Commodore Sujeet Samaddar, NM retired from the Indian Navy as the Principal Director Naval Plans and is a well known defence strategist and writer specialising in Japan-India relations, maritime strategy and technology, defence acquisitions and defence economics. Born on April 8, 1958, Samaddar graduated in Industrial Engineering from IIT Roorkee in 1978. Samaddar has a First Class MSc and MPhil degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Madras as well as a PGDIM from IGNOU. He has been a Visiting International Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs, Tokyo and the Admiral RD Katari Fellow at the United Services Institution of India, New Delhi. He is an alumnus of the prestigious United Nations University, Tokyo and remains the only Indian to have won the ¥500,000 UNU-Eisaku Sato International Research Paper Award for his paper “Global Security through Universal Education”. Samaddar is also an alumnus of the College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and the National Institute for Defence Studies, Tokyo. He has several publications in India, Japan, UK and USA including a book “Defence Development and National Security” and has delivered talks in various think tanks in India, UK and Japan.
