Alberuni’s India: An account of the religion, philosophy, literature, geography, chronology, astronomy, customs, laws and astrology of India about AD 1030, 2 Vols (bound in one)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121505623; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Alberuni, or, as his compatriots called him, Abu Raihan was a contemporary of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazani, the leading monarch of Asian history in between AD 997-1030. Alberuni has left behind a monumental account in Arabic in the form of Tahqiq ma lil-Hind (AD 1030), more usually known in English as his India or Indica. While the ruthless conqueror Mahmud was harrying India by fire and sword destroying and plundering its cities and temples, the great Arabic scholar engaged himself in studying the culture and civilzation of the country. He has included in his account the religion, philosophy, literature, mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, geography, customs, laws and astrology of the Brahmanical India. He had written his India or Indica with a view to make familiar anyone about India who wants to converse with the Hindus, and the discuss with them questions on religion, science or literature, on the basis of his own civilization. It can be visualized from his account that he has conscious of not allowing a place to the religious enthusiasm, bordering on fanaticism and the racial superiority complex in his survey and due to this character the account made by Alberuni has proved to be the best among the records made by the foreigners. The editor, Dr.Edward Sachau has done a great service to the scholarly world by translating in English the original account of Indica by Alberuni. He has translated the original Arabic text with commendable amount of accuracy alongwith detailed annotations on the important Arabic words used and the indices at the end. This book an indispensable source work to the scholars researching on ancient India. Printed Pages: 894. 039311

Abu Raiham Mahamed ibn Ahmed Al-beruni, or an his compatriots called him Abu Raiham, was born in 973 in the feudetory of modern Khiva, then called Khwarizm. He distinguished himself early in Science and Literature and played a political part as councilor of the ruling prince of this native country of the Mamuni family. In this book gives extensive questions from the Classical Hindu authors and presents a picture of Indian civilization as painted by the Hindus themselves. Buddhist Thought in India
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8121507227; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
This book sets out to discuss and interpret the main themes of Buddhist thought in India. The emphasis throughout is on those aspects of the doctrine that appear to be indubitably true or significant. An attempt has been made at furthering the understanding, as distinct from the bare knowledge, thus instead of stringing together a lot of quotations, lucid explanations have been used to bring forth the doctrines of Buddhist faith. Thus, in presenting Buddhist philosophy as an intelligible, plausible and valid system, the author has not lost sight of its function as a spiritual method designed to win emancipation from the world. The author has also made an attempt to contribute to philosophical thought, by providing a framework upon which a philosophical system can be built which is as valid, cogent and coherent as those based on modern science. Buddhist Texts Through the Ages: ed. In collaboration with I.B. Homer, D. Snellgrove and A. Waley

A comprehensive anthology of Buddhist texts was never before attempted. The documents were distributed over so many languages that no one person could aim in knowing them all. Even where English translations of Buddhist texts existed, they were in most cases carried out at a time when the particular idiom of these texts was only imperfectly understood. Only in recent years has it become possible to translate accurately these texts. Present work was originally published in 1954 under the same name and was the first work in English for the Mahayana texts, Tantras and texts from China and Japan translated from the originals. Thirty Years of Buddhist Studies
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8121509602; Reprint; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 23 Cms
Dr. Conze, widely known as a leading Buddhist scholar through his many publications (among them Buddhism: Its Essence and Development, which has become a classic), has published during the thirty years of his working life a great number of important articles which are scattered over many periodicals difficult or almost impossible to obtain. To meet a growing demand for the most important of these articles to be re-published we are presenting this volume which contains both translations and original essays: the indispensable report on Recent Progress in Buddhist Studies; the survey of Mahayana Buddhism which is still the only account based on the actual sources; the comparisons of Buddhist and European philosophy; the essay on Buddhist Saviours. The remaining articles deal with the Prajnaparamita on which the author is the leading authority in the West. The translations included will be specially welcome because reliable English translations of Buddhist texts are still rare. Thus this volume will be invaluable and indispensable for all students of religion and philosophy. Printed Pages: 286. 026151

The Free Mind: A Lateral Thinking Approach
Jaico Publishing House; Delhi, India; 817992789X; Softcover; New;
Edward de Bono believes in freedom, but he poses the question: If you cannot see clearly, are you making a free choice? That question is at the heart of his new book. De Bono has devoted his life and career to getting his readers business leaders, educators, and politicians among others to understand that clarity of thinking is essential to a free society. It is not enough to simply be free from coercion. De Bono argues that there is no true freedom without the ability to see correctly the options we have. And, to see these options requires thinking thinking of a kind that De Bono says is not the norm and which urgently needs to be emphasized and taught.The best short introduction to his work, The Free Mind uses anecdote to convey his ideas and provides numerous examples that illustrate his thesis: to be free means to understand the choices we make, and this understanding can only come through improving the way we think.Printed Pages: 106. 105301

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire: Volume II
Penguin; London, UK; 1995; 0140433945; Reprint; Paperback; New; New; 13 Cms x 20 Cms
EDITED WITH AN INTRODUCTION AND APPENDICES BY DAVID WOMERSLEY Although it covers no less than thirteen centuries of history, writes David Womersley, Gibbon's Decline and Fall 'is never routine, always alert with humanity and intelligence, often surprising in its sympathies'. It counts, quite simply, as 'one of the greatest narratives in European literature'. This definitive three-volume edition presents a complete and unmodernized text, the author's own comments and notes, and his famous Vindication. The first volume considers the extent and constitution of the empire under the Antonines and then takes events down to the end of the fourth century. It includes the controversial chapters on the early Church and examines in detail the reign of the first Christian and last pagan emperors, Constantine and Julian. Although it covers no less than thirteen centuries of history, writes David Womersley in his introduction, Gibbon’s Decline and Fall ‘is never routine, always alert with humanity and intelligence, often surprising in its sympathies’. It counts, quite simply, as ‘one of the greatest narratives in European literature’. ‘David Womersley’s edition is an enormous achievement … These volumes give us The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire on a scale worthy of the original’ J.G.A. The aim of the present work is to trace the growth of the Buddhist community, to indicate the relation to the world of Hindu and non-Hindu society in which it arose, and to follow the rise and development of the doctrines from their legendary origin into the system which has spread over a great part of Asia. The legendary and earliest historical aspect was dealt with by the author in The Life of Buddha as Legend and History. The later phase is covered in the present work, making the chronology of Indian history and the sequence of thought in the development of Buddhist doctrine much clearer. Printed Pages: 332. 016969

Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, the Western Ksatrapas, the Traikutaka Dynasty and the "Bodhi" Dynasty
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1975; 8170690560; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
E.J. Rapson's Catalogue of the Coins of the Andhra Dynasty, etc., is a valuable reference book for scholars interested in the study of early dynasties of western and eastern India. The work is of great importance since for the reconstruction of a full and accurate account of the history of these dynasties, coins have provided the main source of information. The present Catalogue includes the coins of the Andhra dynasty and its feudatories, the Western Ksatrapas including the families of Ksaharata, Castana and Rudrasimha II, the Traikutaka and the 'Bodhi' dynasty. In a scholarly Introduction, Rapson has eminently succeeded in presenting a cogent history of these dynasties by correlating also the evidence from inscriptions, Puranic sources and archaeological finds. In this extremely useful Introduction of over two hundred pages he has given the outline of the history of the Andhra dynasty from inscriptions, coins and other sources, notes on the inscriptions of the Andhra, Iksvaku, Western Ksatrapa and Abhira dynasties, Puranic dynastic lists, coins of the Andhra dynasty, history genealogy and coins of the Western Ksatrapas, the history and coinage of the Traikutaka dynasty, the coins of the 'Bodhi' dynasty, the types and symbols, denominations, weights and metals and coin-legends besides palaeographical notes on the inscriptions. He has thus been able to clear many obscure points relating to the reconstruction of the history of these dynasties. In the catalogue proper, all the details about the coins of these dynasties have been recorded with scholarly notes on debatable matters. At the end of the volume are given indexes of kings and rulers, types, symbols and adjuncts, dates on coins of Western Ksatrapas besides a historical, geographical and miscellaneous index. The volume also contains a map and twenty-one plates illustrating the coins and coin-legends. Printed Pages: 476 with 21 coin plates. 031492

Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design
Antique Collectors Club; Suffolk, UK; 0902028472; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 279 x 216 Mm
The nineteenth century produced more varied forms of furniture than any previous period in British history. Whereas about half a dozen names such as Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Adam and Sheraton dominated eighteenth century designs, the nineteenth century produced dozens of independent designers particularly towards the end of the period. As the furniture trade developed. so manufacturers and retailing split. Catalogues began to be used in retail shops as they are today. Competition between retailers and the use of the new design books, resulted in a large number of designs, not only new ones but also a constant looking backwards to earlier centuries for inspiration. This change in the structure of the industry made full use of highly individual interpretations of Gothic, Renaissance, Elizabethan, ‘Naturalistic’ styles, Egyptian. Old French, Louis Quatorze, Louis Quinze, and Italian decorations, all applied to a wide variety of furniture, and one can understand that the complexity of the subject is best explained by a very large number of illustrations. This is the reason why over 6,000 appear in this book. Other books so far written on the period have tended to concentrate almost entirely on the names of leading designers and pieces made for the few important exhibitions, which, while relevant to taste at the top end of the market, had little influence on the vast flow of furniture produced for the wealthy middle class market, the type of furniture that one finds today in market shops and at auctions. The Dictionary is made up from forty-nine contemporary design and pattern books. Each piece of furniture has been sorted into its physical characteristics (e.g. table with three legs), so that it is only necessary to glance down the list of contents to identify into which category any particular piece belongs. This simple format has avoided the pitfalls of using contemporary nomenclature interlaced as it is with later fashionable terminology (for example, dressoir and ‘Glastonbury’ chair). Within each category the pieces are arranged in chronological order so that the evolution of each type is clearly seen. This provides the first major study of the very wide range of furniture produced in this prolific century and should become the standard work of reference on this subject. A scholarly introduction by the late Edward Joy, the eminent furniture historian, gives a fascinating review of the design trends of the period. * This first major study of the very wide range of furniture produced in the 19th century is the potential standard work of reference on this subject.. * It is compiled from nearly 50 contemporary catalogues. * It rearranges numerous illustrations under individual furniture categories. * While launching a whole new terminology, this book will enable the reader to get a speedy overall understanding of changes in style and construction over the period. * It is an easy-to-use, comprehensive aid to dating and identification. Decentralization, Forests and Rural Communities: Policy Outcomes in South and Southeast Asia
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935487; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Asian societies are entering a new era of decentralized governance of forests. The authority to make decisions on forest management has shifted to lower levels of government and, in some cases, to the local people themselves. But can governments simply `decentralize` authority away from the center, or are there certain core elements necessary to achieve sustainable management and conservation of forests in a decentralized world? This book argues that policy solutions to resource dilemmas faced by forest-accessing rural communities must be flexible, and should allow for local dynamics and innovations to take place. Presenting case studies from Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand and Vietnam, this volume investigates how decentralization is affecting local stakeholders and their management of forest resources. The Idea of Gujarat: History, Ethnography and Text
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8125041133; Hardcover; New; New;
The hegemony of India’s states on the way the country is imagined is such that it is often forgotten that Gujarat only emerged as both a political unit and as a form of cultural identity over the course of the last century. The Idea of Gujarat: History, Ethnography and Text critically examines the processes that went into the formation of the region and in the process unsettles a series of conventional wisdoms about the land and its inhabitants. Individual chapters examine the work of courts, colonial officers, politicians, scholars and gods and goddesses in the making of the state. As a whole, the book provides a broad introduction to the idea of Gujarat, the scope of its history, the nature of its politics, and the dynamics of its society.Printed Pages: 284. 101783

Society and History of Gujarat since 1800: A Select Bibliography of the English and European Language Sources
Orient BlackSwan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8125041885; Hardcover; New; New;
This book consolidates scholarship on Gujarat in English and other European languages, notably, Dutch, German, French, Italian and Portuguese. It draws together well-known sources, as well as rare and under-exploited research material. Detailed bibliographical references are provided for books, chapters, periodical literature, dissertations, project reports, other materials published since 1800; anonymous works and select government publications, such as gazetteers and census reports, are also included. The titles considered spread across the disciplinary boundaries of history, political and development studies, literature and the liberal arts, sociology, cultural and social anthropology. In these respects, the book is a comprehensive introduction to modern traditions of scholarship on Gujarat. The reader is however also encouraged to treat the references as artefacts of power – each entry playing some role in the way we have come to know what we know about Gujarat today. Writing often has a social life, entertaining relations with other texts, with other authors, and with a readership. Annotations pointing to some of these connections are provided, especially when titles are uninformative, argument, data or provenance notable, or when serendipity has demanded. In this respect, the text can be read to trace the genealogy of certain ideas, regional traditions and preoccupations in the literature. Taken as a whole, the book can be read creatively as an alternative form of regional history, as a condensation of the literature from which current ideas about Gujarat have been formed.Printed Pages: 392. 101949

Yellow Hat Publishing; Reno, Nevada, USA; 2008; 0981924441; Paperback; New; 15 x 23 Cm
In 2005 Texas author Edward T. Martin (KING OF TRAVELERS: JESUS' LOST YEARS IN INDIA) and Producer / Director Paul Davids undertook the filming of the motion picture JESUS IN INDIA across 4000 miles of India and in several other countries. They met with the "Pope" of Hinduism, the Shankaracharya of Puri, to pose the question whether Hindus believe Jesus came to India. The answer from the spiritual leader of millions of Hindus -- Jesus spent years in India during the so-called "lost years," both in Puri and Kashmir, learning from Hindus. From there a deeper mystery unfolds. The story of the making of the film on this theme is a harrowing and wonderful adventure of a small film crew from the U.S. and India. Cinema students have never read about a production like this before, and students of religion will find incredibly provocative information unearthed from the search for the presence of Jesus (or "St. Issa") in India. The book also has unique photographs taken by the director during production. Printed Pages: 408. 037364

The Chronicles of the Pathan Kings of Delhi: with Supplement of the Revenue Resources of the Mughal Empire
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1967; 8121503604; First Indian Edition; Cloth; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The Chronicles, last published in 1871, had long gone out of print, much to the inconvenience of the scholars and serious students of mediaeval Indian History. The Chronicles has always been regarded as the starting point for the study of the coins of the Sultans of Delhi. It describes, besides the contemporary coinage in other parts of India, some 320 coins of the Sultans of Delhi. In this classic work the author has discussed the metrology of the coins, of higher and lower denominations, and also the gold and silver and copper ratios that prevailed in India during the Mediaeval period. "The present re-print issue of Chronicles has been further enriched by the addition of the author's another work, The Revenue Resources of the Mughal Empire which had been out of print from a considerable period of time. The observations of the author on various aspects at once makes it an useful work for the study of Numismatic as well as Economic history of Mediaeval India. Printed Pages: 546. 000342

The Sheep of the Fold: The Audience and Origin of the Gospel of John (Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series: 141)
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 2007; 052187582X; First Edition; Hardcover; Brand New; Brand New; 228 x 152 Mm
The last generation of gospel scholarship has considered the reconstruction and analysis of the audience behind the gospels as paradigmatic. The key hermeneutical template for reading the gospels has been the quest for the community that each gospel represents. But this scholarly consensus regarding the audience of the gospels has recently been reconsidered. Using as a test case one of the most entrenched gospels, Edward Klink explores the evidence for the audience behind the Gospel of John. This study challenges the current gospel paradigm by examining the community construct and its functional potential in early Christianity, the appropriation of a gospel text and J. L. Martyn's two-level reading of John, and the implied reader located within the narrative. The study concludes by proposing a more appropriate audience model for reading John, as well as some implications for the function of the gospel in early Christianity. • Contains an extensive history of the quest for the audience behind the gospels • Provides a detailed survey of and thorough interaction with a wide range of scholarship in the Gospel of John • Proposes a more appropriate model for the audience behind the gospels Contents 1. The audience and origin of the Gospels: introduction and method; 2. Early Christian community: a study of the community construct and its functional potential in early Christianity; 3. Early Christian Gospel genre and a critique of the two-level reading of the Gospel of John; 4. Early Christian reader: an explication of the audience of the Fourth Gospel by inquiring for the implied reader; 5. Reading the Fourth Gospel: the function of the Gospel of John in the light of the gospel community debate; 6. The sheep of the fold: summary and conclusion. Printed Pages: 336. 018646

Century of Strife: The Finnish Organization of Canada 1901-2001
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2016; 9527167094; New;
A Century of Strife: The Finnish organization of Canada was written by the Finnish Canadian Archivist and historian Edward W. Laine (1940–2003). The study was almost completed by Laine, and has been accordingly edited by professor Auvo Kostiainen for publication by the Migration Institute of Finland in Turku. Kanadan Suomalainen Järjestö, the Finnish Organization of Canada, has been active from 1901. It has been one of the central organizations for Finnish immigrants in Canada with politically leftist sympathies. The volume explains the Finnish Canadian history as an integral part of Canadian statehood. Laine discusses the realities of the immigrant life concentrating especially on the turbulent periods in Canadian history of World War I and World War II, at the time when pressure was heavy towards the immigrants and their status in the country was questioned. All these and many other transnational aspects are carefully considered by Laine, who also writes a more general analysis of the post World War II decades, a time when the immigrant population had created new generation, and new immigrants with differing, more educated background began to pour in. Robert Knight: Reforming Editor in Victorian India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195696220; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Robert Knight, the principal founder and the first editor of Times of India, Mumbai and Statesman, Kolkata has hardly ever been mentioned in accounts of British India and omitted from biographical dictionaries. Using remote letters, crumbling newspapers, and obscure official archives, this book presents the first historical biography of the pioneering editor. It also outlines the history of two of today’s leading newspapers. Knight fought for a press free of government restraint or intimidation. An ardent critic of colonial rule, he made the press a ‘fourth estate’— a part of the political process in India. This volume documents the making of the reformer editor, taking us through his London background and start in Bombay; the first editorship and creation of the Times of India; the ill-fated move to Calcutta, the launching of the Statesman; the London venture; and finally the mature editor coming to terms with the empire. Against a backdrop of key events of Indian history from 1857 onwards, Robert Knight’s editorial responses, and his personal life are all lucidly intertwined in this biography. Edwin Hirschmann elaborates on the connections of the world of newsprint with the colonial establishment and Indian people. He also provides a fresh approach to the Orientalism debate by deploying the narrative of an Englishman, involved in the age of the emerging public communication system. 024481

Sörkan Rysäkeisarit: Kalastajia, ajureita ja Salakuljettajia
Bookstore Tiedekirja; Finland; 2013; 9522224235; New;
Sörkan rysäkeisarit on tarina helsinkiläisen kalastajasuvun elämästä 1800-luvun lopusta 1960-luvulle. Karlssonit olivat menestyneitä ammattikalastajia ja uhkarohkeita pirtun salakuljettajia. He asuivat Helsingin Vanhankaupunginlahdella, ja näiden kalastajien kautta piirtyy kuva laitakaupungin saarelaisista ja Toukolan ja Hermannin kujien asukkaista. Sörnäisten kaupunginosa nousi 1800-luvun lopussa suureksi maalta muuttaneiden sulatusuuniksi. Printed Pages: 211. 115506
