This valuable socio-legal study is a detailed analysis of the customary laws practised in the Lakshadweep islands. The customary law of Lakshadweep is notable for the fact that a primarily Muslim community follows Hindu matrilineal customary law in the field of inheritance. This is the first study of its kind on social organization and practice of customary law in Lakshadweep . Other Muslim communities which have similar traditions include the Khojas and Memons of Mumbai and the Meos. The book is rich in empirical evidence as well as in its description of the island s unique religious-cultural frame work. The analysis highlights the fact that its customary law is very different from the mainland s legal system and practice. It goes on to analyse how developments in the mainland have influenced the thinking of the people as well as the judiciary leading to major socio-legal changes which may prove to be detrimental to the interests of women. The narrative includes a critical appra isal of important judgements of the Supreme Court. Printed Pages: 320.
