Murals for Goddesses and Gods: The Tradition of Osakothi Ritual Painting in Orissa
Aryan Books International; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8173050953; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
This monograph Murals for Goddesses and Gods is a magnificent document of India's ritual painting, based on systematic study of the osakothi (osa penance, kothi sacred space) murals or Orissa. It explores the rare rich and meaningful and fast disappearing ritual art of mural painting. The antiquity of this art can be traced to the prehistoric rock-cave paintings of Mirzapur, Singhapuri, Bhimbetka, Jhiri, and elsewhere in India. A close parallel is seen in the contemporary ritual relating to Rathwa mural paintings Gujarat. In both cases there is transformation and re-enlivenment of the visual image. This materials are organized in seven chapters in the following order: the sources for ritualistic folk paintings in south Orissa and the worship of painted icons; the osakothi custom, terms and legends; the basic forms of osakothi shrines and their murals; iconography of osakothi murals and the legends; the osakothi ritual; the painters of osakothi shrines, their communities and major works; and contemporary trends in the osakothi tradition. By way of general observation the authors make a broad claim about its uniqueness, similarities and historic connection with other traditions in and around Orissa. To the authors of this carefully researched and richly illustrated monograph, the osakothi complex is one of India's finest living traditions concerning around annually produced folk murals of goddesses and gods, unrecorded so far. Prefaced by Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, a foremost authority on Indian art and culture, this work will fascinate not only the students of art, religions and Indian civilization but also everyone with an inquiring mind. Hojman, University of Liverpool, UK 'In fewer than 300 pages Dr Siggel offers us a comprehensive and superbly written treatment of development micro and open macroeconomics from a policy perspective. Yogi Impressions Books Pvt. Ltd.; Mumbai, India; 2015; 8188479446; First Edition; Softcover; New;
The Power of Now has in a short time already proven to be one of the greatest spiritual books written in recent times. It contains a power that goes beyond words, and it can lead us to a much quieter place beyond our thoughts, a place where our thought-created problems dissolve, and we discover what it means to create a liberated life.Throughout The Power of Now, there are specific practices and clear keys that show us how to discover for ourselves the "grace, ease and lightness” that come when we simply quiet our thoughts and see the world before us in the present moment.Practicing the Power of Now is a carefully arranged series of excerpts from The Power of Now that directly give us those exercises and keys. Read this book slowly, or even just open it at random, reflect on the words, reflect even on the space between the words and – maybe over time, maybe immediately – you’ll discover something of life-changing significance. You`ll find the power, the ability to change and elevate not only your life, but your world as well.It is here, now, in this moment: the sacred presence of your Being. Stillness Speaks
Yogi Impressions Books Pvt. Ltd.; Mumbai, India; 2015; 8188479462; First Edition; Softcover; New;
This long-awaited second book by renowned spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle provides a “going deeper” into the teaching already so eloquently and clearly expressed in his first book The Power of Now. Although the teaching takes on new depth, added dimensions and specific focuses, it is even easier to grasp since Eckhart writes in short, clear entries ranging from one line to one page. Each entry is concise and complete in itself, even though they have been astutely organized into 10 topic clusters ranging from “Stillness & Silence” and “Beyond the Thinking Mind” to “Relationships” and “Suffering & the End of Suffering”. Whether read individually, as a topic cluster, or in their totality, these entries take on a Tranformative power that can awaken the reader to Self-Realization, to their true nature.While spiritually profound, Stillness Speaks is also intensely practical. Eckhart tells us how to be with another in a relationship, which can contain and weather all things, how to “sit” with a dying person, where to find wisdom, how to free ourselves of guilt, and how to control the runaway-thinking mind.Printed Pages: 152. 103469

The No. 1 New York Times bestseller, The Power of Now is a guide to spiritual enlightenment from a man who is emerging as one of this generation`s clearest, most inspiring teachers. Eckhart Tolle is not aligned with any particular religion but does what all the great masters have done: shows that the way, the truth, and the light already exist within each human being. There is no need to look elsewhere.During February-March 2002, Eckhart traveled to India to enlighten people on the spiritual path through a series of talks in Chennai and Mumbai, and an eight-day Spiritual Retreat held in Rishikesh. The Indian edition of The Power of Now, already in its twelfth reprint, has sold thousands of copies. The Hindi translation of this book will spread his teaching to an even wider audience.At the heart of this book, which has already been translated into almost all the major languages of the world, is Eckhart’s own story of early despair that culminated in a life-transforming experience of enlightenment at the age of twenty-nine. He emerged to share insights on the perils of the mind, the power of the present, and the accessibility of one’s true nature.Printed Pages: 216. 103520

Chna After 1978: Craters on the Moon
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125039538; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
The People’s Republic of China celebrated its 60th anniversary on 1 October 2009. December 2008 marked 30 years since the Chinese Communist Party’s decision to launch ‘market reforms’. The breathtakingly rapid economic growth witnessed after 1978 has attracted worldwide attention. But the condition of more than 350 million workers is abysmal, especially that of the migrants among them. The stagnation of peasant incomes had fuelled a huge, historically unprecedented migration into the cities—over the past 25 years, some 150-200 million persons, including women, migrated from the countryside to the urban areas in search of jobs. Why do the migrants put up with so much hardship in the urban factories? Has post-reform China forsaken the earlier goal of ‘socialist equality’? What has been the contribution of rural industries to regional development, alleviation of poverty and spatial inequality, and in relieving the grim employment situation? How has the meltdown in the global economy in the second half of 2008 affected the domestic economy? What of the current leadership’s call for a ‘harmonious society’? Does it signal an important ‘course correction’? Printed Pages: 326. 032731

Global Economic and Financial Crisis: Essays from Economic and Political Weekly
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8125036997; First Edition; Paperback; New; 15 Cms x 23 Cms
A collapse in housing prices in the United States in the middle of 2007 led to a rise in defaults in loan repayments and then rapidly to major losses in financial institutions across the world. The financial crisis of 2007 and 2008 took little time to turn into the global economic crisis of 2008 and 2009, leaving no country and no sector untouched and has become the worst contraction since the Depression of the 1930s. The structure of financial “innovation” that drove growth for close to a quarter of a century has turned out to be a house of cards. Governments and central banks are now rethinking the organization and role of banks. The incentives given to executives of the financial institutions to promote profits at all costs have been put under scrutiny. This volume puts together a collection of essays on a number of aspects of the global economic and financial crisis that were first published in the Economic & Political Weekly in early 2009. Economists and policy makers from across the world cover six areas from a global and Indian perspective. One set of articles discusses the structural causes of the financial crisis. A second focuses on banking and offers solutions for the future. A third examines the role of the US dollar in the unfolding of the crisis. A fourth area of study is the impact on global income distribution. A fifth set of essays takes a long-term view of policy choices confronting the governments of the world. A separate section assesses the downturn in India, the state of the domestic financial sector, the impact on the informal economy and the reforms necessary to prevent another crisis. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in and concerned about the global economic and financial crisis. Printed Pages: 368. 031486

The Knight Writings
Zen Publications; Mumbai, India; 81-901059-04-8; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Knight Writings chronicles the internal struggle of a spiritual journey — the personal battle to bring the principles of truth and love to places locked inside by fear. This book asks its readers to look closely at their personal and spiritual beliefs and the gap between them. It proposes that spiritual truths cannot truly be known prior to the acceptance of oneself personally. Not for the spiritually squeamish, the knight’s path to God passes through the most distressing territory of all — the ego. Despite the difficulty of this course, readers may find that this is the only way to make something that doesn’t exist disappear. Printed Pages: 88. 000707

Confessions of a Renegade: Peace Corps Years
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121212324; Hardcover; New; New;
The American Peace Corps was a program of President John F. Kennedy. It sent mostly young idealistic American youths to developing countries around the world to work in various development oriented programs for a period of two years. The program operated in India from 1961 until 1976. India was a major country for the Peace Corps and several groups of volunteers worked in agricultural development programs in Punjab. This book is the story of one American Peace Corps volunteer who lived and worked in Banga Block of Jalandhar district in Punjab. The group was India 53 which arrived in India in June 1968. After additional training at the Gram Sevak Training Center in Batala, the 23 volunteers in the group were sent to different development blocks in Jalandhar and Kapurthala districts. Projects included new high yielding varieties of wheat, rice and other crops. It was also a time when farmers in Punjab were being encouraged to grow soyabeans as an alternative to rice in the summer season. Perhaps the cultural exchange aspects of the Peace Corps were equally if not more important than the technical aspects. Volunteers made many friends in the villages where they lived and the surrounding areas. Indians learned something about Americans and the volunteers learned a vast amount about India and their local area. This changed the lives of many young Americans and greatly enriched the United States in terms of having citizens knowledgeable about distant and remote parts of the world. Unfortunately, the United States Congress was not willing to spend much money on such an enterprise. While vast amounts of money went into the US military, the Peace Corps was run on a shoe string. It is probably one of the cheapest programs ever launched by the US Government. Eddie James Girdner was inculcated into the idiocy of rural life at an early age in North Missouri. After his Great Escape to the University of Missouri, and a degree in Physics, he served as an American Peace Corps Volunteer in Punjab, India (1968-1970), then became a sailor in the US Navy for five years. He earned a doctorate degree in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has taught political science in the United States, Cyprus and Turkey for more than twenty-five years.Printed Pages: 324. 106296

Ethnographic Survey in South India
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2005; 8190208659; Hardcover; New; New;
Under the scheme for a systematic ethnographic survey of the whole of India, a superintendent for each State and Government was appointed to carry out the work of the survey in addition to his other duties. For the issue of this book the time is not yet ripe, and, as an ad interim, measure, I send forth the present farrago in the hope that it may be of some little use and interest to those who are engaged in the study of ethnological and sociological questions in the arm-chair or the field. For such, rather than for the general public, it is intended. The chapter devoted to omens, evil eye, etc., is intended only as a mere outline sketch of a group of subjects, which, if worked up in detail, would furnish material for a very bulky volume. CONTENTS: Preface; List of Plates; 1. Some Marriage Customs 2. Death Ceremonies 3. Omens, Evil Eye, Charms, Animal Superstitions, Sorcery, etc., Votive Offerings 4. Deformity and Mutilation 5. Torture in Bygone Days, and a Few Stray Survivals 6. Corporal punishment in Vernacular Schools 7. Slavery 8. Making fire by Friction Flint and Steel 9. Fire-walking 10. Hook-swinging 11. Infanticide 12. Meriah Sacrifice 13. On Dress 14. Names of Natives 15. Couvade (Hatching) 16. Earth-Eating 17. Boomerang 18. Why Translation Matters
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8125041672; Hardcover; New; New;
Why Translation Matters argues for the cultural importance of translation, and for a more encompassing and nuanced appreciation of the translator’s role. As the acclaimed translator Edith Grossman writes in her introduction, "My intention is to stimulate a new consideration of an area of literature that is too often ignored, misunderstood, or misrepresented." For Grossman, translation has a transcendent importance: "Translation not only plays its important traditional role as the means that allows us access to literature originally written in one of the countless languages we cannot read, but it also represents a concrete literary presence with the crucial capacity to ease and make more meaningful our relationships to those with whom we may not have had a connection before. Translation always helps us to know, to see from a different angle, to attribute new value to what once may have been unfamiliar. As nations and as individuals, we have a critical need for that kind of understanding and insight. The alternative is unthinkable." Printed Pages: 101977
