Essays in Buddhist Theology
Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8120835409 / 9788120835405; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Buddhism does not recognize a concept of the existence of God (theos) such as found in Christianity, but here theos is not used to refer only to an absolute deity like the Christian god. By "theology," the author means the systematic delineation of the confrontation with the condition of the times while carrying on the engagement between the divine and oneself. Buddhism has spread widely down to the present and it manifests great diversity, in such forms as the neo-Buddhism of India, the Newar Buddhism of the Kathmandu basin, the Theravada Buddhism of Southeast Asia, Japanese Buddhism, and so on. But although Buddhism has taken various forms in different historical and cultural contexts, this does not necessarily mean that the construction of a "Buddhist theology" is insurmountably difficult. "Buddhist theological research" is a matter of researchers confronting contemporary conditions while based in Buddhist traditions belonging to diverse social and cultural conditions. In this way a theology addressing the historical and cultural context will be born.Printed Pages: 182. 102356

The discovery of fire is a very important event in the human civilisation. In ancient times, however, it was difficult to create fire. This gave rise to the idea of maintaing the fire all the time and also to fire-worship. Thus, the fire-worship is very common in most of the I religions in the world.In Ancient India also, the ancestral fire or the marriage-fire was always kept alive in the house. For that purpose it was ritually given the morning and evening offerings. This was the part of the grhya, 'domestic' ritual and the fire also was called grhya.Then modelled on the elaborate Darsapurnamasesti, 'the fort-nightly offerings' in the Srauta fire, the rite of Sthalipaka, 'the fort-nightly offerings' in the grhya 'domestic' fire was designed I and observed.This Book is an attempt to I document the ritual performance of Sthalipaka with the photographs of the actual performance which took place I in Pune. It has one hundred and ten I photographs showing the important I gradual ritual steps in together with the detailed explanation of the rites being performed.
