Forging Power: Coalition Politics in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195676769 / 9780195676761; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book looks at the evolution of coalition politics in India, both at the national and provincial levels, with the modern Indian polity having emerged as an example of the phenomenon par excellence. This has come about in spite of the commonly held views of the Indian political experience as a single dominant party system splintering into a multi-party coalition. Not only was the Congress Party a social as well as ideological coalition, even the cabinet government in the initial post-independence years was constituted on coalition principles. The book argues that the bulk of the Indian party system emerged due to a gradual erosion of this coalition. It studies the 1970s and 1980s when the Indian electorate experimented with coalition and one-party rule. The 1990s and 2000s have nurtured the coalition culture in India, with the NDA and UPA governments gaining power. The author argues that in a socio-culturally diverse country like India, coalition rule is inevitable as the melt in g pot logic has lost its viability and single-party rule is a myth. The book, while studying the phenomenon from available theoretical perspectives, explains that these are insufficient to articulate the Indian experience. Thus new theoretical models grounded on the present Indian socio-economic reality are required. Printed Pages: 304. 013588

Mahatma Gandhi: A Historical Biography
Lotus/Roli Books; New Delhi, India; 8174365060 / 9788174365064; Hardcover; New; New;
Quite distinct from the abundant literature available on Mahatma Gandhi, this historical biography attempts to articulate the historiography of India's freedom struggle, of which Gandhi was undoubtedly the central figure. Relooking at key issues and themes that have been raised in the research conducted over the past few decades, this is an interpretative essay that seeks to contextualize Gandhi and his ideology of ahimsa and satyagraha. Instead of focusing merely on Gandhi's personal life, Prof Bidyut Chakrabarty conceptualizes the evolution of his ideas in the context of anti-colonial nationalism. A nationalism of the Mahatma that for the first time in the history of the independence struggle reached every village and taluk of the state. A nationalism for a country and a society based on his principles of nai talim (new education) and sarvodaya (upliftment of all). But was it the right path and ideology for a new and emerging nation? Despite being Gandhi-centred, the biography is thus imbued with questions, which it attempts to answer. Though a unique study of one of the most prominent personalities of the twentieth century, it addresses areas of human concerns, which will always remain universal in scope and content. Modern Indian Political Thought: Text and Context
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2009; 8132102258 / 9788132102250; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Modern Indian Political Thought: Text and Context is an essential reading for students of social sciences seeking to unravel the formation and text of the thoughts of great Indian political thinkers. It is an unconventional articulation of the political thought in India that evolved during the nationalist struggle against colonialism. The salient features of the book are: - In contrast to the existing literature on the subject, it carries a context-driven conceptualisation of the major strands of political thought that emerged in India in the past two centuries. It focuses on India’s peculiar socio-political processes under colonialism that influenced the evolution of such thought. - Incorporates new ideas and issues that have been articulated, though not as extensively, in contemporary works on Indian nationalist thought and movement. - Discusses the development and articulation of political thought by leaders like Gandhi, Tagore, Ambedkar, JP, Nehru and Lohia. - Covers the Indian freedom struggle in detail. The distinguishing feature of this book is its linking of the text of Indian political thought with the context. In doing so, it challenges the ethno-centric interpretation of nationalism that, despite its roots in Western Enlightenment, evolved differently because of the context in which it was articulated.
