Linguistics: The Cambridge Survey: Volume IV: Language: The Socio-cultural Context
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521375835; First Paperback Edition; Paperback; Very Good; 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
Linguistics: The Cambridge Survey is a comprehensive introduction to current research in all branches of the field of linguistics, from syntactic theory to ethnography of speaking, from signed language to the mental lexicon, from language acquisition to discourse analysis. Each chapter has been written by a specialist particularly distinguished in his or her field who has accepted the challenge of reviewing the current issues and future prospects in sufficient depth for the scholar and with sufficient clarity for the student. Each volume can be read independently and has a particular focus. Volume I covers the internal structure of the language faculty itself, while Volume II considers the evidence for, and the implications of, a generativist approach to language. Psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics are covered in Volume III, and Volume IV concentrates on sociolinguistics and the allied fields of anthropological linguistics and discourse and conversation analysis. Several of the chapters in the work concentrate on the interface between different aspects of linguistic theory or the boundaries between linguistic theory and other disciplines. Thus in both its scope and in its approach the Survey is a unique and fundamental work of reference. It undoubtedly fulfils the editor’s principal aim of providing a wealth of information, insight and ideas that will excite and challenge all readers with an interest in linguistics. Contents Contributors; Preface; 1. The study of language in its socio-cultural context Beatriz R. Lavandera; 2. Language, culture, and world-view Jane H. Hill; 3. Language and social class Gregory R. Art of India: Prehistory to the Present
Encyclopaedia Britannica; London, UK; 2003; 0852298137; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 22 Cms x 28 Cms
This book is a culmination of Encyclopaedia Britannica’s effort to write anew, the history of Indian visual art. It includes not only a narrative tracing of the history but also briefer articles on specific sites and individuals. "Histories of art occasionally fail to recognize a dynamic present. That is all the more the case with Asian art, which is too often deemed to have lost its Asian-ness when it becomes part of a global contemporary art movement, forgetting, of course, that India, like most of Asia, has been linked with a global culture since protohistoric times. This volume, therefore, is very much more inclusive in order to recognize visual culture broadly conceived rather than just what more conventionally might be called art. "Art of India is intended as more than a picture book. It is a book about art. Renowned world-experts have written the very rich content. To ensure comprehensive coverage, the text has been separated under three section headings; historical record, genres in context, and guide to the arts. The second section addresses Indian art by medium. Section three has short articles covering all such places and individuals that have influenced the Indian subcontinent’s visual art over the years. Buddhist Textiles of Laos, Lan Na and the Isan: The Iconography of Design Elements
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2004; 8124602506; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 29 Cms x 23 Cms
Textiles from Laos, Lan Na and the Isan are prized for their artistic brilliance and aesthetic beauty. They speak volumes on a weaving tradition that has evolved through centuries and shaped the socio-cultural life of the people associated with it. This book studies the iconography of the design elements typically employed by craftspersons of textiles from these areas: it deals with their art of weaving, various textile forms to be found in the region and the suitable and inherently powerful motifs woven. With numerous splendid illustrations of the designs, it involves study of design elements on articles of daily use as well as those used for ceremonial purposes and the kind of forms and iconography depicted — like ancestor figures, animal and plant forms, water creatures, objects used in ceremonies and geometric forms. Viewing Buddhism as the prime influence upon the objects though Hinduism is also an important referent, it explores the symbols the design elements involve and their many meanings and the dimensions they encompass — their fertility-related, religious and universal associations, for instance. The designs considered in the study are based upon the square grid and the design elements are shown in the typical graph form employed by weavers. It also gives Indian (Sanskrit) and Thai equivalents for English terms of plant and animal species and clarifies a number of terms all of which make this painstakingly-conducted research a thorough work on the subject. The book will be very useful to scholars of Textile designs, Buddhist art and culture; and the cultural traditions of South-east Asia. Printed Pages: 454 with 98 plates and 457 figures. 015247

Rhythms of Life: Enacting the World with the Goddesses of Orissa
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0195694198; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 14 Cms x 22 Cms
The nine essays in this volume are based on the author’s fieldwork in Puri, Orissa between 1975 and 1993. During this eighteen-year period, she focused on two sets of rituals—one, in and around the temple of Jagann¡tha, studied mostly through the lens of the rituals of the Devadasis; the other, the festival of Raja Parba at Bali Haracandi, which celebrates the menses of the earth, sea, goddesses, and women. These essays contain detailed and rich re-tellings of complex rituals with their attendant stories and myths. They have been put together fifteen years after the author left the field of Indian studies. What she sees in these essays today is that the world of goddesses, gods, spirits, demons and the like, is real. However, the nature of this ‘real’ is strikingly different from the notion of the real as understood since the Scientific Revolution. Here she deals with a few ideas and categories that prevent such a realization—‘the subaltern’, ‘the third-world woman’, ‘the sacred’, and ‘history’. 028039

Interrogating Development: Insights from the Margins
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2010; 0198066414; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This volume provides a new perspective on the role of culture in shaping the attitudes towards economic development of marginalized people both in the global North and the global South. The strength of the collection lies in the examples from within India and without, which illuminate old Dalit–Savarna and Hindu–Muslim dynamics specific to India. These also facilitate a new understanding of the processes of marginalization in northern capitalist contexts. The essays draw attention to the various modernizing forces that have rendered invisible the dynamics of cyclicity, bio-cultural regeneration, and social and ecological reproduction. The volume contrasts Western modernity and modernizing processes in India, thereby providing startlingly new insights on modernity and non-modernity in contemporary India. This enables a deeper understanding of the nature of market forces and their effect on older, non-modern social, cultural, and epistemological dynamics and practices. Through specific examples and case studies from India, Europe, and the Americas, this volume explores key issues in the fraught relationship between development and marginalization. Crosses: Christian and Otherwise (Their From and Meaning)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607370; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
In “top-of-the-mind” reading, crosses are the iconographic representation of Christianity, though cross became an embodiment of Christian iconography only after the fifth century ce. In this volume, the author unveils the existence of 500 plus crosses, of which around 300 are of ecclesiastical, heraldic or mundane crosses. Most of these cruciforms were introduced before the twentieth century. Cruciform was antecedent of Christianity. There were numerous cruciform Hindu and Buddhist temples, even before the advent of Christianity and thus these hold no Christian ecclesiastical relevance. Of late many churches, cathedrals and basilicas applied cruciform to their structure and look in conformity with the Christian iconography. This enunciates the endless design possibilities of cruciform. The book discusses the pre-Christian iconographic cruciform Hindu and Buddhist temple structures and in detail the Christian cross iconography and the varied types of crosses. It delves deep into the numerous forms of Latin and Greek crosses, mainly from the ecclesiastical and heraldic viewpoint. Crosses adorned ecclesiastical, military, professional and trade implications, and were carved on shields and coats of arms. This volume also addresses other categories of crosses such as solar crosses, saltire crosses and miscellaneous crosses though they too have occasional ecclesiastical and heraldic implications. The book thus gives a fair account of the emergence, use and application of cruciforms until the twentieth century. Printed Pages: 230. 100330

The Iconography of Water: Well and Tank Forms of the Indian Subcontinent
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8124606978; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
While numerous Indian monuments are well known in the annals of architectural research and excavation, a category of monuments – baoli, bawadi, kere, kulam, kunda, talao, tanka, wav and zing – was neglected in the oeuvres of architects and art. A few are familiar with the splendid beauty of the Surya Tank, Modhera; the vertiginous Canda Baoli, Abhaneri; the incomparable Rani-ki Wav, Patan; the magnificent Kalyani Tank, Hulikere; and the beautiful Rudabai-ni Wav, Adalaj. Thousands of such monuments are excellent in architectural beauty and design, apparently based on their primary utility – drinking, bathing, religious purification and ornamental (recreation). Water plays a quintessential role in the life of man. Its harvesting, preservation and careful use are of paramount importance, especially in those regions where rains are scanty. Thus took place the construction of these artificial water bodies. Many of them are within the precincts of temples and mosques, built in a time span of seventh to twentieth century ce. This volume, devoted to the study of water monuments, is heavily loaded with the design of various structures and other vital information. Every detail in this book is assiduously analysed, compared and rechecked to present the dimensions, proportions and relationships of each of the various elements of the structures. Thus it unravels a number of keys by which others can unlock the mysteries and beauties of these neglected monuments. It can be a precious collection for architects, historians, researchers and anyone who loves water bodies. Printed Pages: 249. 100342

Monuments of India and the Indianized States: The Plans of Major and Notable Temples, Tombs, Palaces and Pavilions of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Java, The Khmer, Pagan, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia (From 3rd BCE to CE 1854)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8124603855; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
This volume presents the plans of temples, tombs, palaces and pavilions found in the Indian subcontinent and the Indianised states of Java, the Khmer, Pagan, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia. They contain detailed diagrams of plans of over 380 structures along with a brief note on each plan that covers the various segments/sections of each monument. The plans are precise and are presented along with their elevations which are proportional, i.e., depict major architectural forms and masses. Temples with Multiple Garbhagrhas: An Iconographic Consideration of Selected Indian Monuments
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607257; First Edition; Hardcover; Nerw; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Hindu temples are raised to their deities. They are a means to acknowledge the deity and to enshrine his/her images. People honour and worship the deity. Within the Hindu pantheon, there is an array of divinities spread over three major sects — Vaishnava, Shaiva and Shakta. All these sects have stemmed from the Vedic teachings and beliefs. Normally a temple is devoted to a single diety, having a solitary sanctum (garbhagriha), called ekakuta. In this volume, the author, through his serious research, has made a sincere attempt to identify, present and feature about one hundred temples with multiple garbhagrihas which are categorized as dvikuta, trikuta, catuskuta, pancakuta, saptakuta, navakuta and caunsath yogini temple. This book delves deep into the details of these temples: their historical milieu, their iconography, the application of mandala(s) to their plans and so on. It also attempts to correct those errors crept in the earlier studies of other researchers in understanding and detailing a few multiple garbhagrihas. The author has given a brief description of such temples and has made a sincere effort to provide a relatively precise scale rendering of those temples, in a size and format, commensurate with their importance. This volume can serve architects, temple planners, researchers, vastu experts and even historians as a sourcebook on temples with multiple garbhagrihas. An Encyclopaedia of Buddhist Deities, Demigods, Godlings, Saints and Demons: With Special Focus on Iconographic Attributes (Emerging Perceptions in Buddhist Studies:1-2), 2 Vols
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1998; 8124600201; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
Beginning with a few aniconic symbols, like foot prints, a throne, the Bo tree or stupas, in the prechristian Indian art, Buddhism came to evolve a variety of picturesque representations of a Self-Existent, Superimmanent Principle: in myriad forms and emanations that range from the superbly magnificent to sheerly grotesque. Endowed with diverse iconographic attributes, Buddhist deities/saints/demons have grown, over the rolling centuries, into bewildering numbers, legions. Which all, leave alone the neophytes, not even the best of scholars can recognize! The names of the divinities and their cultural/regional perceptions -- owing largely to the plurality of Buddhist pantheons, have only gone on to further complicate their identification. Unveiled, for the first time, in the pages of this Encyclopaedia, is a panorama of Buddhist deities, demigods, godlings, saints and demons, with spotlight on the concretized, recognizable forms and the subtle symbolism they involve. In its nearly 8000 alphabetically arranged articles of varying lengths, it mixes gods and demons, bhiksus and btsans, the aesthetic and the grotesque -- in fact, nearly the whole range of good and evil forces which the inspired among the adherents of the Buddhist faith conceived so ingeniously! Professor Bunce has painstakingly marshalled a wealth of data from authoritative language sources, notably, Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Newari/Nepalese, Chinese, Mongolian, Japanese, Siamese/Thai, Annamese/Viet Namese, Javanese, and Sinhalese, in his effort to capture almost the entire framework of Buddhist divinities: a multi-pantheonic framework, together with its classes, groups and hierarchies, ranging from Adi-Buddha to Arhats and yet beyond. Himself a distinguished scholar of Oriental/Buddhist Art, Dr. Bunce incorporates, in scrupulous detail, the iconographic attributes of deities: like colours, heads/eyes, hands, objects held, body, feet, asanas, mudras, ornaments, vahanas, emanations, and whether calm or wrathful -- which, with a generous supplement of illustrations: about 300 elegant line-drawings and several colour plates, highlight the distinctiveness of each individual figure. Also included in the Encyclopaedia are user's guide, glossaries (of asanas, mudras and attributes), identification charts, a hierarchic table, and bibliographic references. Growing from years of Professor Bunce's persevered research and study, this compilation is certainly the first ever to draw together most of the Buddhist divinities/mythological characters, in their distinctly recognizable forms. And is, therefore, indispensable to both the specialists and non-specialists trying to identify each from a whole host of these figural representations.Printed Pages: 1193. 100348

Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 0143032089; First Edition; Paperback; New; New; 18 Cms x 23 Cms Neeraj Mahajan
Being a diabetic does not mean you have to eat boring or insipid food, and here are some interesting and unusual recipes to prove it. Not only are these recipes simple to follow, they also use ingredients readily available in a regular kitchen. The end result is healthy food that is so delicious that non-diabetic members of the family will also enjoy it, thus doing away with the need to prepare `special' food for a diabetic person. And to help monitor calorie intake, a crucial aspect of diabetic care, every recipe is supplemented with a list of the protein, fat and carbohydrate content as well as the total calories per serving. The introduction, by a dietician specialized in diabetics, clears many myths and fears concerning the disease. It explains lucidly how and why diabetes occurs, what its side effects are and what causes them, and how to control diabetes. So, if you are a diabetic or know one in search of a healthy yet adventurous diet plan, this is the perfect book for you. Printed Pages: 104. 014581

Viraha Bhakti: The Early History of Krsna Devotion (Hindu Tradition Series)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8120838165; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The Lord Krsna abandoned his earthly mistresses who then spent their days of separation pining for his return. This powerful theme found expression not only in myth, but also in the devotion and poetry of a religious culture which evolved in South India. From the fifth century A.D. the Tamils absorbed many elements from the classical traditions of the North, such as yoga, temple worship and Krsna myths, and the results were unique blends of the two civilizations. Viraha-bhakti, as the author styles this type of Krsna religion, imbued the theme of separation with erotic and ecstatic features and evolved as one of the highlights of Indian religion and culture. The present work is a detailed study of the multifarious origins of Viraha-bhakti in South India and its developments up to the point at which it entered the pan-Indian scene. The study suggests a revision of the monolithic image of Indian religion implied in much scholarly literature. It differentiates a great variety of interacting traditions and milieux, and demonstrates the dynamism of Indian culture. By identifying a specific type of religion and reflecting on its significance, the author attempts, at the same time, to go beyond purely textual and historical considerations. Thus the book will be of interest to any student of Indian religion and culture.Printed Pages: 692. 102041

Discovering the Vedas: Origins, Mantras, Rituals, Insights
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2008; 0143099868; First Indian Edition; Paperback; New; 13 Cms x 19 Cms
"This is a remarkable book. It untangles the many complexities of the Vedas and combines Staal’s scholarly respect for the texts, with explanations that are lucid and occasionally witty. His insights are thoughtful and perceptive. —Romila Thapar In this unprecedented guide to the Vedas, Frits Staal, the celebrated author of Agni: The Vedic Ritual of the Fire Altar and Universals: Studies in Indian Logic and Linguistics examines almost every aspect of these ancient sources of Indic civilisation. Staal extracts concrete information from the Oral Tradition and Archaeology about Vedic people and their language, what they thought and did, and where they went and when. He provides essential information about the Vedas and includes selections and translations. Staal sheds light on mantras and rituals, that contributed to what came to be known as Hinduism. Significant is a modern analysis of what we can learn from the Vedas today: the original forms of the Vedic sciences, as well as the perceptive wisdom of the composers of the Vedas. The author puts Vedic civilisation in a global perspective through a wide-ranging comparison with other Indic philosophies and religions, primarily Buddhism For Staal, originally a logician, the voyage of discovering the Vedas is like unpeeling an onion but without the certainty of reaching an end. Even so, his book shows that the Vedas have a logic all their own. Accessible, finely-argued, and with a wealth of information and insight, Discovering the Vedas is for both the scholar and the interested lay reader. Printed Pages: 456 with 16 b/w photos. 033832

Exploring Mysticism: A Methodological Essay
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120835565; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
As the title indicates, this essay deals primarily with the exploration of mysticism, not with mysticism itself. It reviews the methods by which mysticism is generally studied and explores those by which it can be studied more fruitfully. In doing so, it is also concerned with mysticism itself. The author has attempted to be more systematic and comprehensive, so that future explorations may have a firmer foundation. In the study of mysticism, a common drawback is lack of experience. However, prejudices prove to be the most persistent obstacles, especially to professional students of religion, but also to those who approach it from other angles. The author has tried to present a case for a rational point of departure, and has indicated in which directions one might go from there. This has taken him into mystic domains which are widely regarded as beyond the pale of critical investigation.Printed Pages: 255. 102314

Forty Years of World's Largest Democracy: A Survey of Indian Elections
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1990; 8121203325; Hardcover; New; New;
"Half of the people on Earth who live in a Society with civil liberties live in India", remarked Daniel Moynihan, a former U.S. ambassador to India. The fascinating story of voting in the world's largest Democracy is told in this book.It provides factual data on electors, voters and the fortunes of all-India and regional Political Parties in the elections held during the last forty years to the Lok Sabha and the State assemblies. It also examines the issues which figured in the election manifestoes and campaigning of the Principal contending parties in the latest elections to the ninth Lok Sabha held in November 1989. Many of these ranging from Poverty and illiteracy to communalism, corruption and electoral Reforms are problems that the Country will continue to have to cope with in the coming years.It is appropriate that this publication should have been sponsored by the Press Trust of India.The book includes tables, charts and Maps depicting the outcome of the successive elections to the Lok Sabha and the State assemblies. Also eight pages of photographs which capture the Atmosphere of the latest elections. Readers will find this book a valuable reference work to understand the changing Political scene in a vibrant democracy.Printed Pages: 131. 105732
