The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Volume II
Penguin; London, UK; 1995; 0140433945; Reprint; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION AND APPENDICES BY DAVID WOMERSLEY Although it covers no less than thirteen centuries of history, writes David Womersley, Gibbon's Decline and Fall 'is never routine, always alert with humanity and intelligence, often surprising in its sympathies'. It counts, quite simply, as 'one of the greatest narratives in European literature'. This definitive three-volume edition presents a complete and unmodernized text, the author's own comments and notes, and his famous Vindication. The first volume considers the extent and constitution of the empire under the Antonines and then takes events down to the end of the fourth century. It includes the controversial chapters on the early Church and examines in detail the reign of the first Christian and last pagan emperors, Constantine and Julian. Although it covers no less than thirteen centuries of history, writes David Womersley in his introduction, Gibbon’s Decline and Fall ‘is never routine, always alert with humanity and intelligence, often surprising in its sympathies’. It counts, quite simply, as ‘one of the greatest narratives in European literature’. ‘David Womersley’s edition is an enormous achievement … These volumes give us The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire on a scale worthy of the original’ J.G.A. Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, the Western Ksatrapas, the Traikutaka Dynasty and the "Bodhi" Dynasty
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1975; 8170690560; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
E.J. Rapson's Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, etc., is a valuable reference book for scholars interested in the study of early dynasties of western and eastern India. The work is of great importance since for the reconstruction of a full and accurate account of the history of these dynasties, coins have provided the main source of information. The present Catalogue includes the coins of the Andhra dynasty and its feudatories, the Western Ksatrapas including the families of Ksaharata, Castana and Rudrasimha II, the Traikutaka and the 'Bodhi' dynasty. In a scholarly Introduction, Rapson has eminently succeeded in presenting a cogent history of these dynasties by correlating also the evidence from inscriptions, Puranic sources and archaeological finds. In this extremely useful Introduction of over two hundred pages he has given the outline of the history of the Andhra dynasty from inscriptions, coins and other sources, notes on the inscriptions of the Andhra, Iksvaku, Western Ksatrapa and Abhira dynasties, Puranic dynastic lists, coins of the Andhra dynasty, history genealogy and coins of the Western Ksatrapas, the history and coinage of the Traikutaka dynasty, the coins of the 'Bodhi' dynasty, the types and symbols, denominations, weights and metals and coin-legends besides palaeographical notes on the inscriptions. He has thus been able to clear many obscure points relating to the reconstruction of the history of these dynasties. In the catalogue proper, all the details about the coins of these dynasties have been recorded with scholarly notes on debatable matters. At the end of the volume are given indexes of kings and rulers, types, symbols and adjuncts, dates on coins of Western Ksatrapas besides a historical, geographical and miscellaneous index. The volume also contains a map and twenty-one plates illustrating the coins and coin-legends. Printed Pages: 476 with 21 coin plates. 031492

Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 0902028472; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 279 x 216 Mm
The nineteenth century produced more varied forms of furniture than any previous period in British history. Whereas about half a dozen names such as Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Adam and Sheraton dominated eighteenth century designs, the nineteenth century produced dozens of independent designers particularly towards the end of the period. As the furniture trade developed. so manufacturers and retailing split. Catalogues began to be used in retail shops as they are today. Competition between retailers and the use of the new design books, resulted in a large number of designs, not only new ones but also a constant looking backwards to earlier centuries for inspiration. This change in the structure of the industry made full use of highly individual interpretations of Gothic, Renaissance, Elizabethan, ‘Naturalistic’ styles, Egyptian. Old French, Louis Quatorze, Louis Quinze, and Italian decorations, all applied to a wide variety of furniture, and one can understand that the complexity of the subject is best explained by a very large number of illustrations. This is the reason why over 6,000 appear in this book. Other books so far written on the period have tended to concentrate almost entirely on the names of leading designers and pieces made for the few important exhibitions, which, while relevant to taste at the top end of the market, had little influence on the vast flow of furniture produced for the wealthy middle class market, the type of furniture that one finds today in market shops and at auctions. The Dictionary is made up from forty-nine contemporary design and pattern books. Each piece of furniture has been sorted into its physical characteristics (e.g. table with three legs), so that it is only necessary to glance down the list of contents to identify into which category any particular piece belongs. This simple format has avoided the pitfalls of using contemporary nomenclature interlaced as it is with later fashionable terminology (for example, dressoir and ‘Glastonbury’ chair). Within each category the pieces are arranged in chronological order so that the evolution of each type is clearly seen. This provides the first major study of the very wide range of furniture produced in this prolific century and should become the standard work of reference on this subject. A scholarly introduction by the late Edward Joy, the eminent furniture historian, gives a fascinating review of the design trends of the period. * This first major study of the very wide range of furniture produced in the 19th century is the potential standard work of reference on this subject.. * It is compiled from nearly 50 contemporary catalogues. * It rearranges numerous illustrations under individual furniture categories. * While launching a whole new terminology, this book will enable the reader to get a speedy overall understanding of changes in style and construction over the period. * It is an easy-to-use, comprehensive aid to dating and identification. Decentralization, Forests and Rural Communities: Policy Outcomes in South and Southeast Asia
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935487; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Asian societies are entering a new era of decentralized governance of forests. The authority to make decisions on forest management has shifted to lower levels of government and, in some cases, to the local people themselves. But can governments simply `decentralize` authority away from the center, or are there certain core elements necessary to achieve sustainable management and conservation of forests in a decentralized world? This book argues that policy solutions to resource dilemmas faced by forest-accessing rural communities must be flexible, and should allow for local dynamics and innovations to take place. Presenting case studies from Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, this volume investigates how decentralization is affecting local stakeholders and their management of forest resources. The Idea of Gujarat: History, Ethnography and Text
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125041133; Hardcover; New; New;
The hegemony of India’s states on the way the country is imagined is such that it is often forgotten that Gujarat only emerged as both a political unit and as a form of cultural identity over the course of the last century. The Idea of Gujarat: History, Ethnography and Text critically examines the processes that went into the formation of the region and in the process unsettles a series of conventional wisdoms about the land and its inhabitants. Individual chapters examine the work of courts, colonial officers, politicians, scholars and gods and goddesses in the making of the state. As a whole, the book provides a broad introduction to the idea of Gujarat, the scope of its history, the nature of its politics, and the dynamics of its society.Printed Pages: 284. 101783

Society and History of Gujarat since 1800: A Select Bibliography of the English and European Language Sources
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8125041885; Hardcover; New; New;
This book consolidates scholarship on Gujarat in English and other European languages, notably, Dutch, German, French, Italian and Portuguese. It draws together well-known sources, as well as rare and under-exploited research material. Detailed bibliographical references are provided for books, chapters, periodical literature, dissertations, project reports, other materials published since 1800; anonymous works and select government publications, such as gazetteers and census reports, are also included. The titles considered spread across the disciplinary boundaries of history, political and development studies, literature and the liberal arts, sociology, cultural and social anthropology. In these respects, the book is a comprehensive introduction to modern traditions of scholarship on Gujarat. The reader is however also encouraged to treat the references as artefacts of power – each entry playing some role in the way we have come to know what we know about Gujarat today. Writing often has a social life, entertaining relations with other texts, with other authors, and with a readership. Annotations pointing to some of these connections are provided, especially when titles are uninformative, argument, data or provenance notable, or when serendipity has demanded. In this respect, the text can be read to trace the genealogy of certain ideas, regional traditions and preoccupations in the literature. Taken as a whole, the book can be read creatively as an alternative form of regional history, as a condensation of the literature from which current ideas about Gujarat have been formed.Printed Pages: 392. 101949

Jesus in India: King of Wisdom. The Making of the Film & New Findings on Jesus' Lost Years
Yellow Hat Publishing; Reno, Nevada, USA; 2008; 0981924441; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In 2005 Texas author Edward T. Martin (KING OF TRAVELERS: JESUS' LOST YEARS IN INDIA) and Producer / Director Paul Davids undertook the filming of the motion picture JESUS IN INDIA across 4000 miles of India and in several other countries. They met with the "Pope" of Hinduism, the Shankaracharya of Puri, to pose the question whether Hindus believe Jesus came to India. The answer from the spiritual leader of millions of Hindus -- Jesus spent years in India during the so-called "lost years," both in Puri and Kashmir, learning from Hindus. From there a deeper mystery unfolds. The story of the making of the film on this theme is a harrowing and wonderful adventure of a small film crew from the U.S. and India. Cinema students have never read about a production like this before, and students of religion will find incredibly provocative information unearthed from the search for the presence of Jesus (or "St. Issa") in India. The book also has unique photographs taken by the director during production. Printed Pages: 408. 037364

The Chronicles of the Pathan Kings of Delhi: with Supplement of the Revenue Resources of the Mughal Empire
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1967; 8121503604; First Indian Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Chronicles, last published in 1871, had long gone out of print, much to the inconvenience of the scholars and serious students of mediaeval Indian History. The Chronicles has always been regarded as the starting point for the study of the coins of the Sultans of Delhi. It describes, besides the contemporary coinage in other parts of India, some 320 coins of the Sultans of Delhi. In this classic work the author has discussed the metrology of the coins, of higher and lower denominations, and also the gold and silver and copper ratios that prevailed in India during the Mediaeval period. "The present re-print issue of Chronicles has been further enriched by the addition of the author's another work, The Revenue Resources of the Mughal Empire which had been out of print from a considerable period of time. The observations of the author on various aspects at once makes it an useful work for the study of Numismatic as well as Economic history of Mediaeval India. Printed Pages: 546. 000342

The last generation of gospel scholarship has considered the reconstruction and analysis of the audience behind the gospels as paradigmatic. The key hermeneutical template for reading the gospels has been the quest for the community that each gospel represents. But this scholarly consensus regarding the audience of the gospels has recently been reconsidered. Using as a test case one of the most entrenched gospels, Edward Klink explores the evidence for the audience behind the Gospel of John. This study challenges the current gospel paradigm by examining the community construct and its functional potential in early Christianity, the appropriation of a gospel text and J. L. Martyn's two-level reading of John, and the implied reader located within the narrative. The study concludes by proposing a more appropriate audience model for reading John, as well as some implications for the function of the gospel in early Christianity. • Contains an extensive history of the quest for the audience behind the gospels • Provides a detailed survey of and thorough interaction with a wide range of scholarship in the Gospel of John • Proposes a more appropriate model for the audience behind the gospels Contents 1. The audience and origin of the Gospels: introduction and method; 2. Early Christian community: a study of the community construct and its functional potential in early Christianity; 3. Early Christian Gospel genre and a critique of the two-level reading of the Gospel of John; 4. Early Christian reader: an explication of the audience of the Fourth Gospel by inquiring for the implied reader; 5. Reading the Fourth Gospel: the function of the Gospel of John in the light of the gospel community debate; 6. The sheep of the fold: summary and conclusion. Printed Pages: 336. 018646

Robert Knight: Reforming Editor in Victorian India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195696220; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Robert Knight, the principal founder and the first editor of Times of India, Mumbai and Statesman, Kolkata has hardly ever been mentioned in accounts of British India and omitted from biographical dictionaries. Using remote letters, crumbling newspapers, and obscure official archives, this book presents the first historical biography of the pioneering editor. It also outlines the history of two of today’s leading newspapers. Knight fought for a press free of government restraint or intimidation. An ardent critic of colonial rule, he made the press a ‘fourth estate’— a part of the political process in India. This volume documents the making of the reformer editor, taking us through his London background and start in Bombay; the first editorship and creation of the Times of India; the ill-fated move to Calcutta, the launching of the Statesman; the London venture; and finally the mature editor coming to terms with the empire. Against a backdrop of key events of Indian history from 1857 onwards, Robert Knight’s editorial responses, and his personal life are all lucidly intertwined in this biography. Edwin Hirschmann elaborates on the connections of the world of newsprint with the colonial establishment and Indian people. He also provides a fresh approach to the Orientalism debate by deploying the narrative of an Englishman, involved in the age of the emerging public communication system. 024481

Islamic Imperialism: A History
Yale University Press; New Haven, Connecticut, USA; 2007; 0300122632; Updated Edition; Paperback; New; 20 Cms x 13 Cms
From the first Arab-Islamic Empire of the mid-seventh century to the Ottomans, the last great Muslim empire, the story of the Middle East has been the story of the rise and fall of universal empires and, no less important, of imperialist dreams. So argues Efraim Karsh in this highly provocative book. Rejecting the conventional Western interpretation of Middle Eastern history as an offshoot of global power politics, Karsh contends that the region’s experience is the culmination of long-existing indigenous trends, passions, and patterns of behavior, and that foremost among these is Islam’s millenarian imperial tradition. The author explores the history of Islam’s imperialism and the persistence of the Ottoman imperialist dream that outlasted World War I to haunt Islamic and Middle Eastern politics to the present day. September 11 can be seen as simply the latest expression of this dream, and such attacks have little to do with U.S. international behavior or policy in the Middle East, says Karsh. The House of Islam’s war for world mastery is traditional, indeed venerable, and it is a quest that is far from over. 034675

The Indus Script and the Rg-veda (Second Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8120814053; Second Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Since the publication of the concordances of the inscriptions of the Indus seals many people have been working on the solution of the riddle presented by the 5000 years old script of the Indus valley. At first sight the task does not appear too difficult, as there are pictograms that can easily be recognized as man, bird, fish, dog or plant or a part of them. A lot of signs are geometric, but this does seem to be an insurmountable obstacle either, since some of them resemble or are identical to the majuscules of the Greek and the Latin alphabet or found in the mudras of Indian dance and in the patterns of symbolic Indian art. The decipherments that were based on these similarities resulted, however, only in the reading of some inscriptions as more or less obscure names, sometimes not even a phonetic value could be given. Nevertheless they are often presented as complete decipherments to the public. On this account, the pretension that the Indus script is deciphered meets with increasing suspicion and is exposed to ridicule even. Many scholars working in this field are nowadays of the opinion that the Indus script is altogether indecipherablem if not a bilingual of considerable size turns up. The approach to a decipherment presented in this volume make avail of bilingual, too, but its masterkey is the discovering of the symbolic and linguistic connection of the Indus signs with the Rg-Veda. More than 200 inscriptions, among them the longest and those with the most interesting motifs, have been decoded here by setting them word after wordin relation to Rg-Vedic verses. The results that were gained by this method of comparison for the pictographic and phonetic values of the Indus signs are surprising and far beyond the most daring phantasy. They have been summarised now in a complete sign-dictionary containing over 150 further inscriptions. At the same time many problems of the Rg-Veda could be solved and new insights be won, for example in the issue of the age of the Rg-Veda and the origin of the Vedic poets or the nature of the Soma plant.Printed Pages: 326. 102524

Textiles and Dress of Gujarat
Mapin Publishing; Ahmedabad, India; 2011; 8189995529; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The textiles and dress of Gujarat in northwestern India are acclaimed for their design and craftsmanship. The sophisticated weaves, dyeing techniques, intricate embroideries, vibrant motifs and embellished dress, and the communities to which many of these are unique, have been all been the subjects of this extensive documentation. Textiles and dress play a central role in the construction of a visual identity of Gujarat and its people. This book examines the "social life" of Gujarat’s textiles, tracing the historical journey of cloth and dress up to the present day. It looks closely at handmade fabrics, woven, dyed, painted and printed cloth, and embroidery, and locates their place in culture and trade. It also acknowledges the role of entrepreneurship in the survival of these handmade textiles. About the Author Eiluned Edwards has been researching textiles and dress in India for 20 years and she has published widely on their production, use and circulation. She was a senior research fellow at the V&A/London College of Fashion from 2005 to 2009, and has recently joined Nottingham Trent University as a senior lecturer in Design and Visual Culture. India: A Land of Contrasts
Om Books International; New Delhi, India; 9789381607695; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Exploring India from the time of the Indus Valley Civilisation to its modern urban cities, India: A Land of Contrasts paints a vivid picture of the country’s past and present. The book makes an interesting use of the country’s topography to demarcate distinct ways of Indian life, and to highlight the diversity that has made it a haven for tourists from across the world. Modern India today is an amalgamation of the old and the new, where remnants of the past—palaces, forts, and other age-old structures, created by mighty rulers—co-exist with the hi-tech creations of India’s ambitious youth. This marriage of the old and new is an all-pervasive theme of this book, where cities and cultures, rites and rituals, livelihood and lifestyles, reflect this co-existence. With breathtaking images of India, the book serves as the perfect appetiser for those who would like to partake of India’s effervescence and lose themselves in her myriad offerings, even if momentarily. USP • Encapsulates the diversity that is India • Eye-catching photographs • A treasure trove of Information on India’s past • A vivid portrayal of the young and enterprising population • Captures the spirit of a nation that finely balances tradition and modernity.Printed Pages: 512. 105117

The Poor Half Billion in South Asia: What is Holding Back Lagging Regions?
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2010; 0198068840; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
South Asia is a land of sharp and growing contrasts. It has attracted global attention as an emerging economic powerhouse, but is also home to the largest concentration of people living in conflict, poverty, and malnutrition. With a focus on the poor half billion of South Asia, this volume puts into perspective the colossal task ahead to eradicate poverty and enable inclusive growth in the region. Examining the challenges, successes, and failures of South Asia, it provides fresh perspectives on the links between economic geography, institutions, and globalization. Through a comparative study of spatial disparities in income, poverty, conflict, human development, and gender divides, the essays provide answers to why certain regions are lagging. Accelarating Growth and Job Creation in South Asia
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2009; 0198060041; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
In recent times, South Asia has attracted global attention for demonstrating rapid growth. What is not so well known is that this is the least integrated region in the world. South Asia has opened its door to the rest of the world but remains closed to its neighbours. Poor market integration, weak connectivity, and a history of conflict have created ‘two South Asias’. The first is dynamic, urbanized, globally integrated, and rapidly growing; the second is rural, impoverished, and lagging. Accelerating Growth and Job Creation in South Asia provides fresh perspectives on these issues by exploring the link between regional integration, economic growth, and job creation. The outcome of a high-level dialogue between the private sector, political leadership, policymakers, and academics in South Asia, this volume is an important contribution to the debates in this area. The volume is organized along three themes—overview of South Asia’s growth opportunities and challenges; sources of growth and policies for the future; and the significance of regional cooperation in promoting growth. The essays combine quantitative data with analytical rigour to provide innovative suggestions in terms of policies and institutions that can propel South Asia towards higher growth, while promoting inclusiveness. 027591
