Techno Feminism
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8175333448 / 9788175333444; Softcover; New;
Women's position in information technology (IT) employment in the wider context of feminist debates on gender and technology and indeed, interest in gender, science and technology developed largely in response to the long-standing marginalisation of women from technically-oriented work and professions, such as engineering. Technology was seen as a defining feature of masculinity, producing and perpetuating occupational segregation by sex in the workplace. Since then, groundbreaking developments in digitalisation and biotechnologies have led many contemporary feminists to surmise that the traditional link between technology and male privilege is finally being severed. Since the ground breaking developments in digitalisation and biotechnologies - that have led many contemporary feminists to surmise that the link between technology and male privilege is finally being severed. Yet, there is a suspicion that some existing societal patterns of inequality are being reproduced in a new technological guise. After all, our view of the woman-machine relationship has long oscillated between pessimistic fatalism and utopian optimism, technophobia and technomania. Printed Pages: 267. 117660

The Architectural Heritage of Himachal Pradesh: Origin and Development of Temple Styles
Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.; New Delhi, India; 1996; 812150712X / 9788121507127; First Edition; Cloth; New; New;
The book provides a comprehensive, chronological, scientific and comparative analysis of extant temple styles of Himachal Pradesh from the sixth to the fourteenth century AD. It is primarily based on enormous architectural data collected through field surveys of temple sites in loco. Each temple has been examined in its socio-economic and cultural contexts. The temple exercised considerable influence on the devout and the laity, and dominated various facets of western Himalayan society and economy through its complex cultural network, by bringing under its clasp both royalty and the common people. The names of several artists and craftsmen who embellished exquisite specimens of art, lie enmeshed in a corpus of obscure epigraphs. By collecting and piecing them together, the book refutes the generally held view that Indian art is anonymous. The author has also tested the validity of textual prescriptions given in the Indian vastusastras and actual construction methods practised by the sutradharas in Himachal for the nagara temples through accurate measurements taken to the extent of a millimetre. The study reveals that the architects achieved mathematical homogeneity and a sense of scale and symmetry in their elaborate plan and elevation proportions. At the same time the temple forms were largely determined by assorted geographic and climatic factors. The text is richly illustrated and should be of interest to both specialists and general readers. Printed Pages: 204 with 48 line drawings and 88 b/w illustrations. 001733

Women in Science, Engineering and Technology
MD Publications/Prints Publications; New Delhi, India; 2011; 8175333561 / 9788175333567; Softcover; New;
Women have contributed to science from its earliest days; however, in large part they have received little or no approbation for their contributions during their lifetimes. Historians with an interest in gender and science have illuminated the contributions women have made, the barriers they have faced, and the strategies implemented to have their work accepted. In the last 30 years, great progress has been made in analyzing and responding to these concerns. Despite the roadblocks, women have made headway, if unevenly, as they enter the fields of science and technology. Greater opportunity in these fields has allowed more women to share good wages, interesting work, high social status associated with these occupations. Advacing scientific careers for women has led to other benefits for science , has most obvious being and enlarged pool of smart, well-trained, and highly motivated individuals from which to staff its projects. Whatever the social, political, or psychological benefits that men may have gained by discriminating against women in the past, the intellectual loss has never been justified invoking gender criteria when recruiting and advancing the best scientists and engineers' works against their interests.
