The Tarkabhasa of Keshavamishra: With the Commentary of Govardhana and Critical and Explanatory Notes of Shivaram Mahadeo Paranjape
Parimal Publications; Delhi, India; 2005; 817110262X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The spiritual thought, in vast and vivid manner, propounded by the great Indian seers is called Darsana. At the same time Darsana also means 'vision of truth and reality.' Indian thinkers were mainly concerned with the fundamental questions of existence : what is real or reality? What is the real nature of human being?. 'How has the world come to be?.' Is it created?. If it is created then who is the creator? What is knowledge etc.?. Basically all these questions and their answers are mere blend of all those contemporary concerns which couldn't be answered by this worldly people. Tarkabhasa, a text, presents a detail discussion on Nyaya theory. It is known as an elementary treatise, a key for the beginners of the Science of Nyaya. (P 160 of the present book). It presents the subject matter in an easy language. The Tarka-bhasa with the commentary of Govardhana and critical and explanatory notes of S.M. Paranjape was first published in 1894. In the present edition, the editor has given a brief introduction of the subject matter and has put forward the useful notes of S.M. Paranjape alone with the text so that the students and advanced scholars could refer to the notes directly while reading the text.Printed Pages: 184. 100613

Helplessness
Gen Next Publication/Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789380222523; Softcover; New;
The novel 'Helplessness' is a strong exposition of highly educated, gentle husband men's suffering their inner conflict, their heartfelt anguish, their chest rendering pain and the wail of their miserable condition in a very pathetic manner living among the civilized human society of the world. It well exposes the helpless condition of a gentle husband person in t he society which is known as the man dominant one. It has also a slight satirical attack upon the modern legal system prepared particularly for women security, its drawbacks and its negative aspects. The expression of vehement mental anguish and poignant wail of most prestigiously gentle husband man like Dr. Nilay is the key note of the novel. Besides these things the novel contains a very superb glorification of womanhood as well as of a good wife in the life of any man. Several allusion s and quotations are full of enormous practical wisdom. It also deals with the unique description of love, its power, it s validity and its all pervasive force. I hope every sensible reader will appreciate this work. Wishing for the bright future! , About the author:- lt is possible to say something about the man who lives in the worldly • boundaries. But a person who has gone beyond the conventional reach how a man like me can describe him. But as he urged me to write something about him, so I am telling as I have been seeing him for last 20 years in his friendly guidance. Dr. Shiv Mohan Mishra, most popularly known as Abodha on the stages of poet conferences is perhaps a prolific and versatile genius of fiction, poetry and stories bi-lingually. This ambidextrous player of bad mint on is at home in English literature language, Hindi literature, Sanskrit and Great Indian epics as well as unique mythologies of our nation. A unique teacher of English language, literature and a public motivator to success by profession, He is well versed in the appreciation of the obscure meanings related to The Rom Charit Manas by Tulsidas. As a skilled speaker of English, Hindi, Awadhi, Bhojpuri with the alloy of Urdu and Punjabi, he is at home in English grammar and versification. He is a unique moral and spiritual preacher also. Besides these bookish excellences, he possesses a very vast know ledge of worldly affairs and practical skills. In his life, he is simple, frank, natural, straight forward and truthful. I am highly grateful to him for giving me a chance to say about the person who is an enigma for the outer world appearing quite common a man whose inner world is full of t he glorious light of knowledge, generosity and humbleness.Printed Pages: 198. 106115

Archaeology of Karnataka (Pre and Proto History of South Western Region)
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2011; 9788180900969 ; Hardcover; New; New;
Foreword. Acknowledgement. Abbreviations. 1. Introduction. 2. Lower Palaeolithic sites. 3. Middle Palaeolithic sites. 4. Upper Palaeolithic sites. 5. Mesolithic sites. 6. Neolithic sites. 7. Megalithic sites. 8. Chronology. 9. Some aspects of the pre and proto, historic cultures: observations. Appendixes: i. Catalogue of the archaeological sites. ii. Description of the figures. iii. Trial digging at Benakanahalli (Illustrations). iv (a). Report on the fossil sample. iv (b). Report on the faunal remains from Benakanahalli trial digging. Bibliography. Index.Archaeological research in different parts of Karnataka has come a long way over since Meadows Taylor (1842) and Robert Bruce Forte (1881) brought to light sites of pre-historic appendage. Subsequent explorations carried out by various scholars in different geographical zones of Karnataka particularly in the Krishna, Malaprabha, Ghataprabha valleys has revealed significant evidences relating to different category of Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Megalithic cultures. However, comparatively such studies were wanting in the south-western part of Karnataka particularly in the central mountainous region of Western Ghats comprising the districts of Hassan, Chikamagalur and Shimoga popularly called the Malnad Region. But for sporadic discovery of Palaeolithic or Neolithic sites here and there, no systematic studies had been attempted till recently in this monsoon belt of Karnataka.In the light of the background, extensive explorations undertaken by the author in the river valleys of the Upper Cauvery, Tunga, Bhadra, Upper Tungabhadra, Hemavati, Kumudvati, the Vedavati and their tributaries have provided welcome light on various chronological stages of the Palaeolithic cultures and occurrence of a upper Palaeolithic site in the Upper Tungabhadra valley is very significant.Mesolithic tools found as surface finds in different physiographical situations ranging from river valleys to hill tops or gravel beds near dried up water bodies denote a unique characteristics of this culture in the south-western part of Karnataka and exhibits similarity in their typo-technology, rock material to Mesolithic tools reported form sites in the Northern Karnataka region or in the adjacent Tamilnadu, Kerala regions.Interestingly, systematic explorations in the Upper Tungabhadra Valley has yielded substantial number of Neo-Chalcolithic habitation sites with adequate assemblage of pottery of Neolithic-Chalcolithic, Megalithic appendage indicating clearly that these regions were continuously inhabited and helps in reconstructing the processes of transformation from the hunting gathering stage to the food producing or village economy stage, particularly in this hilly country covered with dense forest.The efforts of the author to locate different types of Megalithic Sites in the Upper Cauvery and Upper Tungabhadra region and an occasional site at a higher-altitude of Malnad Hills throws significant light on the selection of locations depending on the availability of suitable rock material, security and economic needs of the erstwhile Megalithic People of the region.This book provides an excellent background for further studies in the region under reference and would be of great interest to the students of pre and proto-history in understanding the lesser known archaeological aspects of the south western part of Karnataka. Gender, Violent Conflict and Development
Zubaan; New Delhi, India; 8189013602; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The last few decades have witnessed growing theoretical and practical concerns with intersections between violent conflict and development. Links between poverty and natural resources have been minutely explored, and attention has also been given to how state collapse and bad governance have contributed to violent conflict. However, gender relations and ideologies have often been overlooked in theorization of these interconnections, as well as in designing development strategies meant to mend the devastating impact that war leaves on a society. This book looks at the intersections between development practice and violent conflict from an explicit gender perspective and situates the fields of inquiry within a global condition of neo-liberal economy and militarism. Using the notions of femininity and masculinity as analytical tools, contributors question theoretical, political and policy approaches pertaining to specific development strategies in times of prolonged violent conflict, transitions to peace, and post-conflict periods. They further analyse various social, cultural, economic and political processes and relations of power that impact upon different groups of women, men and children in the contexts of militarization and violence. Honorary Tiger: The Life of Billy Arjan Singh
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174364056; Hardcover; New; New;
Popularly known as India's latterday Jim Corbett and 'tiger man', 87-year-old Billy Arjan Singh is by any standards an extraordinary man. At Tiger Haven, his home in a magical spot on the edge of the jungle in UP, Singh's experiments with bringing up three orphaned leopards, and also Tara, a tiger cub that he imported from a zoo in England, shot him into both limelight and controversy. His aim was to see if Tara's instincts would make her revert to the wild when she became mature. They did, and over the years, she produced four litters of cubs, thus proving his contention that it is possible to supplement dwindling wild stocks with zoo-born animals. But when it was discovered that the tigress had Siberian genes in her ancestry, he was accused of having introduced a 'genetic cocktail'into the jungle. Undeterred, Singh remained a champion of the forest and its denizens. It was almost entirely due to his advocacy that in 1973 the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, authorized the creation of the Dudhwa National Park. Now, in his eighties, comes recognition for his efforts. In March 2005, he received the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation award - a global honour administered by the World Wildlife Fund, that serves to recognize outstanding contributions in international conservation. In this affectionate biography, the British author Duff Hart-Davis tells the story of a man absolutely dedicated to the cause of animals, who has given fifty years of his own life to their conservation. 8437 Durgabati Ghose; Translated from the Original Bengali Paschimjatriki By Somdatta Mandal; with a Foreword By Ashis Nandy
The Westward Traveller
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125039910; First Edition; Paperback; New; 14 x 22 Cm
In 1923, Durgabati Ghose, an upper middle-class Bengali woman accompanied her husband on a trip across Europe. The Westward Traveller (originally Paschimjatriki) is an enchanting written record of this four-month long sojourn. Filtered through her upper middle-class upbringing and perceptions, the narrative is observant—not only emphasising on a sense of place, space and landscape, but also an aesthetic, intrinsic appreciation of every destination. The writing comes alive in the author’s everyday interactions with ordinary people, be they fellow travellers or hotel owners or even beggars. Focussing on an accurate description of the ‘real world’, she is always concerned with verisimilitude. An interesting fact about this travelogue is that even within its set pattern, it offers nuggets of history. What makes the account endearing is the various examples of intercultural encounters and wry comments, often arising from not knowing the language and making value judgments that can be cited at random. As Ashis Nandy says in his Foreword to this translated work, ‘the way Durgabati recounts her adventures in Europe makes them variations on familiar Bengali domesticity, interpersonal patterns and femininity played outside their natural locale. This gives the travelogue a stamp of predictability and at the same time, a touch of robust, irreverent charm and self-confidence.’ To translate this depiction of Europe in colonial times through the eyes of a modernising Bengali woman has been a ‘labour of love’ for translator Somdatta Mandal. Simple and lucid in style, the work retains the traces of the times in which it was originally written and is faithful to the intention of the narrative. Coloured in the expanding consciousness of an individual woman, exploring previously unknown areas of the world, away from the home and hearth characterised by conventionality, conservatism and domesticity, this travel narrative will be a significant contribution to the history of women’s travel narratives from colonial Bengal. Deprivation: Its Social Roots and Psychological Consequences
Concept Publishing Company Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1995; 8170221625; Hardcover; New; New;
Socio-cultural and economic disadvantage has emerged as a focal theme of study in recent years. Psycho-social deprivation and its consequences have scarcely been systematically studied in the Indian social context where widespread poverty and socio-cultural inequalities play a decisive role in the growth of human personality. The present book brings together a collection of 14 papers by eminent psychologists, sociologists and political scientists read at an interdisciplinary symposium on ‘Psycho-Social Deprivation held at the U.G.C. Centre of Special Assistance on Psychological Study of Social Change and National Development, and Department of Psychology, Allahabad University. The papers included in the book deal with conceptual and methodological issues involved in the study of deprivation and psycho-social consequences of cultural and economic disadvantage in several relevant areas of human functioning. The effects of deprivation in diverse contexts, viz., nutritional deficiency, language deficits, development of congnitive skills, school achievement, motivational and personality changes have been analysed. Finally, and attempt is made to suggest intervention strategies to cope with the problems of socio-economic disadvantage. The book, therefore, should be of immense value for social psychologists, child development and educational psychologists apart from the social scientists who are engaged in studying wider problems of socio-economic inequalities in our country. Rethinking Western India: The Changing Contexts of Culture, Society and Religion
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8125055827; Hardcover; New; New;
While investigating the cultural, social and political dynamics in Maharashtra, Rethinking Western India looks into the relations and processes that make up what are usually thought to be regional problems. The essays show how the regional must be understood in contexts that supersede the region and geographical determinism. The opening essays not only contextualise Maharashtrian texts as coherent wholes, but also the meanings contained within these texts, thereby addressing “the semantics of the social”. A focus on “the mechanics of the social”—the interface of actions that articulate societal relationships at different levels, and of different characters—is attempted by the next set of essays. The concluding essays emphasise how local dynamics are as much a part of forces ostensibly “beyond Maharashtra”, as they are products of dynamics within Maharashtra. There is, therefore, a deep analysis of the social and cultural referents upon which collective identities are built.Printed Pages: 308. 101924

Electoral Processes and Governance in South Asia
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0761935770; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Most South Asian countries—following independence from British rule in the late nineteen forties, and in the case of Nepal, liberation from the autocracy of one family group in 1950—have enjoyed democratic systems of governance at least at some time or the other, often for extended periods of time, and, in a few cases, over the course of their post-independence history. Electoral processes have, however, been found wanting to greater or lesser extents in all these countries. Electoral malpractices are of critical concern to all South Asian countries. It is in this background that the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Kandy,Sri Lanka, with funding from the Ford Foundation, organized in 2002, an international conference on electoral processes and governance in South Asia. The South Asian countries selected for study were Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and papers were presented by experts in the area of electoral processes and governance in these countries. This book, based on the papers originally presented at that conference, seeks to understand electoral processes as they actually operate in South Asia, to discuss the reasons for the flaws in these systems and the degrees of success or failure in attempts at reform. Rising Sun Melting Mists: Knowledge of Self dispels Ignorance
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 9789382788850; Softcover; New;
This book is a collection of articles written over a period of a few years and later put together. The astounding first intimation to the effect that, by the word GOD, all saints and sages of all times have implied the realizable truth of oneself, was received by the author when he was a 35 years old man-of-the-world. The revelation broke upon him with explosive wonderment and delight. How could such an inheritance be forfeited through indifference? He questioned, searched foranswers, contemplated, and tried to shape his life as prompted by the ascending reality of self-enquiry. “In each article, reflection and spontaneous inspiration mingle inextricably” - The Heritage “Enjoy the poetic prose of his soaring thoughts. Each article an Upanishadic Canto” - Swami Chinmayananda, international exponenf of Vedanfa and spirihial master “Beauty of style and power of thought... autherrticity of experience... precision of expression...” - M.R Pandit, Sri Aurobindo Ashram “...conveying profound ideas effortlessly... marvellous book... Each article is a treasure” - The Hindu, leading national daily “Small but profound. One line, one thought, enough to drive one to contemplation, A book to be savoured line by line.” - M.V. Kamath in Bhavan’s Journal “A book of great value... sincerity and intense spiritual aspiration.” - The Theosophist. Printed Pages: 206. 111650

The Dicey Problem of New Age Science
Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 8188071641; Softcover; New;
Order flows from consistent laws. Our understanding of our universe is changing, but Reality behind it is unchanged. Einstein’s relativity amended Newtonian determinism, and was in turn amended by quantum mechanics. Einstein saw a harmonious advance in knowledge, and said, “God does not play dice”; but Stephen Hawking later saw a radical departure, and said, “God is a gambler”.This author, a deep student of philosophy with a moderate background of science, sees in these conflicting conclusions the inevitable distortion when “the relative” is projected on to “the Absolute.” Therefore he says, “Do not worry about God. He is not a visiting player like you and me, but the absolute owner of the casino. When He plays, His ieft hand picks up what His right hand loses, His status remains unaltered. We had better be looking out for ourselves.” The serious point made is that the Absolute includes and exceeds the time-space-causation frame of relativity, and these parameters cannot cross the border.The limitations must be clearly understood.“Time” of physics is enough to study kinetic processes but not to locate the creative potential. That requires “time” of our conscious awareness. But bio-science mistakes consciousness to be a product of brain-cells. In truth, consciousness is the energy, and brain is the equipment through which it manifests.Thus TIME is the Achilles’ heel of physics, and MIND is the Achilles’ heel of biology. The name of Reality is Total Consciousness. It is eternal, Death was never born, and life never died. Printed Pages: 189. 111668

Surya-Siddhanta (Text with English Translation), (Second Edition)
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8183150179; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Surya Siddhanta of Varaha as given in his Panca Siddhantika are almost the same as those of the Khandakhadyaka, it is clear that the old Surya Siddhanta was made up to date by Varaha by replacing the old constants in it by new ones from Aryabhata I's 'midnight' system. A subsequent redactor of the Surya Siddhanta changed the constants as introduced by Varaha by following Brahmagupta's teachings in his Brahmasphuta Siddhanta and the Uttara Khandakhadyaka, Surya Siddhanta is the most important of this class of works and some attempt should yet be made to ascertain its true date. From internal evidence alone Burgess came to the conclusion that the superior limit to its date is 490 A.D. and that the lower limit is 1091 A.D.Printed Pages: 600. 104099

Dimensions of Marriage in Primitive Society, 2 vols
Sundeep Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 1989; 8185066450; Hardcover; New; New;
Ernest Crawley`s predecessors E.B. Taylor and Sir J.G. Frazer, through their researches, had made it amply clear that since the current theories of the origins of marriage were based on superficial knowledge of modes of primitive living and thinking, therefore, were not sound and never to be relied upon. One of the basic contention, in this context, was that that the system of marriage was studies in isolation from the marriage ceremonies. the author of the present book realized this mistake and analyzed the entire phenomenon of marriage in the background of inseparable relation between individual and society. He proceeded from a general study of primitive culture to the study of marriage by probing into the custom of exchange of dress between men and women. His conclusions are `that all cases of the custom yielded the same psychological components as to the relations of the sexes generally and marriage in particular`. The theory of origins of marriage is developed dialling upon various subjects viz. Sexual Taboo, Sexual Relations, Theory of Change and Exchange, Marriage and Its Ceremonies, Husband, Wife and Mother in Law and Parent and Child etc. The book, therefore, covers a very wide range of studies in the field of anthropology, sociology and psychology. The Unforgettable Maharajas-150 Years of Photography
Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8174362959; Hard Cover with a Slipcase; New; New; 12 x 12 Inches
The Maharajas of India were undoubtedly one of the great anachronisms of the twentieth century. They lived in palaces, owned trains, built railway systems, had personal game preserves, found Buckingham Palace too small and-when it caught their fancy-brought a fleet of Rolls-Royces and turned them into garbage collection vans. Among them were enlightened rulers and profligate princes, saints and scoundrels, heroes and cowards, sadists and boors, charmers and eccentrics. Yet whatever they were, in the eyes of the people they ruled they had the divine right to do so. This power, coupled with their enormous wealth and fabulous jewellery, gave the Maharajas a status that made them larger than life. The Unforgettable Maharajas brings an amazing past to life. Its pictures passionately frame the Maharajas' times and lives to commemorate a milestone: 150 years of photography. Drawn from a comprehensive collection of historical photographs from princely India, private collections and the finest photo libraries in the world, this is also the largest selection of royal pictures in any one book. Many years of research and documentation were put into verify their details. The result is a book that conveys the romance that the Maharajas represented to the world and a historical record of an age we will never again see. Among the photographs some have never been printed before, such as the photograph of two English princes dressed as Sikhs, a relaxed Maharaja Bhupindar Singh with his glasses perched on his head, and the famous black buck carriage from Bikaner. After the fall of Chittor to Akbar in 1567, they swore never to return to the citadel till it was freed. In the early 1950's Nehru personally led them back to a free Chittor, but their nomadic habits were too deeply ingrained in them. Printed Pages: 120. 022723

The Greased Cartridge: The Heroes and Villains of 1857-58
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 817436823X; Softcover; New;
In most accounts of the revolt, the greased cartridge has been referred to as the spark and tinder that lit the flames of rebellion. .The greased cartridge - what was it all about? The army so far had been quipped with the smooth-barrelled musket, which had a protracted loading procedure and was not accurate over long ranges. The new Enfield rifles, which were now being issued, had grooved or rifled barrels. This made them more accurate and gave them a longer range. The powder and bullet for the new rifle were put together in a paper cartridge. To load the rifle, the end of the cartridge containing the powder had to be bitten off so that the charge would ignite. The cartridge was then rammed down the muzzle of the rifle.. The grease used was tallow, probably containing both cow and pig fat. To "the cow reverencing Hindu and the pig paranoid Muslims" having to bite this was repellent, defiling and deadly to their religious prospects.' The Revolt of 1857-58 was the biggest and bloodiest conflict against any European colonial power during the nineteenth century. This book is essentially about the heroes - Tatya Tope, Nana Saheb, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Kunwar Singh of Jagdishpur - and not to forget, a few villains. Though the revolt failed in its objective, even in failure it served a grand purpose. It was a source of inspiration for the national liberation movement, which later achieved what the revolt could not. Printed Pages: 168. 108568

The Story of Tea
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174369295; Softcover; New;
The Story of Tea traces the history, myths and rituals of growing and drinking tea from the tea gardens of China to the roadside dhabas of India. Thomas Garraway’s first public sale of tea in England in 1657 was of historic importance. For this he published and distributed a poster … "The leaf is of such known virtues ... that it is sold for twice its weight in silver. It maketh the body active and lusty. It helpeth the headache, giddiness and heaviness thereof. It is very good against stone and gravel, cleaning the kidneys and ureter. It is good against crudities, strengthening the weakness of the Ventricle or Stomack, causing good appetite and Digestion and particularly for men of a corpulent body and such as are great eaters of flesh.… It prevents and cures ague, surfeits… and fevers, by infusing a fit quantity of the leaf, thereby provoking a most gentle vomit… It drives away all pains in the Collick proceeding from wind and purgeth safely the Gall…" So said Thomas Garraway and, indeed, many believed him! Maoist Insurgency and India's Internal Security Architecture
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381411278; Hardcover; New; New;
The Maoists have taken up arms. Their focus is on tribals and lower caste people for support. Stress is on militarisation with hierarchy and building of ‘People’s Guerrilla Army’ capable of destroying the state machinery. Violence and breakdown of law and order is causing loss of innocent lives and damage to property. The book has been covered in five chapters by the contributors. The first chapter deals with the Maoist insurgency in India and analyses the reasons that led to the Communist Party of India (CPI) taking up the cause of the lower castes and scheduled tribes. The second chapter deals with use of air power in combating the Maoist insurgency. The author has suggested deployment of drones to detect insurgent camps in the forests and use of helicopters for evacuation of casualties and other measures to facilitate logistics support for Countering Insurgency. An appraisal of India’s Intelligence agencies has been covered in Chapter Three. The fourth and fifth chapters are concerning the manner in which the United States has reacted after the 9/11 terrorist attack in the USA and how India reacted after the terrorist attack in Mumbai on 26 November 2008. The author has suggested the need to evolve a Comprehensive Internal Security Policy covering all dimensions and all levels -- political, economic and social.Printed Pages: 148. 103302
