Radical Universalism: Does Hinduism Teach that all Religions are the Same?
Voice of India; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8185990824; Softcover; New;
This book was originally published by Dr. Frank Morales, Ph.D. as a long philosophical essay. His essay was destined to be read by over one-million people within only two years after its initial appearances, and to forever change the way the world understands the true nature, beauty, and teachings of Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism). In this newly revised and expanded edition of his work, Dr. Morales reiterates his important message that Sanatana Dharma must by understood and practiced only in its most original, unaltered, and authentic form if it is to survive and thrive into the future as the world's most important and relevant spiritual tradition. This crucially important book philosophically positions Sanatana Dharma to become the most eminent and influential force for positive global change that the world has ever known. Even if you feel that you already know that Hinduism truly teaches, be prepared to challenge your understanding with this revolutionary and thought-provoking work of historical significance. Dr. Frank Morales, Ph.D., a practicing Hindu for over 33 years and with a Ph.D. in Language and Cultures of Asia, Dr. Frank Morales is currently recognized as one of America's leading authorities on Hinduism, meditation, and yoga spirituality. He is the Resident Acharya of the Hindu Temple of Nebraska, the first American in history to be honored with such a position. Printed Pages: 80. 111303

Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin
Kaveri Book Service; New Delhi, India; 2010; 817479106X; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 15 x 23 Cm
Benjamin Franklin (1706-90) was a US statesman, author and scientist, and was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His life is of importance because of the part he played in securing the independence of the United States and in establishing it as a nation. Distinguish as a statesman, he was equally great as a Philosopher, thus uniting in himself a rare degree of excellence in both these pursuits, to excel in either or which is deemed the highest praise. He set up a printing house in Philadelphia, bought the Pennsylvania Gazette (1729), and built a reputation as a journalist. In 1736 he became clerk of the Assembly, in 1737 postmaster of Philadelphia, and in 1754 deputy postmaster-general for the colonies, and was sent on various diplomatic missions to England. In 1746, he began his research into electricity, proving that lightning and electricity are identical, and suggesting that buildings be protected by lightning conductors. In 1775, he was actively involved, in framing the Declaration of Independence. A skilled negotiator, he successfully won Britain's recognition of US independence (1783). He was US minister in Paris until 1785, then three times president of the State of Pennsylvania. In 1788, he retired from public life and died in Philadelphia. In Franklin's autobiography is offered not so much a ready-made formula for success, as the companionship of a real flesh and blood man of extraordinary mind and quality, whose daily walk and conversation will help us to meet our difficulties, much as does the example of a wise and strong friend. While we are fascinated by the story, we absorb the human experience through which a strong and helpful character is building.Printed Pages: 246. 104195

Cyberpower and National Security
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8190848763; Hardcover; New; New;
The cyber domain is undergoing extraordinary changes that present both exceptional opportunities to and major challenges for users of cyberspace. The challenges arise from the malevolent actors who use cyberspace and the many security vulnerabilities that plague this sphere. Exploiting opportunities and overcoming challenges will require a balanced body of knowledge on the cyber domain. Cyberpower and National Security assembles a group of experts and discusses pertinent issues in five areas.The first section provides a broad foundation and overview of the subject by identifying key policy issues, establishing a common vocabulary, and proposing an initial version of a theory of cyberpower. The second section identifies and explores possible changes in cyberspace over the next fifteen years by assessing cyber infrastructure and security challenges. The third section analyzes the potential impact of changes in cyberspace on the military and informational levers of power. The fourth section addresses the extent to which changes in cyberspace serve to empower key entities such as transnational criminals, terrorists, and nation-states. The final section examines key institutional factors, which include issues concerning governance, legal dimensions, critical infrastructure protection, and organization.Cyberpower and National Security frames the key issues concerned and identifies the important questions involved in building the human capacity to address cyber issues, balancing civil liberties with national security considerations, and developing the international partnerships needed to address cyber challenges. With more than two dozen contributors, Cyberpower and National Security covers it all.Printed Pages: 600. 103228

Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit Grammar and Dictionary, Volume I: Grammar, Vol. II: Dictionary
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8121511100; Reprint; Hardcover; New; New; 23 x 29 Cm
This is a pioneering work dealing with the description of the grammar and the lexicon of Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit (BHS). Most of the Buddhist texts available in north India are based on it. It is based primarily on an old Middle Indic vernacular not otherwise identifiable. It contains features which were borrowed from other Middle Indic dialects either originally or in course of historic development or both. In other words, even its Middle Indic aspects are dialectically somewhat mixed. However, Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit (BHS) was also influenced extensively by Sanskrit from the very beginning of the tradition as it has been transmitted to us and increasingly as time went on. Later many products of this tradition have often, though wrongly been called "Sanskrit" without any bearing. The most striking peculiarity of this language is that from the very beginning of its tradition it was modified in the direction of standard Sanskrit, while still retaining evidences of its Middle Indic origin, in all its texts, even the oldest, as shown by our manuscripts and editions. Sanskritisms are constantly presented check by jowl with Middle Indic forms, and often with hybrids which strictly are neither one or other. These Sanskritisms are much too common to be comparable with stray Sanskrit loan words or loan forms which may have been occasionally adopted in many genuine Middle Indic vernacular. The author has excluded from the grammar and dictionary all forms which are standard Sanskrit, and all words which are used in standard Sanskrit with the same meanings. Printed Pages: 896 036454

The Rig Veda and the History of India (Rig Veda Bharata Itihasa)
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8177421085; Reprint; Softcover; New; 22 x 28 Cm
There were two main Vedic cultures in ancient India. The first was a northern kingdom centered on the Sarasvati-Drishadvati river region dominated by the Purus and the Ikshvakus that produced the existent Veda texts that we have. The second was a southern culture along the coast of the Arabian Sea and into the Vindhya Mountains, dominated by the Turvashas and Yadus and extending into groups yet further south. These northern and southern groups vied for supremacy and influenced each other in various ways as the Vedas and Puranas indicate. The northern or Bharata culture ultimately prevailed, making India the land of Bharata or Bharatavarsha and its main ancient literary record the Vedas, though militarily the Yadus remained strong throughout history. The southern culture was the older of the two, with the Vedic people coming originally from the south, not the northwest. This was the basis of the maritime symbolism at the core of Vedic thought, which reflects an ancient heritage. In addition, there was a third or northwest Vedic culture in Punjab and Afghanistan, that of the Anus and Druhyus, which was at first part of the northern kingdom but gradually developed its own identity. It was partly assimilated by the Bharatas that became the dominant northern people. Another portion of it extended north and west outside of the Indian subcontinent. Its influence was secondary to that of the northern and southern kingdoms and much of it passed out of the Indie sphere of culture. However, it was the basis of most of the Indo-European and Iranian peoples and cultures that we find in Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Therefore, we must look at the south and east connections to understand not only Indic civilization and Hinduism, but also to understand the Vedas themselves. The western connections to the Europeans and Iranians were more an outflow, while the southern connections were more original and enduring. Western scholars, dominated by a European mindset, only traced Indo-European culture from Europe and the Middle East to India as its eastern border. They failed to see that the boundary was only in their minds. Printed Pages: 391. 100018

Age, Class, Politics, and the Welfare State
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521372232; First Edition; Hard Cover; Fine; Fine; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This analysis of the growth of welfare spending examines the relative impact of class and status groups versus demographic composition and political structures. Special attention is given to the role of the aged as representative of the importance of ascription and middle-class groups in welfare growth, and to the effect of welfare spending on income inequality. Aggregate cross-national data from the UN, ILO, and the World Bank are analysed and the conclusion is drawn that a large aged population, especially in combination with democratic political processes, is a direct and crucial influence on the level of welfare spending. Contents Preface; 1. The welfare state: some neglected considerations; 2. Theoretical perspectives on the welfare state; 3. Social welfare spending in advanced industrial democracies; 4. Social welfare spending and democratic political context; 5. Economic growth, social welfare spending, and income inequality; 6. Infant mortality, equality, and social welfare spending; 7. Knowledge to Policy: Making the Most of Development Research
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8178299305; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Does research influence public policy and decision-making and, if so, how? This book is the most recent to address this question, investigating the effects of research in the field of international development. It starts from a sophisticated understanding about how research influences public policy and decision-making. It shows how research can contribute to better governance in at least three ways: by encouraging open inquiry and debate, by empowering people with the knowledge to hold governments accountable, and by enlarging the array of policy options and solutions available to the policy process. Knowledge to Policy: Making the Most of Development Research examines the consequences of 23 research projects funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). Key findings and case studies from Asia, Africa, and Latin America are presented in a reader-friendly, journalistic style, giving the reader a deeper grasp and understanding of approaches, contexts, relationships and events. The book will be useful to academics, researchers and students of political science, public administration, development studies, and international affairs; professionals in donor and development organizations worldwide; policy- and decision-makers in government (local and national levels) and international arenas (particularly trade and finance); and development agencies and civil society (non-governmental) organizations concerned with integrating the voice of citizens into policy- and decision-making processes. Contemporary Chinese Political Thought Debates and Perspectives
KW Publishers; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789381904602; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Consumed for nearly a century by internal and external struggles, China has finally gained a preeminent place in the global community of nations. China’s steps toward free market capitalism have opened the country to the outside world and raised Western hopes for increased democratization. The Chinese, however, have developed their own style of capitalism, which outsiders tend to analyze through the lens of their own ideologies, distorting their understanding of the nation’s goals and policies. Although popular belief still regards China as a traditional communist or Maoist country, most observers fail to realize how much the Chinese political system has evolved and diversified in the last fifty years.In Contemporary Chinese Political Thought: Debates and Perspectives, Fred Dallmayr and Zhao Tingyang assemble essays by leading Chinese intellectuals to illuminate the political ideas shaping the rapidly changing nation. The contributors examine China’s dominant intellectual trends, focusing on the interlocking arenas of politics, economics, and culture. They investigate such topics as the advantages and disadvantages of the popular “China,” or “China Consensus” theory, which advocates mixed ownership, individual property rights, and government intervention in the economy.Exploring the resurgence of Chinese Confucianism, the tenets of “New Leftism” (or post-Maoist leftism), and the evolution of liberal socialism, the book offers keen insights into the relationship between rapid economic growth and political stability and the government’s role in mediating between them. Comprising a broad range of opinions and perspectives, Contemporary Chinese Political Thought moves beyond the usual analytical frameworks toward what Dallmayr and Zhao describe as “a dismantling of ideological straitjackets.”Printed Pages: 304. 104313

WMD Proliferation:Reforming the Security Sector to Meet the Threat
Vij Books India Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2009; 9789380177113; Hardcover; New; New;
The threat of terrorists using WMD is not new, but the current expansion of these groups’ regional networks means that no state can consider itself immune from the threat of terrorist attack or proliferation activity. States must make improvements in their security sectors to prevent the future use of WMD by terrorists.WMD Proliferation is the first book to address how nations should reform their security sectors to counter the threat of WMD use by terrorists. Schreier evaluates the likelihood that terrorists will use each type of WMD and examines the tactical, strategic, and ideological issues involved with each type. He analyzes why terrorists have not used unconventional weapons more than they have, and concludes that the answer lies in understanding both the terrorists’ capabilities and motives and how both factors limit the likelihood of terrorist attacks with unconventional weapons. Schreier also presents a list of criteria that a state must meet to be optimally prepared and organized to counter threats posed by the proliferation of WMD, terrorism, and organized crime. WMD Proliferation will be of interest to legislators, policymakers, scholars, students in the field of international security and international relations, and anyone concerned about intelligence and terrorism policy.Printed Pages: 360. 103227

Ritualizing on the Boundaries: Continuity and Innovation in the Tamil Diaspora
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8121512840; First Indian Edition; Hardcover; New; New; 16 x 24 Cm
For centuries and particularly since the 1830s, Tamils and other South Indians have become part of a diaspora that has scattered their identities and traditions, both real and invented, to cities around the world. In his comparative study of four Tamil resettlements, senior scholar Fred W. Clothey examines the rituals that have traveled with these South Indian communities—Hindu, Muslim, and Christian—and how these practices perpetuate or modify the heritages these groups claim for themselves in their new environs. Clothey looks specifically at settlements in the cities of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Singapore; Mumbai, India; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Describing such settlements as communities living on boundaries, Clothey explores how their existence illustrates divisions among ethnic, local, and global identities; between generations; and between imagined pasts and uncertain futures. He contends that one of the most visible ways expatriated communities negotiate these boundaries is through the use of ritual as manifested in the building of shrines and temples, the celebration of festivals, the perpetuation and modification of performances, and the enactment of ceremonies believed to have ancient roots. In individual chapters Clothey examines the construction of Pittsburgh’s Sri Venkatesvara temple, one of the oldest and most authentic Hindu temples in the United States; explores the transition from temporary to permanent shrines in Singapore’s Hindu community; compares how brahmins in Mumbai and Kuala Lumpur perpetuate subethnic identities in their shrines; and surveys Mumbai’s slums to explore the worlds of Muslims, Christians, and castes of Hindus. He also reflects on the meanings of elaborate festivals in each of these cities and speculates about how the singing of hymns links the singers to their perceived lineage as well as to social configurations in their new homes. Such vignettes reveal how rituals serve to affirm a community’s sense of heritage while at the same time reflecting their present circumstances. Through these case studies of the Tamil diaspora, Clothey suggests that rituals can create a process of being at home away from home. Printed Pages: 261. 037924

The Many Faces of Murukan: The History and Meaning of a South Indian God
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2005; 8121511437; First Indian Edition; Hard Cover; New; New; 16 Cms x 24 Cms
This book is a study of one of the most persistent and popular gods in south India and traces the history of the god, dwelling especially on four periods: The earliest known Tamil civilization as portrayed in classical Tamil literature and archeology; The Northern Epic period as depicted in Epic mythology; the Medieval South as depicted in the iconography and literature of the period; and contemporary Tamil Nadu as expressed in the ritual life of the cultus. In each period, an attempt is made to explore the cultural dynamics and symbolic meanings of the deity's mythology and cultic life. The god's development includes stages in which he is a lord of hill and hunt in the Early South; a deity who serves as prototype for both ksatriya and brahmana communities in the Epic North; a god who serves as purveyor of Saiva Siddhanta thought and inspiration of Tamil literature in the Medieval South; and a 'high god' who epitomizes the fullness of regional pride and religious aspiration in contemporary Tamil India. As one of the most popular deities in Tamil India today, Murukan is a particularly apt portrait of how a contemporary people in Asia find identity and meaning through traditional symbols. Murukan's history and meaning combines themes which are classical and 'popular,' 'Sanskrit' and 'Tamil,' traditional and 'modern,' Vaisnava and Saiva. That people of differing walks of life have perceived him in varying, yet consistent, ways even into the present moment, makes the cultus of Murukan a fascinating example of man's persisting quest for meaning and fulfillment. Linguistics: The Cambridge Survey: Volume IV: Language: The Socio-cultural Context
Cambridge University Press; Cambridge, UK; 1989; 0521375835; First Paperback Edition; Paperback; Very Good; 15.5 Cms x 23 Cms
Linguistics: The Cambridge Survey is a comprehensive introduction to current research in all branches of the field of linguistics, from syntactic theory to ethnography of speaking, from signed language to the mental lexicon, from language acquisition to discourse analysis. Each chapter has been written by a specialist particularly distinguished in his or her field who has accepted the challenge of reviewing the current issues and future prospects in sufficient depth for the scholar and with sufficient clarity for the student. Each volume can be read independently and has a particular focus. Volume I covers the internal structure of the language faculty itself, while Volume II considers the evidence for, and the implications of, a generativist approach to language. Psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics are covered in Volume III, and Volume IV concentrates on sociolinguistics and the allied fields of anthropological linguistics and discourse and conversation analysis. Several of the chapters in the work concentrate on the interface between different aspects of linguistic theory or the boundaries between linguistic theory and other disciplines. Linguistics: The Cambridge Survey: Volume III: Language: The Socio-cultural Context
Thus in both its scope and in its approach the Survey is a unique and fundamental work of reference. It undoubtedly fulfils the editor's principal aim of providing a wealth of information, insight and ideas that will excite and challenge all readers with an interest in linguistics. 'The contributions are informed, up-to-date and lucid, and many of them make unusual - in fact, unprecedented - efforts to present opposing viewpoints fairly and to look at what they have in common rather than at what divides them. ...The mixture of detached overviews and strongly argued positions works very well, in my view, and the editor is to be congratulated for the high standards that are maintained throughout. The tremendous intellectual energy and excitement of the field come through strongly, and I shan't hesitate to recommend many of the chapters to students.' -- The Times Higher Education Supplement Contents Preface; 1. Psycholinguistics: an overview Michael K. Tanenhaus; 2. Language and cognition Robyn Carston; 3. Processes in language production Merrill F. Garrett; 4. Language perception Giovanni B. Flores D’Arcais; 5. The mental lexicon Karen D. Emmorey and Victoria A. Fromkin; 6. Where learning begins: initial representations for language learning Lila R. Gleitman, Henry Gleitman, Barbara Landau and Eric Wanner; 7. Second language acquisition Ellen Broselow; 8. Neurolingustics: an overview of language-brain relations in aphasia Sheila E. Blumstein; 9. The biological basis for language David Caplan; 10. Linguistics and speech-language pathology Catherine A. Jackson; 11. The evolution of human communicative behaviour William Orr Dingwall; 12. Art of India: Prehistory to the Present
Encyclopaedia Britannica; London, UK; 2003; 0852298137; First Edition; Hardbound; New; New; 22 Cms x 28 Cms
This book is a culmination of Encyclopaedia Britannica’s effort to write anew, the history of Indian visual art. It includes not only a narrative tracing of the history but also briefer articles on specific sites and individuals. "Histories of art occasionally fail to recognize a dynamic present. That is all the more the case with Asian art, which is too often deemed to have lost its Asian-ness when it becomes part of a global contemporary art movement, forgetting, of course, that India, like most of Asia, has been linked with a global culture since protohistoric times. This volume, therefore, is very much more inclusive in order to recognize visual culture broadly conceived rather than just what more conventionally might be called art. "Art of India is intended as more than a picture book. It is a book about art. Renowned world-experts have written the very rich content. To ensure comprehensive coverage, the text has been separated under three section headings; historical record, genres in context, and guide to the arts. The second section addresses Indian art by medium. Section three has short articles covering all such places and individuals that have influenced the Indian subcontinent’s visual art over the years.
