Mango Cheeks, Metal Teeth
Westland Limited; New Delhi, India; 9789383260546; Softcover; New;
A playful coming-of-age story that gently explores the themes of growing up, loss of innocence and the intimate yet aloof nature of upstairs-downstairs relationships. It is a different time. Sridevi rules the box office and Kapil Dev is yet to retire. Geetha, elevenish, is off for the annual family vacation in Kerala and is looking forward to all the fun with her cousins , visits to the beach and trips to the market to buy glass bangles and kites and shuttlecocks, evenings in the veranda listening to her grandfatherís ridiculous ghost stories which he swears are all true, marathon card games and ferocious boys-versus-girls battles with the bristles of brooms made from coconut fibreBut as the summer unfolds, Geetha finds herself spending more time instead at the back of the house with the free-spirited cook, the hypochondriac cleaner, the virile gardener, a cheeky helper girl and Babu, son of Koovait Kannan, the bumbling plumber who made good. Babuís family is immersed in the wedding preparations for Babuís sister, who is marrying the most eligible bachelor in the neighbourhood Constable Venu, an expert thrasher of suspects and son of that wealthy black-marketer of supplies, Ration Raaman. But Babuís mind is otherwise occupied. With thoughts of a face as rounded as a Malgova mango of an oiled plait as thick as the ropes used to tie the fishing boats, of eyes that sparkle like the sea on a sunlit morn. As Geetha and Babuís closely linked but widely divergent lives intersect, both are about to lose some of the blissful ignorance and innocence of childhood. Charmingly quirky and often laugh-out-loud hilarious, Mango Cheeks, Metal Teeth is a playful coming-of-age story that gently explores the themes of growing up, loss of innocence and the intimate yet aloof nature of upstairs-downstairs relationships. 109625

The Buddhist Art of Kausambi
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2003; 8124602263 / 9788124602263; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
One of the major centres of Buddhist art in ancient times, Kausambi provides evidence of an uninterrupted art tradition spanning centuries. Pointing to the scant attention Kausambi has received from scholars in the past, this work attempts to highlight its art treasures through a study of its stone sculptures. Based on scrutiny of stone sculptures found at various sites in Kausambi and its vicinity and housed in different museums, it presents perhaps the first extensive documentation of the Buddhist art of the region from the Mauryan to post-Gupta period. It examines in detail over 300 stone sculptures, paying special attention to their iconographic features, types of stone, techniques of carving, grinding and polishing and their aesthetic appeal. All this comes with a background throwing light on the history of Kausambi and its association with Buddhism, the early archaeological explorations in the region, and the individuality and uniqueness of Kausambi art as compared to Mathura and Sarnath schools. The book presents over 225 black-and-white and over 50 coloured photographs of Buddhist sculptures which are neatly classified and systematically analysed. It would prove invaluable to scholars and students of Buddhist art. Printed Pages: 364 with 2 maps, 322 b/w photos and 54 coloured illustrations. 010688

The Inheritors
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2004; 014303216X / 9780143032168; First Edition; Paperback; New; New;
From the ritual-bound household of an orthodox scholar in a small village in Bengal in 1897 to Germany and Mumbai at the turn of the new millennium, The Inheritors follows the shifting life patterns of a family through a melange of narratives, memories and characters. The unrelenting puritanism of Nyayaratna Bishnupada Deb Sharma drives his daughter Radharani to insanity and throws into sharp relief his grandson Shibkali's feeble attempt to break free. Giribala voices her resentment against her circumstances through a lifetime of silence, her destiny finding an echo in her daughter Alo, tragic victim of her husband's sexual perversions. And Pramatha's depraved radicalism is set against Shashishekhar's progressive outlook which symbolizes the most significant departure from the stifling constraints of his community. Even as it inherits the deadwood of the past, each generation strives to liberate itself, setting the stage for the eternal conflict between tradition and change, between a legacy and its inheritors. Aruna Chakravarti draws upon history and myth, religion and folklore, rituals and culinary practices to create a vivid portrait of a community of Vaidic Kulin Brahmins. The narrative, oscillating back and forth in time, weaves a vibrant tapestry of lifeódiffering ideologies and sensibilities, suicides and desertions, marriages and infidelities, bigotry and liberalismóset in the larger context of a nation's inexorable march towards independence and a society caught on the cusp of conservatism and modernity. Women Empowerment in India: Processes and Inter-Linkages
Om Publications; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8190676660 / 9788190676663; Hardcover; New; New;
The Book is the outcome of an intensive research undertaken in three villages of Bhojpur Block of sub division ModiNagar of district Ghaziabad in western Uttar Pradesh under the 'Research Award Scheme of University Grants Commission to understand the complex and inextricably woven interactions and inter-linkages between the essential proxies or elements of women empowerment and the prevailing formal and informal social and cultural institutions. This microscopic study projecting panoramic view of the status of women in India aimed at testing the hypothesis that "Focusing only on the elements like improving females3 education and skills and Health care; providing employment for cash income as well as credit to individual woman or group of women; allowing them in political process of decision making and participation etc; will not result in visible improvement in the status unless challenges are also posed to discriminatory institutions". The book extensively reviews literature on the status of women in pre independent India as well as the major studies on the concept of 'Empowerment' in general and 'Empowering Women; in particular and the development efforts made by .the government since independence for emancipation of women in various fields and how far these efforts have been successful in main streaming of women and practicing the gender justice in the society. A 'women empowerment index' is constructed to assess the women's situation over a period of time as well as across the regions. An analytical framework for examining the gender inequalities generated by key institutions through which development takes place occupies a central place in the book. This study identified the strategic or critical areas requiring attention for the women's empowerment and essentially focuses on the institutionalization of the process of women empowerment at various levels. The findings of the study will be useful for the planners, policy makers or those involved in implementation and practicing of the women empowerment at the grass root level across the country.Printed Pages: 384. 103187
