New Perspectives on Advaita Vedanta: Essays in Commemoration of Professor Richard De Smet, SJ
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 2000; 9004116664 / 9789004116665; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New; Brand New;
This volume is a collection of essays by leading scholars who treat various aspects of the Hindu thinker Sam?kara (ca. 700 CE) and his system of Advaita Vedanta. Topics include the contemporary relevance of Sam?kara for inter-religious dialogue and human rights as well as revised assessments of Sam?kara’s understanding of divine grace, the role of the gods, Buddhism, Sam?kara’s relation to later Advaita, and the unity of the Self. The introductory essay of this commemoration volume assesses the place and value of Richard De Smet’s work in the context of twentieth century Sam?kara scholarship. The contributors break new scholarly ground and offer fresh perspectives on Sam?kara and Advaita Vedanta and help reassess traditional understandings of this great master of non-duality. The Role of Divine Grace in the Soteriology of Samkaracarya
Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 2000; 9004120440 / 9789004120440; First Edition; Hard Cover; Brand New;
This volume examines the role of divine grace in the non-dualist soteriology of Sam?kara. The author argues that grace is an essential but generally overlooked feature in Sam?kara’s enlightenment spirituality. Introductory chapters summarize recent developments in Sam?kara research, Sam?kara’s epistemology and ontology, ancient Vedantic teachings on grace, and modern scholarly disagreement about grace in Sam?kara’s Advaita system. The heart of the book consists of two lengthy exegetical chapters examining Sam?kara’s key passages on grace from his dozen genuine works. The final chapter presents for the first time a systematic summary of Sam?kara’s understanding of the operation and necessity of divine grace. This book provides a useful summary of Sam?kara’s system as a whole besides offering a radical revision of the standard understanding of Sam?kara’s soteriology. It also reveals that Sam?kara was much more indebted in his thinking to his Vedantic predecessors than had hitherto been thought. Printed Pages: 454. 012655
