Rivers in Hindu Mythology and Ritual
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2006; 8180901475; Hardcover; New; New;
India is uniquely blessed with a large number of perennial rivers. Sanskrit literature is replete with vivid descriptions and perspicuous portrayals of rivers in India throughout her length and breadth. The rivers in India are not regarded as merely a flowing mass of waters, but as loving, kind, benevolent, and bountiful mothers. The rivers had attracted the attention of even the Rsi-poets of the Vedas as also the authors of the Epics and the Puranas. This book deals with the rivers as they are found in Sanskrit literature. The mythology woven around them, their ritual worship, and their relationship with gods and men have been detailed. Sanskrit authors had fairly good knowledge of the rise and fall of the rivers. They compare well with the modern geographical views that are also provided in this book. This book also furnishes a large number of tirthas on the banks of the rivers as they are found in the texts. In addition, eulogies (manatmyas) and prayers (stutis) of rivers have also been mentioned with textual references. CONTENTS: Transliteration; Introduction; 1. Rivers 2. List of Mountains Printed Pages: 268. 110729

Bhartrihari's Nuggets: On Value of Life, Love and Light (Neeti, Shringgaara and Vairaagay) Shatakaas), (Sanskrit Text with English Translation and Romanized Verses)
J.P. Publishing House/Chaukhambha Orientalia; Delhi, India; 2011; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Ancient Indian cultural heritage handed down to us offers little more than traces of History and chronology. From the society point of view, the composition Bhartrihari Tri-Sati (Niti-Sringara- Vairagya Satakas) in Sanskrit is a utilitarian rather than Utopian classic of 300 stanzas, nuggets, arranged in 26 Sections, crafted in meaningfully melodious and superbly mellifluous Sanskrit diction suited for easy recitation as of a captivatingly pleasant water-fall in the background of vistas of verdant beauty, portraying the lasting values on Life, Love & Light, for the Family of Man. The novel and fascinating presentation of the theme is apt to get closer to everyone in a friendly persuasion for an en core just by the first reading or better, hearing, and then linger on to seep into the minds as Ethics of ennoblement, so relevant even to our modern social order to-day encompassing the young and old alike.Printed Pages: 159. 100762

8537 Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383098941; First Edition; Paperback; New; 140 x 216 Mm
The popularity of the writings of Rabindranath Tagore shows that there is neither East nor West in the realm of spirit, and that his work meets a general want and satisfies a universal demand. What the demand is, and how it is met, are questions which Dr S Radhakrishnan has tried to answer in this book. In interpreting the philosophy and message of Rabindranath Tagore, the book interprets the Indian ideal of philosophy, religion, and art, of which his work is the outcome and expression. It is not known whether it is Rabindranath's own heart or the heart of India that is beating here. In his work, India finds the lost word she was seeking. The familiar truths of Indian philosophy and religion, the value of which it has become fashionable to belittle even in the land of their birth, are here handled with such rare reverence and deep feeling that they seem to be almost new. Dr Radhakrishnan's acquaintance with the soul of India, from which Rabindranath draws his inspiration, has helped him in this expository work. Printed Pages: 176. 039175

Pentecostal Theology of Liberation: Holy Spirit and Holiness in the Society (Christian Heritage Rediscovered: 6)
Christian World Imprints/B.R. Publishing Corporation; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789351480129; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book emphasizes on the issue of liberation in the third world countries. To mitigate oppression and exploitation caused, various missions and third world theologies were implemented, out of which Pentecostal Movement had a significant edge. Its stress was on the work of the Holy Spirit in personal and social dimensions of life. The Pentecostal movement took its roots in the beginning of the 20th century. The Movement helped in lessening the feeling of differences between ethnic groups, men and women, rich and poor due to its Spirit-induced revolutionary attitude.The Author also sets forth the other side of picture by showing a wrong tendency among the Pentecostal believers to segregate themselves from the pertinent issues of the society in the name of holiness thereby creating, though unintentionally, other-worldly image to the Pentecostals.At the end, the Author believes that the Pentecostal understanding of holiness needs to accommodate the wider dimension of holiness of God - loving relationship, righteousness and justice in the society. It is not separation from the world but separation to God.This artfully told history offers something for everyone: Historians, Sociologists, Theologists, Eschatologists, Scholars, Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Public & Academic Libraries and Institutions, Students and Researchers, alike.Printed Pages: 120. 106412

Divine Art
Lustre Press/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174363211; Hardcover; New;
Religions of the world have inspired divine art forms, embracing the deepest insights and highest aspirations of mankind. This book charts the origin and evolution of these divine art forms and aims to understand the deeper, spiritual psychology of human beings inspired by divinity. Beginning with the worship of nature, divine art inspired forms as diverse as writing, music, dance, drama, painting, sculpture and architecture. Some early manifestations of divine art included the illustration of religious lore, epics and ballads on papyrus, palm fronds and parchment. Divine art also inspired dance forms such as the tsam and the noh. Architecture too reached its highest forms of magnificence as man tried to invoke and appease the gods. In this age of consumerism and materialism, divine art not only instils in us feelings of love and compassion but also helps us transcend our suffering. This book comes as a source of hope and elucidation that divinity holds us together. Printed Pages: 144. 108602

Evolution and Development of Islamic Jurisprudence in Central Asia (Islamic Heritage in Cross-Cultural Perspectives: 8)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607230; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Central Asia, since eighth century ce, has remained as one of the heartlands of Islam. Mawara al-Nahr (Transoxiania) is a name to reckon with in the annals of Islamic history and jurisprudence. The Abbasid rule (ce 750–1258) in this steppe region paved the way for setting the Islamic culture, and the reflection of positive results and Islamic ideology in all facets of life, nourishing the Islamic tradition and immensely contributing to the various socio-political institutions as well as diverse fields of knowledge. The early development of Islamic sciences and the involvement and contribution of Muslim intellectuals of Central Asia in their further growth remain as a splendid chapter of the Islamic history. This book represents Islam as a constructive force that nourished scholarship in varied Islamic sciences, especially in Islamic jurisprudence. It vividly analyses the Islamic legal theory and its development in varied phases, encompassing various regions, intellectual approaches and social practices, making it an appropriate legal system. Central Asia, along with other Islamic intellectual centres like Baghdad, Basrah, Kufa and Madina, maintained the lure of standardized scholarship. This volume, while featuring the great jurists of Central Asia and their monumental works to the Islamic jurisprudence, initiates a debate on the relevance of Islamic legal theory and its interpretation in the contemporary socio-political scenario, thus providing certain possibilities of rediscovering Islamic jurisprudence for the present times. A book of high academic value, it should impress all in the field of Islamic history and legal system.Printed Pages: 216. 100337

Drug Addiction in Male Adolescents: In Psychological Perspectives
Chaukhamba Sanskrit Pratishthan; Delhi, India; 2004; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Drug addiction is an increasing psychological problem through out the world. All addictive drugs have powerful action on the central nervous system and their harmful, adverse and detrimental effects are related to different personality characteristics. The nature of the effects of drug and dependence may be temperamental or physical both: All addictive and dependence producing drugs create emotional dependence, that is to say that the drug has to be taken as a means of coping with life's stresses and to produce various effects desired by the person on his emotions, drives, perceptual powers, conflicts and problems. It is a highly complex, subject which encompasses the biomedical and psychopharmacological effects on body functions and behavioral response of the user. It has been assumed to be an international phenomenon, where in, the drug or a toxic agent, the person who takes if and the society with is value system interact with each other. Thus it has been a serious problem almost for all the countries in the world. The most destructive of this social problem is restriction, comprehension and course deterrent punishment for those in this nefarious trade. Its another most terrible aspect is that it is causing impairable loss of manpower by reviving the physical and mental Health of millions of people, particularly of the young generation. The health problems due to drug addiction need to be assessed from psychological perspective. An overall knowledge of the health problem in relation to drug addiction is very necessary. After all, health , a bio-psycho phenomenon is a broad issue and must not be dealt exclusive by medically qualified professionals only. The young adolescents, the budding generation is very much victimized of this menace.There are many books on Psychology and psychiatry dealing with this burning psychological problem DRUG ADDICTION written by well known experts of western countries. Experience suggested that the knowledge derived from work done in western countries could not be directly applied to the Indian situation since most of our higher research works are based on western studies, there is always a gap between the theoretical knowledge and the practical realities within which we have to operate. In clinical practice the knowledge and techniques needed to be modified and adapted in Indian context. To study drug addiction in Indian perspective we need literature on detail psychological study exploring the main causes of drug addiction and remedial technique in Indian experience and orientation. The present study is an example to show that how much psychological factors are related with this menace and to apply some intervention program for temperamentally susceptible subjects. It is a comprehensive account of personality characteristics of male adolescent drug addicts, fully based on a major research project sponsored by ERIC, NCERT, where the first author was the Principal Investigator and the second author was co-investigator. It is designed to be a reference Book for students at the Post graduate as well as Doctoral level of psychology, psychiatry and social work.The book is divided into six chapters. The first chapter deals with the concept of drug addiction, different types of drugs and their harmful effects. The second chapter deals with the review of literature and the third one with methodology the SPINE of a scientific research. The sampling technique and psychological tools used in the study has been dealt in the chapter of methodology. The fourth chapter explored the results. Results have been shown in detail by tables, charts, figures and graph. The fifth chapter gives the full analysis interpretation and discussion. Result of the relevant statistical measures and psychological tools used are given in Appendix. Printed Pages: 268. 101053

Crime, Justice and Society
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8175332204; Hardcover; New; New;
Societies define crime as the breach of one or more rules or laws for which some governing authority or force may ultimately prescribe a punishment while justice is the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, fairness, religion and/or equity. Justice concerns the proper ordering of things and persons within a society. When society deems informal relationships and sanctions, insufficient to establish and maintain a desired social order, there may result more formalized systems of social control imposed by a government, or by a sovereign state. The book examines how these social realities affect the meanings and intentions of justice, law, policing, judicial processing, punishment, victimization, and media representations of crime and crime control. Gender and Political Economy
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8175332476; Hardcover; New; New;
Most of the countries in the region are undergoing rapid social and economic change. The obstacles to women's participation in and benefits from these changes mean that the potential contribution of half of the population of these countries is either unutilized or underutilized, signifying an economic loss to the country. The direct links of expanded opportunities for women, especially in education and income-generating acivites, with reduction in population growth, improved health and education of children, easing of environmental pressure, improved nutrition, poverty reduction, and sustainable development, indicate that under-investment in women is an uneconomic proposition. Keeping women at the margins of development could prove detrimental to the overall development efforts and goals of the country. Likewise, improving women's access to financial services contributes to poverty reduction as it enables women to contribute to household income and family welfare, thereby making the transition out of poverty easier for their families. Extending such services to women also makes good economic sense for financial internediaries, as women have shown themselves to be better savers, leading to greater savings mobilization, and better repayers, resulting in fewer bad debits. Agam Kala Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2017; 8173201722; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Buddhism is vast field spanning a wide variety of concerns. For twenty five Centuries Buddhism has inspired the greatest achievements of Asian thought and Culture, and today the impact of its message is beginning to be felt in the western World as well. The greatness of the religion lies in the method of its spread. In the Entire world religions, Buddhism is the only religion which made its way without Persecution, censorship or inquisition. As H.G. Wells, the great Historian stated "Buddhism has done more for the advance of world civilization and true culture than any other influence in the chronicles of mankind". Buddhism is not confined to any particular race, nation or country it is universal. Similarly the torch of Dhamma spread to the lands of gold and islands of gold (Suvarnabumi and Suvanadvipa). Andhradesa had been the strong hold of Buddhism from early times and the Andhakas as the Andhra Buddhists were known to Pali literature had been in the forefront of all the later developments in Buddhism. The Mahayana schools of Andhra, and the Andhra Mahayanists who settled at Srilanka have chosen the Southeast Asian countries where there were already commercial colonies set up by Andhra merchants.Nalinaksha Dutt rightly observes that to South India particularly Andhra goes the credit of being the birth place not only of Mahayana but also its earliest exponents Acharya Nagarjuna and Aryadeva. Buddhism is perhaps the earliest of the missionary religions; it adopted itself to the local condition and absorbed the local systems into itself without any prejudice to its fundamental tenets. That is one of the reason for the rise of different schools and sects not only in India but also Southeast Asian countries. The absorption of the local primitive beliefs and rituals led to the rise of peculiar or even strange principles in each of the countries and in no two countries Buddhist practices look alike. With the rise of worship the Mahayana pantheon like Avalokiteswara, Amitaba, Vajrapani, Manjusri, Prajnaparamita, Tara, Trailokyanatha, Lokanada, Lokeswara huge temples were Constructed to these gods all over Southeast Asia. Theravada and Mahayana coexisted in these countries from early centuries but from about the 12th century A.D Theravada became predominant. Printed Pages: 240 with 30 plates & 3 maps. 111503
