Volume VI Part 3: History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization. The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes, in spite of their unitary look, recognise the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers whore are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primary historical character, this Project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by many scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. This volume offers essays by some of the most eminent art historians of India. The subjects range from Gandhara to Kerela, classical to folk arts and ancient times to the place of traditional arts in the world of today. Each essay is an authoritative work by an expert in the field. Although they cover a wide range, the contributions share an interest in the artist, and the social and philosophical context of his work. The proceedings of the seminar, distinguished by lively discussions, have been transcribed and included here. The exchanges between scholars, as recorded here, and the essays presented, contain fresh insights and much new material. There are assessments here of work done, and pointers towards the direction in which the volume of art history in India might lie. The volume with its fifteen papers and index is a source book of great value to interested scholars of fine arts and general readers alike. Kaavad Tradition of Rajasthan: A Portable Pilgrimage
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 9789383098323; Hardcover; New; New;
The kaavad of Rajasthan is a portable shrine with multiple doors that fold into themselves. The Kaavadiya Bhat or the storyteller journeys with this brightly painted wooden box to the homes of his patrons, to recite their genealogies and regale them with the stories of the pantheon of deities painted on the shrine. While the object serves as an aide- mémoire for the storyteller, the keeper of its secrets, his tales are meant to reaffirm the lineage of his patrons and their exalted place in the community. It is a tradition that binds communities in common memory and mythology. Where did it come from? What is its fate in the world today? Exploring a panel at a time of this curious mnemonic device, its author, Nina Sabnani, leads us on a journey to uncover the myths and mysteries of this unique oral-storytelling tradition.Printed Pages: 188 with 171 colour photographs. 106529

Nala and Damayanti: A Great Series of Paintings of an Old Indian Romance
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383098897; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Three things come magically together in this remarkable series of paintings - a great text, a delectable old romance and the work of one of the most talented families of painters known to Indian art. The text is the 12th century Naishadhacharita of Sriharsha, one of the last great kavyas of Sanskrit literature. The story, told with the utmost delicacy, centers around the intense love that grew mutual sights heard of, but yet unseen between King Nala and Princess Damayanti and the painter family that produced this exquisitely painted series came from the small principality of Guler in the Pahari hills - todays Himachal Pradesh. The intent of the painter/s was to cover the story in close to 110 paintings, but for reasons unknown, the work was interrupted - only 47 paintings could be completed all of them now in the collection of the Amar Mahal Museum and Library at Jammu and here published the remaining having survived only in the form of highly finished drawings. But none of this interferes in the slightest with the magic that the paintings weave. Printed Pages: 264 with 279 colour illustrations. 038117
