1 Saroj Kumar Chaudhuri
Sanskrit in China and Japan
Aditya Prakashan; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8177421107 / 9788177421101; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book covers the great academic exchange that took place between Indian monks and Chinese intellectuals during the first millennium of the Christian era. Information on Sanskrit linguistics transmitted by Indian monks helped Chinese intellectuals to evolve a phonetic system to read their pictographic script. The author taught Japanese language in the School of Foreign Languages, Ministry of Defense, Government of India, Department of Chinese and Japanese Studies (currently Department of East Asian Studies), and College of Business Administration, Aichi Gakusen University, Toyoto City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He was also a visiting professor at the Institute for the Study of Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa, Tokyo. His earlier books are Siddham in China and Japan, (published as the 88th issue of Sino-Platonic Studies, Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Pennsylvania, USA.), Hindu Gods and Goddesses in Japan, and Lives of Early Buddhist Monks (translation of Chinese biographies of Indian and Central Asian monks by Kumarajiva around 410, monk Seng-yu around 518, and Paramartha around 550), the last two published from Delhi. He is currently a Guest Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi. Printed Pages: 310 with 19 tables, 9 figures & 3 appendix. 100024
