The death of Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy fifty years ago marks a sort of watershed in the history of twentieth century aesthetics. His vast achievement as historian of Asiatic art, interpreter of Indian aesthetic thought and commentator of its major texts was of pioneering importance and, fundamental not so much in those sectors as such where there was certainly no dearth in his time of equally distinguished scholars and specialists, but insofar as it pushed back the boundaries of the aesthetic ecumene, laying bridges and opening up roads where deeply entrenched barriers and fences had hitherto prevented access. This is the second title of the series "II Loto e la Rosa" (The Lotus and the Rose), devised to foster the understanding of Asiatic philosophies and the appreciation of their spiritual insights in the Italian intellectual community. Difficulties of various kinds have delayed the publication of this book independently of the good will of contributors and of the present editor. Now East and West in Aesthetics sees the light in an auspicious coincidence with the Pacific Rim Conference in Transcultural Aesthetics at the University of Sydney (June 1997), and the 35th International Congress of Asian and North-African Studies, Budapest (July 1997).Printed Pages: 200.
