Notes on the Amaravati Stupa: Rockshelters
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2005; 8180900681; Hardcover; New; New;
Amaravati Stupa deals with the detailed description of the stones; stone excavated by Mr. Sewell, Stones at Bezzwada, addition notes on Amaravati Stupa and lastly. Jaggayyapeta Stupa. This book has 253 description of stones which are excavated from Amaravati. The stones are not all numbered, nor are they all marked on the plan. To avoid further confusion the numbers on the stones are here followed, and a second series, marked B, is interspersed to designate others requiring notice. The recent excavations have converted the site of the tope into a large pit, roughly circular, about 75 yards in diameter, but with extensions outside the circumference at the four cardinal points which render the area somewhat of a square with very irregular sides. The removal of all the central portion of the debris of the tope for ever destroys the chances of getting any idea of its size or structural arrangements, but this was probably effected in the end of the last century. The stones were numbered from the south round by west and north, but many of them have been omitted in this enumeration, for what reason is hard to say. The numbers, have been put on with tar and are daubed over prominent parts of the stones, sometimes across inscriptions, rendering it impossible to get a fac-simile owing to the thickness of the pitch, and sometimes over delicate carving, and so effectually preventing the possibility of taking a clear photograph. The stones excavated by Mr. Sewell and left where he found them have been described among those enumerated on the survey plan. His numbers have mostly been washed off. But a large number of stones, evidently not in situ where he found them he judiciously removed to a small shed built on the north side of the excavation. Mr. Sewell`s accounts of these stones in his report are generally accurate, and therefore a fresh description of them. CONTENTS: List of Plates; Introduction; I. Detailed Description of the Stones II. Stones Excavated by Mr. Sewell III. Stones at Bezzwada IV. Additional Notes V. Jaggayyapeta Stupa. 110738

Expert or Charlatan?: The Rise and Rise of Management Consulting
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789383649068; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The management consulting industry is a leading component of the world’s knowledge economy permeating every segment of industry, commerce and government service. A multi-billion dollar phenomenon, it has yielded its own body of knowledge and set of practices. Exponents do make a lot of money for the consulting businesses they serve. What is not always understood, or transparent, is the value clients receive. This book seeks to make good that deficiency in our perception of the profession.Leaning on his deep and wide-ranging experience, Dr John Louth seeks to lift the lid on the management consulting profession in a critically reflective and accessible manner. With vignettes and examples drawn from his own experience and practice, he dissects the rational explanations usually provided by practitioners. He calls for restraint and self-awareness from both client and consultant, and advocates the reform of a profession that seems increasingly powerful and unregulated.Dr Louth explores the management consulting profession on its own terrain, through its own language and discourses. He disentangles the management consultant’s notions of "strategy," "risk management," "change" and "project management" so that these become meaningful to the layperson. Given the complexity that dominates the global geopolitical system and international economy, he asks how management consulting diagnoses can be effective in an uncertain and highly contingent world. Towards a Theology of Universality: John Wesley's Socio-Economic, Political and Moral Insights on British Class and Indian Caste Distinctions ( Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 5)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789351480112; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Theology is a Universal phenomenon, which can be developed by anyone, from any where to explore relationships with God and fellow beings, in order to address any issue relating to human rights and dignity. `Theology of Universality' is a power, a power for those who have been politically oppressed economically exploited and socially discriminated since ages in the past, to enable them to see a common ground for a common humanity. It is to empower the powerless, to be united for a common cause irrespective of their caste/class, colour, creed and religion.The Book examines Theology of Universality from a Christian perspective in general, with a special focus on John Wesley's Theology. It is an attempt to unfold his theological convictions, which inspired him to develop his theological response to the Class Distinctions in Society and the slave trade to particular during the Eighteenth Century. Further, it unfolds Wesley's Theology in Indian context, to see how it can be put to action to confront the evils like Status quo: Caste Discrimination in Social, Economic, Political and Religious chains of Hinduism.Therefore, Universal implications are drawn from Wesley's Theology of justice, love, compassion, equality, human dignity and image of God to the Indian context. Thus the Author presents a broad solution to have a common humanity so that everyone can live with dignity. It is also a Universal torch that projects a light that will enshrine any sensible person in India to be a positive voice to talk about God. It encourages them to understand that human dignity is the right of all to the `Liberated HARI-JANAS' transformed children of God in the modern Indian society.Printed Pages: 520. 106405

Indian Materia Medica (With Ayurvedic, Unani-Tibbi, Siddha, Allopathic, Hemeopathic, Naturopathic and Home Remedies, Appendices and Indexes), 2 Vols
Chaukhamba Orientalia; Delhi, India; 2010; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The third edition of this admirable Book which is now being presented has been anxiously awaited by students and practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine. The Indian systems of medicine both Ayurvedic and Tibbi even now give Medical relief to a very large section of the population in our vast country especially in the rural areas. These are also believed to be effective by a large section of the urban population and even by the intelligentsia. These systems have continued to be useful and popular in spite of the fact that during the British regime Western Medicine was chiefly the system of medical relief and Indian Medicine was not encouraged. The Indian Materia Medica contains about 2,000 drugs, the majority of which are of vegetable origin. During the time of the Great Ashoka The Hindu Materia Medica contained about 700 vegetable drugs which were used by the Vaidyas. They were mostly cultivated in gardens all over the country and time of collection, the parts used, methods of curing and preserving were well known. Since the number of drugs commonly used in those days was not large no elaborate descriptions were given with regard to their identification. The student of medicine used to live with his Guru in the Gurukulas and received practical training in connection with the identification and proper time of collection. In the course of time more and more vegetable herbs growing in different parts of India were gradually included in the indigenous Materia Medica but unfortunately the standards of purity and their correct identification did not keep pace with expansion. From a perusal of the pages in the two volumes of this book readers would get the feeling that The Author has tried to supply missing information. The author has dealt with the section of herbs and their use in medicine in a very informative and at the same time lucid manner which will appeal even to practitioners of western medicine. It is needless to emphasize the rich herbal resources of the vast sub-continent and its varying climatic zones with variety of vegetation ranging from the alpine to the tropical regions. Their exploitation in the interest of the suffering humanity is very important. This book will have served its purpose if the attention of all interested in the art of healing is attracted to this aspect.Printed Pages: 2287. 100759

Jaina sculptures. 8. Sculptures of minor divinities. 9. Sculptures of devotees. 10. Sculptures of devotees. Conclusion. Glossary. Bibliography. Index.The Vijayanagara Empire with its capital at Hampi in Karnataka was founded by Harihara I of the Sangama dynasty around 1336 A.D. to preserve the Hindu Dharma their prevailing culture, social order and check the onslaughts of Islam in South India. The Vijayanagara emperors and their feudatories were highly learned persons and they did their best to sustain political freedom, preservation and popularization of Santana Hindu Dharma art literature, architecture, paining etc. Due to their characteristic tolerance and the compromising attitude of rulers, sculptures of different schools of thought flourished within their empire.The Vijayanagara sculptures of Hampi (1336 to 1565 A.D.) had different religious influences as reflected in the sculptural representations of the prevailing faiths-Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Jainism. The present study on the Vijayanagara Sculptures at Hampi is grouped into five chapters. The introductory chapter deals with the sites and the environment covering Anegundi, Kamalpur, Kadirampura, Malapangudi, Ananthasayanagudi, Naganahalli, Hospet and Timmalapura. The second chapter is devoted to the historical perspective which shows that the foundation of the Vijayanagara empire in the 14 century was an epoch making event, not only in the history of Karnataka, but also of the whole of South India. It reveals that its founders were inspired by patriotic ideals embodied with the spirit of freedom and determination to sacrifice anything on that account. It covers from Harihara (1336 A.D.) to Sadasivaraya (1570 A.D.). The third chapter reflects on the art traditions prior to Vijayanagara. The Chalukyas (c. 450-755 A.D. were a great power in South India and the magnificent sculptures of Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal are due to their patronage. The sculptural art which flourished during the Vijayanagara period, as finds mention in the fourth chapter, was influenced by the literary works like the Vedas, Puranas, Epics and canons on iconography as codified in the Agamas. Chapters five, six and seven abundantly dwell on the Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jaina sculptures respectively. Minor divinities and devotees find description in the last two chapters of the book. The book is richly illustrated with plenty of sculptures of the various Gods. Printed Pages: 259. 110677

Investment as a Drive of Economic Growth
Kalpaz Publications/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 9789351281498; Hardcover; New; New;
The growth of the economy is reflected through the rise in incomes of the people, but development is a wider term, which includes both growth and qualitative improvement in the standard of living of the people and a better distribution of incomes. Development thus involves a rise in the level of income and the level of investments leads to better standard of living in general through growth plus socio-economic changes and development. The inflation is creeping up, to almost 8 percent at times, and this means that the value of money saved goes down instead of going up. In today's less income growth and highly increasing cost of living economy, one has to know how to use his/her savings or idle funds to generate higher returns. A bewildering range of investment alternatives is available. Savings form an important part of the economy of any nation. With the savings invested in various options available to the people, the money acts as the driver for growth of the country. Indian financial scene too presents a plethora of avenues to the investors. Though certainly not the best or deepest of markets in the world, it has reasonable options for an ordinary man to invest his savings. At present an individual has a variety of investment opportunities. As there are different types of investment channels, public get confused when and where they plan to make investment, by selecting the best sort of investment and rejecting the rest is very difficult to the investors. Hence one must pay much attention as regards to investment decision. An investment decision must be made with definite objectives. Before proceeding, the investor should be very clear as to specific requirements and aspirations. It could be a return or capital appreciation or safety or tax relief or any other peculiar factor that a particular investor desires. Depending upon that and on the basis of the objectives, investors make the investment decision by selection. Such a process offers the silver lining of golden return to investors. People invest to multiply their savings in order to fulfill their aspirations for a bigger house, a higher education for their children or a secured retirement for them. To achieve these objectives, the investor has a wide variety of products and services to choose from. One can deposit savings in a bank account, buy shares or bonds on the stock exchange, or buy a life insurance policy or invest in a retirement plan among other investment alternatives. This book highlights the different investment avenues available to the investors, investigates the reasons behind the investment decisions, and identifies the factors influencing the preference of the investors. It also analyzes the investors' attitudes towards a specific investment pattern and puts forth the problems faced by the professionals in the process of building their investment pattern. Saving entails a tradeoff because it requires consuming less now in exchange for later consuming more. While those who sacrifice to save now can themselves enjoy higher consumption in the future, some of the resulting increase in the nation's stock and the related income will also benefit future generations. Thus current saving and investment decision have profound implication for the level of wellbeing in the future and current generations are in a sense stewards of the economy on behalf of future generations.Printed Pages: 223. 106132
