P.R. Ramachandra Rao's "Modern Indian Painting" is derived from his exposition of the subject at Oxford University in 1949; first published in 1953, it remains a classic, treasured by connoisseurs of Indian Art the world over. It was originally planned for publication by Sir Geoffrey Faber, the head of the renowned firm Faber and Faber, and the celebrated Director of its Board, the Nobel Laureate, T.S. Eliot, in a spontaneous gesture after they attended Ramachandra Rao's discourse. However, as the book would have been inordinately delayed by the unavoidable constraints of their publishing schedule, the publishing was taken over by Rachana, the Madras-based enterprise, and its two editions, one on cream-wove paper and another, a special imprint on Indian hand-made parchment, soon sold out. This is the first reprinting of this seminal work.
