Arthashastra of Kautilya (Second Edition), 3 Vols
New Bharatiya Book Corporation; New Delhi, India; 8183150349 / 9788183150347; Second Edition; Softcover; New;
Kautilya's Arthasastra, the ancient Indian classic of governance, has been gaining increasing attention of Indologists all over the world, in recent years. It gives a mine of information regarding the actual practice of governance and outlines a picture of an ideal system of efficient administration. In the first chapter, Mr. Mannadiar introduces the treatise, indicates the themes of its fifteen adhikaranas and gives a profile of Kautilya about whom we have only scanty reliable information. He follows it up with a brief description of the society in which Kautilya lived. The rich material of the Book has been judiciously reorganised to present various topics in a compact form. The topics dealt with include the administrative hierarchy, conditions of service, penal practices, welfare measures and foreign policy. Kautilya gives detailed instructions regarding the organisation of an efficient network of spies. Even the most infamous Intelligence Agencies of the present world may find some useful hints to strengthen their department of dirty tricks. "Trust none" should be the motto of the ruler. Modern Management gurus find in Arthasastra many ideas which could be implemented in their organisations. Mr. Mannadiar devotes one full chapter to the theme. He has not failed to note the absence of concern with general education and public health. Kautilya's interest in environmentalism and social forestry should be an eye-opener to many contemporary ecologists. Mannadiar's occasional asides and comments connect the wily Brahmin's Insight to the present practice of public administration. 101251

Kautilya Arthashastra: A Study
Bharatiya Vidya Prakashan; Delhi, India; 2013; Hardcover; New; New;
Sharma Shastri discovered for the first time the most important political treatise of Kautalya called the Arthashastra and published it from Mysore in 1909 and later an English translation in 1915. Later R. P. Kangle brought out a fairly accurate translation based on fresh materials. T. Ganapati Sastri edited the text in the Trivandrum Sanskrit Series, between 1924-25 with his own complete Sanskrit Commentary styled 'Srimulam' (in three volumes) using all the fragments of ancient Sanskrit commentaries as well as an old Malayalam commentary (though incomplete) of the 12th centurt A.D. F. Edgerton pronounced that "Ganapati Sastri's edition with his own commentary is decideedly the best edition of that all important work". M. Wnternitz observed that Ganapati sastri's :Sreemulam is an indispensable help for every student of Arthashastra". Dr. N. P. Unni who brought out a reprint with an elaborate introduction (in three volumes) in 1984 has now prepared this authentic English translation of the text. 103732

Mattavilasa Prahasana (Text, English Translation With Introduction)
Nag Publishers; Delhi, India; 1998; 8170814014 / 9788170814016; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
The earliest farcical sketch in one Act, the Mattavilasa or 'Diversion of the Drunk' of King Mahendrvikramavarman of Kanchi, depicts the drunken revelry of a Saiva mendicant bearing A Human skull in lieu of an alms-bowl and accordingly calling himself a Kapalin; his wanderings with his wench through the purlieus of Kanchi on his way to a tavern; his scuffle with a hypocritical Buddhist monk whom he accuses of the theft of the precious bowl; his appeal to degenerate Pasupata to settle the dispute and the final recovery of the bowl from a lunatic who has retrieved it from a stray dog. The Prahasana is a remarkably smart production of the genre, replete with mirth and satire and the characters are vigorously drawn throwing a flood of light on the life of the time. The royal author who calls himself 'Vicitracitta' holds to ridicule the sham priests and mendicants of various religious sects. The work is here critically edited with an English translation and detailed introduction giving an account how the farce is staged in the reformed temple theatres of Kerala by Cakyars" during the last several centuries. A rare and hitherto unknown metrical commentary is also appended to the edition.Printed Pages: 120. 103907
