Advaita Vedanta: An Introduction
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2007; 8120820274 / 9788120820272; Second Reprint; Hardcover; New; New;
The novelty of this book consists of the fact that it introduces the reader to the basic tenets of Advaita Vedanta in three independent but complementary ways: scripturally, rationally and experientially. All the three elements are usually found intertwined in accounts of Advaita Vedanta. They are presented distinctly here in the hope that each perspective will enrich one`s understanding of Advaita Vedanta as a whole and also allow the reader to form his or her own opinion about the relative merits of each approach.Printed Pages: 125. 102126

Decolonizing Indian Studies
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2015; 8124608326 / 9788124608326; Hardcover; New; New;
The present Indian academic self-understanding of its history and culture is largely Western in origin. This Western intellectual enterprise, however, went hand in hand with a Western political enterprise, i.e. the colonization of India. This raises the question: To what extent, if any, did the two developments influence each other? It also raises another question: To what extent did West’s cultural presuppositions influence its understanding of Indian civilization?The central epistemological issue which these questions raise is the following: What significance does the fact that the self-understanding of a culture is mediated by that of another culture, over which it was culturally and politically dominant, possess for the votaries of the culture whose self-understanding has thus been mediated in this fashion?This question is not merely of historical but also of contemporary interest, for in an increasingly globalizing world, in which power is unevenly distributed at various levels, the self-understanding of all cultures is likely to be influenced by how they are being presented by other cultures. Furthermore, in such a world, shifting political alliances may generate new intellectual configurations, whose legitimacy may require constant examination. The essays in this book address these and similar issues. Printed Pages: 306. 107443

Gandhi: A Spiritual Biography
Hachette; New Delhi, India; 2013; 9789350097144; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In his Autobiography, Gandhi wrote, What I want to achieve what I have been striving and pining to achieve these thirty years is self-realization, to see God face to face. All that I do by way of speaking and writing and all my ventures in the political field are directed to this same end.' While hundreds of biographies and histories have been written about Gandhi (1869 - 1948), nearly all of them have focused on the national, political, social, economic, educational, ecological or familial dimensions of his life. Very few in recounting how Gandhi led his country to political freedom, have viewed his struggle primarily as a search for spiritual liberation. Shifting the focus to the understudied subject of Gandhis spiritual life, Arvind Sharma retells the story of Gandhis life through this lens. Illuminating unsuspected dimensions of Gandhis inner world and uncovering their surprising connections with his outward actions, Sharma explores the eclectic religious atmosphere in which Gandhi was raised, his belief in karma and rebirth, his conviction that morality and religion are synonymous, his attitudes toward tyranny and freedom and perhaps most important, the mysterious source of his power to establish new norms of human conduct. This book enlarges our understanding of one of historys most profoundly influential figures, a man whose trust in the power of the spirit helped liberate millions. Printed Pages: 264. 037710

Goddesses and Women in the Indic Religious Tradition
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 2004; 9004124667 / 9789004124660; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New;
Goddesses and Women in the Indic Religious Tradition goes beyond the traditional sources that lie at the basis for determining the position of goddesses and women in India. Following the lead of a “hermeneutics of surprise” the book identifies, indeed, surprising new material – and conclusions; for example the analysis of Vedic Srauta ritual. Or by offering surprising conclusions, when the location is obviously one involving women and goddesses, or anthropology discovers that the worship of the Great Goddess temporarily elevates the position of women. Other examples of the effectivity of the “hermeneutics of surprise” are seen when applied to the role of ?akinis, Sakti worship, the Marathi Sant tradition,and to Sa?kara’s commentaries. Hinduism and Its Sense of History
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2003; 0195665317 / 9780195665314; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
It is virtually an axiom in the study of Hindu religion and culture that the Hindus lived in a mythic universe and lacked a sense of history. This book, which is in four parts, examines this proposition in detail. The book begins by considering the emergence of the axiom itself, and goes on to explore the pervasive role this axiom has played in virtually all fields of Indian studies, from historiography to literature studies. The author then catalogues and examines the various responses this alleged absence of a historcal sense on the part of the Hindus has evoked. He concludes, however, that despite its pervasiveness, the assumption cannot be sustained in the light of historical evidence, and contends that the proposition that the Hindus lacked a sense of history is misleading in the extreme and should be abandoned. Convincingly argued, eminently readable, and bearing Sharma's signature style, this compact study will attract scholars and students of Indian religions, compa rative religion, Indian history, and Indic civilization, as well as general readers interested in Hinduism. Hinduism on its Own Terms
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8124608393 / 9788124608395; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Hinduism, due to its proteanness, is more a way of life rather than a creed. The Hindu tradition recognizes the Vedas as its foundational scripture, Hinduism itself being indigenously known as Vaidika Dharma. Shruti and Smriti are the primary sources of Hinduism, where the former connotes the Vedas that stand for the revealed wisdom and the latter stands for tradition. Smriti texts include law books like the Manusmriti, epics (Itihasa) like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, Puranas, Agamas, Darshana literature (philosophical systems), sometimes Buddhist and Jaina works, other than the numerous religious works in regional languages.Hinduism was challenged by the rise of heterodox movements in the sixth century bce, especially Jainism and Buddhism. Their prolonged encounter and interaction led to the development of the philosophical schools of Hinduism. The advent of Islam and Christianity, and the origin of Sikhism, led to further developments in the Hindu thought system. This book defines and surveys Hinduism, and elaborates its keywords. It consists of two parts. The first part is a general survey of Hinduism. It describes its primary sources of information and the historical trends within its study; the Great Tradition with its basic teaching and practices; the Little Tradition; and modern developments. Many terms which appear in the first part are elaborated in the second part, along with some additional terms.This volume enables readers to grasp the fundamentals of Hinduism. Reservation and Affirmative Action: Models of Social Integration in India and the United States
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2008; 8178298589 / 9788178298580; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book examines the principles underlining the policies of reservation and affirmative action adopted by two non-homogeneous and multi-ethnic societies—India and the USA. Despite the fact that the governments of both countries have, for over fifty years now, applied these measures to overcome discrimination based on caste and race respectively, the author maintains that there is no comprehensive account of the grounds on which either reservations or affirmative action can be intellectually justified. Addressing the key question—What is being affirmed through affirmative action?—the author seeks the answer along four lines: - What is the religious component of such an affirmation, if any? - Is there a moral principle (or principles) underlying this affirmation? - Is this affirmation being advocated on the basis of ethical principles with which modern liberal thought is imbued? - Is the doctrine of human rights invoked in such an affirmation?
