In this book, the author brings to the fore the seamier side of our establishment and public life. He also exposes the dark underbelly of the media. He gives an account of all the ills that are plaguing our system, politics, criminal justice system, its instruments, the enforcement agencies; of manipulation, corruption, lack of integrity and distortions. He also speaks of institutional deficiencies and lack of will to change and reform these. The institution of Lokpal, for instance, remains a far off destination. Divided into six comprehensive parts, a central theme runs through all the chapters. The book, however, is by no means an account of despondency; the good and positive sides are not left out, rather they are highlighted. Icons of socialism, honest and committed public figures including JP, are discussed. The last two chapters, €˜The Moral Support €™ and €˜Reward for Honesty €™, with excerpts of letters received by the author on two crucial occasions, have a message for everyone from the youth to the bureaucrats, politicians and the public that, in the final reckoning, it pays to be honest and one can always hope to get support if he is morally upright and principled. ABOUT THE AUTHOR A former IPS officer, N. K. Singh had a long tenure in the CBI. His entire police career was very traumatic but he stood his ground firm on principles and he was awarded with Police medal for Meritorious Service and resident's Police Medal for Distinguished Service. After retirement, in 1997, he was awarded with Manav Seva Puraskar by Rotary International for his €˜ceaseless crusade against corruption at high places €™, both during and after his service. He entered politics and joined the Samata Party in 1996. Like in his career in the police, his life in politics has also been full of turmoil and vicissitudes. Here too he has stood unshaken and refused to make compromises, upholding high standards in public life. He has thrice contested Lok Sabha elections from his home constituency Madhepura, Bihar in1998, 2004 and 2009. Though he lost on all the three occasions, he has been widely admired for his bold and principled stand to fight elections from his home constituency, against all odds. Unlike most people today, he refused to change his party. Presently, he is President of the Samata Party.
