1 Johannes Bronkhorst
Buddhist Teaching in India
Wisdom Publications; Boston, USA; 2010; 0861715667 / 9780861715664; First Edition; Paperback; New;
The Abhidhamma, the third great division of early Buddhist teaching, expounds a revolutionary system of philosophical psychology rooted in the twin Buddhist insights of selflessness and dependent origination. In keeping with the liberative thrust of early Buddhism, this system organizes the entire spectrum of human consciousness around the two poles of Buddhist doctrine—bondage and liberation, Samsara and Nirvana—the starting point and the final goal. It thereby maps out, with remarkable rigour and precision, the inner landscape of the mind to be crossed through the practical work of Buddhist meditation. In this book of groundbreaking essays, Venerable Nyanaponika Thera, one of our age's foremost exponents of Theravada Buddhism, attempts to penetrate beneath the formidable face of the Abhidhamma and to make its principles intelligible to the thoughtful reader of today. His point of focus is the Consciousness Chapter of the Dhammasangani, the first treatise of the Abhidhamma Pitaka. Basing himself on the detailed list of mental factors that the Abhidhamma uses as a guide to psychological analysis, he launches into bold explorations in the multiple dimensions of conditionality, the nature of consciousness, the temporality of experience, and the psychological springs of spiritual transformation. Innovative and rich in insights, this book does not merely open up new avenues in the academic study of early Buddhism. By treating the Abhidhamma as a fountainhead of inspiration for philosophical and psychological inquiry, it demonstrates the continuing relevance of Buddhist thought to our most astute contemporary efforts to understand the elusive yet so intimate nature of the mind. Dan Goleman, celebrated author of Emotional Intelligence, in recommending this classic book, says that his former teacher, Venerable Nyanaponika Thera, was "one of the most profound and lucid interpreters of Buddhist psychology in our time." From Vasubandhu to Caitanya: Studies in Indian Philosophy and Its Textual History (Papers in the 12th World Sanskrit Conference, Volume 10.1)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2010; 8120834720 / 9788120834729; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The chapter in this volume are a selection of papers presented in the general Philosophy Section at the 12th World Sanskrit Conference in Helsinki, Finland. The first part of the book, Studies in Indian Philosophy, contains nine studies on individual topics and concepts in Indian philosophy from various perspectives: historical-philological, philosophical and comparative. They are inter alia concerned with such fundamental issues as the characteristic signs of the Self, the concept of vijnaptimatrata in Vasubandhu's Yogacara, the notion of unchanging cognition in the writings of the Kashmirian author Ramakantha, the definition of existence according to the late Buddhist philosopher Jnanasrimitra, and the significance of the sadhana catustaya in Vedanta. In the second part of the book, two papers contribute to the study of the textual history of Indian philosophy, with a focus on the Patanjalayogasastra and Candrananda's commentary on the Vaisesikasutra.Printed Pages: 182. 102081

Greater Magadha: Studies in the Cultures of Early India
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2013; 8120835344 / 9788120835344; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Greater Magadha, roughly the eastern part of the Gangetic plain of northern India, has so far been looked upon as deeply indebted to Brahmanical culture. Religions such as Buddhism and Jainism are thought of as derived, in one way or another, from Vedic religion. This belief is defective in various respects. The book argues for the importance and independence of Greater Magadha as a cultural area until a date close to the beginning of the Common Era. In order to correct the incorrect notions, two types of questions are dealt with: questions pertaining to cultural and religious dependencies, and questions relating to chronology. As a result a modified picture arises that also has a bearing on the further development of Indian culture. The book is arranged in five parts. Part-I describes cultural features of Greater Magadha, under which there are three chapters-The Fundamental Spiritual Ideology, Other Features and Conclusions. Part-II: Brahmanism vis-a-vis Rebirth and Karmic Retribution has three sections- Hesitantly Accepted, Rebirth and Karmic Retribution Ignored or Rejected, and Urban Brahmins. Under section one there are chapters onó Dharma Sutra, a portion from the Mahabharata and the early Upanisads. Section two features chapters on Rebirth and Karmic Retribution Ignored and Rebirth and Karmic Retribution Rejected. Section three is on urban Brahmins.Printed Pages: 433. 102519

The Paribhasendusekhara by Nagesa is the most widely studied text in the field of grammatical Paribhasas. Numerous commentaries have been written on it including one by Nagesa`s Pupil, Vaidyanatha Payagunda. In addition an excellent english translation was published more than a century ago by one of the most outstanding scholars of sanskrit grammar, Franz Kielhorn. Yet the protion dealing with the Bahiranga Paribhasa the most important Paribhasa and the one most extensively discussed by Nagesa has according to Bronkhorst been misunderstood by commentators and translator alike.Printed Pages: 233. 102569
