
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8121508045; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
Archaeology is a neglected field of study in eastern India. However, the area from Arunachal to Orissa and Bihar covers a very large chunk of the subcontinent and is also along its most distinctive cultural areas. From this point of view the establishment of a new archaeological research institute, Centre for Archaeological Studies and Training, in Calcutta by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Bengal, is a welcome development. In September 1996 the author who possesses a grassroots familiarity with the issues facing archaeological research in this region delivered a number of lectures at the invitation of this institute. The purpose of these lectures was to assess the current status of archaeological knowledge about east India and highlight some of its research priorities. The picture has been portrayed as objectively as possible and may help in the planning of archaeological research in this part of India. Printed Pages: 160. 000231

Theoretical Issues in Indian Archaeology
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1988; 81-215-0443-5; First Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The theoretical issues which have been considered in the present volume are the changing perspectives in Indian archaeology, diffusion an explanatory model, archaeology-literature correlation, geographical approaches, the study of prehistory, transition to foodproduction and urbanisation, agriculture, metallurgy and trade. The author's discussion of these issues (done in a course of eight seminars under the auspices of Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris) is both stimulating and original, and constitutes a significant addition to the south Asian archaeological literature. Fifty Years of Indian Archaeology (1960-2010): Journey of a Foot Soldier
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8173054290; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
The present volume may be judged on two levels. On the first level, it deals with the beginning and the current status of archaeology in the Indian university system, focussing primarily on the author's own experience as a long-standing teacher of the subject. It also outlines the author's personal background and early academic roots, hoping to give an idea of the types of students who were drawn to archaeology in India in its early phase. There are also notes on his professional experience in the Indian universities he has served. It should be possible to assess on the basis of these notes the general state of affairs in the historical studies section of the Indian universities. On the second level, this book offers a detailed review of the development of various ideas, research themes and field-projects in Indian archaeology over the last fifty years with special reference to the author's own work. Indian archaeological writings have seldom been concerned with the historiography of ideas and research themes, and from this point of view the present book may be considered a reasonably elaborate examination of how archaeology has developed as an academic discipline in the Indian university framework. The Archaeology of European Expansion in India: Gujarat, c.16th-18th Centuries
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8173052506; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 18 x 25 Cm
"The aim of the fieldwork, on which this book is based, was to explore the possibility of conducting archaeological excavations in Surat where the Europeans including the British were most likely to have left behind the material traces of their presence between 16 and 18 centuries. However, before undertaking such excavations, one should have an understanding of the historical frame-work within which the relevant archaeological issues can be contextualized. The purpose of this book is to put forward this framework and advance the general concept of ‘The Archaeology of European Expansion’ in South Asian Archaeology." Yantra Images
Indian Mind; Varanasi, India; 2010; 8186117075; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
Religion is the root of Indian culture. Rituals and believes are the integral part of Hindu Religion. It becomes more powerful when a devotee develops reverence into it. Fundamentally a society, which has faith in religion, believes in their own deities or gods and goddesses and pay their homage to them. Apart from ritual commodities, mantras and its chanting, yantras or mandalas play a special and important role in ritual ceremony. It is considered that if mantras are devatas (deities) then yantras are the abode of them. Without yantras, the ritual of deities remains incomplete. In order to attain perfection in worship, it is suggested that puja with yantras of their related deities is more beneficial. This book comprises of yantras used for all major gods, goddesses and deities accomplished with meaningful colour and geometrical composition. A Place to Live: Contemporary Tamil Short Fiction
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143031597; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
Innumerable strands of ethnic, regional and universal experiences are woven together in this collection of fine short fiction spanning four decades—1960_1990—in which the short story emerged as the definitive genre of modern Tamil literature. Twenty-nine famous names are represented here—from Rajanarayanan to Paavannan and many others who have encapsulated the joys, sorrows and peculiar challenges of life in Tamil Nadu. Taken together, these stories represent a certain world view in which old ideas of honour and prestige, and the attitude of resignation—to fate and to social hierarchies—are yielding place to an ethic of struggle and strategic compromise. The language itself is transformed in the process, churning up a new idiom that loses none of its freshness or vitality in translation. Printed Pages: 304. 002765

Economics of Indo-Soviet Trade 1953-90
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1992; 8121203945; Hardcover; New; New;
The total value of Indo-Soviet trade which was barely Rs. 0.22 crore in 1950-51 had a quantum jump to Rs. 3,457.97 crore in 1984. the book undertakes a Cost benefit analysis of Indo-Soviet trade in the context of India's planned economic development. This spectacular half decades is supposed to provide an excellent example of fruitful trade and economic co-operation between the two Countries with different social systems. Under the self-balancing Rupee payments mechanism the trade between the two countries that now a qualitative, though not a Quantitative plateau. Added to this, there was an appreciable amount of economic assistance extended to India by the USSR, that gave further stimulus to growth in trade between the two countries. Many doubts have been raised regarding the overall Benefits of Indo-Soviet trade to India. The doubts center round the questions like whether India is losing valuable free Foreign Exchange as a result of its trade diversion from the convertible Currency areas, whether India is Trading at a Loss in terms of prices, whether India is getting products of comparable quality through its imports from the Ussr and Eastern Europe. The author has undertaken an in-depth Study of the above aspects in a comprehensive manner with the Help of considerable amount of data based on his perceptions of detailed statistics. The broad judgement, after considering all factors, have been that Indo-Soviet bilateral trade has, on the whole, benefited India during the period under study. But the author casts doubt whether a Solid Foundation for future development of this trade has been laid. Due to Structural changes in both countries, the strict complementarity is on the wane. The problem of accumulating surpluses may assume serious dimensions in future, leading to perversion of trade practices such as switch trade, artificial manipulation of prices and exchange rate, etc. The practice of rupee payment agreements should be examined thoroughly and quite seriously. The author observed that in early 80's time was ripe for switching over to multilateral convertibility from the clutches of bilateralism in the matter of Indo-Soviet trade agreements. The author feels happy that subsequent developments in USSR in very recent Times only highlight his conclusions and predictions.Printed Pages: 270. 105752

Telecommunications Industry in India: State, Business and Labour in a Global Economy
Social Science Press and Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8187358424; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Telecommunications Industry in India represents the first comprehensive study of a state-run enterprise in the telecommunications industry. The study traces over a period of half a century (1948-2009) the growth and decline of Indian Telephone Industries (ITI). At the heart of the monograph stands one central interrogation: How does the socio-technical system of production in a state-controlled firm shape the relations linking the four main actors: the state, management, union and workers? The original contribution of this book lies in combining business history and labour history within a single conceptual framework. The author evaluates the broader conclusions about the telecommunications industry and public sector through the lens of an individual firm to arrive at a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics of change in the globalizing Indian economy. The work is well in command of the literature on the global business history counterparts of ITI in the telecommunications industry. It is further strengthened by the use of French material on the subject which is now accessible for the first time in English. ‘This is an impressive achievement that fills a major gap in the literature, that is genuinely inter-disciplinary, and that calls on a range of Francophone literature on the sociology of industry and work that is seldom cited in studies of Indian industry.’ Printed Pages: 690. 033893

Mila in Love
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0143030191; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
She was out shopping in some kind of diaphanous drapery when she was spotted by an olive-hued, savagely handsome sheikh, also out for a day’s shopping. Carried off in one swoop to his luxurious tent, she was made junior assistant to his fourth wife and lived her days in delirious happiness, except when she wondered if her classmates—Ritu in particular—ever thought of her, the jealous cats . . .’ Welcome to the dream world of Sharmila, twenty-something spinster. Ruthlessly wry and comically self-deprecating, this modern maiden entertains herself not with Bombay social dos but with florid fantasies of Rayhaan, family friend and mouth-watering Parsi-Punjabi hunk. Sharmila has secretly loved Ray ever since she was gawky, thirteen-year-old Mila and he was enamoured of her mother. Yet Ray disappeared, leaving Mila to endure a series of misfortunes with only an uncle for comfort. A sorry mixture of her father’s pouty mistress, her mother’s descent into madness and her tyrannical granny culminates in tragedy, and Mila can take no more. Her uncle persuades her to study abroad. Playing gamely along with her sexually experienced roommate and sexually impatient boyfriend, Mila just doesn’t fit into California. Back she goes, to nibble jalebis and wallow in the Sunday papers. She only has one dream left; how can she make it come true? A stunning second novel by one of India’s most accomplished writers, Mila in Love is by turns hilarious, heartbreaking and psychologically deadly—Jane Austen meets Adrian Mole. What’s So Great About Christianity
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 8179928314; Softcover; New;
Is Christianity obsolete? Can an intelligent, educated person really believe the Bible? Or do the atheists have it right? Has Christianity been disproven by science, debunked as a force for good, and discredited as a guide to morality?Bestselling author Dinesh D’Souza (What’s So Great About America) looks at Christianity with a questioning eye, but treats atheists with equal skepticism. The result is a book that will challenge the assumptions of both believers and doubters and affirm that there really is, indeed, something great about Christianity.Provocative, enlightening, a twenty-first-century successor to C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity, Dinesh D’Souza’s What’s So Great About Christianity is the perfect book for the seeker, the skeptic, and the believer who wants to defend his faith.Printed Pages: 368. 105376

Chaudhvin Ka Chand: The Original Screenplay
Om Books International; New Delhi, India; 9789380070988; First Edition; Softcover; New;
Guru Dutt's career as a filmmaker was buffeted by extreme reversals of fortune. Within eight short months of the box office debacle of Kaagaz Ke Phool, Guru Dutt released his next production, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), an epic romance that proved tremendously popular. The film's thematic nucleus is the deep emotional connection between two friends, Aslam and Pyaare Miyan, which is put to the test when they fall in love with the same woman. Chaudhvin Ka Chand presents romantic intensity and fraternal sacrifice with heightened emotionality but also dries out the moistness with splashes of well-scripted humor. The story's appeal is enhanced by director M. Sadiq, a Bollywood veteran from the 1940s, who imbues this Lucknowi tale with the honor and tahzeeb of a bygone era. Chaudhvin Ka Chand: The Original Screenplay archives the screenplay of this film and also incorporates insightful interviews of actors Waheeda Rehman and Farida Dadi, production associate Shyam Kapoor, make-up man Baburao Pawaskar and costume designer Bhanu Athaiya. Guru Dutt's movies determined the trajectory of many a film artiste's success story and his artful presentation of ideas shaped the course of Hindi films, this verity is examined in an essay by authors Dinesh Raheja and Jitendra Kothari. The films made under the aegis of Guru Dutt Films Pvt. Ltd. are an ineluctable part of Hindi cinema's Belle Époque and this book is one of a compendium on three ageless classics - Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Kaagaz Ke Phool. Key Features: Screenplays are a new genre of publication Exclusive interviews with the cast and crew Extended analysis and commentary on the filmmaker's idiom Dialogues in English translation.Printed Pages: 254. 105163

Predictive Astrology: An Insight
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 812081388X; Third Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
Astrology can be considered a useful branch of knowledge only if its concepts and principles could be applied to assess the personality and life of a person, and to look into the years ahead to tell him as to what is in store for him. An attempt has been made in this work to clarify the concepts with regard to the Signs, Planets, and Houses in simple and readable language. These are the building blocks of the foundation on which an edifice of sound analytical knowledge of predictive astrology may rest. What each of these factors represents, what its characteristics are and what the postulates and rules are relating to each of them have been clearly enunciated. Further the results and effects of interaction of these factors have also been brought out in sufficient detail. To keep the bulk of the work within limits, generally definitions and commonly known or found facts have been dispensed with. Thus, this is not a primer. It is meant for a person who, having found the subject interesting and obtained its elementary knowledge, wishes to delve deeper in it in a systematic manner. The Signs, Houses and Planets are the three basic factors which need to be understood clearly for developing successful predictive ability. In PREDCTIVE ASTROLOGY--AN INSIGHT, rules and facts pertaining to each of these factors have been given and the effect of one factor on the other has been analysed in a very comprehensible and instructive manner. For timing the events in the life of a person correctly, the Vimshottari Dasa System has been rationalised to fit the calendar in vogue and details of supportive transit indications have also been given. An Analytical Study of Four Nikayas
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8121510678; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The first four Nikaya-texts belonging to the Suttapitaka of the Pali Tipitaka which contains the sacred sayings of Gotama (Skt. Gautama) Buddha are of inestimable value since they provide important source-materials to study the religio-cultural history of the contemporary period. From the sociological point of view too they are of utmost significance, because they vividly present the daily life of the people of ancient India. Hence the importance of the Nikayas can neither be gainsaid nor exaggerated. In fact, this work contains an outline study of the four Nikayas, namely, Dighanikaya, Majjhimanikaya, Samyuttanikaya and Anguttaranikaya, which belong to the Theravada Pali Canon, on some select aspects in five chapters and three appendices treating of the age of the Nikayas, comparative study between the Sanskrit/Chinese Agamas and Pali Nikayas, their language, Buddha’s discourses to the laity, teachings of Early Buddhism under the threefold division of Sila, Samadhi and Panna, discussions on administrative, social and economic conditions of ancient India, Historical and geographical materials found in the Nikayas, mutual relations of the treatment of similes in these texts. It also includes brief contents of the Suttas of those Nikayas. In the present work, on the whole, an attempt has been made to introduce the first four Nikaya-texts in their entirety. Triolet
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789381523056; Softcover; New;
Why does a love-struck young man lift a living corpse who stares with infinite contempt at man and all his works, including god? The homecoming of a peasant revolutionary after years in prison departs from the expected scenario right from the beginning. What is the secret which almost destroys the hero and all his human relationships? What is the celebrated musician waiting for as age dries up his music and his body tries to clam up his spirit?Dipanjan Rai Chaudhuri searches for answers in another triplet of short novels, probing the human condition in indifferent city streets and turbulent forests, looking at forms of love and betrayal, with the spotlight turning on a whole spectrum of emotions from black despair to euphoric optimism.Each of the three short novellas in Triolet has a plot racing through an air almost of fantasy, across stark cityscapes and turbulent forests, dealing essentially and always with the human condition, the myriad-colored skies between hopelessness and hope, love and betrayal.Printed Pages: 104. 106559

A Triptych
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 8189738399; Softcover; New;
A Triptych presents three intense narratives set in distinctly diverse yet paradoxically convergent worlds, tailing the trajectory of some very unusual bonds: a scavenger, living off the street rejoices in his dark life, covertly watching from his post, a desolate painter whose life is no more than a blank canvas. Their lives are connected by a common fascination for the unknown, and there are startling secrets waiting to be unmasked a young, city-bred girl on a visit to her native village to finalize the sale of common ancestral property is drawn to a neglected ‘statue’ staring unblinkingly at the horizon, perhaps astigmatic like Van Gogh, perhaps an artist and a philosopher slowly defining his vision; a little boy from a sleepy hamlet with a disturbing past and an insignificant present discovers an unusual and enigmatic visitor, who he ‘adopts’ as his own, courting some unforgettable experiences that distill haunting memories for a lifetime.Printed Pages: 124. 106560

Growth Theory: Solow and His Modern Exponents
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 978019567524X; First Edition; Paperback; New;
This presentation of some recent advances in growth theory is motivated by two considerations. First, the works addressed by the book have not received uniform treatment in standard references. It presents a self-contained development of the subject matter including an exposition of the basic mathematics needed to study the subject. At the same time the different concepts are presented with reference to a common platform. Since economics students are exposed to the tools of supply and demand starting from the most elementary of courses, it is expected that they will readily grasp the message of modern growth theory when presented in this familiar language. 019679

Learning to Forget: The Anti-Memoirs of Modernity
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195674332; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Dipankar Gupta argues that modernity should not be equated simply with such factors as industrialization and urbanization, nor with all that is contemporary. Instead, modernity should be seen primarily in terms of social relations, especially in the way it distances itself from the past by emphasizing intersubjectivity between individuals. Intersubjectivity is not understood here as a self-conscious philosophical disposition but rather as an untheorized, taken for granted assumption that premises relationships between individuals in a modern society. For this to happen it is necessary that there be a sharedness of being which is captured in this volume by the term iso-ontology. It is iso-ontology that provides the sociological space necessary for intersubjectivity to be realizable. As none of these can draw on tradition, modernity is best achieved if conditions propitious to forgetting the past are encouraged. In line with this thesis on modernity, Gupta demonstrates how moder nity finds expression in various fields such as fashion and sport, in the distinction between the private and the public, as well as in the new paradigms of development that privilege 'felt aspirations.' However, the volume contends that ethnic movements which may use contemporary technologies of destruction are inherently traditional and anti-modern as they are burdened by memory and are incapable of generating intersubjectivity.This is why every time we are forced to remember, the chances are that at precisely those moments, modernity is pushed back. Abstract and sophisticated, yet illustrative, and accessible, this volume will interest social scientists and researchers and more specifically sociologists, social anthropologists, political scientists, and historians. Anti-utopia: Essential Writings of Andre Beteille
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195672291; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In a career spanning over four decades known for its robustness and versatality, Andre Beteille's contribution and influence on the way sociology is researched, studied, and taught in India has been immense. Beteille's works are characterized by a singular openness to diverse theoretical influences. While drawing upon universal theories and concepts, Beteille's is always rooted in the context of empirical realities. He believes that the search for exotica in Indian society has led to an intellectual overemphasis on caste and a subsequent neglect of class. Characteristically, his own study of the caste system reflects his commitment to the comparative method and not to Indology or the book view. Bringing together the essence of Beteille's ideas and writing, this collection of 19 essays has been specially selected and introduced by Dipankar Gupta. The book is divided into five sections, each of which is devoted to Professor Beteille's varied intellectual interests. The essays range fr om the significance of the comparative method, to ideas of equality and inequality, and finally to issues regarding civil society and institutional well-being. In each instance, Beteille's characteristic signature of blending theory to Indian reality is clearly evident. It is because of his erudition that he is, unarguably, one of the most quoted scholars on India. This collection is also evidence that Beteille's political positions are the result of deep intellectual scrutiny--which is why utopian visions are unappealing to him. His ability to utilize his academic prowess to comment on popular contemporary issues makes Beteille a happy anti-utopian, for he envisions progress and is ever hopeful. In an exclusive interview for the book, Beteille talks at length of his life and career. From his Indo-French background in a small West Bengal district town to his early life in Kolkata, his intellectual jousts with many academic luminaries, his reservations against materialist interpre tations of history and religious interpretations of the world, and his plans for the future, Beteille is remarkably candid and forthright. This and his piece on his two grandmothers, one Bengali Brahmin and the other French, give readers an insight into the private life of a well-known public intellectual. For its scholarship, eloquence, freshness, and enduring relevance, this volume will be indispensable to students, scholars, and teachers of sociology, social anthropology, politics, socio-legal studies, and history, besides an informed general audience. Development Narratives: Walking the Field in Rural West Bengal
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125056254; Hardcover; New; New;
Development is a contested concept involving abundant local-level controversies and gotiations. Its multifarious workings on the ground are not always captured by the academic genre of esearch reports, with their classic methodologies of statistical sampling and objective questionnaires. Instead, this book offers a narrativebased ‘field view’ of development, with the aim of gathering an intimate understanding of development as lived, negotiated and told. Based on the author’s fieldwork in rural West Bengal in the mid-1990s and 2000s, the narratives presented here foreground the political, moral and experiential dimensions of ordinary rural people’s everyday encounters with development.Printed Pages: 240. 101753

The Calling of History: Sir Jadunath Sarkar and His Empire of Truth
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8178244691; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 22 Cm
A leading scholar in early-twentieth-century India, Sir Jadunath Sarkar (1870–1958) was knighted in 1929 and became the first Indian historian to gain honorary membership in the American Historical Association. By the end of his lifetime, however, he had been marginalized by the Indian history establishment, as postcolonial historians embraced alternative approaches in the name of democracy and anti-colonialism. The Calling of History examines Sarkar’s career—and poignant obsolescence—as a way into larger questions about the discipline of history and its public life. Through close readings of more than twelve hundred letters to and from Sarkar, along with other archival documents, Chakrabarty demonstrates that historians in colonial India formulated the basic concepts and practices of the field via vigorous—and at times bitter and hurtful—debates in the public sphere. He shows that because of its non-technical nature the discipline as a whole remains susceptible to pressure from both the public and the academy even today. Methodological debates and the changing reputations of scholars like Sarkar, he argues, must therefore be understood within the specific contexts in which particular histories are written.Printed Pages: 304. 102280

Tattvabodha: Essays from the Lecture Series of the National Mission for Manuscripts, Volume 4
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789380829098; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The National Mission for Manuscripts was established in February 2003 by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India with the purpose of locating, documenting, preserving and disseminating the knowledge content of India's handwritten manuscripts, said to be the largest collection of handwritten knowledge documents in the world. While looking ahead to reconnect with the knowledge of the past, the Mission is in the process of trying to re-contextualize the knowledge contained in manuscripts for the present and the future generations. The Mission launched a lecture series titled "Tattvabodha" in January 2005. Since then, a monthly lecture series is organized in Delhi and other academic centres all over the country. Tattvabodha has established itself as a forum for intellectual discourse, debate and discussion. Eminent scholars representing different aspects of India's knowledge systems have addressed and interacted with highly receptive audiences over the course of the past few years. The present volume, fourth in this series, comprises 12 lectures delivered under Tattvabodha lectures series. A glance at the list of contributors will reveal that the Mission has had the privilege of hosting the finest exponents of Indian culture and the compilation of their lectures makes for invaluable literature. These well-researched papers talk about ancient texts like the lost texts of the Vishishtadvaita philosophy, the Kalpagamasamgraha written by Aryadasa which is a commentary on Vedic text, and the manuscripts on the Natyashastra and its text. The lucidly presented studies include an interesting textual criticism and critical reading of the text Abhijnanashakuntala by Kalidasa. They examine concepts such as that of Vak with special reference to Bhartrihari that involves a detailed scrutiny of the concept as understood in the Vedas and till Bhartrihari's time, and the Advaita concept as available in Vedic hymns. They deal with the problems involved in editing texts on astrology and manuscripts on music. They include a survey of the manuscripts available in the Himalayan region. A study on original Persian sources to throw light on the India of the past comes in as an attempt to highlight significance of using original sources to understand Indian history. The volume, covering wide-ranging subjects penned by experts in various fields, will surely interest scholars and students of Indology.Printed Pages: 262. 100387
