Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1999; 8187586001; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 23 Cms x 29 Cms
Volume I Part I: History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization. The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognise the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers whore are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. This first volume is a new adventure in the historiography of Indian civilization. It avoids the ethnic and West-centred bias which has been a legacy of colonial historiography. It seeks strict scientific objectivity, differing from all hitherto existing volumes of this kind by giving due attention to science and philosophy in the history of Indian civilization. The contributions are based on the first-hand and critical study of the original sources by the best known experts. While meticulously attending to chronology and hard data, the volume also seeks to understand scientific and philosophical concepts, methods and theories. It seeks to present the symbolic world of art and culture as grounded in moral vision as well as social reality. The work is designed to be of use to scholars and specially to students and general readers. The volume is divided into six sections: Historiography; Geography and Ethnography; Prehistory, Technology and Social Evolution; Proto-History; The Vedas, Vedic Society and Ideas; and Foundations and Beginnings of Systematic Science. Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187586605; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOSPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. The historical, conceptual, theological and the social ethos of Indian culture come alive in the vast spectrum of themes related to the origins and development of Jainism, one of the oldest living religions of the world. Eminent contributors to this volume explore the immensity of the Jaina scriptures, literature and art, to open up a vast store-house of knowledge. The socio-anthropological and metaphysical conceptualism of various philosophical theories and their development in the context of the evolution of human society, are analyzed in depth. The teachings of a galaxy of Teerthankaras culminating with Mahavira, have contributed immensely to the essence of Indian culture - freedom of thought, belief and expression, tolerance and non-violence (Ahimsa), that is the backbone of Jaina philosophy. The work is divided into three sections: part I: HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY AND LITERATURE; Part II: EPISTEMOLOGY AND MYSTICISM and Part III: CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION. Together these offer to readers, researches and scholars much food for further exploration of the mystique, that is Jainism. Printed Pages: 611. 037695

In spite of its primarily historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. The current accounts of the history of civilization do not generally appear to give adequate importance to non-western civilizations. Works like Needham’s Science and Civilization in China are rare. The accounts of Indic civilization on the other hand have either neglected the factor of civilizational contacts or represented them in an inadequate manner. Few serious attempts have been made to gain an insight into human civilization in all its aspects through the comparative historical and integrated studies. Historical research necessarily tied to the study of the source material is still in the process of rising to the level of universal history. Volume I, The Dawn and Development of Indian Civilization comprise six parts. Parts 4 and 5 are intended to review the history of science, philosophy and culture in Indian civilization in the context of civilizational contacts with the Iranic, Semitic and Hellenic worlds and comparable developments in them. Appropriately entitled A Golden Chain of Civilizations, Part 4 covers the period upto c.600 BC. Part 5 covers the period from c.600 BC to AD 600 in two sections-Sections 1: Cultural Contacts and Movements, and Section 2: Science, Philosophy and Culture. Printed Pages: 841. 037191

Buddhism (History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization, Volume VII, Part 9)
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8187586591; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOSPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India’s heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is marked by what may be called ‘methodological pluralism’. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. Buddhism can truly be called a universal religion. Like a kaleidoscope one can glean different spiritual structures in it. For some the rationalist and agnostic aspects of the early Pali Buddhism is important, others are inspired by the Mahayana texts and the Japanese tradition. Buddhism is to be valued for its idealistic, transcendental even non-dual tendencies. Still for some others the existential tendency and phenomenology seem significant in Buddhism. The study of Buddhist logic as preserved in Tibet and Mongolia also led to the appreciation of Buddhist philosophy as logic and epistemology with a strong ‘Kantian’ bias. The contribution of Buddhism went a long way in creating the essence of Indian culture, universal in its teachings. The catholic and rational message of Buddhism made it a dynamic and expansive world religion. What seems an anti-essentialist philosophy to the modern man actually shows different levels of spiritual experiences culminating in niruana. The study of Buddhism has attracted a host of scholars in India and abroad in all disciplines, e.g. History, Philosophy, Religion, Language, Literature and the Arts since ancient times. The present volume covers all the aspects of Buddhism by distinguished scholars. The topics range from archaeology and the date of the Buddha to contemporary Buddhism. The intricacies of the original Gospel, Hinayana, Mahayana, Buddhist monasticism and art, and Buddhism in relation to contemporary issues have been dealt with thoroughly. Printed Pages: 875. 037463

Hindu Law of Inheritance: As in Viramitrodaya of Mitramisra
Gyan Books Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1986; 8121200164; Softcover; New;
The institutes of various sages, as embodied in the Dharmasastra, which form the primary source of the Hindu law, treat Law in the widest Sense of the term. In these institutes, no distinction was drawn between Positive law on the one Hand and Laws of morality and Religion on the other. But the distinction appeared gradually, some traces of it can be found in the institutes of Yajnavalkya, which devote a separate chapter, called Vyavahara, to the positive law. This Authority is held in the highest esteem by the Hindu lawyers. The Mitaksara of Vijnanesvara, which gives a systematic exposition of the law and is held to be the highest authority in almost all schools, professes to be but a Commentary on Yajnavalkya. The most important part, the Vyavahara, as in Yajnavalkya and Mitaksara, comprises the sections on the law of inheritance and succession. The gradual development of the Hindu law, which was originally moulded by the institution of family, consisted of the Recognition of individual rights and in the introduction of cognates as heirs in preference to more distant agnates.The Viramitrodaya, composed by Mitramisra (17th cent.) is a well known treatise (nibandha) and has always been regarded as an authority of considerable Importance by the High Courts and Legal experts in British India. It presents in a very systematic way the Views of Yajnavalkya and Mitaksara and upholds their opinions, particularly of the latter against critics like Jimutavahana. It also gives a satisfactory exposition of which may have been left doubtful by the Mitaksara.The Section on Vyavahara or litigation of the Viramitrodaya is divided into four parts, the third of which describes eighteen Topics of litigations, one of these topics being law of inheritance and succession, called Vibhaga or Dayabhaga, i.e. partition of inheritance.The present volume contains the text of the Vibhaga portion of the Viramitrodaya with an English translation by a versatile scholar and famous practising Advocate of the Calcutta High Court in the late nineteenth century. The publication will prove to be of great Research value for the Study of the evolution of Hindu law of inheritance and some of the Hindu social problems.Printed Pages: 301. 105633

Limited Wars in South Asia
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2010; 9789380502458; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
India’s continuing failure to devise credible conventional military responses to Pakistan’s asymmetric provocations has seriously eroded the credibility of its deterrence. This could invite a serious escalation of the jihadi sub-conventional assault on India. It is not possible to fight a purely defensive campaign against an asymmetric war and prevail. The adversary can simply vary the targets of attack ad infinitum. Costs have to be raised for the aggressor by taking the war to his territory with proactive military responses that preempt such attacks rather than defending every possible target or carrying out legal enquiries post-strike. There is an urgent need therefore, to fashion an Indian Doctrine for Limited War that is credible, usable and ensures escalation dominance. To that extent, this study addresses a vital and urgent need. It is based on an empirical study of the South Asian experience of Limited War and relies heavily upon insights from India’s recent military-historical experience. It examines the evolution and rationales for Indian concepts of fighting a Limited Conventional War against a nuclear backdrop. It is based primarily on a current literature survey and a purely analytical and non-experimental approach. It relies on published and unpublished sources as well as interviews/interactions with the military leadership involved in the formulation of these concepts. It is an essential reading for academics, policy-makers, defence personnel and scholars of strategic studies in general.Printed Pages: 204. 104395

Space Security: Indian Perspective
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 9789380177762; Hardcover; New; New;
India is among the few countries with home made satellites in orbit. Indian Space programme while being impressive with arrays of achievements in peaceful use of the space has woefully lacked in dedicated military applications. Admittedly cartographic platforms in the orbit can be used by the military to meet their cartographic needs but, they fall short of the 10-15cm (4”-6”) capabilities of the best military satellites today.In “Space Security from the Indian Perspective”, the author examines the dimension of the space threat emanating from our adversaries and need to develop our own military capability in the space .He argues that reliance of space is not exclusive to defence alone in fact the dependence of civil sector is more critical. In defence, we need not only to develop affordable options but also take steps to safeguard our space assets to ensure their continued use. This book examines the ramification of the military space capability and the choices available to India to safeguard its space assets which would interest both the generalists and the specialists.Printed Pages: 152. 103247

Possibility of Nuclear War in Asia: An Indian Perspective
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 9789381411513; Hardcover; New; New;
This book attempts to fuse two topical subjects and deal with them in a holistic manner. It is oft said and is also widely believed that the 21st century belongs to Asia and that the two giants of Asia, namely, China and India are going to dominate the world in the ensuing decades. It is also implicitly accepted that nuclear weapons are going to be there, at least for the foreseeable future. These are the two topics that have been analysed in this book; nuclear weapons and the emerging epicenter of global affairs, namely, Asia. The book deals with the fundamental nature of nuclear weapons itself. It purposely steers away from the Cold War mindset of viewing nuclear weapons in a western manner and attempts to unravel the manner in which the nations of Asia view these weapons in their own unique way. It is also about the nature of disputes in Asia and the security environment in Asia, both presently as well as in the foreseeable future. Since it is a fact that there are unresolved disputes in the region, the book also deals with the aspect of analysis of potential conflict scenarios. Will the countries succeed in settling their disputes diplomatically? Can deterrence succeed? What will happen if that fails? What will be the shape of future conflicts? This book makes a modest attempt to provide answers to some of these perplexing questions that plague policy makers and strategists in Asia today. Since the study is from an Indian perspective, the focus is naturally biased more towards South Asia vis-à-vis the other parts of Asia. Though the book attempts to answer all questions, some tough questions typically deny neat solutions. As the author admits, the aim of the book is to get both the policy and decision makers as well as the professional military to think about these issues, so that, in time, workable solutions can be evolved.Printed Pages: 240. 103272

The Puspasutra: A Pratisakhya of the Samaveda, 2 Vols
Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/MLBD; New Delhi, India; 2001; 8120817923; Hardcover; New; New;
The Pu?pa-Sutra is one of the major ancillary works in the Saman technical literature attributed to the Kauthuma and Ra?aya?iya schools. It deals with the Saman melodies and their structure. The term pa, in the present context, means t syllabic expansion that takes place when a melody is formed out of a verse. The Pu?pa-Sutra was written long after the Saman melodies had been developed.It is difficult to fix the exact date of the Pu?pa-Sutra. There were additions to the original nucleus, like the vikalpas (alternatives), remaining bhavas, the detailed treatment of prastava and the first two prapa?hakas. Its present form of having ten prapa?hakas is a great help to the scholars working in the field of the study of Samavedic chants. The explanation of the technical terms provided in this edition could also be of great help to the readers.The present edition prepared by G.H. Tarlekar who was a living authority on the science of Saman-chanting, contains the accurate text in Sanskrit with English exposition bringing out all the intricate points discussed in the Sutras in a highly technical language. This important text on the Saman-chanting has been exposited in English in this edition for the first time.Printed Pages: 447. 101602

Organic Farming
Foundation Books in association with Centre for Environment Education; New Delhi, India; 817596345X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Green Revolution Technologies have made India self-sufficient in food production but unable to sustain soil productivity. A quantum leap in production of over 100 million tones was achieved in just two decades (1960-1970). But during the 1980s and 1990s it was a struggle to add on another 10 million tonnes despite good monsoons and the increasing supply of inputs of fertilizers, high yielding seeds, pesticides as well as water through irrigation. High costs of inputs have turned farming into a loss-making enterprise while leading to severe environmental degradation. Heritage: Palaeontological and Iconographical Aspects
Sharada Publishing House; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8188934968; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 19 x 25 Cm
The present book is based on the Faunal and Iconographical collections made by renowned scholars of the Vikram University of Ujjain and housed in the University Museum. Part I deals with the faunal material collected by the lateDr. V.S. Wakankar from various areas in the Central Narmada Valley particularly in the districts of Narsinghpur and Hoshangabad. The collection throws important light on the palaeo-environmental history and chronology of the geological formations of the Narmada sediments. The Narmada Valley has proved to be a benchmark for the Old and New World faunal elements and patterns of their migration. Faunal groups included are the Proboscideans, Artiodactyles, Perissodactyles, Reptiles, Microvertebrates, etc. as also the Stone Age tools and Gondwana wood fossils. Comments on the Hathnora pre-Homo sapiens Man, recently discovered in the Valley, which has a great bearing on the Hominin evolution in South Asia as a whole, have also been included. Part II reviews the Chalcolithic culture in the Ujjain region as based on the various archaeological excavations. The present work gives a brief idea about the movements of Chalcolithic Community of Malwa in context of the famous sites like Kayatha, Dangawada, Mahidpur, Runija, Ujjain and Sodanga. Classified and descriptive catalogues of the cults - icons, viz., Saiva, Vaisnava, Sakta and Jaina, etc., the rare sculptures of the Salabhanjika, Apsarases, etc. and the list of inscriptions preserved in the University Museum are included in this catalogue. Also included are the rare collections of the Manuscripts in Scindia Oriental Research Institute and the illustrations of the Bhaktivijaya by Mahipati. We hope that this catalogue will be useful to students of Heritage Management particularly those interested in Palaeontology and Iconography of Madhya Pradesh.
