'Love and Beauty in Shakespeare' symbolises fulfilment of a long-cherished desire of mine which could not materialise earlier mainly for a two-fold reason: Carrying a mingled 'culture' of both Eastern and Western Poetics in many mental make-up, I have often been persuaded to record my own perceptions, at times running contrary to those of western scholars or even to those imbibed by fellow Indian teachers of English Letters in the universities. In matters of criticism, let me confess clearly, I have always relied upon my own understanding which I have regarded as 'Intellectual Honesty' in the literary domain. As to the method of treatment, 1 have deliberately avoided narrating the story as a prelude, but have proceeded on the assumption that the plots of the plays are well-known to the learned community of readers. Shakespeare's sources have often been mentioned. As for the texts of the Poems and plays of Shakespeare, the editions of verity and other popular editors both English and Indian, available in Indian markets, have been depended upon.I am elated with sincere joy that my two long-dreamt-of works, to wit, 'A Critical History of the English Muse’, and 'Love and Beauty in Shakespeare', are both appearing before the world of scholars almost simultaneously after a long period of gathering dust where I need to say.I shall feel my labours amply rewarded, should the scholars go through the present work in a spirit of sympathy, untinctured by prejudices, and also appraise me of the shortcomings discovered by them.
