"The Ganga plain has been the cradle of Indian civilization right from the ancient times. This is well attested by the archaeological findings of a number of city and village sites of the Early Historical times. The region also witnessed formation of early states and urban centres. According to ancient texts, Kashi was an important janpada, with Varanasi as its capital. On account of antiquity and continuity, it is also claimed to be one of the oldest living cities of the world. The expertise in tangible skills in technologies, arts and crafts, and spiritual attainments reflected in ideologies and institutions, have placed Varanasi at the forefront of the cultural centres of the country. 110413

Foreword. Introduction. 1. Architecture of slave dynasty (1200-1290 A.D.). 2. Architecture of Khalji dynasty (1290-1320 A.D.) 3. Architecture of Tughlaq dynasty (1320-1388 A.D.) 4. Architecture of Sayyid and Lodi dynasties (1414-1526 A.D.) 5. Delhi of Mughals (1526-1707 A.D.) 6. Architecture of Babur and Humayun (1526-1556 A.D.) 7. Architecture of Sher Shah Suri (1530-1541 A.D.) 8. Shahjahanabad. Glossary. Bibliography. Index.This work on Islamic Architecture of the City of Delhi is an updated document of its own kind. Delhi is a wonderful city for being the only place which showcases nearly all the styles of Islamic architecture. It deals with the concepts and evolution, in terms of formation and its summation, of various religious and secular buildings like mosques, mausoleums, hospices, Madrasas, palaces, forts, gardens, minars etc.This book throws light not only on different styles of Islamic Architecture but also of Victorian Architecture in Delhi. Separate chapters have been devoted to define and depict Indo- Islamic architectural innovations during Sultanate period and that of Timurids or Mughals with some light on structures of Raj too. A little touch of political history while describing the essence of architectural styles, and factors responsible for blending among different styles, makes this book worth reading. Meticulously done plans, high resolution colour photographs on glossy art paper and lucidity in the narrative are some of the characteristics of this work. Much has been written on Islamic Architecture but since the invention of modern gadgets of documentation and assistance of digitized photography and colour printing the presentation in the field of art and architecture now has become more eloquent. It is a good research tool for those who have genuine interest in Islamic Architecture. In the 100th Year of foundation of the Seventh City of Delhi this book is a gift to the art lovers throughout the globe in general and dwellers of this imperial city in particular. 110653

Safeguarding Heritage: A Monumental Glory
Bharatiya Kala Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2008; 8180901971 / 9788180901973; Hardcover; New; New;
Management of heritage sites has been much talked about subject these days. Heritage sites are also seen as places of tourist interest, thus some States are focusing on “Heritage Tourism”. Management of heritage site means it should be kept and maintained in the manner it should attract visitors and they should feel safe and comfortable in visiting them. There are various aspects to this. But, the most important integral aspect is of security and safety of both, the cultural wealth as well as the tourists. Acts and Rules may be framed for the purpose and ‘Protection Notice Boards’ may be displayed, but a task force is needed to ensure their implementation. Keeping this in mind with my vast experience, I have tried to explain each and every aspect very clearly for maintaining foolproof security and safety at the heritage sites, monuments and museums; as well as the necessity and importance of security personnel. The Book is all about “Management of Heritage Sites from Security Point of View”, although references of other agencies are also mentioned which are engaged in preservation of heritage.It is now for the management and the security agencies to ensure that they implement the security procedures at the heritage sites, monuments and museums in the desired manner and not merely for namesake. Because security personnel would be first to bear the brunt due to any laxity in security norms. Heritage is to be preserved and protected for the posterity as an invaluable treasure of the nation, reflecting its glorious past. Printed Pages: 149 with 22 colour plates & 13 maps. 110688
