This study explores the highly sensitive demographical problem of fertility behaviour through intensive fieldwork method of social anthropology. It presents a holistic perspective on fertility behaviour through a study of a village in Rajasthan. The second edition discusses the methodological and theoretical issues relevant in fertility studies and further enriches our understanding of the meaning and relational contexts of reproductive actors. The author has successfully combined the disciplines of demography and social anthropology. In addition to applying the method of participant observation, she has used village census, retrospective fertility histories of women, genealogies, and case studies of men and women to interpret fertility trends. According to her, objective conditions of life which include changes in the larger social order are linked in an important way to the subjective orientations of a people. This in turn influences norms regarding fertility behaviour. The importance of intensive studies of small communities, which are able to identify specific problems, are therefore self-evident. The work also looks at the 'fertility career' of a couple in relation to the different stages of development of the household.
