Groundwater Management in India: Physical. Institutional and Policy Alternatives
Sage Publications; New Delhi, India; 2007; 0761935355 / 9780761935353; First Edition; Paperback; New;
Groundwater is becoming an increasingly popular resource because of the relative ease and flexibility with which it can be tapped. While developing groundwater resource promises to help alleviate poverty in many areas, the most formidable challenge is its sustainable use and management in regions where it is under threat. The central focus of this book is groundwater management in India: the economies that groundwater generates, the socio-economic impact of its intensive use, and the physical, institutional and policy options for its management. The book provides a fresh analysis of the socio-ecology of groundwater, based on a synthesis of macro and micro level data on the hydrological, social, economic and institutional parameters. The region of North Gujarat has been specifically studied to document the uncontrolled use of groundwater and the ill-effects of such exploitation. With alarming drops in water levels and increasing levels of fluorides and TDS in groundwater, the region’s water problems have attracted international attention because of their implications in terms of reducing the viability of irrigated agriculture as also their impact on community health. The findings are used to draw policy conclusions regarding the tools for managing groundwater in other regions with similar resource and use characteristics. The authors have used several new methodologies, analytical procedures and criteria to analyse groundwater use in agriculture, the economic value of groundwater, water intensity of milk production and the efficient use of groundwater. 12 Manohar Singh Gill (M.S. Gill)
Himalayan Wonderland: Travels in Lahaul and Spiti
Penguin; New Delhi, India; 2010; 0670084131 / 9780670084135; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
In the summer of 1962, a restless young Indian administrator, Manohar Singh Gill, made an arduous journey from the north Indian plains to the farthest reaches of the Indian Himalayas—the Lahaul and Spiti valleys—and spent a year there, living and working amongst the people. Gill went on to a distinguished career in the civil services and government, but his experience of the relentless beauty of these spectacular Himalayan deserts and the generosity of the people of this land changed him for life. Part memoir, part travel book and part anthropology, Himalayan Wonderland is a witty, opinionated account of Gill’s lifelong affair with this extraordinary region. The book, however, is much more than one man’s account of a place … it is a hopeful and enlightening view of the practice of administration and the joy of working with people. Illustrated with more than forty photographs taken by Gill himself, and including detailed contour maps and information on trekking routes in Lahaul and Spiti, this is a remarkably illuminating and accessible account of this faraway land—from the 1960s, when few knew about the place, to today’s unpredictable world of receding glaciers and lost cultures. Historical Gurdwaras of Delhi by M.K. Political Economy of Federalism in India
Oxford University Press; New Delhi, India; 2005; 0195670175 / 9780195670172; First Edition; Hard Cover; New; New;
The failure of the centralized state, both in economic and political governance, has swung the pendulum in favour of decentralized systems across the globe in recent years. Making a sucessful transition to decentralized governance, however, is a formidable challenge. Indian federalism is at a crossroad. On one hand, the legacy of colonialsim, partition, and the vision of nation-building have contrived to create a centralized federation. On the other, the ongoing transition to a free market has brought contradictions of centralized federal arrangements to the fore. The book deals with the sytems, institutions, and outcomes from the interplay of political and economic forces in Indian federalism. It attempts to broaden the conceptual framework for analysing Indian federalism by exploring political elements and institutions and their strategic interaction with fiscal variables. It further emphasizes the emergence of coalition governments at the Centre, and the increasing importan ce of regional parties which have brought out the contradictions in the efficient governance of the federation. This synthesized framework, incorporating economic perspectives on political institutions, more comprehensively than ever attempted before, will be immensely valuable for policymakers, foreign lending agencies, technocrats, journalists, and NGOs. Students of Indian political economy as well as general readers will also find it useful.. Printed Pages: 432. 013755
