The present volume focusses on the roots of human behaviour and tries to explain why diverse individuals behave differently under the same circumstances. The structure and function of the brain—insofar as they determine behaviour—are described in some detail. Our genetic make—up, the environment in which we are brought up, intelligence, perception, memory, learning, imagination and our various innate drives shape the manner in which we act and react. Creativity is natural to us but can be thwarted or fostered by those around us and by circumstances. The book also describes abnormalities of behaviour often the result (often the result of mental illness) and contemporary problems such as addiction to drugs, the development of violent traits and criminal behaviour.
