Language, Reality, and Analysis: Essays on Indian Philosophy
E.J. Brill; Leiden, The Netherlands; 1990; 9004093052 / 9789004093058; First Edition; Hard Cover; Fine;
The author applies the methods of latest linguistic analysis to the Indian theories of reality and the relation between language and reality. Special attention is given to the Advaita Vedanta and the Buddhist theories. The proper methods of philosophy, according to the author, is the logical analysis of language. In these essays he shows how this method is fruitfully employed in Vedanta and Buddhist philosophies. He also shows how the key Advaita concepts of avidya and adhyasa are results of logical analysis of ordinary propositional forms of cognitions, and not metaphysical theses about a transcendent reality. Of the eight essays collected in this volume five deal with Advaita Vedanta three of which directly interpret Samkara, the two others interpret the great Advaita philosopher Vidyaranya. There is also an essay on the logical basis of the Buddhist apoha theory. The concluding essay on "Spirit, Machine and Man" argues against the two extreme conceptions of man: materialistic and idealistic, and argues for the priority of a concept of person. Lectures on Kantís Critique of Pure Reason
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8121512778 / 9788121512770; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
This book contains lectures on the Critique of Pure Reason delivered by J. N. Mohanty at Temple University, USA. These lectures are culmination of Mohantyís life-long engagement with the Philosophy of Kant. With a view to situating Kant in the proper perspective the author carefully mentions and explains some points of contact and those of contrast between Kant and some pre-Kantian philosophers on the one hand, and between Kant and many post-Kantian philosophers on the other. He has discussed views of Kant Scholars whose works are not easily available or have not been translated in English. This is a great help to the study of the Critique of Pure Reason. Important philosophical concepts and arguments contained in the First Critique have been thoroughly analysed and examined in this book. Originality of thought, clarity and lucidity of expression and simplicity of style have made this volume a significant addition to famous commentaries on the Critique. While editing the volume, the editors have retained the conversational style of the original lectures as far as practicable so that the readers of the volume may have some flavour of Mohantyís teaching. Students and teachers of philosophy as well as those who have some general interest in Kantís philosophy will certainly benefit from this book. Printed Pages: 261. 037769
