Coal as a prime source of energy and by-product raw material, will continue to vital play a role in the economy of the country. Exploration Geophysics has been g an increasingly important role in the last three decades, in extending our resource base of coal and lignite, in locating new prospective areas and also in environmental and mining problems. This Memoir is authored by the duo of an experienced geophysicist and academician, is intended to serve as a text at the post-graduate level in our Geoscience Departments and as a reference manual to professionals active in the field. Contents Foreword/B.P. Radhakrishna. Preface/P.R. Pant and B.V.S. Murty. 1. Introduction. 2. Geological aspects of coal. 3. Exploration for coal conventional approaches. 4. Geophysical methods for coal. 5. Geophysical exploration for coal indirect approach. 6. Geophysical search for coal in some Indian Gondwana Basins. 7. Geophysical exploration for coal direct approach (surface). 8. Geophysical exploration for coal direct approach (subsurface). 9. Conceptual geophysical exploration strategy for Lower Gondwana Coal. 10. Geophysical exploration for Lignite in India. 11. Geophysical techniques for resolving coal mining problems. 12. Epilogue. References. From the Foreword Physical properties of density magnetic susceptibility electrical resistivity and acoustic wave velocity of coal bearing sediments are lower than those of the compact basement rocks thus providing a firm basis for geophysical exploration to be widely employed. All the major geophysical methods in use employed in coal exploration viz. gravity magnetic electrical and seismic methods are covered in the present work. Geophysical methods have proved indispensable in covered areas and in areas of scanty exposures in locating promising subsurface coal horizons in addition to providing valuable inputs to refine subsurface structural interpretations. In addition geophysical well logging is employed extensively in all stages of exploration. A conceptual geophysical exploration strategy has also been attempted in this book distilling the knowledge gained from three decades of exploration. Geophysics in the exploration for lignite application of geophysics in tackling problems of mining as well as environmental issues too have been considered. Thus the role of geophysics in all stages of coal exploration are comprehensively presented in this monograph. Memoir Series: 59. Printed Pages: 310.
