Mahisasatakam of Vanchanatha (also known as Vanchesvara, and a descendent of Govinda Diksita) is a century of verses written in eighteenth century. Vanchanatha's father served as minister in Tanjore court. The Tanjore Bhonsle dynasty starts with Vyankoji (half brother of great Shivaji Bhonsle) who founded the kingdom. Shahji, his successor, ruled from 1684 to 1712 AD. Vanchanatha's father was a minister during Shahji's reign. Vanchanatha was born in Shahjipuram Agrahara on the banks of Kaveri river. Mahisasatakam is poem of protest and provides rare experience of rural India. It has been translated in English and Hindi for the first time. This translation would hopefully revive the interest of researchers and students of Indology in diverse traditions of Sanskrit literature This new edition Mahisasatakam has been prepared by Radhavallabh Tripathi after cone; ting readings from two available editions.Printed Pages: 127. 104062

Natyasastra in the Modern World: Proceedings of the 15th World Sanskrit Conference (Volume III: Special Panel on Natyasastra)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2014; 8124607222 / 9788124607220; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Natyashastra of Bharatamuni, considered as the fifth Veda, has remained a Samhita with a systematic presentation of conceptual frameworks, theories and practices of Indian theatre for a few millennium years. Every performing art of India (dance–drama) has drawn both theoretical and aesthetics values from Bharata and his Natyashastra, giving continuity to a legacy, as it was written to set models and standards for actors, artisans, and the playwrights. Natyashastra’s discovery in the nineteenth century was a milestone in the world history of aesthetics and theatre. The subsequent researches made Bharata and his theatre a vibrant topic of global dialogue and researches. This has resulted in the discovery of different versions of the Natyashastra. This volume discusses in detail the divergent views on Natyashastra — its origin, concepts, philosophy, history, vritti, impact on traditional stages, relevance in modern age and stage, and its applicability in post-modern stage. It also vividly talks about the interlinks between Natyashastra and the regional theatre forms with specific focus on south India. It therefore reinstates the fact that the regional theatric traditions have considerably contributed to the restructuring of Natyashastra texts. With deliberations on varied topics, this book proudly announces that Natyashastra is not just a text, but a tradition of theatre that has remained vibrant till today, reminiscent of Indian world-view. And this makes this volume a must-study for "who is who" in the theatric domain.Printed Pages: 167. 100475

Sixty Years of Sanskrit Studies (Volume 2: Countries Other Than India)
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2012; 8124606307 / 9788124606308; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
With the popularity of Orientalism in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, knowledge of Sanskrit in the Western world led to the emergence of new schools and disciplines for study like, comparative mythology, comparative religion and comparative linguistics, etc. The articles presented in this volume examine the state of Sanskrit studies in universities in different countries of the world (volume 1 presents a survey of Sanskrit studies in universities and institutes in the states/union territories of India). Covering some 13 countries, the articles herein discuss how some departments, related to the study of religions, in countries like the US have incorporated Sanskrit even as some other universities as those in the UK, US and other parts of the world, have Sanskrit as one of the subjects under other departments. They emphasise the fact that it is not possible to view Sanskrit as an autonomous discipline, providing authenticity to various other branches of learning, but that it has to be considered as a part of the larger framework of the global studies. They point to the emergence of new schools and centres for studies of Sanskrit in various countries. At the same time, they also examine the alarming situation arising because of the erosion or marginalisation of Sanskrit across the world, especially as some Sanskrit departments in reputed universities or institutions of higher learning, are being closed one after the other. They urge for understanding the future of Sanskrit studies in the larger context of human culture while underlining the importance of Sanskrit as a cementing force in bringing together diverse civilisations and cultures.Printed Pages: 319. 100490

Vada in Theory and Practice: Studies in Debates, Dialogues and Discussions in Indian Intellectual Discourses
D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 2016; 8124608563 / 9788124608562; First Edition; Hardcover; New; New;
Vada, meaning debates, dialogues, discussions, was the quintessential of Indian spirit, enabling and promoting the growth of different philosophical and knowledge systems of India. It percolated deep into our mindset and enriched the moral, ethical, religious and socio-cultural edifice of anything that was essentially Indian in nature. As continuation of Anvikshiki from the BC era, vada helped thrive Indian traditional knowledge systems. It subsists on diversity and its tradition envisages pluralism.Most of our Sanskrit works, covering a wide gamut of knowledge systems, are structured in the techniques of debate. This reality applies not only to the philosophical writings, but to Indian medical systems (Ayurveda), Arthashastra of Kautilya and Kamasutra of Vatsyayana as well. Even great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata are no exceptions.Vada culture involved verbal duals, attacks and even violence of speech, and all major religious systems - old or modern - were parties to it. This book also elucidates how vata was vital and critical for the growth of our socio-political fabrics. It shows how some of the major conflicts in philosophical systems were centred around karma, jnana, choice between violence and non-violence, pravritti and nivritti. It also presents the manifestations of vada on a vast canvas during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Modern spiritual and religious gurus like Ramana Maharshi, J. Krishnamurti and Vinoba Bhave were men of dialogues. Our scholars have applied the varied techniques of vada against the philosophical and scientific systems of the West to prove them correct.This collector’s issue should enthrall a wide audience of philosophers, scholars and believers in Indian knowledge systems.
