Essays on Hinduism (Third Edition)
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 9789384082017; Third Edition; Softcover; New;
In this collection of essays the author discusses the basics of Hinduism. Outlining the message of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Upanisads, he argues that Hinduism is not a cult, nor a bunch of dogmas, but a religion of the highest order that speaks of an immanent and transcendental god. It also offers a philosophy of life that cuts across ethnic and geographic barriers between men. According to him, the essentials of Hindu religio-philosophic teaching are pervaded by the ideal of universalism and love for humanity. The author drives home the relevance of Hindu universalism to an age in which nations are armed for mutual annihilation. He maintains that successful application of the religio-philosophic teachings of Hindu seers will help humankind to overcome the worst crisis facing it in this nuclear age, and will lead to restructuring the world on the all-embracing principle of freedom and equity. The text is followed by the author's lucid translation and commentary on Mundaka Upanisad. The book is the revised edition of his earlier Hinduism.Printed Pages: 178. 102058

9 Mohammad Yasin, Madh Avi Yasin & Dr Karan Singh (Frwd)
Mystries and Glimpses of Kashmir
Raj Publications; New Delhi, India; 1996; 8186208038 / 9788186208038; Softcover; New;
The Book throws light on different facets of Kashmir history. Prof. Yasin's contention that Jesus Christ's last remains lie buried in Khaniyar, Srinagar, is not to rake up any religious controversy, but his approach is purely historical. It is not a new discovery, but what has been already said by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian and others, has been analysed critically in historical apparatus without any religious bias.Similarly his surmise that Kongvatan in Kashmir is Kundalvana, the venue of the 4th Buddhist Council, was the result of physical varification of the location given by Hieun Tsang. The other papers explain 'the riddle of the cultural synthesis and essential unity and oneness of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.'Madhavi Yasin's papers are important from the point of view of sources, socio-cultural and political history. They would be useful alike to research scholars and general readers. She has focussed attention on the position and status of women, and their gradual but steady march towards emancipation. She has highlighted the fact that in the Ladakh division of Jammu and Kashmir, the women are more liberated than their counterparts.Printed Pages: 267. 106330

Nala and Damayanti: A Great Series of Paintings of an Old Indian Romance
Niyogi Books; New Delhi, India; 2015; 9789383098897; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Three things come magically together in this remarkable series of paintings - a great text, a delectable old romance and the work of one of the most talented families of painters known to Indian art. The text is the 12th century Naishadhacharita of Sriharsha, one of the last great kavyas of Sanskrit literature. The story, told with the utmost delicacy, centers around the intense love that grew mutual sights heard of, but yet unseen between King Nala and Princess Damayanti and the painter family that produced this exquisitely painted series came from the small principality of Guler in the Pahari hills - todays Himachal Pradesh. The intent of the painter/s was to cover the story in close to 110 paintings, but for reasons unknown, the work was interrupted - only 47 paintings could be completed all of them now in the collection of the Amar Mahal Museum and Library at Jammu and here published the remaining having survived only in the form of highly finished drawings. But none of this interferes in the slightest with the magic that the paintings weave. Printed Pages: 264 with 279 colour illustrations. 038117

Jammu And Kashmirhlu has basically been a Teacher of English literature but while working in the Amar Mahal Museum and Library, Jammu for the last two and half decades his mind got yoked to many Devotions of Jammu and Kashmir Art and architecture, History and culture, Mysticism and literature. And he passes from one devotion to the other with athletic ease.The present book is divided into two parts: one is concerned with Jammu and the other with Kashmir. Then each part is subdivided into various sections; first, art and architecture; second, history and third, literature.Essays on art and architecture: this section attempts at a descriptive and critical Study of ancient monuments of Jammu and Kashmir. The Author has detailed the Geographic and scenic beauty of the places with actuality and narrated the historical background in quite a succinct manner. He has examined the Religious aspect and then in the case of paintings his analytical faculty marks the critical one.Historical Essays: In this section Prof. Wakhlu writes about the historical personages with vivid dramatic effectiveness without sacrificing the historical accuracy. He has written only about the great and noble historical figures ignoring many others of less significance.Literary Essays: In the domain of literature he indeed has self-confidence and ease. Apart from English he also had the opportunity to study both the Dogri and Kashmiri literature in depth. In this section he has taken care to include only a few chosen representative poets.By a slightest reflection on this work one can feel that he possesses a firm Sense of composition, a sweep, and compact and delightful verve and eloquence.Printed Pages: 372. 105896
