This book is a collection of Sudhir Kakar's essays on cultural psychology, a discipline, which studies the interplay of culture and individual psyches. Professor Kakar draws upon his rich experience as a practising psychoanalyst and attempts a study of Indian identity through sources as diverse as case studies, Indian myths and legends, and popular cinema. While most of these essays have earlier been published in leasing international journals, the book also contains two that have been written specifically for this volume. With these essays the author continues his project, begun with the publication of the Inner World (OUP, 1978), of exploring and understanding the Indian psyche through a cultural and psychoanalytic investigation if ideas concerning identity and sexuality.
